The man behind Missing Richard Simmons, Surviving Y2K, Running From Cops, and the new Audacy Original podcast Hysterical joins us to talk about the disarming intimacy of The Robin Byrd Show, the comfort of the Ezra Klein and Times Literary Supplement podcasts, the charm of Tim Walz, the inherent danger of new wave as a symbol of gayness, the whimsical intensity of a Richard Simmons exercise class, the real-life horror of mass psychogenic illnesses, the significance of showering go-go boys, the difficulty of coming out while married, and a meet-cute at the Russian and Turkish Baths.
CHEESECAKES! We're off from our regular recap and deep dive episodes for the holiday, and all will be back to normal next week! But in the meantime, we wanted to bring you this interview with PODCAST SUPERSTAR AND GOLDEN GIRLS SUPERFAN...DAN TABERSKI!! Please excuse Patrick as he fangirls and then takes to the fainting couch. Dan is one of the most prolific, and, frankly, innovative podcasters of our time. He's the creative force behind podcast hits like "Missing Richard Simmons," "Running From Cops", and "Surviving Y2K", and just a few weeks ago, he launched his newest project "Hysterical" which was an instant number one hit on all podcast platforms. OH AND HE'S A QUILTER. This guy is the total package. ENJOY!! 1. We spent all of hour one talking about a textbook F' AROUND AND FIND OUT incident that originated in Pearl yesterday with a motorcycle rider decided to say ALL GAS NO BRAKES and try to outrun Pearl Police and run to the criminal safe haven of Jackson, Mississippi. The pursuit ended with a wreck involving the motorcycle and the police cruiser as they got off the High St. exit and the bike downshifted and slowed down very quickly, which caused the cruiser to bump into the back of him, knocking him off the bike and then arresting him. 2. This of course took us down a familiar rabbit hole of discussing rather or not police should pursue criminals on minor traffic violations, I say yes but plenty of people disagree.
Today's episode is a story from Jeannine with our OG co-host and Licensed Family & Marriage Therapist, Kimberly. Jeannine talks about a particular incident involving burying herself on the beach running from the cops, escaping on a Big Wheels, and how the Third Step Prayer changed her recovery, and continues to assist her in her life now. Williamsburg, MI - It started when 43-year-old Kevin Tighe broke into a home in early October. He was chased off by the homeowner, and police tracked him back to his parents home. Kevin made a run for it into nearby woods but had to call for help when he got lost. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
How did 9/11 the day become 9/11 the idea? That question drives award-winning host Dan Taberski (Missing Richard Simmons, Running From COPS, The Line) to shift his focus to what happened on 9/12, and every day after that. 9/12 is a poignant, surprising, and surprisingly funny seven episode series about people who wake up on 9/12 having to navigate a new, radically altered world. A teenager gets caught up in an out-of-control conspiracy theory that he helped start. A Pakistani business owner finds hundreds of his Brooklyn neighbors are disappearing. Joke-writers at The Onion must figure out just how soon is “too soon”? 9/12 asks what it all means. We know what happened on 9/11. But what happened on 9/12 to alter our memory and our perspective forever? Listen to 9/12: wondery.fm/9_12_BusinessWarsAll seven episodes of 9/12 are available to stream now on Amazon Music or Wondery+. Dan Taberski is an expert at pulling on threads. His tireless curiosity and impeccable reporting resulted in a run of acclaimed investigative podcasts, including "Missing Richard Simmons", "Running From COPS", and "Surviving Y2K". He's back with an Apple original podcast "The Line", which uses the case of Eddie Gallagher, a former Navy SEAL charged with war crimes, as a lens to understand the blurred moral boundaries soldiers are asked to operate within when sent to battle. You can listen to "The Line" here.

After more than 1000 episodes, the reality television show COPS has officially been cancelled. For thirty years, COPS has broadcast police officers chasing down suspects and arresting them as entertainment. But according to Henry Molofsky, producer of the hit investigative podcast Running From Cops, the vision of crime and policing portrayed by COPS was often distorted. Today, Henry Molofsky discusses the legacy of the show.
Black lives matter, and the police officers who murdered George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and David McAtee should be brought to justice. We know so many of y’all are doing everything you can to help, but in case you need any direction, click here. (If you can afford it, recurring donations are incredibly helpful to these organizations.) And if you want to *learn* from a podcast instead of just get *distracted* by one about Wholebrities, here are a few you should subscribe to: 1619, Code Switch, In The Dark, On Point, Running From COPS and Seeing White. One more thing: Happy Pride, and never forget we can only celebrate it today because of a riot led by black activists like Marsha P. Johnson. (And here's a pod on that.)

Mary Payne welcomes actor Doug Budin back for another Payne in the Pod episode as they review and discuss Dan Taberski’s newest podcast Running From Cops. Running from Cops is about the longest-running reality TV show in America, COPS. Dan investigates the show and the impact it has had on police culture across American towns and cities. Mary Payne and Doug ponder who really has the final say when it comes to what happens to some individuals on the show. Who holds the most power the actual police or the producers? They give evidence from the Running From Cops podcast to back up their assertions. They then touch on the not-so-great side of the COPS show; everything from people signing releases, people being filmed on possibly their worst day, and civil rights arguments that have taken place over African American chases. Would Doug and Mary Payne recommend Running From Cops as one that needs to be listened too or not? Listen to find out! Catch up on all of the Payne in the Pod episodes, here. A few months ago, Dan Taberski joined us to talk about latest season of his Headlong podcast, Running From Cops, focused on reality television shows about police. One series in particular, Live PD, was billed as a documentary but seemed to fall into the same bad practices as other reality programming. Taberski tried to interview the Dan Abrams, the show’s host, and was never able to get him on mic. Lucky for us, in 2016 Mike interviewed Abrams for The Gist when Live PD was first airing. So we’re airing a few clips of Mike’s conversation with Taberski, the Running From Cops segment about Live PD, and Mike’s 2016 interview with Abrams. Enjoy the cop-a-thon. It's so exciting for us to finally be joined by Beth and Amy, the sisters behind longtime supporter of the podcast, Greenwich Letterpress! It's such a delight to discuss the Halloween episode of Beverly Hills 90210 season five with them. Discussed on this episode: the Día de los Muertos movie Coco, the podcast Running From Cops, and Courtney Stodden's sexy pumpkin patch photoshoot, about which the Daily Mail notes, “The pair were eventually asked to leave the patch by security after they received several complaints from members of the public who found Courtney's attire offensive and her behaviour of a sexual nature.” This episode is brought to you by The Cocoa Fondue Show. The first episode of the TV show "Cops" aired thirty years ago, and in the ensuing decades it's become influential enough to mold the attitudes of new aspiring police officers. But if the show holds up a mirror to law enforcement in this country, it shows a warped reflection. In the podcast series "Running from Cops", host Dan Taberski and his team watched nearly 850 episodes of the show and tallied what they saw: roughly four times the amount of violent crime than there is in real life, three times as many drug crimes, and ten times the amount of prostitution. "Cops", as the podcast points out, makes the world seem more crime-ridden than in reality. It has also inspired copy-cat shows, like the popular "Live PD," that also warp depictions of what's appropriate (and legal) in policing. In this OTM podcast extra, Bob talks to Dan Taberski about the podcast's findings and what the popularity of these shows says about viewers.
