“Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will repay him for his deed.” — Proverbs 19:17 As Christians, we're called to care for the poor. But what should we do when someone asks us for money on the street? Should we give cash? Offer food? Keep walking? And how do we show compassion without causing harm? Dr. David W. Jones joins us to help answer those questions. He's a senior professor of Christian ethics at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, where he has written extensively on moral, theological, and financial issues. He also completed his PhD with a focus on Christian financial ethics. According to Dr. Jones, the Bible is clear: God's people should never be indifferent to poverty. Jesus says, “Give to the one who begs from you” (Matthew 5:42), and 1 John 3:17 warns against closing our hearts to a brother in need. But the harder question is not whether we should care. It is how we should care wisely. Start With the Heart When we see someone asking for help, our first instinct may be suspicion. We may assume the person is lazy, addicted, unwilling to work, or responsible for their situation. But before deciding what to give, we should examine our own hearts. Dr. Jones describes this as the danger of being “middle class in spirit”—quietly believing we have what we have because we worked hard, while the person in need must have failed. But Jesus calls us to be “poor in spirit” (Matthew 5:3). The gospel reminds us that God did not wait for us to deserve His mercy. “While we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8). That does not mean every request should be met with cash. But it does mean every person should be met with dignity. Compassion Requires Wisdom Giving cash directly to someone on the street is not necessarily wrong, but it may not always be the best way to help. If the money is used to support addiction or another destructive habit, our gift could unintentionally cause harm. Christian love seeks the good of the other person. That means generosity should be guided by wisdom, not guilt or impulse. One practical option is to offer non-cash help. You might keep granola bars, bottled water, or other simple items in your car. When possible, you could offer to buy a meal. These small acts can meet a real need while reducing the risk of enabling harm. The goal is not to create a rigid rule, but to ask: What is the most loving and responsible way to help in this situation? Do What You Can With What You Know In a brief encounter, you probably will not know someone's full story. You may not know whether their poverty is connected to job loss, addiction, illness, abuse, poor choices, or circumstances beyond their control. God does not require us to know everything. He calls us to be faithful. That means preparing ahead of time, responding with compassion, and helping in the wisest way available. Sometimes that may be food. Sometimes it may be a meal. Sometimes it may be directing someone to a local ministry or shelter equipped to provide deeper care. Think Beyond the Moment Some needs require immediate aid. Others require long-term involvement. If someone is suffering because of a disaster or emergency, immediate help may be exactly what is needed. But when poverty is tied to addiction, exploitation, family breakdown, or long-term instability, a developmental approach is often more effective. That may involve relationships, accountability, recovery, job assistance, counseling, and support from a local church or ministry. Most of us cannot meet every need on our own. But we can support trusted ministries that serve the homeless and poor with both compassion and structure. Start With What Is Closest The needs around us can feel overwhelming. Hunger, homelessness, addiction, and poverty are everywhere. We may want to help everyone, but we cannot. Dr. Jones points to the principle of moral proximity. We are often most responsible for the needs closest to us—our family, church, neighborhood, and local community. You may not be able to solve world hunger. But you may be able to help someone in your church, support a local shelter, serve with a ministry, or build a relationship with someone God regularly places in your path. God has not called you to solve every problem. He has called you to be faithful with what is in front of you. Generosity Reflects the Gospel When someone asks for help, we should not respond with contempt or indifference. We should respond as people who have received mercy. That does not mean giving cash every time. But it does mean asking God for wisdom, treating people with dignity, and being prepared to help in ways that truly serve their good. Biblical generosity is both compassionate and discerning. It refuses to look away from need, but it also seeks to help without causing harm. On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions: I recently received a personal injury settlement. After paying off our cars and nearly all our debt, my wife and I have about $50,000 in a high-yield savings account, no kids, no mortgage, and only two small interest-free revolving accounts left. I'm 44, earning about $80,000 to $100,000 a year, and my wife earns about $50,000. Should we invest all of this money, or is it okay to enjoy some of it? What investment options should we consider? We have an investment property that's either paid off or could be paid off with cash. Since it's basically our retirement savings and we're around 55, we're trying to decide whether to keep it or sell it. If we sell, is there a way to roll the proceeds into a retirement plan, and how should we think through that decision? In this episode, Dr. Killeen explores the idea that while specialization is important, some of the most valuable insights come from outside your field. We are often trained to stay within our lane, but many powerful concepts can be applied across disciplines in surprising ways. Just the same in dentistry, ideas from areas like psychology, business, or even sports can improve communication, leadership, and systems. When we start connecting knowledge from different fields, we open the door to better thinking and new solutions. Stay curious beyond dentistry. Sometimes the best ideas for your practice come from places you would not expect.

