Conquer Your Fear of Public Speaking: 10 Simple Rules with Author Frank Winters

Online For Authors Podcast

My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Frank Winters, author of the book 10 Little Rules for Sharing Your Story. A father of two fantastic men, public speaker, geographer, and explorer, Frank Winters was intrigued and motivated by a random fact: one of the things he loves the most – public speaking – is the thing most feared by many. His work (as Geographic Information Officer of NYS, President of the National States Geographic Information Council and Chair of the National Pandemic GIS Task Force) gives Frank a breadth of  professional experiences to draw from. Outside of work, Frank coached a youth mountain bike race team to a state championship and served for more than two decades as President of a non-profit ski area. Paying back a lifelong debt to the Boy Scouts of America, he serves as Section Director for the National Camp School wilderness guide program. A recent annual tradition for Frank and his oldest son is racing the 90-mile Adirondack Canoe Classic. In my book review, I stated 10 Little Rules for Sharing Your Story explores his rules for public speaking. However, these rules will help more than those speaking behind a podium. Do you want to be a better communicator with those you love? Do you want to provide a legacy of stories to your children? Do you want to connect more over coffee and bagels? Then 10 Little Rules for Sharing Your Story is the right book for you. Not only does Frank share his rules, but he provides notebooking pages so you can create your own rules around storytelling. My favorite rule is #6 - Think Beyond the Elevator Pitch. Frank believes that if you have something important to say, you should be able to adjust it to the time given to you. If you only have 7 seconds, what would you say? What about two minutes? What about twenty? By thinking of our stories this way, we can learn what parts are the most important and the most intriguing. I will definitely be using this idea in my own speaking! I highly recommend this 10 Little Rules book. In 2017 there were over 47,000 opioid-linked deaths in the United States – a six percent increase from 2016, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Massachusetts is now suing Purdue Pharma, maker of Oxycontin, and members of the Sackler family, one of the wealthiest families in America and owners of Purdue Pharma. The suit alleges the Sacklers made billions of dollars as their company pushed doctors to prescribe the pain killer, assuring the drug had a low risk of misuse, even though they knew it was highly addictive. Purdue is also accused of failing to report doctors who were overprescribing the drug. The company is facing hundreds of different suits by state and local governments across the country. Host Dan Loney is joined by Rob Field, Professor of Law and Professor of Health Management and Policy at Drexel University and a lecturer in the Health Care Management Department of the Wharton school, and Keith Humphreys, Professor and Section Director for Mental Health Policy at Stanford University and Senior Research Career Scientist at the VA Health Services Research Center, to discuss these allegations and more on the opioid epidemic on Knowledge@Wharton.
