When blood collects in the skull outside the brain and below the outermost layer of tissue surrounding the brain (dura), a subdural hematoma results. This may occur due to head trauma when it is called an acute subdural hematoma. Chronic subdural hematomas may occur due to aging and the increased fragility of blood vessels. The pooled blood may resolve on its own or may require surgical intervention as development of a subdural hematoma can be a life-threatening condition. Symptoms of subdural hematoma can include headache, confusion, change in behavior, dizziness, nausea and vomiting, lethargy or excessive drowsiness, weakness, apathy, and seizures. Subdural hematomas are generally diagnosed by CT scan or MRI imaging. Ashkan Mowla, MD, FAHA, FAAN, is neuro-interventional surgeon at the Pacific Neuroscience Institute® (PNI). He specializes in minimally invasive endovascular procedures to treat conditions and diseases of the brain and spine, including stroke, brain aneurysm, brain and spine arteriovenous malformation and fistula and carotid and intracranial disease. A physician's career path is rarely linear and the influences shaping it are seldom predictable. In the inaugural episode of Moving the Needle in Medicine, host Alex Hajduczok, MD, a cardiologist and heart failure specialist at Oklahoma Heart Institute, sits down with Martha Gulati, MD, MS, FACC, FAHA, director of the Davis Women's Heart Center at Houston Methodist and one of the most recognized voices in women's cardiovascular health. The conversation spans 5 decades of professional formation, from a childhood in Ontario marked by early loss to a career defined by landmark research, guideline leadership, and an enduring commitment to a population long underserved by cardiology. Gulati traces her interest in medicine to her mother, a physicist who was once steered away from medicine because it was considered a male field, and to the early death of a parent under a physician's missed diagnosis. Her path toward cardiology solidified in medical school at the University of Toronto, where a mentor's invitation into the catheterization laboratory proved decisive. That same thread of mentorship runs throughout the conversation: Gulati credits a series of physicians, including the late Morton Arnsdorf at the University of Chicago and Len Sternberg in Toronto, with not only opening professional doors but shaping how she thinks about sponsorship, advocacy, and the responsibility of those in senior roles to invest in the careers of others. The episode's most substantive clinical territory covers the origins of Gulati's expertise in women's cardiovascular disease. A lecture by Nanette Wenger, MD, delivered when Gulati was a medical student crystallized the field's foundational failure: women had been systematically excluded from the studies informing cardiovascular care. Rather than accepting this as background knowledge, Gulati made it the organizing principle of her career. She pursued epidemiological training at the University of Chicago, earned a master's degree in health sciences, and published foundational work on exercise capacity in women using the Woman's Take Heart dataset, work appearing first in Circulation and subsequently in the New England Journal of Medicine. That body of research established both her scientific identity and a clinical platform she has continued to build across appointments at Ohio State University, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, and now Houston Methodist. Gulati also discusses her experience leading the 2021 ACC/AHA Chest Pain Guidelines the first such guideline ever developed, as chair of the writing committee, a role she accepted without prior guideline experience. She describes the political complexity inherent in evidence synthesis when imaging specialties have competing stakes, the iterative nature of responding to thousands of reviewer comments, and the personal satisfaction of successfully incorporating guidance on ischemia with non-obstructive coronary arteries (INOCA) into the final document. The conversation closes with a frank exchange on GLP-1 receptor agonists and their implications for preventive cardiology, physician wellness, and the structural barriers keeping high-cost medications from patients who need them most.
In this episode, Cassandra Vonnes, DNP, GNP-BC, APRN, AOCNP, CPHQ, FAHA, a Gerontological Nurse Practitioner, and member of the GAPNA Communication Team, talks with Grace Sun, DNP, APRN, FNP-BC, an Assistant Dean of APRN Programs at the University of Texas at Tyler, and currently serves as Secretary of the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties. Dr. Sun shares her journey integrating artificial intelligence into nursing education and practice. She explores changes in how students are taught, how AI can enhance but not replace clinical judgment, and practical advice for nurse practitioners and students to confidently navigate this rapidly evolving digital landscape. Dr. Sun also discusses the ethical considerations and leadership roles nurse practitioners can take in shaping the future of AI in health care.Grace Sun, DNP, APRN, FNP-BC, is an Assistant Dean of APRN Programs at the University of Texas at Tyler and currently serves as Secretary of the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties.Cassandra Vonnes, DNP, GNP-BC, APRN, AOCNP, CPHQ, FAHA, is the Nurses Improving Care for Healthsystem Elders (NICHE) Coordinator, Geriatric Oncology, at the Moffitt Cancer Center, in Tampa, Florida. The village of Faha in Ireland in 1962 is the setting of the latest novel by Niall Williams, Time of the Child. The protagonist, Dr. Jack Troy, is a quiet, serious man who lives alone with his eldest daughter — and a world of regret. One December day, a baby is left in his care — and will make him re-think every silence and secret he's ever clung to. Yvette Benavides shares a review of the novel “Time of the Child” by Niall Williams.
Welcome to the Psychedelic Conversations Podcast! In this episode, we discuss the emerging frontier of psychedelic-assisted neurorehabilitation with clinical neurologist Burton Tabaac. We explore his path into psychedelic science, his work with Johns Hopkins University, and the groundbreaking Fathom Trial—a study investigating whether psilocybin, paired with enriched, non-task-based play, can reopen critical periods of neuroplasticity to support stroke recovery far beyond the traditional healing window. We also dive into the legal and regulatory challenges of Schedule I substances, the evolving balance between clinical and ceremonial approaches, and the importance of honoring indigenous lineages while expanding patient access. Together, we reflect on the art of medicine, the role of set and setting, and the hopeful future of psychedelics in neurological healing.About Burton:Dr. Burton J. Tabaac, MD, FAHA, brings a wealth of expertise in neurology and stroke rehabilitation to Rose Hill. As an Associate Professor and Section Chief of Neurology at The University of Nevada's Reno School of Medicine, and Medical Director of Stroke at Carson Tahoe Health, Dr. Tabaac has been at the forefront of innovative neurological treatments. A graduate of the prestigious cerebrovascular neurology fellowship program at The Johns Hopkins University Hospital, Dr. Tabaac's accolades include being a three-time recipient of The Arnold P. Gold Foundation's Humanism and Excellence in Teaching Award and induction into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. He recently published an eight-part paper in the American Journal of Therapeutics reviewing psychedelics as therapeutics for primary care clinicians. Dr. Tabaac's groundbreaking research focuses on the application of psychedelics in brain injury and stroke rehabilitation. Dr. Tabaac was recently appointed by the Governor of Nevada to serve as a member of the state's Psychedelic Medicines Working Group, which provides expertise and testimony relating to the therapeutic use of entheogens. As the host of The Zero Hour Podcast, he engages with leading experts in psychedelic research. His commitment to advancing the field was further highlighted in his 2022 TEDx talk at UCLA, “Mental Health Meets Psychedelics.”Connect with Burton:- Website: https://rosehill.life/- Twitter: https://x.com/burtontabaac?lang=en- LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/burtontabaacThank you so much for joining us!
