“Hey, big 300th episode coming up soon…what movie should we watch?” A complex question with a simple answer. We watched 300, one of Zack Snyder's first movies, and brought back OG co-hosts Ricky and April to weigh in. Adding a unique twist to the matter: only one of these five folks had ever seen this movie before.Later, of course, we look back at some of our favorite memories from our first 300 episodes. What's GoodAlonso - Kyle Turner, The Queer Film GuideDrea - The Cloud Appreciation SocietyRicky - Reservation DogsApril - I Think You Should Leave S3Ify - A Very Gay Book: An Inaccurate Resource for Gay ScholarsITIDICNew “Max” App's Credits Debacle Sparks DGA IreFlorida School District in a Mess Over 5th Grade Teacher's Screening of a Disney FilmJustine Triet Wins the Palme D'Or – the 3rd Woman to do so in 76 yearsStaff PicksDrea - Lynch/OzAlonso - Past LivesApril - Diary of a Mad HousewifeRicky - Serpico, Speak No EvilIfy - Sucker PunchWith Ify NwadiweDrea ClarkAlonso DuraldeRicky CarmonaApril WolfeProducer Marissa FlaxbartSr. Producer Laura Swisher
For the Notorious B.I.G., 1995 was quite the year. Not only was the MC preparing to crush the sophomore jinx with his second album, he was in full campaign mode for rap's King of New York title. Initially endorsed by the July cover of the #1 hip-hop magazine in the 1990's The Source, Big led the race with the year's hottest street record being his controversial “Who Shot Ya?”In the premier episode of Iconic Records, we talk to “Who Shot Ya”'s producer and former Hitman Nasheim Myrick. Junior Mafia MC Klepto gives us a never before told story about which rapper the song was actually aimed at. Rap royalty Fat Joe even joins us to speak on his brotherhood with B.I.G.. But first, legendary hip-hop journalist Bonz Malone reflects on writing that historic cover story for The Source 27 years ago and being a dice roll away from signing Big before Puff.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Welcoming pop star, Aja MyQueen, to Noey Knows Nothing this week! She talks to Noey about one of her most traumatic childhood experiences, and explains what it means to be a "soft woman" in a world that is so demanding of the "strong independent black woman." This week, Kat gives a crash course on the famed East Coast-West Coast rivalry. Which came first: the shot or the song “Who Shot Ya?” Grab your roach spray and let's go on a learny journey. Next, Hayley takes us back… like all the way back… to the beginning of human consciousness. Stoned Ape Theory posits that if you take more than a mouse's arm amount of mushrooms, you can launch your species into drastic evolution. Debuting in 1987, Justice League International came out of the gate with a light and often absurd tone that bucked the “grim and gritty” trend of the late 80s, with Batman and a roster of B- and C-list trading zingers as often as they engaged in fisticuffs. This risky move, coming on the heels of the poorly received Justice League Detroit era, restored DC's premier superhero team to prominence. But is that enough to land it a spot in that Hall of Justice known as ... The Comics Canon? In This Episode: The “Snyder Cut” joke we didn't get to use Is Kevin Maguire the MVP of JLI? Much like the movie we’re discussing today, listening to this episode is like taking a tropical vacation. And to do so, we’re joined by the wonderful actress and writer Mary Elizabeth Ellis (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Santa Clarita Diet). The movie we dissect on the show is the delightfully kooky, Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar. Plus, the gang answers an email about their favorite Black romance movies. And, as always, we’ve got ‘Staff Picks.’In news, Ta-Nehisi Coates is set to write a new Superman movie, Robbie Williams will be portrayed by a CGI monkey, and Dame Judi Dench opens up about her deteriorating eyesight .Please consider supporting the production of Who Shot Ya? by becoming a monthly member at Maximumfun.org/joinIf you’d like to purchase a Jumbotron, go to Maximumfun.org/jumbotronStaff Picks:Ify – Popstar: Never Stop Never StoppingAlonso – The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the RunDrea – The Map of Tiny Perfect ThingsMary Elizabeth – Some Kind of Heaven and NomadlandWith Ify Nwadiwe, Drea Clark, Alonso Duralde and Mary Elizabeth Ellis
