Author, "Talking Elvis" co-host and past TCBCast guest Vince Wright returns to the show to discuss his latest effort, "8MM Elvis," with Gurdip. "8MM Elvis" is a book cataloguing and documenting the long-forgotten and neglected history of home 8MM releases of Elvis footage in the pre-VHS era. After catching up on what Vince has been up to in the last couple years since his previous TCBCast appearance, Gurdip follows Vince through his history as a longtime collector and enthusiast of this ephemeral viewing format of days gone by. From rare, trimmed-down edits of Elvis's feature films to bootleg copies of 68 Comeback Special outtakes, it's a fascinating discussion - plus, Gurdip challenges Vince to a bit of Elvis trivia! Then, you get to hear a sampling of "Songs of the Month" from our Patreon-exclusive spinoff TCBCast Now, as Gurdip and David "Ghosty" Wills of "We Say Yeah: A Cliff Richard Fan Podcast" cover the histories behind two songs from Elvis' peers: Jackie Wilson's 1958 recording "Right Now" and Sir Cliff's 1962 take on Jerry Lee Lewis' "It'll Be Me," respectively. Hello shoes, I'm sorry but I'm going to have to stand on you again...Unique episode as we enter the world of comedic pop with the wonderful neil (always lower case) and his epic 80s cover of the Traffic classic, Hole In My Shoe.neil's alter ego, the great Nigel Planer explains all things neil from initial character through to making of the Young Ones and the spin off single/LP (Lentil Nightmare has to be heard to be believed). And of course, reference to neil's masterpiece. It's a 2-for-1 in the Anatomy of a Song dept, as we also get to discuss the massive no. 1 charity single, Livin' Doll, which The Young Ones recorded with Sir Cliff of Richard ("Can I go now?")A wonderful interview (and the most fun I've had getting clips together for...)Contact Nigel;website: nigelplaner.co.uktwitter @NigelPlaner1Contact/support 80sography;email/PayPal contributions: 80sography@gmail.comtwitter/instagram @80sography Vegetable rights and peace!
On recent podcasts, you've heard Jonesy going on about the long-lost show with Sir Cliff Richard. Due to your urging, we have dug through the vaults and it has been found! From the Jonesy's Jukebox archive, we present to you another of the Queen's Knights. Steve Jones and Sir Cliff perform a few of his most famous hit songs, with help on guitar by esteemed actor Naveen Andrews (Lost, The Dropout). Jonesy has called this one of his favorite Jukebox shows ever. Enjoy.
First off...happy new year....I thought I might have to call you "Sir" Vince but I noticed you never made the Queen's honours list.....so you can't join Knights of the Realm like Sir Cliff...Sir Ringo...Sir Van Morrison....or Sir Tony Blair and even more hard to believe Sir Ashley Banjo ....maybe next year....I would suggest you latch on to an act which will definitely end up being knighted.....Ant,Dec and Vince? ....For the "one of the worst records ever made" spot this week I have nominated the destruction of the song "My Way" by The Sex Pistols......it is over 4 minutes long so I suggest fading it out after one minute if you can stand it for that song.

