This week, Sam is enjoying a much-deserved vacation, so we have Jill Ciminillo, managing editor for Pickup Truck + SUV Talk as a special guest. Jill drove the Acura TLX while Robbie had some time with the Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio, which he can drive but can't pronounce. Jill and Tom are both in studio this week. The show opened with Tom reading an email from a listener. Apparently Tom's Studebaker history is a little shaky. The conversation turned to a number of topics, including too-long model names, the sale of 3000 Fisker crossovers to a ride-hailing-vehicle lessor, and a surprisingly hot-selling Jeep model. Still in the first segment, Jill shared her impressions of the 2024 Acura TLX premium midsize sedan. Both hosts agree that the slow-selling 4-door is underappreciated. Listen in for Jill's complete review. In the second segment Jill and Tom welcome Sam Abuelsamid, Analyst with Guidehouse Insights to the show. Sam walked the hosts through the current state of the EV market, and talked about what to expect in the second half of 2024. Sam also talked about the pace of new-technology EV battery development, including solid-state cells. In the last segment, Jill is subjected to Tom's “Mo' Spellin'” quiz. To close out the show, jill highlighted an article she posted recently regarding General Motors' move away from Apple CarPlay.

The Acura Integra Type S might be the most talked about performance Acura now that the NSX is off the assembly line, but it's not the only hopped-up Acura sedan in the company's lineup. Acura's TLX entered the Acura stable in '14, with its second, and current, generation showing up in 2021. Adding to the second generation's performance chops was a Type S model. The TLX Type S packs a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 under its hood that sends 355 hp and 354 lb-ft of torque through a 10-speed automatic transmission. From there, power hits the wheels by way of Acura's Super Handling All-Wheel-Drive system. On this episode of Quick Spin, host Wesley Wren hops behind the wheel of the 2024 Acura TLX Type S and puts it through its paces. Wren takes you on a guided tour of the TLX Type S and highlights some of his favorite features. Later, Wren takes you along for a live drive review of this sporty sedan. Adding to the show, Wren chats with Autoweek's Patrick Carone about this TLX Type S. The pair talk about the state of sedans, how this TLX stacks up against more expensive sports sedans, and more. Closing the show, the pair breaks down what makes this TLX Type S Special.

Acura says the TLX Type S is the quickest, best-handling all-wheel-drive sedan in its history. But can it provide its unique brand of performance in the midst of a brutal Maine winter? That's what Co-Host Chris Teague set out to find this past week as he road-tested the car. Certainly the 2024 version of the Type S has the specs to get the job done. It features improved throttle response in the Sport+ drive mode from its turbocharged 3.0-liter V6. Incorporating tech derived from the twin-turbo NSX, the engine generates 355 horsepower and 354 lb.-ft. of torque. For the 2024 model year, the TLX Type S gets additional features, including a 10.5-inch head-up display and surround-view camera system. Teague will offer his opinions in this episode. In the other half of the road test segment, Host Jack Nerad will evaluate and report on a car that is in some ways very similar to the Acura TLX and, in other ways, its polar opposite. The 2024 Lexus ES 300h is about the same size and competes in the same segment as the Acura. But in its Ultra Luxury form, it makes no attempt to accentuate sportiness and instead doubles down on luxury. The 300h combines a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with an electric motor in a full-hybrid system. Its total horsepower output is 215, which pales in comparison to the horsepower of the TLX Type S. But that isn't the point. With its electric torque, the ES 300h is much peppier than its rating would suggest. And it has plenty of acceleration for the type of cruising it is expected to do. Its goal is total comfort plus uncommon fuel economy, and Nerad will tell you if it succeeds. In the news, the slowdown in the growth of electric vehicles is causing many auto executives around the world to do more than just wring their hands and shrug it off. It's having serious economic effects across the globe, and we'll tell you what it could mean to your household coming up. More positive news: Honda is making wireless AppleCarPlay and wireless Android Auto available to more than half a million owners of older Honda models, and we'll have the details. If you have the right car, wireless functionality could be yours