Artificial general intelligence — an A.I. system that can beat humans at almost any cognitive task — is arriving in just a couple of years. That's what people tell me — people who work in A.I. labs, researchers who follow their work, former White House officials. A lot of these people have been calling me over the last couple of months trying to convey the urgency. This is coming during President Trump's term, they tell me. We're not ready. One of the people who reached out to me was Ben Buchanan, the top adviser on A.I. in the Biden White House. And I thought it would be interesting to have him on the show for a couple reasons: He's not connected to an A.I. lab, and he was at the nerve center of policymaking on A.I. for years. So what does he see coming? What keeps him up at night? And what does he think the Trump administration needs to do to get ready for the AGI — or something like AGI — he believes is right on the horizon? This episode contains strong language.Mentioned:“Machines of Loving Grace” by Dario Amodei“Ninety-five theses on AI” by Samuel Hammond“What It Means to be Kind in a Cruel World” by The Ezra Klein Show with George SaundersBook recommendations:The Structure of Scientific Revolutions by Thomas KuhnRise of the Machines by Thomas RidA Swim in a Pond in the Rain by George SaundersThoughts? In this solo Q&A episode of the Hardcore Self Help Podcast, I answer two deeply personal and important listener questions. The first comes from a trans man struggling with the impact of anti-LGBTQ+ legislation, fear for his safety, and overwhelming feelings of hopelessness. We talk about tangible ways to navigate the stress of doomscrolling, finding community, and taking back control in uncertain times. The second question dives into the pain of heartbreak—specifically, the loss of a best friend after unrequited love. I discuss how to process grief, handle regret, and move forward when a relationship changes in ways you didn't expect. Whether you're facing fear, loss, or uncertainty, this episode offers support, validation, and practical steps to help you through it. [EP 25-009] Sanity in a cruel world 1 Sanity has been restored to the world with the election of Trump, but do we have work to do or what? Every day with Leftists means you know you will be outraged. I truly don't know where to start with my outrage this morning. My first thought as I perused the news today is why are there so many pedophiles in the world today? And why do Leftists seem to condone rape at a level that is almost unbelievable. Especially in England. These Muslim grooming gangs should have anybody with a daughter scared to death. Hell, even boys aren't safe. Some of these stories are outrageous, like fathers trying to rescue their daughters from Muslim rape gangs getting arrested, and the police doing nothing to the men! The world is an ugly place and it will require men of honor and character to restore. Yes MEN. Sorry ladies, but this is not a job for you. Nor the metrosexual Leftist men who are all TRANS as far as I'm concerned. https://x.com/CilComLFC/status/1876023328366051353 Despite representing less than 7% of the British population, Muslims represent 67% of terror attacks, 30% of birth defects due to cousin marriages, 84% of child gang-rapes and 18% of prison population, while 44% of Muslims are unemployed and 27% are in social housing. Stereo MC's are coming back to the states this month for the first time in 24 years. It's a short trip - three shows on the east coast in three nights - but it's a start. Frontman Rob Birch joins us this week to discuss the band's history. They broke big with "Connected" off their third album (that song still sounds just as fresh and groovy today), but they took 9 years to issue a follow up and momentum stalled. They may not be prolific, but the quality has always been there. We also get into the influence of rap and hip-hop on their sound, coming back to the US in May to play Cruel World, touring with Jane's Addiction and Happy Mondays, and much more. These guys have never lost their golden touch. Enjoy! www.stereomcs.com www.patreon.com/c/thehustlepod

