Financial Symmetry: Cluing You In To Financial Opportunities Missed By Most People
Four categories are recognized under current regulations to qualify as an Eligible Designated Beneficiary (EDB). These include the surviving spouse, minor children of the decedent, a disabled or chronically ill individual as assessed at the time of the decedent's passing, and other individuals who are no more than ten years younger than the deceased account owner. If you fall into one of these categories, you'll be afforded more time and flexibility than Non-Eligible Designated Beneficiaries. This is due to recent regulatory changes, underscored by The Secure Act, altering the landscape of inherited IRAs. Outline of This Episode [00:00] The complexities and benefits of being an eligible designated beneficiary (EDB) for inheriting an IRA. [03:34] Eligible designated beneficiaries have two key advantages: more time and flexibility in inheritance. [08:21] Withdrawing from an IRA before age 59 incurs a 10% penalty and income tax; RMDs depend on age, starting at 73 for most people. [10:10] The stretch IRA avoids a 10% penalty by basing RMDs on life expectancy. [15:46] Timing distributions strategically can reduce tax liability. Wait until retirement to avoid high tax brackets. [18:01] Evaluate options carefully when inheriting an IRA, considering tax implications and future changes. ***********

Recorded in late 2023, I had the privilege to talk to Djinn in a noisy cafe in Sim Lim Square, before he rushed off flying back to LA- hence the aggressive background noise cancelling-sorry. We owe Djinn and all those involved with the Movie, Perth- for pioneering Singapore indie films in 2004, when it was a lot more difficult to write, produce, direct and distribute a feature film. A great person to chat with. Lots to share. In this episode, we're diving deep into the world of Singaporean filmmaker Djinn Ong, best known for his film Perth. Djinn takes us on a journey through his unconventional path into filmmaking, starting with his work at the Economic Development Board (EDB) to his experiences in the Hong Kong film industry and eventually into directing. From casting actors off the street to balance the constraints of low-budget filmmaking, Djinn shares candid stories about working with actors like Sunny Pang, working with Producer Juan Foo, his passion for telling authentic Singaporean stories, and the challenges of bringing independent films to life. Join us as Djinn reflects on his creative process, the evolving landscape of local cinema, and his thoughts on the future of filmmaking in Singapore and beyond. Insieme a M. Cucca e F. Shiyan Koh, Managing Partner of Hustle Fund, and Jeremy Au talked about three main themes: 1. New Prime Minister Transition: Jeremy and Shiyan discussed the transition of Prime Minister leadership from Lee Hsien Loong to Lawrence Wong. They discussed the potential challenges that the new Prime Minister would face such as addressing wealth inequality and evaluating the efficacy of current social programs. They also speculated on potential policy shifts that might occur under the new leadership including those related to property taxes, GDP growth focus, and social welfare enhancements. They empathized with local negative/ positive sentiments regarding the future and the dropping Total Fertility Rate (0.97 in 2024) which eventually leads to a shrinking population. 2. Immigration Assimilation & Schools: Jeremy and Shiyan discussed Singapore's distinctive "barbell" immigration strategy, which primarily attracts either high-skill individuals through initiatives like the Tech Pass and Global Investor Program or blue-collar workers, leaving a notable gap at the mid-skill level where many startups find their needs. They highlighted that startups often employ young, promising talents compensated more heavily with stock options, which are not adequately recognized in Employment Pass criteria, and lack eligibility for EDB support typically reserved for MNCs. This situation compels local founders to opt for remote hiring and training, nurturing the next wave of startup leadership in the region instead of inside Singapore. They suggested that the government should broaden and increase the ASEAN scholars program. 