Paul chats with Collabro ahead of their new single with Sir Cliff Richard Mistletoe and WineSingle Release Date – 26th November 2021 “I'm finding it hard to believe that it has been 33 years since I first released Mistletoe and Wine. I am really thrilled with this newly recorded version with the Collabro boys. I love their harmonies and it was a pleasure to sing with them, and if this new version gets everyone into the Christmas Spirit we will be very happy!!” – Sir Cliff Richard Following a hugely successful tour as special guests to Sir Cliff Richard in 2017, Collabro and Sir Cliff have become close friends in the industry and have supported each other, including Sir Cliff joining an intimate gig where Collabro performed at Pizza Express Holborn and Collabro performing at the Royal Albert Hall to celebrate Sir Cliffs 60 years in the music business. Whilst Collabro were recording their Christmas album “Christmas Is Here” and Cliff was recording his “Music… The Air That I Breathe” album, they came up with the idea to re-record the festive Christmas classic “Mistletoe and Wine”, 33 years after its original release. The Collabro boys couldn't be more thankful for this opportunity and are endlessly grateful to Sir Cliff for his continued support. “It really is a dream come true and probably the most surreal thing we have ever done. This song was first released before any of us were born so we have literally heard it every Christmas our whole lives. Working with Sir Cliff has always been the most incredible experience and we really hope people enjoy this new version of the song.” Michael Auger Collabro Collabro are the World's Most Successful Musical Theatre Group. The boys met for their first rehearsal above a pub in London Bridge back in 2014. Soon after, they auditioned for ITV's Britain's Got Talent, and a month later received a full standing ovation from all four judges and the full audience at the Hammersmith Apollo. They went on to win the competition with one of the highest voting majorities of any series, and their debut album Stars went straight into the UK album charts at number one, was quickly certified gold, and became the fasting selling album of 2014. To this day, they are one of the most popular Got Talent winners ever. Last year, Collabro released their album “Christmas Is Here” comprising of a range of festive classics and an original track, the titular 'Christmas Is Here', which saw them team up once again with Ben Adams from A1. After going from strength to strength with six top-selling albums, four sell-out UK tours, two US tours, headline slots at the London Palladium, Wembley Stadium, the O2 arena and the Royal Albert Hall, this summer saw COLLABRO performing at Tatton Park Pop Up Festival, In The Park with Katherine Jenkins, Sound On The Ground Blackpool, and performing with Alfie Boe at Trentham Live and are currently on their major headline Greatest Hits Tour. Sir Cliff Richard makes a second trip to the island he first visited 60 years ago, when he had just turned 20, but had already topped the UK charts three times. Over the course of his career, Sir Cliff has released over 100 albums and sold well over 250 million records. His chart success in the UK has been eclipsed only by his hero Elvis Presley and one-time rivals, the Beatles. Born Harry Webb in Lucknow, India, Sir Cliff returned to the UK with his family in 1948: money was tight and the family of six shared a room until they were able to move into a council house. Sir Cliff’s father bought him a guitar for his 16th birthday and he initially performed in a skiffle band until he discovered rock ‘n’ roll and started a new band called the Drifters which later became the Shadows. His first hit single came in 1958 with Move It – often credited as being the first authentic British rock ‘n’ roll track – and he dominated the home-grown music scene of the late 1950s and early 1960s. During his long career Sir Cliff performed on screen in films including Summer Holiday and The Young Ones. He has fronted television shows, twice performed Britain’s entry in the Eurovision Song Contest and starred in two stage musicals. Today, at 80, he is still recording new songs and itching to get back on tour to perform his music in a post-Covid world. Sir Cliff's return to Desert Island Discs after 60 years is record-breaking: it's the longest time between appearances in the programme's eight decade history. Roger Bolton hears listener views on the Sir Cliff Richard verdict and finds out about the new wave of World Service podcasts. BBC News executive James Stephenson discusses the corporation's Brexit coverage and Chris Mason talks about accents in politics. This week, a legal ruling awarded Sir Cliff Richard £210,000 in damages against the BBC with the judge saying some of the news coverage of a police raid on Sir Cliff's home infringed his privacy rights in a "serious" and "somewhat sensationalist" way. Citing concerns with the precedent set down in the case, the BBC has stated that it is considering an appeal. We hear listeners' views. Brexit has been a constant feature in the Feedback inbox and, this week, listeners have been asking why the BBC hasn't put more resources into investigating what they see as Brexit "scandals". Roger puts those concerns to the BBC's News Editor, James Stephenson. Death in Ice Valley, an investigative podcast that looked into the death of an unidentified woman in Norway in 1970, has been downloaded and streamed more than 2.7 million times. It's the BBC's most successful new podcast launch. BBC World Service Podcast Editor Jon Manel, who commissioned the series, joins Feedback to discuss how his network is looking to reach new audiences. And a recent Radio 4 documentary looked at accents and politics, asking Could the PM Have a Brummie Accent? It caught the imagination of many Feedback listeners. Chris Mason, BBC Political correspondent and Yorkshireman, talks about why he took on the topic. Producer: Will Yates A Whistledown production for BBC Radio 4.