for just $150 or so. You might not yet have noticed, but the auto industry is trying to kill AM radio. Several brands have already dropped AM tuners from their audio systems, and others are threatening to do so. But now an unusual coalition of lawmakers, talk-show hosts, and Luddites is fighting to save it. And if banning AM radio isn't enough, a proposed new California law would put speed governors on every new vehicle sold in the somewhat tarnished Golden State. We'll have more on that revolting development and our comments coming up. This week our special guest is Mike Spagnola, President and CEO of the Specialty Equipment Market Association. His organization does an immense amount of work for companies in the automotive industry, including sponsoring one of the biggest trade shows in the country. So we think you'll enjoy our conversation with him. All that and more are coming up on America on the Road. America on the Road is brought to you by Driving Today.com, Mercury Insurance, YourTestDriver.com, and EMLandsea.com , the publisher of Nerad's latest book, Dance in the Dark, which is available HERE on Amazon.com
On the version of Hot off the Wire posted Nov. 17 at 4 p.m. CT: NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. health officials say at least seven states are seeing high levels of the flu and that cases are rising in other parts of the country. New flu data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows flu is steadily rising. The winter flu season traditionally ramps up in December or January. But it took off in October last year and is making a November entrance now. Louisiana has very high flu activity. There is high activity in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, New Mexico and South Carolina and the District of Columbia. Health officials in Puerto Rico declared an influenza epidemic earlier this month. DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — The United Nations was forced to stop deliveries of food and other necessities to Gaza and warned of the growing possibility of widespread starvation after internet and telephone services collapsed in the besieged enclave because of a lack of fuel. Israel announced Friday that it will allow a “very minimal” amount of fuel into the besieged territory daily. But the shipments appeared to be far less than what the U.N. has said is needed. The communications blackout is in its second day. It largely cuts off Gaza's 2.3 million people from one another and the outside world, and it paralyzes the coordination of aid. WASHINGTON (AP) — The chairman of the House Ethics Committee has filed a resolution to force a vote on expelling Republican Rep. George Santos from Congress. The resolution was announced one day after the Ethics Committee issued a withering report detailing evidence that Santos of New York converted campaign donations for his own personal use, such as trips to Atlantic City and the Hamptons. Santos easily survived an expulsion vote this month as lawmakers stressed the need for due process. But the completion of the committee's report has generated new momentum for ousting the scandal-plagued freshman. Santos announced this week that he would not seek reelection. RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — University of Virginia officials are further delaying the public release of the findings of an investigation into the events surrounding a 2022 campus shooting that killed three student-athletes and wounded two other students. Citing concern about the impact the findings could have on the suspect's pending trial, UVA said in a news release Friday that it would not make a “redacted” version of the final report public available until “after the criminal proceedings.” The suspect is charged with aggravated murder, aggravated malicious wounding and firearms-related counts. Court records show his next court hearing is in February. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is screening imports of cinnamon from multiple countries for toxic lead. It comes after more reports of illness in children who ate pouches of applesauce puree. The pouches were sold in several retail and online stories and have been recalled. The FDA says cinnamon from a manufacturer in Ecuador is the “likely source” of high levels of lead found in applesauce products. At least 34 children in 22 states have reportedly been sickened by lead poisoning. The FDA says no other reports of illness or elevated blood levels have been tied to cinnamon. NEW BUFFALO, Mich. (AP) — Authorities say 11 people were injured when an Amtrak train heading to Chicago derailed in southwestern Michigan. The train derailed Thursday night after hitting an empty vehicle and a tow truck. The train went off the