Debbi Mack interviews crime fiction author Seth Harwood on the Crime Cafe podcast. The transcript is below, if you'd like to read it. Debbi: Hi, everyone this is the Crime Cafe, your podcasting source of great crime, suspense and thriller writing. I'm your host Debbi Mack. Before I introduce my guest, I'd like to remind you that The Crime Cafe 9 Book Set is available as well as The Crime Cafe Short Story Anthology. They're both available online on all major online retailers for $1.99 for the boxed set and $0.99 for the anthology, which is a real deal. Just go to debbimack.com and click on either Crime Cafe or my book link to find the Crime Cafe buy links. Now, having said that I am very pleased to introduce the author that I once called the ‘Golden God of Marketing', Seth Harwood. Hey man, how you doing? Seth: Hi, thanks for having me on. Debbi: I am so happy to have you on. I've admired your business savvy and your writing for years, and I gotta say it seems like a million years ago that I first heard about Jack Wakes Up. But I had no idea that you had serialized it as a podcast before publishing. So see—you were way ahead of the curve on all of us. When did you start the podcast? Seth: I started it in 2006 in the summer. I had been a big fan of audiobooks and so I saw that the way that I could put this book out was to put it out as audio in a way that people could get it on the web and interact with it. And that seemed to make so much more sense than putting it on the web as text. So there were guys like Scott Sigler and Tee Morris and a few others at a website called Podiobooks and they were ahead of me, but it was still like very early stuff. I mean you know it's years before something like Serial comes along and people really know what a podcast is. But what we were doing was serializing our books as podcasts. So I did it Jack Wakes Up, I started and then I really found an audience that I could connect to. And I feel like for so long as a writer, that's what I had been looking for and even having gone past that to get books published by big presses, small presses, all different kinds of presses; that interaction with readers, that feeling of I knew people were waiting for my stuff to come out each week. I knew that they were invested in the story and I would hear from them. That level of interaction—that was the best thing ever really. And so you know it was great that I did that and my goal at the time was to get enough of an audience so that publishers would take me more seriously and publish me. And looking back on it now, what I was doing then was even better than working with publishers. And so now I'm going back to that, and I think you've done a lot of self-publishing, other guys have done self-publishing and you know just to find a way to sort of work with the audience directly; I think that's the best thing that we can do. But the rest of the story, yeah, and you probably know more about that than I do. But the rest of the story is that I did like five or six books as serialized audiobooks, podcasts. I put them all out for free, built in audience. And then I started doing Crime Wave, which is how I met you, because I wanted to get more crime stories to that audience that I had and I wanted to help other authors get into the podcasting stuff and sort of helped get their work out there. So, yeah, it was really great and it was a very intense period of my life where from you know 2006 to about 2009, I was doing roughly a podcast a week of 30 minutes of fiction, mixing, recording, editing, putting it out, doing the web posts. And sometimes two a week when I was doing my own stuff and Crime Wave. So it was really a lot of work. Debbi: I know how much work goes into it personally of course. And so that must have been quite hectic for you writing, podcasting, all of that—to be a good time manager. Seth: It must be a good something. But what I did that was helpful was that,

Awwww snap! Check out our brand-new show, GuestGoods. We’re gearing up complete website revision, which we plan to launch before 2012 hits, and we thought it was high time to dish out some of the changes a little early (You see that freshy fresh icon over there? A little taste of things to come. Oh, yeah, you know you can’t wait.) What is GuestGoods? There are a ton of creative innovators out there, and we think it’s cool to share things that Junkies might dig. We’re approaching it from the “If you like Scott’s stuff, you might like this” perspective. We keep this show short! It’s a three-question interview show, and the questions are the same for everyone. Questions are simple: 1) What’s your hot new thing? 2) What’s in it for the Junkies? 3) Where can they find out more? In this episode: We launch the three-question assualt at fellow Junkie Seth Harwood.Seth’s been quite busy over at sethharwood.com, dropping a brand-new podcast called IN BROAD DAYLIGHT, which he’ll tell you all about. He’s also running a Kickstarter campaign to produce killer crime-fiction eBooks. Seth is a hard-workin’ mo-fo, so give him a couple of minutes and — of course — let us know what you think about this show and this format!