Sixty years in showbiz for Marty Wilde this year. The south London boy was signed by the famously unsentimental pop Svengali Larry Parnes, and rose to fame with the generation that included Sir Cliff and Billy Fury. He co-wrote Kids in America for his daughter, 80s pop star Kim Wilde, and has just produced his granddaughter's cover of the Lulu hit 'I'm a Tiger'. If that were not enough, this autumn he's off tour, the Solid Gold Rock'n'Roll Tour Lara Jewitt's office is pretty unusual - the Tropical Nursery and the Alpine Nursery at Kew Gardens - where the world's rarest plant life begins. She has travelled widely around South America in search of rare plants and most recently won Gold with her team at this year's Chelsea Flower Show. Sweetpea Slight grew up I suppose unconventionally in Dorset, the daughter of artists, but it was theatre for which she was destined. Event intervened, when just before she went to audition for drama school she got rather annexed by the theatre producer Thelma Holt, as famous for her eccentricity as for her nouse. She spent the next twenty years as Thelma Holt's assistant before finally making her move upstage. She's written a very fine book about it with the very fine title, 'Get Me The Urgent Biscuits'. There's not much Roger McGough doesn't know about poetry. He was one of three poets who contributed to the anthology The Mersey Sound back in 1967. He's president of The Poetry Society and has published more than 50 anthologies. This year is also the 50th anniversary of his love poem Summer With Monika. Inheritance Tracks this week come from Robert Webb - his new book is a sort of literary memoir of his journey from Boyz2Men - but lately has been best known as the hopeless Jeremy in Peep Show; and his West End Bertie Wooster was the talk of the Drones. He's returning, firmly packaged with David Mitchell, in a new series for Channel Four called Back. One of the most senior women in media gives her first interview. The BBC's new Deputy Director General Anne Bulford talks Top Gear, top executives' pay and how the broadcaster plans to make hundreds of millions of pounds in savings. Sir Cliff Richard says he will sue the BBC and South Yorkshire Police over TV coverage of the raid on his home in 2014 in connection with historical sex abuse allegations. After 22 months without being arrested or charged, Sir Cliff was told that the case had been dismissed. He says the behaviour of the police and BBC at the time his home was raided was unfair and caused him distress and financial loss. The House of Commons Home Affairs Select Committee criticised the police, but said the BBC did nothing wrong. However, should the law be changed to protect the anonymity of people who fall under suspicion but are never arrested or charged? Or should the media be free to report on police action against public figures, even if they emerge as completely innocent at the end of the process? We hear contrasting views from two legal experts. Also - Since the success of the Serial podcast in the United States, UK broadcasters have been looking for a successful true crime formula here. This Thursday on ITV, award-winning investigator and former police detective Mark Williams-Thomas tackles a cold case in "The Investigator: A British Crime Story". It uses dramatic reconstruction to delve into a story of murder and disappearance. We hear from Mark Williams-Thomas and also the executive producer of the BAFTA-winning Channel Four series "The Murder Detectives", Neil Grant, on how they choose their cases and the production and ethical challenges involved when real tragedy becomes TV entertainment.
