A man who can only be described as musical theatre royalty, Michael Ball made his West End debut in 1985 as Marius in the original cast of Les Misérables. He went on to play the lead role of Alex Dillingham in Andrew Lloyd Webber's Aspects of Love in both the West End and on Broadway. He's appeared in a long string of musicals covering all parts of the repertoire – The Phantom of the Opera, Sweeney Todd, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Chess, Sunset Boulevard, even going full drag for Hairspray. He's recorded 27 albums, including 6 number 1s, not including the 12 cast recordings he's a part of. He's twice won the Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Musical, and in 2015 was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire for his services to musical theatre. In this lively and heartfelt interview, Michael reflects on his illustrious career, from his breakout role as Marius to his current portrayal of Javert in the Australian arena tour. He shares behind-the-scenes stories about the show's early development, the camaraderie among its global cast, and how the evolving production has stayed relevant over four decades. Michael opens up about personal challenges, including a battle with stage-related anxiety early in his career, and how he overcame it with support from Cameron Mackintosh and others. We also hear about his success as a solo artist, his collaborations with Alfie Boe, and his ventures into songwriting. With warmth and humour, he discusses some of his memorable roles, his thoughts on fame and creative control, and the deep satisfaction he finds in all aspects of his work.

This week we welcome the singers Michael Ball and Alfie Boe. Ball and Boe have been singing together for ten years, and are about to release their sixth album, but in this conversation Gyles takes them right back to the beginning. We hear about Alfie's childhood, growing up as the youngest in a family of nine in a council house in the north-west, about how he was discovered as he sang to himself at work as a mechanic, about his first girlfriend and the death of his father. Michael tells Gyles about his unhappy school days, his wild years at drama school in Guildford and the amazing first night of Les Mis at The Barbican. This is a warm, funny and sometimes touching conversation with two great musicians. 'Together at Home', Michael and Alfie's new album, is out now. He also explains how an audition with an Indie band at the age 14 almost changed his career path for good... We chat about what he expects from the drummer in his own band and how he encourages them to really push their boundaries and not to pay too much attention to the charts provided. This was a really fascinating conversation, Alfie is genuinely one of the nicest guys you could wish to meet, and i appreciate him giving up his very precious time to chat to me. Many thanks also to Joel Barford, Joel is a former guest on the Podcast and he asked Alfie on my behalf to do this, thanks Joel! Lastly thanks to Lewis Shaw from LME worldwide for making all of the neccesary arrangements. www.alfie-boe.com

RFM certified all six of the cruise line's ships that sail to Alaska following an independent audit.RFM is a third-party certification program for wild-capture fisheries and is aligned with the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries, the most comprehensive set of international standards and best practices for wild fisheries. The RFM ecolabel includes the seafood product's origin and tells consumers where their food comes from every step of the way — starting with the Alaska fishers and processors and continuing to the cruise line's receipt of product and to the guest's plate.Usage of the RFM logo signifies solid commitment to a distinctive Chain of Custody program that assures buyers and guests their seafood is legally harvested, obtained from responsibly managed certified sustainable fisheries, and can be traced back to its origin.Serving Alaska seafood on Holland America Line ships has long been part of the brand's immersive culinary experiences. On any Alaska cruise, the line serves more than 2,000 pounds of Alaska Salmon, 1,000 pounds of Alaska cod, 800 pounds of Alaska halibut, 500 pounds of Alaska rockfish and more.Holland America Line Reports Positive Results of Cruise Industry's First Long-Term Biofuel Test on Board Volendam at Port of RotterdamHolland America Line completed the cruise industry's first multiweek test of biofuels on board Volendam at Port of Rotterdam in the Netherlands. The 20-day test was conducted in partnership with GoodFuels, a leading producer and supplier of sustainable biofuels for the transportation industry, and Wärtsilä, a global leader in power and propulsion technologies and lifecycle solutions for the marine market. The assessment was completed September 7. In the first five days of the test the ship used a mix of 30% biofuel and 70% marine gas oil (MGO) in one of its main auxiliary engines. For the final 15 days of testing, the ship used 100% biofuel. According to GoodFuels, there was a 78% decrease in lifecycle CO2 emissions during the final 15 days of trial compared to marine gas oil emissions.Dutch-flagged Volendam was selected for the test since it was located at the Port of Rotterdam, one of the global ports where GoodFuels operates the infrastructure necessary to provide biofuel waterside fueling services. There is no significant difference for the ship's team members in handling regular fuel oil versus biofuel. The use of a “drop-in” biofuel such as the one tested on Volendam requires no shipboard refitting or special equipment. What Are Biofuels? The advanced biofuel is derived from feedstocks that are certified as 100% waste or residue, with no land-use issues and no competition with food production or deforestation.Holland America Line's 2024 Grand Australia