Are you curious about the true scope and scale of nonprofit employment in America? Ever wonder how nonprofit jobs weathered the pandemic compared to for-profit jobs? In this episode, host Rusty Stahl speaks with Dr. Alan J. Abramson and Chelsea Newhouse, both of George Mason University, about the numbers behind the nonprofit workforce, and their implications for funders, policymakers, and nonprofit leaders. The conversation reveals crucial facts about nonprofit employment based on George Mason's latest report. Abramson and Newhouse discuss how nonprofits lost 580,000 workers during the early pandemic but weathered the initial downturn better than for-profits. They explore common misconceptions about nonprofit funding and highlight how the sector has struggled to fully restore its workforce. Our guests introduce their Nonprofit Works, a free, user-friendly tool that provides high-level data about how many Americans earn a living through nonprofit work, and how much money nonprofits add to the economy in annual wages. The database allows users to segment this data by sub-sector and geography, and compare it to business and government jobs. The numbers are drawn from federal Department of Labor data, but the nonprofit employment data are published extremely infrequently, and only with help from scholars at a private, nonprofit university. Alan and Chelsea argue that better, more frequent releases of nonprofit workforce data – including relevant data collected by other federal agencies – would help nonprofit workers gain the visibility and support they deserve in public policy, the media, academic research, and among private funders. You can find all the episodes of this podcast plus our blog, toolkit and other resources at fundthepeople.org. If you want to start a heated debate, pretty much anywhere in the Western world today, just bring up the topic of immigration. While there are plenty of policy issues that drive partisanship today, few are as sticky as the immigration issue. From the arguments of protecting the border and rule of law, to the need to protect immigrant rights and the dynamism that comes with welcoming legal immigrant, there are plenty of ideas, issues, and challenges to work on and argue about. In today's episode, we talk with Dr. James Hollifield, Professor and Director of the Tower Center for Public Policy and International Affairs at Southern Methodist University, about why the United States and the European Union have grappled with immigration for so long. The challenge stems from what he identifies as the "Liberal Paradox", where states need to define borders, citizenship, and rule of law, with the need to respect human rights, uphold values, and welcome new labor. Join us as we take a look at the history of immigration in the U.S. and what these countries can do to solve this issue. James F. Hollifield is the Ora Nixon Arnold Fellow in International Political Economy, Professor in the Department of Political Science, and Director of the Tower Center at SMU in Dallas, Texas, as well as a member of the New York Council on Foreign Relations and a Global Fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Center in Washington, DC.Hollifield has served as an Advisor to various governments in North and South America, Europe, East Asia and the Middle East and Africa, as well as the United Nations, the World Bank, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the OECD, the ILO, the IOM, the EU, and other international organizations. He currently chairs working groups at the World Bank and the IDB and serves on the International Advisory Board of the National Center for Competence in Research (NCCR for Migration and Mobility) of the Swiss National Science Foundation. He has been the recipient of grants from private corporations and foundations as well as government agencies, including the German Marshall Fund of the United States, the Social Science Research Council, the Sloan Foundation, the Owens Foundation, the Raytheon Company, and the National Science Foundation. His major books include Immigrants, Markets and States (Harvard), L'Immigration et l'Etat Nation: à la recherche d'un modèle national (L'Harmattan), Pathways to Democracy: The Political Economy of Democratic Transitions (with Calvin Jillson, Routledge), Migration, Trade and Development (with Pia Orrenius and Thomas Osang, Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas), Herausforderung Migration—Perspektiven der vergleichenden Politikwissenschaft (with Uwe Hunger, Lit Verlag), Migration Theory (with Caroline Brettell, Routledge, now it its third edition), and Controlling Immigration ( with Philip Martin and Pia Orrenius, Stanford, also in its third edition). His current book projects are The Migration State (Harvard)—a study of how states manage international migration for strategic gains—and International Political Economy: History, Theory and Policy (with Thomas Osang, Cambridge). He also has published numerous scientific articles and reports on the political economy of international migration and development.

If you have enjoyed books by authors such as Scott Turrow and John Grisham, you'll love today's interview. My guest is Alexandra Shapiro. She is a former federal prosecutor with nearly 30 years of experience, and co-founder of Shapiro Arato Bach LLP, a prominent New York litigation boutique. She has argued in the Supreme Court, won numerous appeals resulting in the exoneration of previously convicted criminal defendants, served as President of the New York Council of Defense Lawyers, and handled many high-profile cases. Fun fact: Alexandra was one of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg's first clerks on the Supreme Court. Alexandra is the author of the new legal thriller Presumed Guilty, which is based on her real-life experiences on both sides of criminal cases. The novel depicts how prosecutors, because of their motivations and mistakes, can at times destroy lives and promote unjust results. Alexandra walks us through her process of structuring and writing a legal thriller while also being a wife and mother, and staying active in her full-time job. She also gives us insights into what she wanted to accomplish in a novel that she couldn't do through nonfiction.