This episode will hit you like a fully equipped nomadic van! That’s because the gang is discussing Chloé Zhao’s latest, Nomadland. They are joined by one of Drea’s childhood friends, senior writer for Mpls-St. Paul magazine, Steve Marsh. He’s known Drea for so long that he even refers to her as “Andrea.” Weird. Steve also talks about how his brother is all over Tik-Tok. Alonso is excited about The Muppet Show streaming on Disney+. And Ify is officially the same age as when Jesus died. Plus, the gang answers a question from the Who Shotline about movies one should watch while waiting at the DMV. And, as always, we’ve got ‘Staff Picks.’In news, HBO Max will not remove Woody Allen films from the service and actor Bee Vang speaks out about Gran Torino. Please consider supporting the production of Who Shot Ya? by becoming a monthly member at Maximumfun.org/joinIf you’d like to purchase a Jumbotron, go to Maximumfun.org/jumbotronStaff Picks:Ify – Almost FamousAlonso – The United States Vs. Another fabulous episode for your earholes! This week we discuss the powerful Judas and the Black Messiah, which leads to a very passionate conversation about the Black Panthers. Plus, for the ‘Who Shotline,’ we do our best to recast a modern version of My Dinner with Andre. And, as always, we’ve got ‘Staff Picks.’In news, Martin Scorsese is concerned about “content” and the autistic community is critical of Sia’s debut feature Music. Please check out storyblocks.com/WHOSHOTAnd please consider supporting the production of Who Shot Ya? by becoming a monthly member at Maximumfun.org/joinIf you’d like to purchase a Jumbotron, go to Maximumfun.org/jumbotronStaff Picks:Ify – Godzilla (1954)Alonso – MLK/FBI and Black PanthersDrea – Night Catches UsWith Ify Nwadiwe, Drea Clark, and Alonso Duralde.
A LOT to discuss in this episode. First off, the gang dissects Sam Levinson’s new film, Malcolm & Marie. Ify points out the explicit reasons why this movie was written by a white man. Alonso gives some insight into the world of film criticism. And Drea celebrates the joy and beauty of macaroni and cheese. Plus, they answer a question from the Who Shotline about movie merchandise, which ends up being more embarrassingly revealing than one would think. And, as always, we’ve got ‘Staff Picks.’In news, Lil Yachty is producing a movie based on the game ‘Uno’, 185 LGBTQ German actors “come out”, and Charisma Carpenter speaks her truth. Please check out storyblocks.com/WHOSHOTAnd please consider supporting the production of Who Shot Ya? by becoming a monthly member at Maximumfun.org/joinIf you’d like to purchase a Jumbotron, go to Maximumfun.org/jumbotronStaff Picks:Ify – She’s Gotta Have ItAlonso – Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?Drea – Beyond the LightsWith Ify Nwadiwe, Drea Clark, and Alonso Duralde.

Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie directors! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between. On this strangest of holiday seasons, Conor and I had a lovely conversation with filmmaker Deon Taylor, whose new thriller Fatale is now in theaters and available on demand. We chat about the genre flicks that Hollywood won't make anymore and Taylor's determination to keep making them. He talks about his hope for people to seek out Fatale in theaters where safe, his journey to directing stars like Hilary Swank and Michael Ealy, and the 90s thrillers he's used as inspiration for his own pictures. We also dive into some lesser-known, Christmas-set noirs from the 1940s: Christmas Holiday (written by Mank himself!) and Lady in the Lake, Robert Montgomery's adaptation of the Raymond Chandler mystery. There's some additional recommendations for holiday-ish movies, some you may know, some you may not. Finally, two recommendations of cool things our friends did. There's a collection of writing for Criterion, which features past-and-future guest Moeko Fujii's great piece on Toshiro Mifune. And there's buddy and Who Shot Ya? co-host Alonso Duralde's book Have Yourself a Movie Little Christmas, a perfect gift for the holidays and a perfect tool to prep for next year! Be sure to give us a follow on Twitter and Facebook at @TFSBSide. Also enter our giveaways, get access to our private Slack channel, and support new episodes by becoming a Patreon contributor. We are also now on Spotify and Stitcher. Enjoy!