and New Zealand Voyage Returns After a DecadeHolland America Line is continuing to bolster its longer voyages departing from a North America homeport, and the 2024 Grand Australia and New Zealand Voyage is the newest addition. Kansas is the first state in the US to decide in a referendum to protect abortion rights in a major victory for pro-choice groups. What impact could this have across the rest of America after the overturning of Roe vs Wade? Professor Fiona De Londras, Chair of Global Legal Studies at Birmingham Law School updates us. The Lionesses win is still being celebrated, with thousands gathering in Trafalgar Square on Monday to celebrate. The women's game, however, has a history of being dramatically underfunded compared to the men's and currently 37% of schools don't offer girls' football in PE. To change this, the government has announced a £230 million investment into improving grassroots football… but will it work? Former English international footballer Rachel Yankey and Francesca Brown, the founder and chief executive of Goals4Girls discuss their hopes for women's football and the lasting legacy of the Euro win. We're looking at dance music on the programme today. A new report has found that just 5% of dance music in the UK charts has a female as the lead artist. The report also looks at gender equality issues at festivals, and how ‘The Male Gaze' places pressure on women in the industry. The Radio 1 DJ Jaguar joins Jessica, alongside Nicola Davies, the report's lead author. Sam Smith was the first, and youngest woman to ever to run a stockbroking company in the UK, and she often found herself the only woman in a room or trading floor. She's one of just nine female CEOs of companies in the FTSE 100 index, and has decided to step down from her role at the firm she founded FinnCap Group PLC. So what are her reflections on how things have changed for women in the 24 years since she joined the world of finance? Last year she turned 50 - at the same time her daughter left home for university. Thrown by how much it affected her, Juliette Pochin, a record producer working with artists ranging from Alfie Boe through to Harry Styles and the London Symphony Orchestra, has come out from behind the studio and written a cabaret show Music, Mayhem and a Mezzo. She is making her debut at the Edinburgh Fringe from the 5th to the 13th August. The Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square are featured in this merry episode about Christmas in our own backyard. We are local to Salt Lake City and enjoy a wide variety of Christmas culture. This includes the magnificent downtown venue of Temple Square, home to the Salt Lake Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Temple Square is famously decorated for Christmas and features one of the largest Christmas light displays in the world. It also has stunning Nativity displays and art. The several buildings house crowds of all sizes to accommodate performances from local artists and groups. The most famous of these groups is the Tabernacle Choir, who has called Temple Square home since the 1860s. They first performed in the still-standing Tabernacle, for which the Choir is named. In their history of touring and regular concerts no other activity by the Choir is as well known as their annual Christmas concert, which is featured on PBS in a nationally aired broadcast every holiday season. The Christmas concerts by the Tabernacle Choir feature the Orchestra at Temple Square, a hand bell choir, dancers and actors from local companies. Nearly all local performers are volunteers. It is a Choir custom to invite renown guest artists to perform each year. Past performers include Broadway stars Audra McDonald, Kristin Chenoweth, Angela Lansbury, Kelli O'Hara, Santino Fontana and Laura Osnes; R&B singer Gladys Knight; the late jazz singer Natalie Cole; pop singer David Archuleta; legendary newscasters Walter Cronkite and Tom Brokaw; historian David McCullough; the Muppets from “Sesame Street”; actors Jane Seymour, Hugh Bonneville, Richard Thomas, the late Ed Herrmann, John Rhys-Davies, Roma Downey, the late Peter Graves, Claire Bloom, Michael York and Martin Jarvis; opera stars Renée Fleming, Deborah Voigt, Frederica von Stade, Bryn Terfel, Nathan Gunn, Alfie Boe, Sissel, Rolando Villazón and four Metropolitan Opera soloists and the London-based a cappella group, The King's Singers. Collectively, the featured guests have garnered 34 Grammy Awards, 19 Tony Awards, 14 Emmy Awards, 10 Golden Globe Awards, three BAFTA Awards, one Academy Award, a Screen Actors Guild Award and an Olivier Award. These concerts are a massive effort. In this merry episode we speak with Scott Barrick of the Tabernacle Choir about everything that goes into getting these concerts produced. This episode features a healthy dose of Tabernacle Choir music and information about a new two-hour holiday special airing on PBS before Christmas. But that's not all. In this episode we also hear from two other artists performing on Temple Square - Allie Gardner, who with Wade Farr performs a haunting version of O Come O Come Emmanuel. That song is the oldest Christmas carol on record and we tell its fascinating backstory. We also share the incredible version of The First Noel performed last Christmas by Bryson and Tierra Jones, a must-hear tear-jerking arrangement of the classic Christmas song by Jared Pierce. Paul chats with Collabro ahead of their new single with Sir Cliff Richard Mistletoe and WineSingle Release Date – 26th November 2021 “I'm finding it hard to believe that it has been 33 years since I first released Mistletoe and Wine. I am really thrilled with this newly recorded version with the Collabro boys. I love their harmonies and it was a pleasure to sing with them, and if this new version gets everyone into the Christmas Spirit we will be very happy!!” – Sir Cliff Richard Following a hugely successful tour as special guests to Sir Cliff Richard in 2017, Collabro and Sir Cliff have become close friends in the industry and have supported each other, including Sir Cliff joining an intimate gig where Collabro performed at Pizza Express Holborn and Collabro performing at the Royal Albert Hall to celebrate Sir Cliffs 60 years in the music business.  