In Part 2 of our interview with Sonya Weisshappel, the CEO and founder of Seriatim professional organizers and inventory managment experts tells stories from her 23 years of helping people assess, get rid of and donate their stuff. Often precipitated by a crisis or major life transition such as a death in the family or decision to downsize or retire, people confront their belongings and often don't know where to turn. Sonya's mantra is know what you have, and once you know what you have you can determine its value. We discuss the importance of having an inventory of household items when bringing caregivers and home health aides into the home to care for elderly relatives. On the lighter side, Sonya talks about confronting the dusty shoes in the closet and how "stuff" comes to overtake your space. The Scandanavian idea of "death cleaning"--or decluttering along the way rather than waiting till the end. Sonya also speaks highly of Brené Brown's book Atlas of the Heart and the importance of not judging people's styles of collecting and decorating. Sonya grew up in New York City where she started her organizing company, Seriatim, in 1999. Proudly dyslexic, Sonya founded her business in order to avoid writing a resume and now, almost two decades later, she and her Seriatim team have earned themselves a reputation as consummate Chaos Whisperers. In 2017, Sonya became the first organizer to be accepted into the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses Program. She is currently President of the New York Council of Relocation Professionals (NYCORP). In her spare time, Sonya organizes her husband, three children, and rescue dog, Finn. You can reach Sonya at https://www.seriatim.net/ CREDITSHost and creator: Christi CassidyContact: christi@movingalongpodcast.comArtwork by Phyllis BusellMusic by Eve's Blue. The federal legislation known as The Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 (PASPA) outlawed sports betting throughout the United States except in Nevada, Oregon, Delaware and Montana. In 2018, after years of frustration among other states that wanted to legalize sports gambling within their borders, the US Supreme Court overturned PASPA – holding that the PASPA violated the anti-commandeering doctrine of the 10th Amendment. This decision opened the doors for many other states to begin licensing sports gambling operators. Last month, New York became the latest state to legalize online sports gambling – a decision that has been praised by libertarians and sports gambling operators alike, meanwhile criticized by certain other groups. Join the Robert Zicklin Center for Corporate Integrity on Wednesday, February 9, 2022 at 12:30 PM as Baruch College law professor Marc Edelman – our Director of Sports Business Ethics – leads a discussion with Professor Alicia Jessop of Pepperdine University, Professor John Holden of Oklahoma State University, Professor Keith Miller of Drake University and Jim Maney, Executive Director of the New York Council on Problem Gambling, on the law and ethics of legal sports gambling in New York.

Broadway World hailed the work as “gripping, emotional and eerily beautiful” when an excerpt was featured in a sound installation in NYC in May. “Grace Oberhofer has composed a truly fantastic acapella score. https://www.jodywoodart.com/ (Jody Wood) is a New York-based artist using video, installation, performance, and community organization to engage with socially informed content. Jody is intrigued by interpersonal relationships – how they form, how they dissolve, and their delicate underpinnings. She approaches her artwork as an opportunity to explore this fascination and consequently has moved increasingly toward working directly with members of the public. In our conversation, we talk about her social practice art projects and about social issues of identity, behavior, and human connection and dignity, and how they are shaped by institutionally oppressive systems and social stigma. Her project https://www.beautyintransition.org/about/ (Beauty in Transition) partnered with 18 transitional housing agencies in New York, Colorado, and Pennsylvania to establish a hair salon on wheels serving homeless populations. Elements of this project currently form part of the exhibition “All Together, Amongst Many: Reflections on Empathy” at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Art. Choreographing Care, a project supporting care workers in anti-poverty support, started as a socially engaged art project and was adopted into an emergency shelter in Charlotte, North Carolina as an organizational initiative. In 2014, she was the winner of a prestigious fellowship award for socially engaged art from A Blade of Grass in NYC. Her work has been honored with grant support from the New York Council for the Humanities, Brooklyn Arts Council, and the Rema Hort Mann Foundation. Her work has been exhibited internationally and featured in press such as The Atlantic, Hyperallergic, and MSNBC.

Okay…so Civilization isn't CRUMBLING - that's a bit dramatic. BUT housing and living conditions sure did take a nosedive when tenements started being built. What caused this? When did it happen? Who did anything about it? And how did it affect the way communities were being planned? Well, that's what we cover in Episode 9. Enjoy! Episode SummaryHistorian and optimist Eric Foner grew up through McCarthyism and the Civil Rights Movement and learned that one of the best ways to interpret history is that no matter how things are there is an opportunity to make them better. Professor Foner gives an unvarnished primer in American History and you might be surprised at how current it sounds, in this episode of The Sydcast.Syd FinkelsteinSyd Finkelstein is the Steven Roth Professor of Management at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College. He holds a Master's degree from the London School of Economics and a Ph.D. from Columbia University. Professor Finkelstein has published 25 books and 90 articles, including the bestsellers Why Smart Executives Fail and Superbosses: How Exceptional Leaders Master the Flow of Talent, which LinkedIn Chairman Reid Hoffman calls the “leadership guide for the Networked Age.” He is also a Fellow of the Academy of Management, a consultant and speaker to leading companies around the world, and a top 25 on the global Thinkers 50 list of top management gurus.
