Another comedian compilation as we hear from stand-ups Jo Caulfield and Richard Herring and comedic actor, audiobook narrator and Neil from The Young Ones, Nigel Planer. Plus we find some brand new books in the RNIB Library
Terence Blacker, the editor of 'Bachelor Boys: The Young Ones Book' and co-author of 'Neil's Book of the Dead' shares the story of how those books were created, plus his own experiences as an author and latterly a singer-songwriter! Here's a link to Terence on X (Twitter) and a link to his website. It's a good old natter about how it was working with Nigel Planer and writing in Neil's voice, plus getting reams of wild stuff from a prolific Ben Elton (and advice on how to handle it from Rik and Lise). Oh, and have a link to Terence's YouTube channel!
This is an extraordinary story on many levels – about the power and sanctuary of music, about what it took for bands to get noticed in the ‘70s, about how a teenager obsessed with King Crimson eventually joined the band and about the struggles of “a rabid Henry Cow fan trying to get on Top of the Pops”. Jakko Jakszyk is a fabulous storyteller, both in his memoir ‘Who's the Boy With The Lovely Hair?' and on this podcast with the two of us. Among the highlights … … two things musicians need to know. … why the divisive appeal of music and comedy is so similar. … life in a band where “Stravinsky meets the Barron Knights”. … “Who'll be the singing Jack Russell?” Doing voice-overs as a piece of toast and a baked potato with a Yorkshire accent. ... the quaint Englishness of Soft Machine, Caravan and King Crimson and why they were like “a holiday resort no-one knew about”. … why there are even more idiots in advertising than the music business. … the rigours of the Melody Maker Folk Rock Contest, aged 17, judged by Tommy Vance, Bob Harris and Brian May of Queen. … the militant wing of the Adrian Belew Fan Club. … Dave Robinson's sage advice after telling him he was “unfashionably heterosexual”. ... why Robert Fripp is more Miles Davis than Frank Zappa and the longest audition in history. …the complications of the King Crimson reunion caused by one person who shall remain nameless – “though let's call him Greg Lake”. … “two screaming lead guitars and a trumpet, what could possibly go wrong?” … and working with Pete Sinfield, Peter Hawkins, Sam Brown and Nigel Planer. #475 The Mike That Never Was - Richard is back in the witch-burning city of Exeter and this time his guest is Comic Strip Presents legend Peter Richardson. They talk about how Peter meet Nigel Planer and invented the character of Neil, the early days of the Comic Strip in Raymonds Revue Bar, why it was a good thing that he didn't end up playing Mike in the Young Ones (though he might well be wrong about that), how he shocked Steve Martin, getting bottles of piss thrown at him by Heavy Metal fans at Donnington, his instrumental part in Stella Street and why the Comic Strip Presents about Boris Johnson never saw the light of day. Plus the lackadaisical attitudes to Health and Safety that saw him confronted by the police outside Buckingham Palace. An incredible delve into an amazing time for comedy! David Pickard discusses with Ivan six things which should be better known. David Pickard studied Music at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, before starting his career as Company Manager of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. Following this, David worked at the Open Air Theatre in Regent's Park and was the Assistant Director for the Japan Festival (1991) before becoming Sir John Drummond's deputy at the European Arts Festival. In 1993 he was appointed Chief Executive of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment where he significantly increased the orchestra's artistic reputation and international profile, helping to establish the OAE as the pre-eminent period-instrument orchestra in the world. In 2001 he was made General Director of Glyndebourne Festival where during his tenure he created an extensive digital programme including online streaming, big-screen and cinema relays and broadened the company's audience base through specially priced performances for young people and a pioneering education programme. In November 2015, David took up the role of Director of the BBC Proms. Since then he has introduced a number of initiatives, all in support of the Proms' central mission: to bring ‘the best of classical music to the widest possible audience.' These have included an innovative series called ‘Proms at…' exploring music in new spaces, both in London and around the UK. He has introduced greater diversity among the composers, conductors and soloists showcased by the Proms - both in gender and ethnicity - and has also made youth music-making and youth audiences a major focus. He has expanded the range of genres explored in the festival to include gaming music, contemporary jazz, world music and, in 2018, a twenty minute animated light show projected onto the external and internal façades of the Royal Albert Hall, accompanied by a new work for orchestra and chorus by Anna Meredith. At the risk of slightly offend the smorgasbord of incredible talent who I've been lucky enough to interview in my years doing BTT, there's nothing I like better than unpicking and analysing comedy with a giant of the craft and here Nigel Planer allowed me to do just that:

