In the last weeks of Opening Night, Hadley Fraser kindly sat down with us to talk about his experience with the show and to look back on some of his recent credits too. After graduating from the Royal Academy of Music, Hadley has proven himself to be one of the most versatile actors on the West End stage, taking on principal roles in both musicals and classic plays. Hadley has also worked extensively in regional theatre, championing venues like Chichester Festival Theatre, Sheffield Crucible and Manchester's Royal Exchange. During Josie Rourke's tenure at the Donmar Warehouse, he also worked closely with the Donmar team on a number of shows including Coriolanus, Saint Joan and City of Angels. The Donmar was also where he met his now-wife: Olivier nominee Rosalie Craig with whom they share a daughter. The couple still occasionally work together, most recently on a livestream of Stuart Matthew Price's Before After and we look forward to seeing the pair on stage again soon.In this new interview, Hadley Fraser opens up about his experience as a performer and as a creative. He talks to us about his current experience of putting together Opening Night with Ivo Van Hove and discusses the importance of taking risks, even when in a difficult financial climate. He admits he was aware the show would split opinion but remained intrigued by the avant-garde director's vision of the show and shares his admiration for Wessex Grove Productions, Rufus Wainwright and Ivo Van Hove. As he prepares to take his final bows next month, he remains grateful for the time spent with this company as he looks ahead to life after Opening Night.Opening Night runs at Gielgud Theatre until 18th May with tickets available NOW.

Despite a mixed reception over the years, Southwark Playhouse is currently reviving Stephen Sondheim's early classic Anyone Can Whistle. The show which has light discussions of faith in miracles, corruption and mental illness has seen the likes of Angela Lansbury, Bernadette Peters and Rosalie Craig take on key roles in the show's history. In this final episode of the season, we are joined by Mayoress Cora Hoover Hooper herself: Alex Young. Here, we are treated listening to Alex's experience returning to Southwark Playhouse after playing in Promises, Promises and workshopping The A-Z of Mrs P. After also starring in the National Theatre's revival of Follies, Alex Young also takes time to talk about the enduring legacy of Stephen Sondheim and why his work will continue to live through the years.Over recent years, Alex Young has helped recreate some iconic roles in the musical theatre cannon including Nellie Furbish in South Pacific, Amalia in She Loves Me and Sarah Brown in Guys & Dolls. During this time, Alex has firmly established herself as one of the most exciting leading ladies working on Britain's stages today, taking on leading roles in the West End, Chichester and of course Sheffield Crucible where she has starred in 6 different productions. Today as Mayoress Hoover, Alex is still continuing to receive praise from audiences for her energetic performance as deliciously wicked politician with an equally delicious soprano. In this interview, we hear her reflect over the success of her career in recent years and what it's been like working alongside a new generation of talents in this revival Anyone Can Whistle. We should expect to see Alex Young's name pop up on more theatre posters moving forwards and we hope you enjoy listening along to our conversation.Anyone Can Whistle is currently running until 7 May 2022 and tickets are available here: https://www.southwarkplayhouse.co.uk/show-homepage/anyone-can-whistle/

It's The End! (Kind of.) It's the last episode of the series, so it's time to look back with a little rewind and recap. Over the last few weeks I've spoken to a lot of incredible people, and sometimes I didn't get time to include everything they told me in the main episodes. So in this one, you can hear extra snippets from Rankin (who also accidentally gives the most hilarious answer to a question I've ever had), Danny Wallace, Dr L, and Rosalie Craig. (From the episodes on vemodalen, goya, limerence, and philoprogenitiveness.)I also have some extra emotions for you I haven't managed to squeeze in anywhere else- including the thoroughly depressing mutterseelenallein and the joyous basorexia. (I'm not telling you what they are- you have to listen to find out, right?) They may or may not make full episodes in the future, but for now, I thought I would leave you with some new emotions to chew on. And finally, I'll give you a little teaser on who features in the next series. It's going to be a really good one, I promise...Thanks so much for listening- this has been so much fun to research, write, present and produce. If you're wondering, in the last few weeks Getting Emotional had thousands of downloads, been featured in the Daily Mirror, Daily Express, The Observer, and a bunch of local papers. It's also hit the number 1 spot in Apple's documentary chart, and been featured in the Great British Podcasts newsletter. If that's series 1, just think what we can do in series 2! Of course, none of this would happen without any listeners, so thank you so much for listening and subscribing. If you'd like to get in touch, please do leave a review and drop me a comment, or find me on twitter @getemotionalpod. I'll see you in a few weeks! Today, we're representing the parents. This feeling- the impulse of parental love- will be familiar to many, and so unknown to others. I'm in the latter category, so I needed an interesting mum to talk to, and boy did I find one!Rosalie Craig (@Rosiemae on twitter) is an exceptional award-winning actress, appearing on stage and screen. Most recently, you may have seen her onstage in The Ferryman, City of Angels, or the ground-breaking revival of Stephen Sondheim's Company. She's also a mum, and like other parents, is trying to navigate her life via the love, fear, and joy that comes with having children. I talk to Rosalie about what it feels like to have kids, whether that love was instant, and what it's like being a West End lead who also just wants to get home and tuck their kid into bed. Rosalie is funny, interesting and totally honest about about tricky it can be. In case you're wondering, philoprogenitiveness comes from the now-debunked pseudoscience of phrenology, but don't worry- all will be revealed. Oh, and if you're feeling a little raw about a parent not being around anymore, feel free to skip this ep. I've gone through it too, and I know how it feels. This week's guest is the Olivier and Tony Award-winning playwright Simon Stephens. A mainstay of London's new writing theatre, the Royal Court where he is now associate playwright, Stephens' work with the Sloane Square venue includes Bluebird, Herons, Nuclear War and Birdland. Elsewhere his critically acclaimed plays include Sea Wall, which premiered at the Bush in 2008, Heisenberg, which was seen in the West End last year, and a new adaptation of Brecht's The Threepenny Opera which premiered at the National Theatre in 2016 starring Rory Kinnear and Rosalie Craig. He's perhaps most well-known for penning the stage adaptation of Mark Haddon's bestselling novel The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time which ran in the West End for over 1,600 performances and on Broadway for almost two years – earning Stephens major accolades on both sides of the Atlantic. Last year his new piece with Frantic Assembly's Scott Graham and Underworld's Karl Hyde, Fatherland, premiered at the Manchester International Festival and it now transfers to the Lyric Hammersmith, running from 25 May to 23 June.
After graduating from Rose Bruford in 2001 Rosalie Craig joined the RSC and made her professional debut in Adrian Mitchell’s adaptation of Alice in Wonderland. Her stage career since then has featured leading roles in both plays and musicals including the National Theatre productions of London Road, As You Like It, and Tori Amos’s The Light Princess at the National Theatre, for which she won the Evening Standard Theatre Award for Best Musical Performance in 2013. She is currently starring in Jez Butterworth’s critically acclaimed smash hit The Ferryman at the Gielgud until 19 May, and will return to the same theatre in September to star in Marianne Elliot’s highly anticipated production of Stephen Sondheim’s Company, alongside Broadway legend Patti LuPone. The new version of the show will see Craig’s character Bobbi played as a woman for the first time.
