Published on the eve of you-know-who's second inauguration, Kurt Gray's new book Outraged focuses on why Americans are so divided and how they might find common ground despite their political differences. Gray argues that both sides of the political spectrum are driven by a desire to protect themselves, their families, and their vision of America from perceived threats. He suggests that humans evolved not just as predators but as prey, making us naturally attuned to threats and vulnerability. This perspective helps explain why different groups feel victimized and outraged by their political opponents. Rather than focusing on facts, which are often disputed, Gray advocates in favor of storytelling and listening as ways to bridge political divides. We talk about power frequently in society, but do we ever really put much thought into status? And what even is status, exactly? On the show today, we talk about how much status matters, and our guest, Dr. Alison Fragale, writes in her new book Likeable Badass: How Women Get the Success They Deserve that resources follow respect, and very little advancement is going to happen unless someone has respect—also known as status. Alison writes that women are largely disadvantaged when it comes to status, and that the aforementioned power is based on status so, ergo, when women in particular have lower status, they also have less power. Status is critically important, but we rarely pay attention to it and have sparsely put words to it—that is until Likeable Badass came along. The book came out September 3 and delves into the science of success—one of my favorite topics to study. Alison's playbook, as outlined in the book, consists of the three steps of understand the game, master the plays, and coach others. She teaches us what the likeable badass solution is, how it's important for women especially to get credit for both likeability and competence (and how it has, heretofore, been so difficult for both to coexist), how things can often get worse as a career advances, not better, and she introduces us to five limiting mindsets that we need to conquer. If you're looking to advance in any workplace, we've got to figure out status, which, simply defined, is what others' perception of us is. Jan-Benedict Steenkamp Jan-Benedict Steenkamp (doctor honoris causa; PhD, MSc, BSc [all summa cum laude]) is Knox Massey Distinguished Professor of Marketing and Leadership at the University of North Carolina, and a lifelong student of history. He is an honorary professor at the European Institute for Advanced Studies in Management, a fellow of the American Marketing Association and the European Marketing Academy. Since his days as an undergraduate student at Wageningen University, the Netherlands (1977–1981), he has held a variety of leadership positions at four universities in three countries, at professional organizations, non-profits, research councils, and a political party. And frankly, it's going to make the process better in the long run, but it's making it awful messy right now." – ERIC"At RevBoss, we do lead generation for hundreds of clients. Most are marketing agencies, PR firms, and business services-type companies. That's probably 60% of our customers. 30% are SaaS technology companies, and 10% are other. Machine shops and commercial real estate are all kinds of odds and ends. And our strategy and mechanism are generally the same across the board. We're email first and primarily email. But increasingly, we're augmenting that with targeted display ads. And sometimes, we'll layer on a LinkedIn program if it's targeted and small and makes sense. We've never done phone. And I know that's your expertise. No, it's more of a personal preference and experience than anything else. We have plenty of clients that have had a lot of success cold calling internally or with partners. And we've worked, you know, we've told plenty of sales leads in the past, hey, yeah, we don't do that. But I do think that phone will work for you. We've just focused on email because we're good at it. We can automate it with a lot of technology and increasingly automate it with many AI integrations. And that's just kind of how we've how we built the business." - ERIC"As a subject line, I'm rather ambivalent. If it works, it works; if it doesn't, it doesn't. We've had clients where we've dropped emojis and manipulated text. One thing I know works at RevBoss is that subject lines should resemble those you'd send to a coworker. You'd never send an email with a subject line like "Increase your XYZ by some percent," right? Good subject lines are casual, like "Hey, how's it going?" or "I have a question about this thing." You'll get the desired result as long as you broadly fall into that category. Emojis and text manipulation are great ideas." – ERIC"Our general approach is three emails over a week, maybe 10 days. One of the emails is usually like a bump or an inline reply, maybe two; perhaps both are inline replies or forwards. Instead of doing five, eight, or 10 emails or touches over an extended period, we