Everybody knows Cyndi Lauper's big hit, “Girls Just want to have Fun”, but not so well-known is her career since then - a star-turn on “We are the World”, a string of great albums including Billboard's Blues Album of the Year, and writing “Kinky Boots”, a hit Broadway musical, all contribute to her story. Our album "To Listen To Before You Die" this week – Leonard Cohen's “Songs of Love and Hate” - is chock-full of understated songs and amazing turns of phrase. Show regulars will know that Mick loves it, and Jeff not so much. Tune in to find out why. Jeff takes a look at Extreme Ironing as an up-and-coming sport, and the boys look at how one of Elon Musk's batteries could boost tourism to Central Australia by allowing a pizza shop and ice-creamery to open in the country's most remote parts. Gareth continues his look at what The Young Ones did after The Young Ones with Roll Over Beethoven. A Liza Goddard vehicle that in retrospect feels like Nigel Planer should have been the bigger name, Roll Over Beethoven ran for two (rushed) series in 1985. Written by the esteemed Marks and Gran, it has no laugh track and not that many laughs and it falls apart half way through. But is it worth a re-evaluation?
An interview with David Lloyd, who appeared in Filthy Rich & Catflap as Rocky from the gay pub. He's also had memorable turns in The Young Ones and Bottom, enjoying being on screen alongside Rik Mayall, Nigel Planer and Adrian Edmondson. David's prime TV role was in Maid Marian and her Merry Men, starring alongside Tony Robinson and Kate Lonergan. His career transitioned from acting to writing (for Eastenders, Doctors and other shows) which allowed him to care for his wife and spend time with his family. Many thanks to Dave for chatting with us at Podcasto Catflappo!
A bonus episode talking about Filthy Rich & Catflap's debut on Australian TV, how it fits into the Catflap timeline and what it was like experiencing it as a 13 year old kid. We dive into ABC's repeats of The Young Ones leading up to Catflap's first ep being broadcast on 30th April 1987 and how it was followed by The Comic Strip Presents. We also look at what our heroes Nigel Planer, Ade Edmonson and Rik Mayall were up to in 1987!

“When you've got a relationship with a writer who just gets what you're up to… You just have the feeling that I can be really funny in this.” NIGEL PLANER is an actor, singer, songwriter, and author - amongst many other attributes - and is forever associated with his role as Neil in the 1980s cult comedy series The Young Ones. Today we are talking about Nigel's latest book, Jeremiah Bourne In Time as he takes me on a backstreet alley tour of London between Waterloo Station and London Bridge, through pungent smells of skunk and wee, to reach those discreet parks, gardens and spaces that are very much a part of a Londoner's London, and form the backdrop to Jeremiah Bourne's time travel adventures. Nigel reflects on a London cafe where “The service would be glum and the tea would be real.” Nigel admits to getting obsessed with the idea that “we inherit memory - rather like birds fly south, how can they know how to? “ And, influenced by Rupert Sheldrake's ideas on morphic resonance (for which Sheldrake is criticised by many leading scientists as being a pseudoscience notion), Nigel has enthusiastically and imaginatively embraced the concept that you could inherit memory to travel in time, and his protagonist, a young 17-year old Jeremiah, travels between 1910 London, the present (2019), and an imagined future after, not one, but two digital meltdowns, while in search of his mother using memory as his mode of time travel. On our walk and talk, Nigel is observing London's history from a refreshing angle, while discussing the symbolism of Dr John Dee's black glass; the contradictory ideas of the New Age academics of 1910 from socialism to eugenics, nudism to necromancy, a present time of mobile phones, apps and step-family, and a future time post digital meltdown of vitrification and steam punk. “It's not your normal stand on a plinth and look grand, statue.” (Talking about John Keats's statue at Guy's Hospital) On a personal level, Nigel reveals why he loves playing “the baddie”, and what happened when he bunked off to India at 18 years old without a word to his parents and was “sick as a dog”. “It's not the easiest place to visit but it's absolutely thrilling.” To find out more about Nigel Planer check out his… Website: https://nigelplaner.co.uk/ GET INVOLVED in The Time Shard Chronicles and make a PLEDGE at: https://unbound.com/books/jeremiah-bourne-in-time/ Twitter: @NigelPlaner1 Instagram: @nigelplaner1 Facebook: @nigelplanerofficial Dramatised audio version of Jeremiah Bourne in Time can be found on Amazon Audible OR at Big Finish Productions: https://www.bigfinish.com/releases/v/jeremiah-bourne-in-time-1769 LISTEN to Nigel's spoken extracts from the book on Twitter, Instagram, OR at https://unbound.com/ To find out about your podcast host EMMA you can go to https://www.travellingthrough.co.uk/ A big thanks to MARISKA Martina at https://www.mariskamartina.com/ for creating our wonderful podcast jingle!