SEASON 2, EPISODE 2This week top-shelf author REED FARREL COLEMAN stopped by DSD HQ to chat with Jay Stringer about the new book and more.INNOCENT MONSTER from Tyrus Books:Seven years have passed since the brutal murder that tore Moe Prager’s family apart and six years since Moe brushed the dust off his PI license. But when his estranged daughter Sarah comes to him with a request he cannot refuse, Moe takes a deep breath and plunges back into the icy, opaque waters of secrets and lies. Sashi Bluntstone, an eleven-year-old art prodigy and daughter of Sarah’s dearest childhood friend, has been abducted. Three weeks into the investigation, the cops have gotten nowhere and the parents have gotten desperate. Desperation, the door through which Moe Prager always enters, swings wide open. Just as in Sashi’s paintings, there’s much more to the case than one can see at a glance. With the help of an ex-football star, Moe stumbles around the fringes of the New York art scene, trying to get a handle on where the art stops and the commerce begins. Much to Moe’s surprise and disgust, he discovers that Sashi is, on the one hand, revered as a cash cow and, on the other, reviled as a fraud and a joke. Suspects abound beyond the usual predators and pedophiles, for it is those closest to Sashi in life that have the most to gain from her death. Cruel ironies lurk around every corner, beneath every painting, and behind every door. Almost nothing is what it seems.Innocent Monster is a book of children and parents, of lives lost and found. It is a variation on the theme of good and evil, each often wearing the other’s disguise. Beware the innocent monster for it need not hide itself and it lives closely among us: sometimes as close as the mirror...Praise for Innocent Monster"Sashi Bluntstone, the 11-year-old Next New Thing on the New York art scene, has been abducted, and Moe Prager—former NYPD cop and former PI—is asked by his estranged daughter, Sarah, to join the search. He expects only tragedy; Sashi has already been missing for three weeks, and he hasn’t been a PI for seven years. Now a well-to-do wine merchant, Moe agrees, primarily to attempt to restore his relationship with Sarah. He quickly learns that nothing increases the value of paintings faster than the death of the painter. Suspects abound: wealthy, self-important collectors; greedy gallery owners; odious rival artists; even the victim's parents. But Moe abides. This sixth Moe Prager novel is pretty much note-perfect. Coleman's take on the art world as a den of iniquity is priceless, as is Moe himself—intelligent, street smart, and tough, especially for a sixtysomething. He’s also sophisticated, despite seeing himself as a “poor schmuck from Brooklyn.” He’s a mensch, and his bone-deep world weariness and mordant sense of humor should enthrall lovers of old-school, tough-talking, loner private eyes (think Loren D. Estleman's Amos Walker)."—Booklist (starred review)"In Shamus-winner Coleman's darkly impressive sixth Moe Prager mystery (after 2008's Empty Ever After), the retired Brooklyn PI takes on a baffling missing person case only because his estranged daughter, Sarah, begs him to help. In the three weeks since art prodigy Sashi Bluntstone, the 11-year-old daughter of Sarah's childhood friend Candy Castleman, disappeared from a walk on the beach near her Long Island home, the police have found no trace of the girl, who "skyrocketed to prominence at age four when her Abstract Expressionist paintings... began selling for tens of thousands of dollars." Prager, who encounters a host of ugly characters, including parents Max and Candy, who aren't telling all they know, and resentful painter Nathan Martyr, becomes increasingly sure that Sashi is dead, but keeps slogging along. His past as a cop, his guilt over his wife's murder, and his current career as a wine merchant make Prager a complex character well suited to handle a complex mystery."—Publishers WeeklyTOUR DATES:Oct. 7, 2010, 7-9 pmMysterious Bookshop, 58 Warren St., NYCLaunch Party for Innocent MonsterOct. 14-17, 2010Bouchercon 2010, San FranciscoOct. 15, Friday, 8.30 am: Romance to Murder panel, moderatorOct. 16, Saturday, 3 pm: Monkey is BackOct. 18, 2010, 6.30 pmMurder by the Book2342 Bissonnet St., Houston, 713-524-8597with S.J. Episode #2 of the Phil Rossi podcast, featuring an interview with Seth Harwood
Had a nice long chat with Kali (aka YourGirlKali) from the "Flaws and All" show on BlogTalkRadio, and Rhonda Carpenter of the Podioracket podcast and author of "The Mark of a Druid," about podcasting, promoting podcasts, and related self-promotion.Brief call-in from "CRC the reliever" who also has a show on BTR.Discussed recording and swapping promos with others, leaving voice comments and blog comments. Suggested K7.net, Snapvine, or Google Voice for a voice comment line. I mentioned I'd recorded a comment line reminder for the Dawn & Drew Show which has worked out for me. Noted that podcasters are generally happy to play your promo, if you're willing to promote theirs, and happy to play any voice comments (including mention of your website) that are meaningful about their content. Mentioned producing some content for the Bloodthirsty Vegetarians podcast, with the similar results.Oh, and I won a book on Podioracket earlier, by Brian Rathbone, called "The Dawning of Power." Another on-topic example, since the book giveaway was a promotional effort for Brian's book. (I look forward to reading that. And I like winning stuff. Thanks, Brian!) Brought up blogging about others' podcasts with the same idea in mind.Talked about the usefulness of Google Alerts for keeping track of what people are saying about you, good or bad. (Yahoo Alerts can serve a similar purpose.)Discussed recording audiobooks for Podiobooks.com, and how doing those had helped promote my podcasts, and vice versa. (I have five on there now, and I'm working on my sixth.)Is there such a thing as Too Much Promotion? Our take was that the key is to