In this podcast, I interview Eddie Dinel, Senior Director of Product Management at VMware, where he has been since 2002! In his role, Eddie has two key responsibilities. The first is VMware Validated Designs, a new way of approaching the problem of SDDC deployments. And the second is the "Enterprise Readiness" program across all products at VMware, focusing on reducing the friction involved in operating VMware software. Eddie has held many previous roles at VMware, across product development, technical alliances, and IT. He has been involved in nearly every product that VMware has ever shipped. Prior to VMware, Eddie was at Zack Systems and HighWire Press. Eddie graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in History as well as minors in Physics and Computer Science from Stanford University. I have had the pleasure to work with Eddie in most of the roles that I had at VMware. He is a passionate leader with a unique level of depth and breadth across VMware products. I hope you enjoy!

As I started Software Gone Wild podcast in June 2014, I wanted to help networking engineers grow beyond the traditional networking technologies. It’s only fitting to conclude this project almost seven years and 116 episodes later with a similar theme Avi Freedman proposed when we started discussing podcast topics in late 2020: how do we make networking attractive to young engineers. Elisa Jasinska and Roopa Prabhu joined Avi and me, and we had a lively discussion that I hope you’ll find interesting. Listen to the podcast
The control money had on our family led me to work I’d have to do as an adult to unshackle myself from these stories.JJ DiGeronimo JJ DiGeronimo, Founder of Tech Savvy Women, shared the story behind her title with us on Saturday, March 6th and Sunday, March 7th, 2021. She is a featured columnist for Smart Business Magazine, a regular guest on TV and radio shows, and a preferred keynote speaker for many corporate events including Amazon, Symantec, Ingram Micro, Cisco, RIT, VMware, Nestle, WITI, Progressive, and KeyBank. JJ began her career designing computer infrastructures for Fortune 500 companies after graduating with a computer information systems degree in 1995. She stays involved with emerging technologies, as she is a strategic advisor to venture capitalists (VC), investment teams and executives as it relates to routes-to-market and repeatable revenue streams. With 20 years of experience in high tech, JJ advanced from entry-level technology positions into leadership positions within Silicon Valley-based technology companies. Recently she completed eight years at VMware, where JJ focused on Datacenter Technologies: Cloud Computing, Virtualization, and SDDC. Sue Says JJ DiGeronimo is recognized as a thought-leader for women and girls in tech & STEM. Even with this recognition, her numerous requests to speak and after authoring two books, JJ shares she still has moments of questioning herself and her ability. We spoke about what it might take for women to be able to once and for all have a consistent belief in themselves. Great topic!

This podcast introduction was written by Nick Buraglio, the host of today’s podcast. In today’s evolving landscape of whitebox, brightbox, and software routing, a small but incredibly comprehensive routing platform called FreeRTR has quietly been evolving out of a research and education service provider network in Hungary. Kevin Myers of IPArchitechs brought this to my attention around March of 2019, at which point I went straight to work with it to see how far it could be pushed.Read more …
Remember my rant how “fail fast, fail often sounds great in a VC pitch deck, and sucks when you have to deal with its results”? Streaming telemetry is no exception to this rule, and Avi Freedman (CEO of Kentik) has been on the receiving end of this gizmo long enough to have to deal with several generations of experiments… and formed a few strong opinions. Unfortunately Avi is still a bit more diplomatic than Artur Bergman – another CEO I love for his blunt statements – but based on his NFD16 presentation I expected a lively debate, and I was definitely not disappointed. This podcast introduction was written by Nick Buraglio, the host of today’s podcast. In the original days of this podcast, there were heavy, deep discussions about this new protocol called “OpenFlow”. Like many of our most creative innovations in the IT field, OpenFlow came from an academic research project that aimed to change the way that we as operators managed, configured, and even thought about networking fundamentals. For the most part, this project did what it intended, but once the marketing machine realized the flexibility of the technology and its potential to completely change the way we think about vendors, networks, provisioning, and management of networking, they were off to the races. We all know what happened next.Read more …

Many organizations are hesitant to commit to a single vendor for their data center. However, when moving to a software-defined data center (SDDC) model, vendor lock-in may be the best strategy. On the latest episode of World Wide Technology’s (WWT) TEC37 series, WWT’s James Harless and Sean Hicks, along with Pat Dooley from Dell and Jason Lamb from Intel, have a compelling discussion on why this may be your best move. This episode is sponsored by Dell Technologies and Intel. This podcast introduction was written by Nick Buraglio, the host of today’s podcast. As we all know, BGP runs the networked world. It is a protocol that has existed and operated in the vast expanse of the internet in one form or another since early 1990s, and despite the fact that it has been extended, enhanced, twisted, and warped into performing a myriad of tasks that one would never have imagined in the silver era of internetworking, it has remained largely unchanged in its operational core. The world as we know it would never exist without BGP, and because of the fact that it is such a widely deployed protocol with such a solid track record of “just working”, the transition to a better security model surrounding it has been extraordinarily slow to modernize.Read more …

Michael, William and PK join us to discuss how VEBA enables event based automation for vSphere. Every VI Admin knows that little toolbar in vCenter Server showing the Tasks and Events happening in their environment. This is commonly used to track progress of an operation and can also be used for auditing purposes. However, did you know you can do so much more with these events? Imagine if you can trigger specific actions based on a particular event, e.g. "VM powered on" or "Host in Maintenance". And we are not talking about sending an email using the default vCenter Actions here. What if you could do something more interesting by leveraging these events, like sync'ing with Git repos, scanning a VM for vulnerabilities, automatically allocating a DNS entry from your IPAM system or send a Slack update using a scalable event-driven workflow, with minimal code required, in any language you like?