Comedy and acting legend Nigel Planer has enjoyed an illustrious career over four decades. Enjoying No. 1 and No. 2 chart hits, in character as Neil from The Young Ones, Planer is no stranger to the music business. He's teamed up with songwriter Neil Avery to record an album of new songs, which the pair discuss here. Planer also talks about his music career, including dodging bottles of urine at The Monsters of Rock Festival and messing about outside the gents' toilets with Status Quo at the Band Aid recordings.
Nigel Planer is an actor, comedian, novelist and playwright who is best known for playing Neil in The Young Ones and Ralph Filthy in Filthy Rich & Catflap with Rick Mayall and Adrian Edmondson. By the time this chat is over you'll know what i mean... Welcome to Eyes & Teeth Derek Martin
Looks Unfamiliar is a podcast in which writer and occasional broadcaster Tim Worthington talks to a guest about some of the things that they remember that nobody else ever seems to. Joining Tim this time is director Matt Lee, who's rifling through lines of code in search of ITV comedy pilot Wake Up! With Libby And Jonathan, Cheers-prefiguring sitcom Park St. Under, ideologically dubious computer game Terramex, They Might Be Giants' 'Dial-A-Song' service, Cola Spread and an attempted regional ban on Garbage Pail Kids. Along the way we'll be critically evaluating Leslie Grantham's 'shocked' face, revealing how not to wow the opposite sex by listening to the b-side of Birdhouse In Your Soul, and recalling some favourite quotations from Beer: A Book by George Wendt. Ahead of this week’s #One2ThreeShow I talked to actor, comedian, playwright and all-round national treasure Nigel Planer. Nigel, of course, is most famous for his role as everybody’s favourite long-haired hippy, Neil, from The Young Ones, has been in countless TV and West End stage productions and narrated several audiobooks. We talk about some of his favourite West End roles, what it was like taking comedy to a new level in the 80s, his latest project “Raymond’s Room”, theatre in the time of Covid19, his upcoming album “five songs left” and his new play “All Above Board”. Plus was Rik Mayall really a bastard?
Ahead of this week’s #One2ThreeShow I talked to writer, musician and director Chris Wade. As a musician, Chris Wade’s band Dodson and Fogg has an impressive back catalogue and has featured the likes of Nigel Planer and Toya Wilcox, he’s written and directed documentaries and films and has written several audiobooks with Wisdom Twins Books. His previous release “Cutey and the Sofaguard” narrated by Rik Mayall, gained a large cult following and his latest release “Raymonds Room” narrated by Nigel Planer is written in similar vein; funny, energetic, relatable yet imaginative and is guaranteed to connect with and cheer up your inner loser! We talk about Chris’ music, his audiobooks, some invaluable tips for creators and his surreal experiences working with comedy heroes Nigel and Rik. Plus how does Mark Searby measure on the Bastard scale?

#teatre #cinema @OnaCultural @Radioonadesants 94.6 FM #cultura #somcultura #femcultura