Most cleaning business owners are focused on one thing: the next job. But what if the real opportunity for growth isn't in constantly chasing new customers—but in maximizing the value of the ones you already have?In this conversation, we explore the customer lifetime value and why it's one of the most important—and often overlooked—strategies in running a successful cleaning business. Instead of thinking transaction by transaction, this approach shifts the focus to long-term relationships, repeat work, and consistent service delivery.

What happens when technology stops asking us to use our brains, our imagination, and our judgment? Dan Sullivan and Jeffrey Madoff trace the journey from radio and early television to social media and AI, and show entrepreneurs how to stay uniquely human, think critically, and build theatrical companies that technology can't compete with. Show Notes:The shift from radio to television showed how adding visuals can change our engagement with a story, sometimes in ways that make us more passive as audiences.Music videos and MTV forced musicians to become visual content creators, even when their real talent and passion were in the music itself. If you rely on technology as your main point of differentiation, you lock yourself into constant, exhausting adaptation as the tools change overnight.Treat social platforms as corporate media, not “social” spaces, and remember that if the service is free, you and your attention are actually the product being sold.Algorithms tend to amplify negative, alarming content because it gets more attention and clicks, even though it often harms people's thinking and mood. Our brains are more reactive to perceived threats and negativity than to calm, positive information.Great companies are built by entrepreneurs who cast people for roles based on character, potential, and fit, not just past experience or static job definitions.Entrepreneurs also need to consciously recast themselves over time so their role stays aligned with what they do best and find most meaningful. What many people label a “crisis” is often just a loss of convenience or comfort, which is a sign of how little real adversity they have had to face.Technology consistently eliminates repetitive heavy labor, but it doesn't automatically produce more creativity or fulfillment—those require personal choice and intention.Resources: Casting Not Hiring by Dan Sullivan and Jeffrey Madoff Your Business Is A Theater Production: Your Back Stage Shouldn't Show On The Front Stage The Road to Serfdom by F.A. In this episode of Between Product and Partnerships, Cristina Flaschen talks with Francesca Smedberg, VP of Product at Rillion. Together they explore how product management has changed over the past two decades, what it takes to move from shipping features to achieving outcomes, and how curiosity and collaboration can transform a team.A Career Built on Curiosity and ExperienceFrancesca began her career in market research and spent years helping companies test products and pricing strategies. When she joined a startup in 2009, she started as an analyst and quickly became deeply involved in how products were built. She worked alongside engineers to digitize traditional market research processes, replacing surveys and reports with virtual environments and interactive tools. She was often building tools to solve her own problems, creating workflows that would save time and improve insight for customers. Without realizing it, she was already doing product management. Over time she led analytics, digital production, and eventually the tech and product teams. That broad mix of data, customer, and technical work shaped her leadership style and gave her a deep understanding of how products come together from the inside out.Seeing Product Management MatureFrancesca and Cristina discuss how product management has become more defined as a discipline. Early in her career, most of the focus was on delivery. Teams worried about whether they could build something, not necessarily whether they should.Today the focus is different. Good product management connects discovery, delivery, and business context. It asks questions before committing resources and pushes teams to understand problems before defining solutions. Turning a Feature Factory into an Outcome-Driven TeamWhen Francesca joined Rillion, the company had a long history and a complex platform shaped by mergers and acquisitions. Teams were busy, but their work often felt reactive. She saw an opportunity to help them move from feature volume to measurable impact. Her approach was practical. She encouraged clear priorities and learning through action. Instead of asking what to build next, her teams began by asking why. They defined goals tied to company strategy and measured their success by what changed, not by what shipped.Building Cross Functional TeamsFrancesca describes how she and her engineering leaders restructured the organization to support this new mindset. They built smaller, cross functional teams with clear missions and room to make decisions. This structure encouraged focus and accountability. It reduced the friction of silos and helped people think less about whose job something was and more about what needed to be solved. Mixing people with deep institutional knowledge and those new to the company also brought balance. Lessons for Aspiring Product ManagersFrancesca offers advice for people who want to move into product. She suggests learning from established voices in the product community, studying examples from real companies, and finding mentors who can share their own experiences. She encourages people to start within their current organization if possible. Moving