Rona Fairhead, the former FT Group chief executive, has been announced as the Government's preferred choice as BBC Trust chair. Her nomination comes at a challenging time for the BBC, in the run up to Charter renewal and concerns over governance. Steve hears from John Gapper, former colleague, and Associate Editor of the Financial Times, about what she could bring to the role; former Culture Secretary, Tessa Jowell MP, who introduced the BBC Trust as a system of governance, and Phil Harding, former BBC news editor and Controller of Editorial Policy, about what her appointment may mean for the Trust, and the BBC.The BBC and South Yorkshire Police appeared before MPs yesterday, regarding the search of Sir Cliff Richard's home in Berkshire. The police and the BBC cooperated with each other, which ended in the BBC having cameras and a helicopter at the singer's home when the police turned up to raid it. Hundreds of people complained about the footage. However, Chairman of the Commons Home Affairs Committee, Keith Vaz said the BBC had behaved, 'perfectly properly'. Steve Hewlett is joined by the BBC's head of newsgathering, Jonathan Munro, to discuss the operational decisions the organisation made. The Independent Press Standards Organisation (IPSO) will replace the Press Complaints Commission next week. The majority of the UK's national press has elected to be subject to its regulation. The Press Gazette is the latest to sign up, and it's understood that a decision will be made by the Guardian shortly. However, there's still concern that ISPO is not independent enough. Executive Director of Hacked Off Joan Smith, Press Gazette editor Dominic Ponsford, and former Guardian editor and Observer columnist Peter Preston, join Steve.Producer: Katy Takatsuki.
The BBC has come under criticism for the way it covered a police raid on Sir Cliff Richard's home. BBC News decided to film and broadcast a search of the singer's home last week, using a helicopter flying over his home in Berkshire. Since then, the organisation has been accused of breaking editorial guidelines, and will now face questions by the Home Affairs Select Committee. Steve Hewlett talks to Professor Stewart Purvis, former Editor-in-Chief of ITN, about the decision making taken in newsrooms, and crime correspondent for the Times, Fiona Hamilton, about the relationship between crime reporters and the police, especially in a post-Leveson age.Sky TV has announced plans to improve the representation of black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) people across its entertainment channels, including Sky1 and drama-focused Sky Atlantic. It's pledged that by the end of 2015, all new shows on Sky entertainment channels will have people from BAME backgrounds in at least 20% of significant on-screen roles, while all original programming will have someone with a BAME background in at least one senior production role. Steve talks to Stuart Murphy, Sky's director of entertainment, about how they'll go about sourcing the talent, and to Simone Pennant who is the founder of the TV Collective, a membership organisation which works to improve diversity on and off screen.A press freedom group says journalists attempting to report on the protests in Ferguson in Missouri are being restricted by police. We speak to Gregg Leslie from The Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press in the US, and Channel 4 reporter Kylie Morris, on her experience of having an officer pointing a gun at her whilst reporting from the protests. Big hoo hah about the intention of Wetherspoons opening up a place on the motorway….”It will encourage drivers to drink”….”Those struggling to abstain will be tempted”….…the reason for the complaints is probably because Wetherspoons do cheap good value food and cheap COFFEE … unlike the present rip off service stations….and maybe PASSENGERS would like a pint…I’m a big fan of the ‘Spoons .. go get ‘em guys. Two more items of scary news this week….full out announcement - “shower gel could have a bad effect on pregnant women’s babies…and they must avoid eating food which has been plastic wrapped”…this is from the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynacologists (imagine working there and having to say that every time someone asks you where you work)….but they later added that this is only an assumption…so let’s scare everyone first!!........ALSO there are KILLER jelly fish in the Med….purple ones !!....a jellyfish is like a nettle…they don’t chase you and in virtually every case you rub a bit of ammonia on the sting…end of….BUT NO everyone get your harpoons ordered….it’s hell out there !!! There are new motoring laws coming in soon….it’s an on the spot fine of £60 for tailgating…and for hogging the middle lane on the motorway…I’m all for this but I don’t know how they are going to enforce this…also use of mobile phones while driving fines go up from £60 to £100…and driving without insurance from £200 to £300…..personally I think anyone driving without insurance should get a life ban….all good stuff but it wont make a blind bit of difference…you’ll still see the loonies out there. There was a discussion on the tele about lack of quality time served entertainers on TV….people who are professional…all we get are amateur talent shows (which do my head in)…but I think the whole business is struggling because “stars” were charging too much….a pal of mine Paul Williams… ran a club in Birkenhead and back in the early 80’ people like Anita Harris were allegedly charging 3 grand……not worth it…but it crippled the game. NOW talking of major celebs…your mate Cliff has been on tele pushing his latest tour….I must say he looks very well…..now don’t get me wrong…I LIKE Cliff but he is always on a high telling us that his latest tour has had rave reviews and that he has sold x million records etc etc….we KNOW…we were THERE Cliff…….just give us Livin’ Doll and we’ll all be happy.

