After nearly a decade, the Scion FR-S or Toyota 86 saw a successor. Now planted formerly under the Toyota banner, the sports coupe has formally entered its second generation. The second-gen Toyota 86 adopts the Gazoo Racing naming conventions and fixes some of the problems customers felt with the first-generation models. The team at Toyota and Subaru increased engine displacement and massaged the tuning to help overcome the older model's lack of midrange power. Now packing a 2.4-liter flat-four under the hood, the GR86 sends 228 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque through either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission. Power travels exclusively to the rear wheels. On this episode of Quick Spin, host Wesley Wren hops behind the wheel of the 2023 Toyota GR86 and puts it through its paces. Wren takes you on a guided tour of the 2023 GR86 and highlights some of his favorite features. Wren also takes you along for a live drive review of the 2023 Toyota GR86. Adding to these segments, Wren chats with Autoweek's Emmet White about the second-generation 86, Toyota's sports car lineup, and the GR86's competition. Closing the show, the pair breaks down what makes the 2023 Toyota GR86 special.

Five years and 50,000 miles in the making, this critique of the 2016 Scion FR-S (aka Subaru BRZ or Toyota 86) puts the long in longitudinal review! Cohosts Eric and Ryan return to help Tim discuss the complete customer experience with the car from encounter, to decision, to purchase, to initial use, to longitudinal reflection. The "Toyobaru" is in our opinions one of the most successful user-centered car designs we've ever experienced. Toyota and Subaru aimed this car at a narrow customer segment and created something with an enthusiastic following and enough sales to continue the model into a second generation. It never tries to be all things to all people, but rather succeeds in creating passion and loyalty in its customers' hearts. This episode is way longer than usual at 100 minutes so here are the segment timings: 00:00-51:00 Encounter, Decision, Purchase, Initial Use 51:00-1:07:34 Longitudinal Use and Final Year 1:07:35-1:21:19 Second Generation Improvements 1:21:20-1:40:33 Special Guest and Conclusion A design this pure, with a customer base so well defined, is proof that large corporations can delight customers if an executive champion and a dedicated team work in concert to achieve their customer-centric goal.
This week we share our first impressions of the 2022 Toyota GR86, discussing how it performed on our track, and how it compares to the previous generation Scion FR-S, Toyota 86, and Subaru BRZ. If you had to pick one car to drive for the rest of your life, what would you choose? Our experts share their choices! Other topics include: can you replace just two tires, or should you buy four new ones each time; why turn signals can be either amber or red in North America, and which color is proven to be safer; and why some vehicles are not crash tested by IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety). ----------------------------------- Have a question for our experts? GySgt Joshua Gage is a Marine Corps JTAC and Fire Support Man currently serving with 2nd Marine Division. Prior to that, Gage was Special Operations Capabilities Specialist (SOCS) at Marine Special Operations Command (MARSOC). He served with MARSOC for five years as a team JTAC for multiple Marine Special Operations Teams (MSOT) during three deployments. He also completed two deployments to Afghanistan with 2nd Battalion 6th Marine Regiment. His first deployment with 2/6 was in the newly cleared Marjah District in 2010. Following that deployment, Gage attended TACP school and was immediately given orders back to 2/6 for their upcoming deployment to Nawa.During the podcast, we discuss how Gage operated as a Fire Support Man and JTAC with the different units he was assigned to. We also have a great discussion concerning mental health and the inaction by those most affected. Like me, Gage is a motorhead so we talk about his new Indian motorcycle and he compares how it rides to his Harley Davidson Dyna. In addition to talking about his motorcycles and the club he is involved in, we go over the work he had done to his Scion FR-S while he still owned it.As always, make sure to subscribe and share the show!YouTube: http://bit.ly/formeractionguysYouTubeSpotify: http://bit.ly/formeractionguysGooglePlay: http://bit.ly/formeractionguysGoogleApplePodcast: http://bit.ly/formeractionguysAppleiHeartRadio: http://bit.ly/formeractionguysiheartr...Contact:Website: www.jcramergraphics.com Instagram: www.instagram.com/jcramergraphics Instagram: www.instagram.com/formeractionguys Twitter: https://twitter.com/4meractionguys Email: formeractionguyspodcast@gmail.com Reference:152 - Walkie-talkie style tactical radio7-Ton – Medium Tactical Vehicle Replacement (Dump truck-sized military vehicle for hauling troops, supplies, etc.)7171 – Patrol Base in AfghanistanABC - ANGLICO Basic CourseANGLICO – Air Naval Gunfire Liaison CompanyBLT – Battalion Landing TeamBRC - Basic Reconnaissance CourseCAR – Combat Action RibbonCLB – Combat Logistics BattalionCO - Commanding OfficerCOC – Command Operations CenterCorpsman – Navy medic attached to MarinesEOD – Explosive Ordnance DisposalFAC - Forward Air ControllerFCT – Firepower Control TeamFDC – Fire Direction ControlFET – Female Engagement Team.FSCC – Fire Support Coordination Center. Modern-day muscle cars dominate this episode of Talking Cars, as we discuss the new 2015 Ford Mustang and updated Dodge Challenger. The gang debates who will buy which car, but everyone agrees that the Mustang has dramatically upped its game. Next, we detail the problems suffered by the Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ as determined by our reliability survey data. Another viewer takes offense to Tom's frequent mentions of interior quality. A viewer question asks us to discuss the Acura TLX, but without comparing it to a Honda Accord. We try, and mostly succeed. Finally, we suggest alternatives to a BMW X3.