produce valuable content, make useful comments, add value to the podcasts you're appearing on or mentioned on, and that indirectly promotes your show(s) without getting too annoying. (In my humble opinion.) And if other podcasters do the same for you, they promote themselves without annoying your audience.Rhonda presented author Seth Harwood's appearance on PodioRacket as an example on how to promote without being "excessively annoying" (Fidonet folks will recognize that phrase). I brought up singer/songwriter Natalie Brown's appearance on my show as a similar example. I also discussed playing LeVar Thomas' and City Haze's music on my show while commenting on that on Twitter.Rhonda suggested using Ping.fm for making one post to multiple sites/accounts/outlets. That can be important when you're doing a lot of shows -- as I am, for example. And of course, producing a lot of content can help promotion in itself. While I took a break, I played a tune from City Haze called "On My Way," featuring LeVar Thomas. (See the promotion-related tie-in, right?)Since I use Skype for my BTR shows, I can also use a utility called Callburner to do separate mono recordings of each side of the Skype call, making it easy to edit, especially to add better-quality music to the shows. We also discussed editing for podcasting, and what Rhonda and I both use for that (as lots of podcasters do), Audacity -- free and effective for podcasting. You can spend more, if you like, of course. We're both happy with the latest Beta, 1.3.8, though technically 1.2.6 is the latest Stable version.I suggested voice acting as another option, though that's certainly not for everybody. (There's a Yahoo Group for voice actors, by the way.)I complained about the audio quality on BTR's archive recordings for music (though they're fine for talk, I suppose). I suggested getting a better mike. Rhonda's suggestion was a phone headset for BTR shows. I was thinking more of an inexpensive mike, and Rhonda's suggestion there was a Snowball USB mike, which can be gotten fairly cheaply.Other recommendations: "Podcasting for Dummies," by Tee Morris, Evo Terra and Chuck Tomassi. The Yahoo Group for PodcastersLeo LaPorte's TWiT podcasts, since Kali lives fairly near there, and some of the local podcasting groups in the area, including the one Matthew Wayne Selznick is in.We talked video streaming, including what Phil Rossi did for the release of his novel, "Crescent."We also discussed recording old Public Domain books as I do, and what an all-around outstanding fellow I am at doing that. I agreed humbly. :) But I gave much of the credit to my Samson Zoom H2 Handy Recorder, which is wonderful for a guy with a bassy voice like mine, and worth every penny my sister spent for my Christmas present. Thanks again to Rhonda Carpenter and Kali for talking with me so long.Lots of show notes, but it was after all a two-hour show!
Very little Karaoke, mostly a podcast about the podcast. And pretty young blond ladies.Part 1 -- Comments and ResponsesA PSA from Nobilis, about feedback on podcasts. A little pathetic whining by me in agreement. Seth Harwood's visit. Mentioned the "Aspie Quiz," which come to think of it, I -didn't- mention on the last show.Part 2 -- Amazing TimesTalk about many, many downloads (194 so far!!), and hitting the top of Society podcasts at Podcast Pickle -- which lasted a day. Turns out the NPR Show, "Talk of the Nation," the only more popular show in the genre, is a two hour show. And they podcast the first and second hours as separate episodes. So they get twice as many downloads per actual show they do. Hard to compete on the math alone. A brief Tune about Barack Obama from TR Kelley and the Raventones. Part 3 -- Books and BillsA few new things I did to become a shameless, wealthy podcasting profiteer, namely the Amazon Affiliate stuff I added (including links to all the books I've reviewed that are now available on Amazon.com. Going to add the music, too, where available). Not wealthy yet, though.Part 4 -- Almost Cut My HairHair's getting big and shaggy. Sang part of the David Crosby song. Sorry about that. Maybe a crewcut would be nice for the summer? How about losing the gray beard, too? And job hunting, probably. From the It Doesn't Suck list, "40th Floor" from American Gypsy.Themes: "140 Times" from Bob Baldwin, and "Sovereign" from Kevin MacLeod.

Long before Seth Harwood's JACK WAKES UP went to print with Breakneck Books it came roaring into our homes as a series of expertly-produced podcasts, a serialized publication in the tradition of classic pulps, but with a throaty growl and lightening agility like that of Jack Palms's one true love—his 1966 Mustang Fastback K-Code GT. And in this car we find a fitting metaphor for Harwood's project: retro, but fit for today and the future; fast, really fast, but not so fast it ceases to be user-friendly. For when it does allow us to catch our breath, we also catch sight of the craft Harwood honed while earning an MFA from the prestigious Iowa Writers Workshop. His prose has an immediacy befitting the action, and a poignancy that allows us to glimpse, however fleetingly, the backstory wounds that formed the characters who go flying past at breakneck speed. Shannon Clute, Seth Harwood, and Richard Edwards presented this Cybernoir panel on April 5th, 2008, as part of the Noircon Conference in Philadelphia. Clute and Edwards kick things off with a discussion of how noir style and pulp publishing models seem to provide the fundamental structuring logics of emerging digital media—from blogs to podcasts, mashups to video games. Seth Harwood then relates his own experience of podcasting his first novel, JACK WAKES UP—from producing the initial audio, to embracing various new media in order to cultivate an audience and tap their enthusiasm and skills to promote his work. Finally, all three panelists consider how pulp-logic productions in these various media are likely to change the ways books are published and marketed.
