There literally was no other year like it. When you look at the list of films that were released in the calendar year of 1939, well, the films most people would consider brilliant classics are in the dozens!  You can spend weeks upon weeks watching movies from just that one year, and you would be completely and thoroughly satisfied.  The Academy, however, can only pick just one Best Picture winner ... and although many people have differing opinions on what was the best film that year and what should have taken home the top prize, no one is going to ever minimalize the enormity of one epic movie, Gone With the Wind. The film had so much chaos in its production. However, the final product is one that has made film fans worldwide fall in love with it over and over again with each viewing.  Yes, this is a special film for the history books. Should it still be considered the best film of 1939?  Does film critic, Jack Ferdman, think another film should have won the Oscar that year?   Listen to his take on it as he analyzes everything about Gone With the Wind as well as all the other brilliant films from that year, and hear which film he gives his Rewatch Oscar of 1939 to.Download, listen, and share ALL Rewatching  Oscar episodes.SUBSCRIBE and FOLLOW Rewatching Oscar:Website: https://rewatchingoscar.buzzsprout.comApple Podcasts/iTunesSpotifyGoogle PodcastsiHear RadioPodchaserPodcast AddictTuneInAlexaAmazon Overcasts Podcast Addict Player FMRSS Feed: https://feeds.buzzsprout.com/1815964.rssWebsite: https://rewatchingoscar.buzzsprout.comSocial Media Links: Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, InstagramShare your thoughts and suggestions with us through:Facebook Messanger or email us atjack@rewatchingoscar.comMusic by TurpacShow Producer: Jack FerdmanPodcast Logo Design: Jack FerdmanMovie (audio) trailer courtesy of MovieClips Classic TrailersMovie (audio) clips courtesy of YouTubeSupport us by downloading, sharing, and giving us a 5-star Rating.  It helps our podcast continue to reach many people and make it available to share more episodes with everyone.

REFERENCES En 1962, Alfred Hitchcock accorde un long entretien à François Truffaut.

Murder can be an art, too... So, Hitchcock is doing some THINGS. He's out on his own away from Selznick for the first time in Hollywood, and he's come out with a big swing: can we shoot a movie with no cuts? All one take? Or, at least the illusion of that? And how would such a real-time filming method influence the drama that unfolds? Kinda blew our mind that--apparently--Hitch was the first director to ever try this. And he has ol' Jimmy Stewart along for the ride to add some gravitas. So, how did it work? We watch and discuss!

Alfred Hitchcock's last collaboration with David O. Selznick was not fondly remembered by the most important parties involved (Gregory Peck reportedly hated the film), but it is still a fascinating example of the power dynamics in classical Hollywood, embodying the tensions between the director and the producer. "The Paradine Case" was an absurdly expensive venture with a budget which rivaled that of Selznick's epic "Gone with the Wind". Will we defend this troubled production? Tune in to find out!

Brian Selznick's next book was inspired in part by a famous friend, Steven Spielberg. Billed by publisher Scholastic as a “love letter to the natural world,” Selznick's “Big Tree” tells the story of two sycamore seeds and their quest across time and space to save the world. The 528-page book, featuring nearly 300 pages of illustrations by Selznick, comes out April 4, 2023. He began working on “Big Tree” after Spielberg suggested he write a story of nature, from nature's point of view. “‘Big Tree' is about a kind of hope that can be found in nature,” Selznick said in a statement. “It's about surviving by working together to create a community. It's about moving forward, planning for the future, and growing — even in the face of destruction. The natural world offers so many beautiful metaphors to help us live. Trees need each other to survive in the same way people need each other to survive. And like nature, we need to be adaptable as we grow.” In a statement about the book, Spielberg said, “The tale of the natural world is the greatest story we have to tell, and Brian delivers a brilliant chapter of it in the pages of ‘Big Tree.'” Selznick's previous books include “Wonderstruck,” “The Marvels” and “Invention of Hugo Cabret,” winner in 2008 of the Caldecott medal for illustration of a children's story and the basis of Martin Scorsese's film “Hugo.” This article was provided by The Associated Press.

I close my eyes... only for a moment and the moment's gone... I do declare, ladies and gentlemen, I do declare indeed. We've finally done it. We've finally reached a Best Picture winner that STUCK AROUND. Adjusted for inflation, it's the highest grossing film of all time (and thank god we don't adjust for inflation) it's David O. Selznick's Gone with the Wind starring Vivian Leigh and Clark Gable EVER HEARD OF IT? Statistically more people have seen Gone with the Wind than any other movie ever made but who has the fucking time? This, very easily the most problematic movie we've ever covered, is 3 hours and 40 flippin' minutes long! WHAT GIVES YOU THE RIGHT? Nothing should be that long. Movies, tv, life. Everything should be wrapped up in no more than 2 hours and 15 minutes but Gone with the Wind needs to distract you for an extra hour and a half from all the DISGUSTING WHITEWASHING OF SOUTHERN RACISM AND THE CONFEDERACY. Holy shit. This movie is majestic and terrible. Beautiful and horrifying. Captivating and disgusting. Two more Tuttles for our penultimate Clara Bow episode, a couple of odd genre experiments: "musical romance" Love Among the Millionaires (1930) combines a star-crossed-lovers melodrama with comedy bits featuring vaudeville and future Broadway child star Mitzi Green and a lot of random songs; while No Limit (1931) offers gambling dens, stickup men, pratfalls, redemptive romance, New York location shots, an automat scene, Thelma Todd, and everything else you could want in a movie, according to Dave. We also engage in some bittersweet speculation about what Clara's career would have been like if David O. Selznick had got his way and cast her as the female lead in What Price Hollywood? (the first A Star is Born), and she'd been taken under Pando S. In many ways, the story of TVA mirrors those of many other grass-roots style operations that have taken place since. The “cooptative mechanism” Selznick identified, whereby power or the burdens of power are shared and co-evolve, showed the relevance of political relations in the legitimacy that organizations—particularly public ones—strive for in order to operate.

Philip Selznick's classic 1949 book, TVA and the Grass Roots: A Study in the Sociology of Formal Organization contributed to his theory of organization. The TVA -- the Tennessee Valley Authority -- was formed to foster recovery from the Great Depression. But its very existence was controversial as it sat uncomfortably between public and private sectors, and between the federal and state levels of government. What were the challenges the TVA faced and how did this story contribute to Selznick’s theory?