tracks but remained upright. The crash happened near New Buffalo, about 70 miles east of Chicago. The injuries were not considered serious. The vehicle was stuck on the tracks and was in the process of being removed when the train hit both. Amtrak arranged buses to take passengers to Chicago. Eight trains between Chicago and Michigan were canceled Friday while investigators were at the scene. DETROIT (AP) — Honda is recalling nearly 250,000 vehicles in the U.S. because bearings can fail, causing the engines to stall and increasing the risk of a crash. The recall covers certain 2018 and 2019 Honda Pilot SUVs and Odyssey minivans, and some 2017 and 2019 Ridgeline pickup trucks. Also affected are certain 2015 to 2020 Acura TLX cars and 2016 to 2020 Acura MDX SUVs. Honda says in documents posted Friday by .U.S. safety regulators that connecting rod bearings in the engine can wear and seize due to a manufacturing error, damaging the engines. The engines could stall while being driven, increasing the risk of a fire or crash. The automaker says in documents that it has no reports of injuries. Dealers will inspect and repair or replace the engines if needed. LONDON (AP) — The British author of the Booker Prize-winning novel “Possession” has died at the age of 87. A.S. Byatt's publisher, Chatto & Windus, said Friday that the author whose full name was Antonia Byatt died “peacefully at home surrounded by close family.” Byatt wrote two dozen books, starting with “The Shadow of the Sun” in 1964. She published “Possession” in 1990. The novel follows two modern-day academics investigating the lives of a pair of Victorian poets and was adapted into a 2002 film starring Gwyneth Paltrow. Her other works include the novel “The Children's Book” and the short story collection “Medusa's Ankles." Queen Elizabeth II made Byatt a dame, the female equivalent of a knight, in 1999 for services to literature. Used-car shoppers won't have it easy this year or next. Although used car prices have declined from their record levels from last year, they are still high and are coupled with the highest interest rates we've seen in many years. If that's not bad enough, used cars also are currently older. There are fewer near-new vehicles for sale right now than just a few years ago. Edmunds outlines some steps you can take to get the best possible deal during these tough times. PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Police in Maine say a lobsterman jumped from a boat into the water to help save a driver trapped in a sinking car. Police in Portland say the car drove into Casco Bay shortly after noon on Thursday. Police and fire crews were able to force entry into the vehicle while it was underwater. The lobster boat was nearby and Manny Kourinos, who is experienced in diving, entered the water and helped pull out the driver. The 33-year-old driver was hospitalized in stable condition. Police are investigating and say the vehicle was reported stolen out of South Portland earlier in the day. EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — For many years in college football, the booze flowed only outside the stadiums at tailgates. Not anymore. Selling beer and wine has become the norm. According to a survey by The Associated Press of Power Five conference schools and Notre Dame, 55 of 69 of them sell alcohol in the public areas of their stadiums on game days. That's up dramatically over the past decade. Experts say it is a reliable revenue stream. The trend picked up in 2019 after the Southeastern Conference cleared the way for alcohol sales at football stadiums. —The Associated Press About this program Host Terry Lipshetz is a senior producer for Lee Enterprises. Acura showed off a bold sedan concept at Pebble Beach in 2019. Well, as time has shown, that wonderfully styled concept car became the top tier of Acura's TLX lineup and carries the Acura TLX Type S nameplate. While most concept cars are severely watered down in the transition into a production machine, Acura's Type S Concept translated well into its production form. Under the hood of this well-designed Acura sedan is a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 that makes 355 hp. Mated to that V6 is a push-button-controlled 10-speed automatic. On this episode of Quick Spin, host Wesley Wren takes you along for a ride in this flagship Acura as he puts it through its paces. Wren also walks you around the 2021 Acura TLX Type S to show off its design and its features. Wren elaborates on his thoughts with Patrick Carone. Between the drive review and the walk-around, the pair discuss where the TLX Type S fits in the market, its price and its competition. Closing the show, the pair breakdown what makes the 2021 Acura TLX Type S special.