Today on Karl and Crew Mornings, we kicked off a new week by discussing the kindness of God. Our Scripture reference this morning was 1 Corinthians 15:30-34. The resurrection of Christ was the ultimate display of the kindness of God, and it is ultimately what gives our lives meaning. Our guest this morning was Pastor and Author Nate Pickowicz. His latest book, The Kindness of God: Beholding His Goodness in a Cruel World, brings us on a joy-filled journey of discovering God's life-giving lovingkindness and compassion. Kindness has fallen on hard times. And it begins to wear on a soul. Nate Pickowicz, Pastor and author of The Kindness of God: Beholding His Goodness in a Cruel World, says “When we lift our eyes to heaven and consider God’s purposes through the lens of Scripture, we quickly see the many-splendored ways that God demonstrates His kindness to us.” Also in the podcast, Perry is working through some scary news that just hit him this week. He’s not sure where it’s going to land. So he’s trying to be intentional about rooting himself in God’s promises. If you woke up tomorrow and your life was perfect what would be different? How you answer that question might reveal an idol in your life. Then, when Shawna vulnerably shared with a friend that she was feeling overwhelmed, her friend’s response made her feel even more alone. She took it to the Lord in prayer and he responded with the most beautiful truth and it was exactly what her heart needed. Perry shares, “There are times when painful emotions threaten to sweep me away. And what I’ve learned to do when that happens is not to stuff them andnot to trust them.” Then, when Shawna vulnerably shared with a friend that she was feeling overwhelmed, her friend’s response made her feel even more alone. Vor ziemlich genau 3 Jahrzehnten hieß uns Ben Harper in seiner Welt willkommen. Sein Debut „Welcome to the Cruel World“ erschien am 8. Februar 1994 und führte uns nochmal vor Augen und Ohren, was wir eh schon wussten: Die Welt ist ein grausamer Ort. Die folgenden Albumtitel – ähnlich niederschmetternd: „Fight for Your Mind“ und „The Will to Death“.

On a recent episode of the podcast "Hidden Killers," host Tony Brueski delved into a conversation with retired FBI Special Agent and Chief of the Counterintelligence Behavioral Analysis Program, Robin Dreeke, regarding the tragic case of Dylan Mortensen and her involvement as a key witness. Dylan Mortensen, a surviving roommate of a heinous crime that transpired in her own residence, has been at the center of public judgment and critique over the past year. While the tragic events have traumatized her, the aftermath of online trolling, criticism, and bullying seems equally harrowing. The crucial question posed was about her role as a witness, specifically regarding the upcoming trial against Bryan Kohberger, the prime suspect in the case. Dreeke underscored her role stating, "She can play a hugely critical role." However, what is disheartening is the trauma Dylan faces in light of public opinion. As Dreeke empathically points out, the trauma of witnessing a murder is profound, something that has an enduring impact on the psyche. Comparing it to the pain of loss through natural causes or even accidents, he elaborates, "Murder is really the most profound way to lose someone." Brueski also touched on a disturbing trend - the inclination for people online to attack victims or those tangentially associated with tragic events. Drawing parallels with conspiracy theorists like Alex Jones targeting the Sandy Hook families, the discussion delved into the psychology behind such behaviors. Dreeke's insights were poignant: those who verbally assault and judge others, especially victims of tragedies, are often acting out their own pain and trauma. The need to "be seen" drives these individuals, amplified by the platforms that social media offers. He said, "When someone's coming at you like that, it's not about you… They're literally just trying to be seen because of their own pain and trauma." He also attributes this behavior to an increasing inability of individuals to cope with personal challenges, leading them to lash out at others as a coping mechanism. The conversation then shifted to the impending trial and the challenges faced by key witnesses like Dylan. Time, memory degradation, and emotional trauma play significant roles in how witnesses are perceived in court, and how defense attorneys might approach their testimonies. While time can indeed erode certain memories, Dreeke confidently affirmed, "When you experience something so traumatic...your memory of it is extremely vivid." Looking ahead at the trial, both Brueski and Dreeke pondered on the strategy that the defense might adopt. Given that Dylan's account of the incident was recorded shortly after it transpired, Dreeke believes it holds significant weight. However, he speculates that the defense might focus on attacking the scientific evidence rather than the emotional testimonies to maintain an emotionally neutral angle. "How will the memories of that traumatic night and the subsequent scrutiny from society shape Dylan Mortensen's testimony, and will the defense's strategies succeed in casting doubt on the credibility of key witnesses like her?" Brits seem to be more mean-spirited than ever. This is clear on social media, but also in attitudes towards poorer sections of society. How did we become so mean, and what