In Europe, the Fiat 500e is leading the electric city-car market for the second year in a row, ranking at the top of that category in Italy, Germany, Spain, Belgium and Austria. But can it achieve similar success in North America? One person who thinks so is Fiat North American Head Aamir Ahmed, and in his exclusive interview with AOTR Host Jack Nerad he'll tell us why. One of the reasons he cites is price. With a manufacturer's suggested retail price of $32,500 (excluding the $1,595 destination fee), the 2024 Fiat 500e appears to be within the reach of young urban dwellers, one market that most EV makers have found difficult to exploit. Fiat's opening salvo in its renewed attack on the U.S. market is the redhot (RED) Edition. The Italian brand partnered with (RED) to introduce what it calls "the coolest, most ethical car in urban mobility." As you might guess, not only is red the color that my baby wore, but also the featured hue of the (RED) Edition with its red-painted exterior mirrors, front grille details, and dashboard. In the interview, Ahmed will hint at other 500e special editions to come and offer more details on the launch strategy he has prepared for this latest EV. In our road test segment this week, Co-Host Chris Teague got a very early drive in the all-new 2025 Subaru Forester. The brand's popular entry in the popular compact crossover utility segment, the Forester has more exterior appeal than ever while retaining the bedrock Subaru values of all-wheel-drive and all-weather capability. While many brands have largely turned their backs on low- and middle-income buyers who are seeking affordability, Hyundai has not, as evidenced by the 2024 Hyundai Venue subcompact crossover tested by Host Jack Nerad. The top-of-the-line Limited test model had a base price of less than $25,000. And, surprisingly, it is filled with more standard electronic safety equipment than some luxury brand vehicles. In the news this week, Tesla is in hot water again with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration over its Autopilot system, and we'll have the details. It looks as if the all-electric Volvo EX30 is about to arrive in showrooms in the U.S., and we'll have more info about the car and its labyrinthine journey to the U.S. Honda has just announced a plan to invest $11 billion in an EV factory in Canada with the financial help of the Canadian government and the Canadian people. We'll have more on that, including our comments. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has offered some recommendations that could make the delivery vans we see everywhere now much safer for everyone. We'll tell you all about that in this episode. So there's plenty of food for thought this week. Thanks for joining us. America on the Road is brought to you by Driving Today.com, Mercury Insurance, and EMLandsea.com , the publisher of Nerad's latest book, Dance in the Dark, which is available HERE on Amazon.com

Morning news and commentary and Wheels Up Wednesday with Eric Peters at EP Autos...the Smart Car App, yikes, fake sounds for EVs, Hyundai Venue review and other news.
The Automotive Troublemaker w/ Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier
It's a great Thursday to be on a car lot as we talk about Kia's plan for a send-off of the Rio. We also talk about EV's effects on road conditions, as well as consumer preferences when it comes to product placement. Show Notes with links:One of the least expensive new cars on the market, the Kia Rio, is set to be discontinued after the 2023 model year.Rio's sales in 2022 were 26,996, marking a 14% drop, and as of July this year, sales have decreased by another 5%.Kia's Monterrey, Mexico plant, where the Rio is manufactured, is set to be retooled for the production of two small electric vehicles.Light trucks, encompassing minivans, crossovers, SUVs, and pickups, made up 79% of all new U.S. vehicle sales in the first half of 2023.Five Most Affordable New Vehicles are now: Mitsubishi Mirage ($19,205), Kia Rio ($20,157), Nissan Versa ($20,763), Hyundai Venue ($23,971), and Nissan Sentra ($23,994).Amidst the rapid adoption of EVs, a recent UK study raises concerns about their potential impact on road health. Researchers suggest that the added weight of BEVs, especially larger models, could lead to more rapid road wear and increased potholes, challenging existing infrastructure and sparking debates on vehicle taxationU.K. newspaper, the Telegraph, with data from the University of Leeds, reported that BEVs cause up to 2.32 times more wear on roads than ICE vehicles, especially those weighing over 4409 On average, BEVs are heavier by about 687 lbs more due to their batteries. The “fourth power formula” suggests that doubling a vehicle's axle weight can cause 16 times more road damage. As BEVs don't contribute to gas taxes, discussions arise about taxing vehicles based on weight or battery weight. Norway already taxes vehicles at a rate based on their weight.Apart from main roads, residential roads, driveways, garage floors, and public parking garages may also suffer damage from heavier BEVs. The debate on BEV infrastructure needs to consider these aspects in addition to charger availability.A BENlabs survey reveals 52% of U.S. consumers favor TV shows with product placements over traditional ads. This shift comes as ad-free streaming rises and traditional TV ads lose traction.66% of North American viewers ignore TV ads; many divert their attention during commercials; 39% believe TV ads lack relevance and value; 31% find them repetitive.Top brands in movie placements include Apple, Coca-Cola, and Nike; for TV, Apple, Nike, and Dell lead.Neil Saunders, Managing Director at Globaldata, noted, “Companies like Amazon properly monetize it on their Prime Video service with the X-ray feature which suggests products based on what characters are wearing, etc.”Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email ASOTU Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/automotivestateoftheunion

Tuesday is coming in hot as we talk about the very present reality of used car leasing. We also talk about the last remaining sub-$20k vehicle as well as the end of a Netflix customer experience that paved the way for streaming as we know it. Show Notes with links:Used car leasing has always been an interesting idea, but carried too many risks. It's hard enough to predict the residual value of a new vehicle, alone a 4-5 year old vehicle. But predictive analytics combined with today's wild market is helping used car leasing gain traction.Used car leasing has the opportunity to protect a lender's risk profile and support a customer in a time where affordability is a major consumer concern.Rusty West, CEO of MarketScan, believes used-car leasing can alleviate the burden of consumers taking large, high-interest loans.“If we continue to shove customers into 84-month and 96-month auto contracts, then we are going to create a difficult environment,” West says. “We must get back to what's good for the whole automotive ecosystem. Focus on getting back to a healthy transaction.”“Used-car leasing remains in the minority, but it is gaining traction. We think we figured it out. Now it's a question of getting the word out.” - Mark Chandler, Credit Union Leasing of America. As the US auto market evolves, the once common sub-$20,000 new car is nearing extinction. While SUVs and trucks dominate American choices, the compact Mitsubishi Mirage holds the title as the last car below this price point. The Mirage is the last new vehicle priced under $20,000, but Mitsubishi will be discontinuing the model over the next few yearsFive Most Affordable New Vehicles are now: Mitsubishi Mirage ($19,205), Kia Rio ($20,157), Nissan Versa ($20,763), Hyundai Venue ($23,971), and Nissan Sentra ($23,994).Remember when Netflix was just a DVD mailing service? Well, as that part of its business ends, the entertainment giant is giving a little extra love to that customer base and will send subscribers up to 10 DVDs of their choice. The final mailing will be on September 29th and current DVD subscribers can choose up to 10 extra titles to be included. Normally, customers are allowed only 8 discs.Since shipping DVDs began in March of 1998, Netflix says it has mailed out more than 5 billion discs to more than 40 million customers.Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos said that running the business had become increasingly difficult as the number of customers who still rented physical movies continues to shrink. “Those iconic red envelopes changed the way people watched shows and movies at home — and they paved the way for the shift to streaming,” he said. Those discs will still have to be returned apparently, with returns accepted until October 27, 2023.Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email ASOTU Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/automotivestateoftheunion