Big News regarding America on the Road. The program has just signed a deal with the Sports Map Radio Network. America on the Road will begin airing on the network on August 14. In conjunction with that, AOTR will change the publish day for its podcast from Friday to Monday. So look for AOTR on a Sports Map Radio Network station near you. And look for our weekly podcast dropping on Monday rather than Friday. As we prepare for our first network show August 14, we'd like to offer you one of our favorite past shows recorded earlier this year. As carmakers introduce more electric vehicles adoption of the technology grows. But a big question is where and how will we charge all these new electric vehicles? Happily, we just interviewed a guy who has the answers to those questions, special guest Bill Loewenthal is SVP Product at ChargePoint, a giant player in the electric vehicle charging space. In business before the current electric-car era began, ChargePoint has thought through and solved problems many of us never knew existed in its quest to make owning and charging an electric car seamless. In his in-depth interview with host Jack Nerad he'll have interesting things to say about issues like the fabled "range anxiety." The 2021 Acura TLX splits the difference between sports and luxury sedan. In the car review segment co-host Chris Teague will discuss the 2021 Acura TLX sedan. In many ways a "tweener" splitting the compact and midsize luxury sedan segments, the car captures some of the best points of both, though Chris points out some of its foibles as well. The Lexus LX570 has big power, big interior, and big styling. Also in the road test segment Jack Nerad will talk about the big pluses and minuses of the 2021 Lexus LX 570 full-size SUV. The kissing cousin to the fabled Toyota Land Cruiser, the LX 570 wears a well-tailored suit outside and is luxury-filled inside. Is it as good as domestic luxury SUVs? Jack and Chris have a disagreement on that. In auto news from around the globe, host and co-host will discuss the just-released 2021 Top Safety Pick Award Winners from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS.) The insurance-industry-funded safety organization named 49 vehicle models Top Safety Pick+, its highest award, and it cited an additional 41 vehicles as Top Safety Pick. Between the two awards, IIHS lauded a total of 90 award winners this year versus 64 in 2020, and we'll tell you about many of them. We'll also tell you about a new and interesting re-mix of Carvana's signature car vending machine. It's located in Las Vegas, and that might give you a hint of where they went with it.

WOW! Joe Biden really did say that if Americans think they have any “right” to own weapons under the Second Amendment for the purpose of “controlling the Federal Government”, then We The People are wrong. He said we will need F-15s and nuclear weapons! Louis Avallone and Stephen Parr compare this declaration by Joe Biden (and the Biden Administration) to the Chinese Tiananmen Square Massacre in June, 1989, where thousands of peaceful demonstrators were brutally killed. Now you understand what the Socialist-Marxist Democrats really intend to do and why they are determined to confiscate all our personally owned weapons…..to leave us as defenseless as those Chinese. And knowing the top leaders of the American military are so deep into the Democrat “wokeness” today is also a concern. Biden definitely was threatening use of the military against the American people, even though the American military is never supposed to be used against us.The State of Mississippi has just been sued by he Mississippi Humanist Association and American Atheists Inc. because their State license plate has “In God We Trust”. They claim it forces them display a religious message on their vehicles, as well as cleaning it violates their Freedom of Speech. Since it is the motto of the United States and has it printed on our money since 1864, this is going to be an interesting case to follow.Winning at anything should not be so important that it justifies cheating, especially not when it involves kids' sports and the adults are the ones doing it. Too much of our culture today had devolved into those depths, however. Rather than saying “everyone is doing it”, good Americans need to start investigating it and working to make it public. (If you know of a cheating story, contact us at American Ground Radio.)Having said that, this segment of @American Mamas is very personal to Teri Netterville and Denise Arthur. Catholic High School in Baton Rouge has just been sanctioned by the Louisiana High School Athletic Association (LHSAA) for recruiting violations, and Championship titles have been stripped for its various State Titles between 2017 through 2020. Apparently, there was some major recruiting of athletes, following scouting of middle schools, which is not permitted. Even though Catholic High School was fined and the titles stripped, the recruited players were not ordered back to their “zoned school of attendance,” and will be allowed to continue being students at Catholic High School. These students were not the ones doing the cheating. It was adults. The Democrats are much more