The Upful LIFE Podcast proudly presents LIVESTREAM 101. This program intends to be a resource to the live music culture and music communities across genre, scene, and geography. Episode 031 - ISOLATION STATION v.3 will focus on blanketing the wild wild west of live-streaming, in the voices of four esteemed professionals in the digital music space, each certifiable live music lifers. TED KARTZMAN (YouTube, co-founder of JamBase) & LIZ MOODY (digital music rights attorney, has worked wth Pandora, YouTube, Spotify, artists, festivals) - intro at 8:00, discussion at 13:00. JOSH BLAKE (iamavl, JBOT, GFE) intro at 51:00 CHRIS GELBUDA (Nashville-based songwriter/guitarist) intro at 1hr 39min ISOLATION STATION v.3 TEDDY KARTZMAN is a huge reason why I even have a modicum of a career in the music industry. As co-founder of JamBase back in 1999, TK (unwittingly) blazed a path for me and numerous others into the world of digital music journalism. Along with his partners Andy Gadiel, Deanne Herman and others, he opened a door to chase my passion and follow my muse with sharing words about music experiences. Like so many, I am forever in his debt, and Teddy is nothing short of a pioneer. TK has been a major presence in the digital music space for two decades, having worked with Rhapsody, Google, YouTube, and a number of other tech music endeavors. For several years he managed The SLiP, among others, and has been a tireless champion for independent and underground artists. Ted Kartzman founded & remains on the JamBase Board of Directions. This roundtable discussion on the real-time realities of Livestreaming was as much (if not more) his brainchild than my own. This podcast is honored and privileged to host a professional of the stature & resume of one LIZ MOODY. A quick Google of her name will show you just why, as she's been a major player in the digital music space for roughly 20 years, too. Currently the Chair of New Media at Granderson Des Roches, she's an attorney who has worked with industry giants like Pandora, Spotify, YouTube, and a number of endeavors that came before. As such, she's uniquely qualified to share her experiences on these salient topics of the day. When I was researching her bonafides to prepare for this dialogue, I was struck by how impactful her work in the streaming/music rights sector is. It seems any time she took a new job at a major organization, or announced a partnership or project, it was covered by the industry news agencies. Wherever she went, whatever she did, it was reported. So naturally, I was super stoked that she felt like this show was worth her time. Her perspective is as fascinating as it is informative; I believe the proof is in the pudding. Liz Moody is the EF Hutton of our current reality; when she speaks, everybody should listen. JOSH BLAKE is another pioneer in the digital music space, as well as a thriving musician and an essential cog in the cosmic art community that makes Asheville, NC such a beacon of light in the SouthEast. He's been rooted and growing there for 23 years. Josh is a founder and partner in iamavl, the pre-eminent independent concert-broadcasting/live-streaming company of its kind, a total unicorn of sorts. Find out why that is, who they are and how they got there in this revealing, inspiring conversation. Josh Blake is a tremendous musician in his own right, and he pulls back the curtain on his latest album Nothing's in the Way, in addition to a number of other musical irons in the proverbial fire. Of course, we had to get into his OG squad, Granola Funk Express (GFE) with a brief but beautiful saunter down memory lane with Josh about his seminal squadron, a (pure) light years ahead of it's time misfit live hip-hop ensemble that was born in a Rainbow Family kitchen, a group and their music that changed the game, and people's lives. Josh Blake was kind to revisit those glory days, and a whole lot more. Check him out at www.JoshBlakeMusic.com & https://iamavl.com/ CHRIS GELBUDA is a music maker and happiness-bringer. A successful songwriter from the Chicago area who calls Nashville home, Buda packs an enigmatic personality into his music that can make you laugh and/or cry, sometimes in the same song. He's also a treasured buddy to many, a real force of nature to his friends, peers, and several music communities. Chris lets us know about some of his very special charity livestreams, and how performing in that medium feels to him. We also get a little peek into his Nashville career, big-time songwriting in the world of pop country music. Gelbuda was an essential member of Van Ghost on their magnum opus The Ghost Unit, an album recorded in Trey Anastasio's famed Barn studio in Vermont.. He's worked with and wrote songs for mega stars like John Legend, Meghan Trainor, Mike Gordon & Phil Lesh. Chris is also a fantastic follow on social media, where he lets his phanaticism fly with no-holds barred commentary about the performances of his favorite band. Naturally, we had to check in with him about the latest happenings with our beloved boys , The Phish from Vermont.