From time to time during the more than five years of The Weekly Driver Podcast, co-hosts Bruce Aldrich and James Raia catch-up on automotive news instead of having a guest. This week on Episode #260 we visit four diverse topics — cheap SUVs, the death of speed racing icon Craig Breedlove, the most expensive states to own vehicles and no ignition new car It's no secret, Hyundai and Kia have drastically improved in recent years. The related manufacturers' vehicles have had some of the industry's top ratings, from economy to luxury segments. The 2023 Hyundai Venue is also the country's cheapest SUV. It only has 121 horsepower and its cargo area is a postage-stamp sized at 32 cubic feet. And it's not available with all-wheel drive. But for about $20,000 its base model is available. Breedlove, who died in April at age 86, was a professional race car driver and a five-time world land speed record holder. A California native living in Rio Vista, Breedlove was the first person in history to reach 500 and 600 miles per hour. The Hyundai Venue is the cheapest SUV in the United States. All of his turbojet-powered vehicles were named Spirit of America, and Breedlove's persona fit the name. He was handsome and flamboyant and perfect for the spotlight. The need for speed was also a family affair. Breedlove's wife, Lee Breedlove, became the fastest woman in the world when she drove the Sonics 1 to 308 mph in 1965. Craig Breedlove was inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame in 2009. Bruce and I also discuss the most expensive states to own a vehicle. And here's a surprise: It's Connecticut where $1,503 on average is the year cost for a minimum insurance policy. The cost increases to $2,999 for a full coverage policy. Finally, Bruce and I talk about the 2023 Volvo XC40 Recharge. It's the first vehicle both of us have driven that doesn't have an ignition button, toggle or switch or any need for a keyfob except to have it nearby to operate the car. A brand-new Range Rover doesn't come along every day — in fact 10 years is more like it — but a new Range Rover has just been introduced and we have the inside story. Our special guest in this week's episode of America in the Road is Jaguar Land Rover Product Marketing Director Finbar McFall. The new flagship of the Land Rover/Range Rover lineup takes the model in a significantly more sophisticated direction. Host Jack Nerad recently had the chance to get the details on that from McFall in this week's interview. If you're in the market for a battery-electric pickup truck, first we'd like to know why. And, next, you should have an amazing range of choices in the next couple of years. We'll discuss the details of the recently announced newcomers in what will suddenly be a very crowded segment. Does electric power make sense for a pickup? Host Jack Nerad and Co-Host Chris Teague will debate that in the news segment. Also in the news segment, the nominee for head of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has vowed to get to the bottom of the safety allegations and investigations that continue to dog Tesla Motors. Will the outspoken Elon Musk find himself and his company in deeper trouble with the feds? In the road test segment, Chris Teague will be giving of his thoughts on the 2022 Hyundai Venue crossover SUV. The small crossover lacks all-wheel-drive, so how did it fare in the recent Maine snowfall? And is Teague still six feet tall? Also in the road test segment, Jack Nerad had the opportunity to drive one of the most unusual vehicles available in the U.S. market this year…or any year. The all-electric Mazda MX-30 has sneaked its way into the U.S. market via California, and we'll have the surprising details for you.
We took the 2021 Hyundai Venue Denim Edition out for a week of testing. What we found is that while yes, it is a value-priced car, aka "CHEAP," It has a lot to offer consumers for the under $25K price tag: space, power, and a lot of tech for its size. Join us as we review this little people mover perfect for urban drivers or seniors just needing small, inexpensive transportation. Also, check out our Queer4Cars YouTube Channel for a video review of the 2021 Hyundai Venue Denim Edition. Tom has a "Hyundai Venue or Rolls-Royce Phantom?" quiz for Damon and Jill, and Damon runs down the latest articles on the Consumer Guide Daily Drive blog--including a test-drive review of the redesigned-for-2022 Mitsubishi Outlander compact SUV.

This week we share our first impressions of the 2022 Toyota GR86, discussing how it performed on our track, and how it compares to the previous generation Scion FR-S, Toyota 86, and Subaru BRZ. If you had to pick one car to drive for the rest of your life, what would you choose? Our experts share their choices! Other topics include: can you replace just two tires, or should you buy four new ones each time; why turn signals can be either amber or red in North America, and which color is proven to be safer; and why some vehicles are not crash tested by IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety). ----------------------------------- Have a question for our experts?