interested in enabling illegals to become voting Democrats than they are about protecting the American citizens. As a result, it seems to have taken the fear of Donald Trump getting to the Texas-Mexico border before Kamala Harris got her “photo opportunity” to finally get her to make the trip. However, if she really wanted to learn about the border problems, she would be going to Del Rio with Rep. Henry Cuellar (D) instead of to El Paso (home of Beto). The problem of a continual decline in the birthrate there start to be a decline in eligible people to replace people leaving the work force because of age, retirement, or death. Germany, Bosnia, Italy, France, Belgium, Japan, South Korea, and the United States are among a number of Nations experiencing a definite decline in the number of live births in recent years. In the US, this trend started about 2007, as the economy dropped, and it really has not recovered. There are several reasons for a declining birthrate, including the cost of raising a child today, and a sense of political instability. The states hardest hit in the last part of 2020 are New Mexico, New York, California, Hawaii, and West Virginia. Except for West Virginia, the other states had the strictest COVID lockdowns. Cars.com tracks several factors to determine how much of each automobile is really a “Made in America” vehicle — meaning where it was assembly, the percentage of its parts are American manufactured, where the engines and transmissions were manufactured, and how much of the labor to make it is actually American. The results can be surprising, and you cannot go by the brand name any more. 1.) Tesla Model 3, 2.) Ford Mustang, 3.) Tesla Model Y, 4.) Jeep Cherokee, 5.) Chevrolet Corvette, 6.) The 2021 Nissan Sentra tries harder than it has in the past 10 years to win the hearts and minds of compact car shoppers, but Sami tried to figure out if it's done enough to blow past very good rivals like the Toyota Corolla and the Hyundai Elantra. Benjamin is puzzled by the 2021 Acura TLX A-Spec, a sport sedan that doesn't seem to fit in to the traditional luxury market and which might be waiting for the Type S trim before it truly makes sense.

Our final debate before the vote for the 2021 NACTOY Awards and it seems we like ...This week's Total Car Score hosts discuss the upcoming North American Car, Truck and Utility of the Year voting, with each of them identifying their personal predictions for which vehicles will win. This includes a deep dive into the all-new 2021 Ford F-150, the Land Rover Defender, Ram TRX and Mustang Mach-E. Other important models the hosts feel have a chance to win include the Genesis G80 and GV80, the Acura TLX, the Nissan Sentra and Rogue and the Kia K5, all of which are discussed in this episode.
This week we share our first impressions of the 2021 Acura TLX sports sedan, and discuss whether it's size and performance gives it an edge over competitors like the BMW 3 and 5 Series (or even a Toyota Camry?!) We also provide options for exchanging out the all-season tires that come on a new car for something better suited to cold climates, like all-weather or winter tires. Our experts give advice on why a Ford Mustang GT might not be the best car for a new driver, and share some RWD alternatives; why bright DLRs (daytime running lights) might keep someone from turning on their headlights at night; and give a primer on everything you wanted to know about motor oil (but were afraid to ask!) ----------------------------------- Have a question for our experts?
Modern-day muscle cars dominate this episode of Talking Cars, as we discuss the new 2015 Ford Mustang and updated Dodge Challenger. The gang debates who will buy which car, but everyone agrees that the Mustang has dramatically upped its game. Next, we detail the problems suffered by the Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ as determined by our reliability survey data. Another viewer takes offense to Tom's frequent mentions of interior quality. A viewer question asks us to discuss the Acura TLX, but without comparing it to a Honda Accord. We try, and mostly succeed. Finally, we suggest alternatives to a BMW X3.
New truck news takes over this episode of Talking Cars. Ford updates the truck-based Expedition; we discuss how the extended-length EL version compares to the Chevrolet Suburban and GMC Yukon XL. The Ford's high point: its new EcoBoost 3.5-liter V6. Next, we sample GM's new compact truck, the GMC Canyon and its twin Chevrolet Colorado. We're impressed overall, but buyers expecting the driving experience of a car-based crossover SUV in this truck might be disappointed. (Like Tom is.) Plenty of viewers asked questions about our reliability data. One protests factoring infotainment systems into vehicle reliability, while another asks about improving reliability in a car's later model years. We answer a question about the Scion FR-S/Subaru BRZ vs. the Honda Civic Si. Funny how that question helps us answer another viewer's query about a reliable coupe for under $20,000. The gang struggles - only for a bit - to choose between the Honda Accord V6 and the Acura TLX. Finally, we tease next week's episode, featuring the Dodge Challenger.