3. CTO & Engineering Pass: They proposed the introduction of a "CTO/ Head of Engineering Pass" to attract highly skilled technical rising stars (rather than Tech.pass which is for senior, mature executives). These individuals are more plugged into the next generation of tech needs (e.g. AI, biotech), hungrier to lean in and build, and leverage "robots" that can upgrade the productivity of their startups, clients and the broader SME sector - thus increasing the Total Factor Productivity of Singapore's economy, boosting GDP and thus tax revenues for social welfare programs. In contrast, Malaysia has launched a new open-door tech talent policy to attract and poach startup founders and highly productive immigrants who cannot get to work in Singapore. Jeremy and Shiyan also shared how they hadn't foreseen that USA legislation could be structured into a "collective deadline/ ticking time bomb" phasing - law to be established in principle and win political points - but 1. implemented far out enough to mitigate political repercussions for the US elections 2. give a longer preparation/ migration period for affected advertisers and consumers, 3. structure in discretionary extension periods for more negotiating power 4. given enough space for legal battles over whether it can actually be implemented. They compared this approach to Singapore's swift and China's retroactive law enforcement for passed legislation. Shiyan Koh, Managing Partner of Hustle Fund, and Jeremy Au covered three main topics: 1. Sovereign Wealth Fund Investment Shifts: Jeremy and Shiyan talked about how GIC conservatively deployed 46% less capital in 2023, and Temasek 53%. Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) deployed $31.6 billion in 2023, 53% higher than the $20.7 billion it invested the previous year - alongside other Gulf funds. This is due to high oil prices, investment mandates and national strategies to diversify their economies away from energy dependence. 2. Unicorn Silicon Box: Jeremy and Shiyan discussed Silicon Box (Singapore's latest unicorn), their veteran leadership and $2 billion Tampines facility build-out. They highlighted its role in the shifting landscape of semiconductor manufacturing in Southeast Asia and its implications for the region's economic growth. 3. TheAsianParent Acquisition of Motherswork: Jeremy and Shiyan touched on the parenting platform's strategy to expand from its digital roots into omnichannel physical retail. They also talked about the challenges brought by declining birth rates in several Asian economies, the dynamics of education, and national fertility & family policies. They also touched on Noah Smith (Noahpinion with 139,000+ subscribers) wanting to work for Jacqueline Poh of Singapore's EDB (at the same managerial level as Patrick Collision of Stripe), and the reasons behind the interest in parenting startups in Southeast Asia, spanning services across childcare, IVF and egg freezing. “The account you inherit as far as the IRS is concerned, it's not your retirement account. You are just receiving the money from it. It's still the original owner's retirement account.” Have you ever considered the complexities that come with inheriting retirement accounts? They can be a minefield of rules and regulations that, if not handled with care, can result in irreversible mistakes. Our hosts Stephanie McCullough and Kevin Gaines untangle these complex rules, shedding light on the importance of paying attention when dealing with inherited accounts. Because once that money is taken out, it doesn't go back in. They also look at how the rules change when the original contributor has started their required distributions. Did you know that spouses have a unique privilege when inheriting retirement accounts? They can transfer the accounts into their own and take full ownership. But like everything else in life, there are rules to follow. And then comes the all-important matter of tax considerations. From the repercussions of not emptying the account within ten years to the importance of naming your own beneficiaries, and the complications that arise when inheriting an inherited IRA - Stephanie and Kevin cover it all. That said, it's important to remember that each situation is unique and requires specific guidance. Under the SECURE Act, there are now 3 kinds of retirement plan beneficiaries for determining post-death payouts after 2019: 1. Non-Designated Beneficiary (NDB) These are not people. Examples: Estate, charity or non-qualifying trust (non-look through trust) 2. Non-Eligible Designated Beneficiary (NEDB) All designated beneficiaries who do not qualify as EDBs (see #3 below). Examples: grandchildren, older children, some look-through trusts 3. Eligible Designated Beneficiary (EDB) The SECURE Act exempts these beneficiaries from the 10-year rule. However, if the account owner dies before the RBD, an EDB can elect the 10-year rule. EDBs must be designated beneficiaries. 5 Classes of Eligible Designated Beneficiaries: Surviving spouses Minor children of the account owner, until age 21 - but not grandchildren Disabled individuals – under the strict IRS rules Chronically ill individuals Individuals not more than 10 years younger than the IRA owner. (Those older than the IRA owner also qualify.)
