Today, in Episode #141 of the Habit Thrive Podcast, I'm wrapping up February's heart month chat by bringing you my top 5 Heart-Healthy, Heart-Loving Habits to do on a daily basis.#1: Movement OutsideWe're talking the bare minimum, here, so no worries! Some of you enjoy long walks or going skiing, and some of you experience barriers that prevent you from getting into things you typically think of as “exercise.”But forget about your standard outdoor activities: What can you do that takes you outside for even just a few minutes?Running an errand like grocery shopping or picking up from the pharmacyTaking the dog outside for a potty breakWalking to the mailbox#2: ConnectionPhysically, emotionally, mentally, spiritually…How do you connect with the world around you?Social media can count; positive interactions with groups can be very effective. But don't forget about those real-life connections like conversations with the cashier when checking out at the grocery store or while standing in line at the post office. And your connections don't just need to be with other people.Take a walk around the block and connect with nature as you see the wind blowing the trees and hear birds calling.#3: NourishmentWe've talked a lot about heart-healthy eating (remember the Mediterranean diet?).But, sometimes, you have to eat with your heart and not just for your heart.Think about how food makes you feel when you're preparing it, when you're eating it, and even after you've eaten.#4: BreathPay attention to catching yourself when you're holding your breath, and take little moments throughout the day to indulge in a few breaths:When you first wake in the morningWhen you step outside to get the paperWhen you sit in your vehicle before leaving for the day#5: SleepSleep is our #1 health habit! (And - pro tip - it is affected by all of these other habits we've already mentioned.)Many of us aren't getting enough quality sleep, so start being a detective about your sleep habits. Is something waking you up at night?A dog being restlessA need to go to the bathroomThe heat turning onHot flashes or discomfort due to menopause As we put these daily habits into place and work toward a daily routine, we find our flow!Lorrie xoxoxLoving the show? In this episode of the JEMS Report, Dr. Ted Lee and Jonathan Epstein from the American Red Cross discuss critical developments in prehospital resuscitation education, especially surrounding Heart Month. Epstein highlights the Red Cross's longstanding commitment to lifesaving training, evolving from traditional community-focused programs to a comprehensive suite that includes Basic Life Support, Advanced Life Support and the newly launched Neonatal Advanced Life Support. The conversation emphasizes the importance of tailored educational offerings for both public and healthcare professionals, aiming to bridge the gap in emergency medical response across diverse communities. The Red Cross's innovative Mission CPR project looks to improve bystander CPR rates in underserved areas, underscoring that every second counts during cardiac emergencies. For EMS providers and healthcare professionals, this initiative represents a significant step forward in achieving better patient outcomes and preparedness in life-threatening situations.
It was a recipe for disaster. In 2023, Stacey Grant was rushed to the hospital with a MRSA infection. It was in her bloodstream, in her lungs, and most likely around her heart. To say she dodged a bullet is an understatement. Because many do not. Cardiovascular disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined and yet only 44% of women recognize that cardiovascular disease is their greatest health threat. On this episode of the HIListically Speaking Podcast, we're changing that for you and your heart. Let's end Heart Month with an empowering story from a stroke survivor, former beauty queen, principal of School District U-46, fantabulous mom and wife, and a lightning bolt of energy and positivity — Natalie Poli. Natalie is living her dream — basking in the spotlight and cheers of the crowd, confidently sharing her grace and talent as a Chicago Bulls dancer. She cared for her health and stayed physically active, yet something unexpected changed her life. She was only 29 when she suffered from a stroke. Luckily, Natalie got immediate medical help when a police officer recognized the symptoms of stroke when he got into Natalie's home. Natalie's road to recovery from her heart surgery has been challenging. It all happened while she was pursuing a Master's Degree and caring for her nine-week-old and two-year-old children. This experience awakened something inside Natalie. She made it her life's purpose to educate, support, and inspire stroke survivors, their families, healthcare professionals, and organizations. She became the voice that tells you to listen to your body. She became the voice that created urgency for taking actionable steps to save lives. Being crowned Mrs. Illinois and Mrs. Midwest International also gave Natalie a platform for heart health and stroke advocacy. Natalie further expanded her reach when she started a podcast called Stroke of Insight, where she interviewed individuals, families of survivors, and organizations to share their experiences and knowledge about the common enemy — stroke. You will undeniably learn and realize a lot from this episode. So tune in to The Ripple Effect Podcast and prepare to get struck by Natalie's contagious confidence, charm, and resilience. This week, Dr. Joel Kahn addresses a bold claim making the rounds: “Cholesterol doesn't matter—it's all about insulin resistance (IR).” Is that really true? Dr. Kahn breaks down the science, explaining how IR is measured, its connection to heart disease, and the best ways to improve metabolic health. Since it's Heart Month, Dr. Kahn also revisits the top risk factors for heart disease—still the leading cause of death for both men and women. He explores the life-extending benefits of a plant-based diet, along with surprising heart health hacks, from flossing your teeth to taking forest walks (yes, really). Plus, new research on why avoiding cigars and pipes is just as important as skipping cigarettes.

It's August and we are into some Summer Throwbacks! We go back to earlier this year and Measha Brueggergosman-Lee, a diva in the true sense of the word: a famous female opera star, with all the fierce discipline and flair for drama that that entails. But Measha is also a mother, a wife, a memoirist, a 7th generation Canadian descended from Black loyalists, on her way to finishing a Masters degree in practical theology. She does everything wholeheartedly, which is all the more inspiring when you know her experience with cardiovascular disease, undergoing open-heart surgery not once but twice. Who better to be our guest as we release this in February, as February is not only Black History Month, but Heart Month as well? Measha was born in New Brunswick, and now makes her home in the Annapolis Valley of Nova Scotia. Currently Artist in Residence with Opera Atelier, Measha has just released an album called Zombie Blizzard, featuring concert arias by Aaron Davis and Margaret Atwood. We talk about love, faith, honesty, race, health, and showing your scars .Measha Brueggergosman-Lee: both her heart and her names go on and on. You Can watch the recording of the show on YouTube. Being an advocate for congenital heart disease feels like the most special and important thing I can do as a Heart Mom, and sharing more about this is exactly what I felt called to do this Heart Month. I share some statistics on congenital heart disease that may shock you, and why I'm so invested in giving Heart Babies the very best chance we possibly can. Hear what my daughter's life will look like living with a congenital heart defect, and a poem I wrote about my experience as a Heart Mom.