like to do short bursts in seven days. Let that prospect chill out for 60 days 90 days, and then do another short burst over a short period of time. We found that the prospects we retarget—say, I email you today, and then if you don't reply after two or three emails, I email you again in 60 or 90 days—roughly convert at the same rate as net new prospects. So, a lot of the success we're able to generate for our clients is based on repetition, process, and ensuring we're landing in the inbox with enough frequency, the right target prospect, and a tight message to get lucky. People-to-people exchanges, especially educational ones, play a key role in the bigger picture of United States-China relations, and sometimes the events with the most impact "occur quietly", said an expert on Sino-US educational cooperation.中美教育合作专家表示,人文交流特别是教育交流在中美关系大局中发挥着关键作用,有时影响深远的事件反而会“悄然发生”。"I'm hopeful that as we continue the dialogue in 2024, we will see even more progress that will help to sustain and support the continuation of educational exchanges and cooperation between the two countries," said Denis Simon, a distinguished fellow at the Washington-based Institute for China-America Studies, in an interview with China Daily.华盛顿中美研究所杰出研究员丹尼斯·西蒙(Denis Simon)在接受《中国日报》时采访表示:“我希望,2024年的持续对话能带来更多进展,这将有助于支持和助力两国教育交流与合作”。Simon most recently served as a clinical professor of global business and technology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's Kenan-Flagler Business School. So that's like 90% of taxpayers don't itemize their tax return. And it's pretty much just like with income. So the 90% 90% of taxpayers the lower income people the 90% lower. So a lot of people don't itemize at all. This doesn't have any effect. So you're only starting with the 10% richest people. And then from there only the people that like exceed that $10,000.” -Jeff Hoopes [11:05]“It's kind of like letting the business pay the tax at the state level, not having it flow through and then only flowing through the after-tax amount. Whereas in the pre world, I was like flowing through the whole amount and being forced to pay a claim. It was like an individual thing. Today's episode features an interview with Mary Margaret Frank. Frank was named dean of UNC Kenan-Flagler effective Aug. 15, 2023. She is a Triple Tar Heel, an academic fellow at the UNC Tax Center and has taught in the Master of Accounting Program. Frank returns to UNC Kenan-Flagler from the University of Virginia Darden School of Business, where she was senior associate dean for faculty development, John Tyler Professor of Business Administration. She also was co-founder and academic director of the Institute for Business in Society. In that role she led the development of the P3 Impact Award, which recognizes leading cross-sector collaboration to improve communities around the world, in partnership with the U.S. Department of State's Office of Global Partnerships and Concordia. Her passion for cross-sector collaboration also led her to establish the Tri-Sector Leadership Fellows program, which brings together graduate students from business, law and public policy.

His team creates and share tools that help people see connections and drive effective and equitable climate action.He and Ted discuss how climate modelling is an important step towards mitigating carbon emissions and making the right policy and personal choices to drive down emissionsAndrew was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, and trained in environmental engineering and system dynamics modelling through a B.A. at Dartmouth College and a M.S. in Technology and Policy at MIT. At Dartmouth College, he became a student of Dana Meadows, who introduced him to the world of both systems thinking and global models as ways for citizens and top decision makers to test their thinking about what it is really going to take to create a sustainable world.He then worked with Ted at Rocky Mountain Institute in the 1990s and in the 2000s with Dana Meadows at Sustainability Institute. Admiral Cedric Pringle is the guest on this episode. Admiral Pringle serves as the 25th President of the National Naval Officers Association (NNOA). NNOA is an organization dedicated to supporting the Sea Services in recruiting, professional development, and retention of a diverse officer corps that reflects the demographics of our nation. Cedric talks about the amazing work that NNOA is doing with bringing STEM to school children and we discuss how impactful it would be if more positive role models would get involved in bringing STEM to middle schools and high schools around the country to provide more opportunities for people to see diverse paths to use these fields in their lives. Cedric shares some amazing insights from his prestigious Naval career and although he prided himself on being by the the book, he liked to remind people that when the book was wrong there is a recourse to change the book. Cedric gave us some good examples of creating a space where you could make mistakes and take risks to grow as individuals, but he also hinted at some steps that helped build the trust of the team if you listen closely. He reminds us that excellence is a journey. Admiral Pringle models a great example of an appropriate way to resist a challenge from someone senior to us in a personal story in his humanitarian work in Haiti. Each story Cedric shares is done so to help build us all up the same way he has built many of his sailors and marines over the years!  