internally allows them to learn the product deeply while building trust across teams. Daniel shares his recent experience of acquiring a sizable online group, while Patricia and Jennifer offer actionable insights on using group entry questions, leveraging lead magnets, and organizing communications to engage members effectively.Listeners will walk away with valuable lessons on treating groups as extensions of their business or marketing efforts, including tips on collecting valuable member data, maintaining a strong brand presence, and using groups for challenges or special events. The discussion emphasizes that while building a thriving community takes time and intention, with the right strategies—and some patience—groups can become both highly engaged and financially rewarding. Whether you're just starting a small niche group or managing a massive online community, this episode is packed with inspiration and practical ideas to help you make your group a success. Keywords: social media groups, Facebook groups, LinkedIn groups, online communities, group monetization, growing online groups, business coach, buying a group, group membership, audience building, community engagement, group moderation, standout membership, email list collection, browser plugins for groups, lead magnets, downloadable checklists, business challenges, group engagement strategies, group management tools, group marketing, identifying group audience, group mission statement, newsletter content, authority in online groups, building group value, group cover image, pop-up groups, challenge groups, content posting strategiesHere are 3 key takeaways you can apply today:Define Purpose & Audience FirstBefore launching a group, clarify who you want to attract and what problems you'll help them solve. As UX advocates and practitioners, we tend to focus on the immediate project at hand—the website, the app, the product interface. But that's only a fraction of the actual user experience. Every digital interaction a person has with an organization shapes their perception. The problem? Most companies treat these interactions in silos, leading to a fragmented and often frustrating user experience. The reality is that UX is much broader than we often acknowledge. It doesn't start when a user lands on a website, and it certainly doesn't end when they complete a transaction. If we want to deliver truly great experiences, we need to step back and look at the full picture. The Many Touchpoints That Shape UXBefore a user even reaches a website or app, they've already started forming an impression. Consider:Search engine results and AI responses – The way your company appears in Google results or AI-generated summaries sets expectations. Is your messaging consistent and clear?Online ads and social media – Are these touchpoints accurately reflecting the experience users will have when they engage further?Email communications – Welcome emails, transactional messages, and support replies are all part of the experience. Are they seamless, or do they feel disjointed?Customer support and post-sale interactions – A great digital product can still lead to a poor overall experience if a user struggles with invoicing, onboarding, or troubleshooting. Each of these moments contributes to what we traditionally call customer experience (CX), but in today's digital landscape, they're inseparable from user experience (UX).The Hidden UX Killer: InconsistencyOne of the biggest UX failings organizations face is inconsistency across digital touchpoints. Marketing might promise one thing, while the actual product experience delivers another.A compelling ad says "Simple and Fast!" but the sign-up process is clunky. An SEO-optimized page ranks highly, but when users click, the page isn't relevant to their needs.A chatbot answers a question, but the follow-up email contradicts the information. This disconnect leads to frustration, distrust, and ultimately, lost customers. It's our job as UX professionals to address these gaps—not just within the product, but across the entire user journey.UX Needs to Be a Strategic, Not Just TacticalIf UX teams are only focused on designing screens and interfaces, we're missing a much bigger opportunity. Instead of being purely project-based, UX needs to take on a strategic role in shaping the overall digital experience. This means:Advocating for a unified user experience across all digital interactions. UX shouldn't be isolated within a product team—it should collaborate with marketing, sales, and customer support to ensure alignment.Defining experience principles that guide all digital interactions, from social media to transactional emails.Identifying and fixing broken touchpoints before they frustrate users, not just improving the ones we've been assigned to.Educating teams across the organization about how every digital interaction contributes to the overall UX.Too often, UX teams focus on polishing individual products while ignoring the broader ecosystem. But if our job is to create great user experiences, then we need to think far beyond the boundaries of a single app or website. The Future of UX: A More Holistic ApproachThe shift from project-based UX to strategic UX isn't an easy one. It requires getting buy-in from leadership, working across departments, and often stepping outside our comfort zones. But the companies that get this right—those that ensure consistency, clarity, and ease across every digital interaction—are the ones that build trust, improve retention, and ultimately, create a better user experience in the truest sense. So, as you look at your work this week, ask yourself: Am I designing just for this project, or am I shaping the bigger picture?