Shock World Service 044 Electronic Snowflakes by Jon Averill 25/12/11 Dublin, Ireland 1. Bjork - Overture It became clear to me early on that a lot of the music I had earmarked for this podcast had only the most tenuous connection to the theme. 2. New David - Radioland One thing I've learned about covers of Kraftwerk tracks over the years is they're mostly crap. Not this. 3. Kenneth Patchen - So Be It A wonderfully forbidding work by Kenneth Patchen. His own reading only serves to enhance its sense of authority. 4. Keith Fullerton Whitman - Generator 3; Keith follows his obsession with "the tenets of Process music & Systems music" 5. Vince Guaraldi Trio - Christmastime Is Here (Alternative Version) The first track which could be called an outright ‘Christmas song' is from Vince Guaraldi. Vince composed & preformed the music to the Peanuts/Charlie Brown cartoons from which this is taken. It provides a suitable nod to the season without Slade or Sir Cliff in sight. 6. µ-Ziq - Hasty Boom Alert Swiftly back to the ‘tracks that remind of Christmas but have no connection whatsoever' box. ‘Hasty Boom Alert' is first rate melodic clatter and bash from µ-Ziq. Taken from his album ‘Lunatic Harness' which I may or may not own. 7. Speedy J - Hayfever Speedy J was behind some stunning techno releases in the mid 90's before stepping back somewhat to make quieter music. 8. Moscow New Choir - Pushkin's Garland Nothing evokes the holiday spirit more than a choir from a cold country, nothing. 9. The Hacker - Electronic Snowflakes I've never been a big fan of The Hacker. This is ok. 10. Max de Wardener - Snowflakes An accompaniment piece to the previous track. Complementing The Hacker's electronic gurglings with more traditional instrumentation. 11. The Cure - Primary Before things get too peaceful and you drift off here are The Cure in their visceral prime. 12. Visage - Whispers From a distance Visage always seemed like something of a novelty act. ‘Fade To Grey' has had all its power and mystic drained away from inclusion on multiple drive-time 80's collections but if you dig deeper they have a handful of really innovative pioneering tracks. 13. Creative Control - Me & My Drums Creative Control rework ‘Little Drummer Boy' 14. Lord Buckley - People Another whimsical rant from the one true lord, Lord Buckley, an indomitable exponent of the importance of people over deities. 15. Tom Waits - Clap Hands I won't lie, I don't know why Tom Waits whiskey & sandpaper voice reminds of Christmas but it does. Cian Ó Cíobháin used a Tom Waits track on his Christmas podcast also so there must be something in this? 16. The Andrew Oldham Orchestra - Play With Fire The Andrew Oldham Orchestra are most famous these days as the act whom The Verve sampled for the string refrain on ‘Bitter Sweet Symphony. 17. Wendy Rané - After Laughter Some may recognise this as the backbone to Wu Tang Clan's ‘Tearz'. 18. The Kingston Trio - Last Month Of The Year Are we the only ones or does the intro remind you of Jape's ‘Floating'? This is 60's folk vintage from the ever so clean-cut Kingston Trio. 19. Soft Cell - Say Hello, Wave Goodbye (12” Mix) Increasingly this time of year is about people returning, myself included from their various outposts around the world before departing just as rapidly. 20. John Baker - Christmas Commercial This short concluding motif comes from John Baker, a key member of The BBC Radiophonic Workshop who produced some stunning and still highly sought after electronic music in the 60's & 70's.