Cedric Pringle is a retired rear admiral following a 34-and-a-half-year career in the U.S. Navy. His service culminated as the 31st commandant of National War College at National Defense University. During his distinguished career, he led joint, combined, multinational, and interagency organizations, both at sea and ashore, across all aspects of defense, including full spectrum operations, strategic planning, crisis management, and congressional affairs.  Admiral Pringle earned a BS in Economics from the University of South Carolina, an MS in Financial Management from the Naval Postgraduate School, and an MA in National Security Strategy from the Naval War College. Our consultants receive a lot of questions from clients about applying to MBA programs through The Consortium for Graduate Study in Management. I've heard myths that suggest that applying to one (or more) of the 22 Consortium schools through The Consortium's application is disadvantageous. But as the former director at two Consortium schools, I can assure you that nothing could be further from the truth — provided you meet The Consortium's minimum qualifications. Though the requirements, participating schools, and corporate partners have changed over The Consortium's 57-year history, not only is the organization the best deal in town but it also gives its members an alumni network that extends throughout the 22 member schools. The Consortium history and mission Initially, The Consortium provided opportunities for young African-American men to have a fair chance at rising up the corporate ladder via the MBA. Later, The Consortium added Hispanic Americans, Native Americans, and women to its mix. Membership came along with the fellowship. However, after the Supreme Court decided the Gratz v. Bollinger and Grutter v. Bollinger cases, The Consortium opened its doors to offer membership to selected applicants that further The Consortium's mission to promote the “inclusion in global business education and leadership . . . of African Americans, Hispanic Americans and Native Americans.” Members do not need to belong to one of these groups but must demonstrate the mission through community and professional action and impact. Thus, membership is no longer race based but rather mission driven. Applicants must also demonstrate the ability to succeed in a Consortium member school's MBA program. Consortium member benefits Like the undergraduate Common App, candidates can apply to up to six schools with only one application for a fraction of the cost that the candidate would incur by applying to each school separately. The Consortium membership grants the candidate access to the orientation and corporate partners. Many members receive internship offers before the start of school. To summarize the benefits: Applicants can use a single application for up to six schools at one low cost. Members gain access to a vast alumni network of 22 schools, including mentorship from among the approximately 9,000 Consortium alumni (formal or informal). Students gain access to corporate sponsors at orientation if selected as a member. If selected as a fellow, students receive full tuition and a stipend. As we know, I'm a huge advocate for index investing and today on the More Money Podcast I have two guests who are sharing their expertise on the subject including some of the pitfalls of investing in actively managed funds. Anu Ganti and Joseph Nelesen, both Senior Directors of Index Investment Strategy at S&P Dow Jones Indices, are joining me today and I'm telling you, this episode is chock-full of valuable investing info! Anu is a CFA charterholder and holds her MBA in finance and economics from Columbia Business School, as well as her bachelor's degree in finance and marketing from NYU's Stern School of Business. She is often sharing her expertise with both print and broadcast media outlets and helps lead the index investment strategy team in providing research and commentary on the entire S&P DJI product set, including U.S. and global equities, thematics, commodities, fixed income, and sustainability indices. Prior to joining the team, Anu worked in the asset management space, completing a post-MBA rotational program at Russell Investments within their fixed-income research and trading divisions and also worked as a portfolio manager focusing on emerging market equities at Parametric Portfolio Associates (a subsidiary of Eaton Vance). He also helps lead the index investment strategy team, but prior to working at S&P DJI he headed iShares Institutional Factors Strategy at Blackrock and held roles in exchange-traded product research and development.