can we do about it? Hannah Fearn is joined by professor of human geography Danny Dorling, author of new book Shattered Nation: Inequality and the Geography of A Failing State, to find out how social issues change attitudes towards those who need the most help in society – and how we can fight to be kinder. “The UK is one of the most unequal countries in Europe.” “People spend money on private schools because they are scared.” “Those who are really comfortable don't think people should be helped out.” Book Link: https://www.versobooks.com/en-gb/products/3118-shattered-nation www.patreon.com/bunkercast Written and presented by Hannah Fearn. The results of Tuesday's midterm elections are still trickling in, but the broader story is clear: The red wave that many anticipated never materialized. Republicans gained 54 House seats against Bill Clinton in 1994 and 63 seats against Barack Obama in 2010. It doesn't look as though the G.O.P. will secure anything close to that in 2022, and Democrats could retain their narrow control of the Senate — all against the backdrop of raging inflation and low approval ratings for President Biden. Why didn't Democrats get wiped out? Why did so many Republicans underperform while others, like Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida, won decisively? And what does it all imply for 2024?To talk through the midterm results and their implications, I am joined by my column's editor, Aaron Retica. We discuss why this election ended up being so shockingly close; how Democrats' performance could, paradoxically, make it harder for Biden to win in 2024; why the significance of DeSantis's victory is probably being overhyped; why inflation didn't seem to matter nearly as much to the elections' outcomes as most analysts believed it would; how a possible DeSantis-Donald Trump fight in the 2024 Republican primaries could create electoral space for more traditional Republicans to break through; John Fetterman's distinct working-class appeal in Pennsylvania, the moral calculus of Democrats' decision to bolster extreme Republican candidates in the primaries; the uncertain future of American democracy and more.(Note: This episode was recorded on the afternoon of Wednesday, Nov. 9.)Mentioned:The Bitter End by John Sides, Chris Tausanovitch and Lynn Vavreck“Hillary Clinton Accepted Her Loss, but a Lot Has Changed Since 2016” by Lynn Vavreck“Republicans Have Made It Very Clear What They Want to Do if They Win Congress” by Ezra Klein"What It Means to Be Kind in a Cruel World" by The Ezra Klein ShowPodcast Recommendations:The Prince: Searching for Xi Jinping (The Economist)Odd Lots (Bloomberg)Volts (David Roberts)EKS Episode Recommendations:“These Political Scientists Surveyed 500,000 Voters. George Saunders is regarded as one of our greatest living fiction writers. He won the Booker Prize in 2017 for his novel “Lincoln in the Bardo” and has published numerous short-story collections to wide acclaim, including his most recent book, “Liberation Day.” He also happens to be one of my favorite people to read and to talk to.Saunders is an incredibly prescient and sharp observer of American political culture. Way back in 2007, he argued that our media environment was transforming politics into a competition within which the loudest voices would command the most attention and set the agenda for everyone else. With the rise of social media — and the advent of the Trump era — that observation has been more than vindicated. So as we approach the midterm elections, I wanted to have Saunders back on the show to talk about how politics and media have changed, and how those changes are shaping the way we interact, communicate and even think. We discuss how Twitter takes advantage of — even warps — our “malleable” selves, how politicians like Marjorie Taylor Greene strategically manipulate our attentional environments, how Barack Obama leveraged our human desire to be seen as our best selves, whether discipline or gentleness is more effective in helping others grow, what options we have to resist anti-democratic tendencies in our politics, whether a post-scarcity future — with jobs for everyone — would leave us more or less satisfied, how the greatest evils can be committed by those trying to care for their loved ones, what attending Trump rallies taught Saunders about political violence and more.Mentioned:The Braindead Megaphone by George Saunders“Host” by David Foster Wallace“The Semplica-Girl Diaries” by George SaundersBullshit Jobs by David Graeber“What It Means to Be Kind in a Cruel World” by The Ezra Klein Show“I Didn't Want It to Be True, but the Medium Really Is the Message” by Ezra KleinBook Recommendations:The Storm Is Here by Luke MogelsonSugar Street by Jonathan DeeMarlena by Julie BuntinThoughts?