Ever made a flippant, seemingly minor decision that radically changed the course of your life?Morgan Housel has experienced this. At age 17, he made a quick decision that ended up saving his life. Sadly, two of his friends were less fortunate. He shares that story in today's podcast episode, and sheds light on the lessons he's learned from it. Housel says that his lifesaving choice — and many of our other important decisions — are snap verdicts, ones that we don't spend much time thinking about. If pivotal moments are decided in a flash, how do we navigate risk? How do we evaluate our options? Housel says this comes understanding concepts that remain constant, consistent, and universal. We need to accept that humans aren't rational. We must appreciate the reasons why the best answer doesn't always win. We ought to remember that we overlook many good things happening around us. These constants will most likely impact our futures. Housel was named by MarketWatch as one of the 50 most influential people in the market. He is the New York Times bestselling author of The Psychology of Money. He joins us to discuss the ideas in his book, "Same As Ever". We're sharing this as part of GREATEST HITS WEEK, a 5-day series in which we're sharing 5 episodes, across 5 days, that originally aired at the start of 2024 (January through March). Is alignment between B2B marketing and sales teams overrated? The concept may be in need of a rethink, say Principal Analysts John Arnold and Rick Bradberry. This week on What It Means, they describe what more productive marketing-sales relationships might look like.
The biggest threats in cybersecurity don't come from outside attackers—they come from within. From toxic personal agendas to a lack of cross-functional collaboration, the real risk lies in how people operate, not just the systems they use. It's a hard truth for many leaders, but one that can transform organizations if embraced. In this episode of Audience 1st Podcast, I had a real, raw conversation with Amy Chaney about what's truly broken in cybersecurity leadership—and how to fix it. We dove into the pervasive issue of personal agendas, the saturation of cybersecurity communities that often fail to deliver, and what separates good vendors from bad ones. Amy also shared her insights on what it really takes to thrive as a Chief Risk Officer, her approach to balancing technical and human risks, and why collaboration—not ego—is the key to solving the industry's toughest challenges.
My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Frank Winters, author of the book 10 Little Rules for Sharing Your Story. A father of two fantastic men, public speaker, geographer, and explorer, Frank Winters was intrigued and motivated by a random fact: one of the things he loves the most – public speaking – is the thing most feared by many. His work (as Geographic Information Officer of NYS, President of the National States Geographic Information Council and Chair of the National Pandemic GIS Task Force) gives Frank a breadth of professional experiences to draw from. Outside of work, Frank coached a youth mountain bike race team to a state championship and served for more than two decades as President of a non-profit ski area. Paying back a lifelong debt to the Boy Scouts of America, he serves as Section Director for the National Camp School wilderness guide program. A recent annual tradition for Frank and his oldest son is racing the 90-mile Adirondack Canoe Classic. In my book review, I stated 10 Little Rules for Sharing Your Story explores his rules for public speaking. However, these rules will help more than those speaking behind a podium. Do you want to be a better communicator with those you love? Do you want to provide a legacy of stories to your children? Do you want to connect more over coffee and bagels? Then 10 Little Rules for Sharing Your Story is the right book for you. Not only does Frank share his rules, but he provides notebooking pages so you can create your own rules around storytelling. My favorite rule is #6 - Think Beyond the Elevator Pitch. Frank believes that if you have something important to say, you should be able to adjust it to the time given to you. If you only have 7 seconds, what would you say? What about two minutes? What about twenty? By thinking of our stories this way, we can learn what parts are the most important and the most intriguing. I will definitely be using this idea in my own speaking! I highly recommend this 10 Little Rules book. When tackling the problem of misinformation, people often think first of content and its accuracy. But countering misinformation by fact-checking every erroneous or misleading claim traps organizations in an endless game of whack-a-mole. A more effective approach may be to start by considering connections and communities. That is particularly important for public health, where different people are vulnerable in different ways. On this episode, Issues editor Monya Baker talks with global health professionals Tina Purnat and Elisabeth Wilhelm about how public health workers, civil society organizations, and others can understand and meet communities' information needs. Purnat led the World Health Organization's team that strategized responses to misinformation during the coronavirus pandemic. She is also a coeditor of the book Managing Infodemics in the 21st Century. Wilhelm has worked in health communications at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, UNICEF, and USAID. Are you the victim of the all-or-nothing mindset when it comes to alcohol? Every time you try and fail to drink less (or not at all), the belief that “I can't do this” gets stronger. But sometimes, you do get it right. And while that feels good, it's also confusing and scary. Because you don't know if the problem is real. Having the occasional hangover is one thing. But normalizing blackouts, brain fog and hangxiety is not a BOSS move.