Whilst Collabro were recording their Christmas album “Christmas Is Here” and Cliff was recording his “Music… The Air That I Breathe” album, they came up with the idea to re-record the festive Christmas classic “Mistletoe and Wine”, 33 years after its original release. The Collabro boys couldn't be more thankful for this opportunity and are endlessly grateful to Sir Cliff for his continued support. “It really is a dream come true and probably the most surreal thing we have ever done. This song was first released before any of us were born so we have literally heard it every Christmas our whole lives. Working with Sir Cliff has always been the most incredible experience and we really hope people enjoy this new version of the song.” Michael Auger Collabro Collabro are the World's Most Successful Musical Theatre Group. The boys met for their first rehearsal above a pub in London Bridge back in 2014. Soon after, they auditioned for ITV's Britain's Got Talent, and a month later received a full standing ovation from all four judges and the full audience at the Hammersmith Apollo. They went on to win the competition with one of the highest voting majorities of any series, and their debut album Stars went straight into the UK album charts at number one, was quickly certified gold, and became the fasting selling album of 2014. To this day, they are one of the most popular Got Talent winners ever.  Last year, Collabro released their album “Christmas Is Here” comprising of a range of festive classics and an original track, the titular 'Christmas Is Here', which saw them team up once again with Ben Adams from A1. After going from strength to strength with six top-selling albums, four sell-out UK tours, two US tours, headline slots at the London Palladium, Wembley Stadium, the O2 arena and the Royal Albert Hall, this summer saw COLLABRO performing at Tatton Park Pop Up Festival, In The Park with Katherine Jenkins, Sound On The Ground Blackpool, and performing with Alfie Boe at Trentham Live and are currently on their major headline Greatest Hits Tour. The group discusses their LDS missionary service where they would use their singing talents to get into homes to share their Mormon message. This and other events led to meeting as performers in a Broadway production of Les Miserables. Paul invites Casey, Brad, and Bradly Q to share the heart of their music and the purpose of their gifts.ABOUT GENTRIGentri, which is short for “The Gentlemen Trio” was established in June 2014 and comprises three dynamic tenors: Brad Robins, Casey Elliott and Bradley Quinn Lever. He joined the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra as assistant musical director and pianist for the Elvis Presley: If I Can Dream UK arena tour, and the Memphis Symphony Orchestra for the USA anniversary tour, ending at Graceland with Priscilla Presley for the Elvis 40th Anniversary Celebrations. Dominic also tours around the world with his piano duo The Piano Brothers. He is one half of musical theatre double act Ferris & Milnes, who have become known for their medleys of Stephen Sondheim, George Gershwin and Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber. Dominic is a classically-trained musician, having studied piano performance, singing and conducting at the Royal College of Music in London. In this podcast, we'll be hearing about his varied background in the classical, pop and musical theatre genres. We also discuss the crossover market and the process that goes into producing and creating a crossover album. In particular, he talks about working with Michael Ball and Alfie Boe. Interestingly, Dominic says that crossover albums are among the last that people listen to in full. This leads to a really fascinating discussion about the creation of music releases in an age of streaming and the current pop music market. Having exposure to many different genres of music, it seems, can contribute to one's musicianship and musicality and this is certainly the case in Dominic's work. Finally, we talk about a poignant video project he helped to produce: a performance of "We'll Meet Again," the iconic wartime song made famous by Dame Vera Lynn. It was given by some of the top names in the West End and entertainment to boost morale for the UK theatre industry. Many thanks to Dominic for taking the time to talk especially for this podcast! Margie’s guest this week is Rhiannon Lambert. Rhiannon is a Nutriionist with her own clinic on Harley Street. ,She imparts evidence-based health advice to a whole range of different clients – from young women to new mums and professional athletees. A popular face across social media, newspaper and on TV as she has consulted behind the scenes on the Masterchef series. She also works alongside doctors to demonstrate the influence nutrition can have on illness and recovery. So basically, she knows an awful lot about nutrition and having a good relationship with food to say the least. Her debut book Re-Nourish has just come out which is very exciting and is packed full of great looking dishes. Before all this Rhiannon won Classic FM’s Singer of the Year competition at the age of seventeen and went on to perform with Alfie Boe later that same year. She trained at the Royal Academy of Music. And somehow she still manages, amidst everything else she does, she still finds time to sing! So basically she’s a woman of many talents. I really like Rhiannon’s approach to food. It’s not about cutting things out of your diet or doing anything crazy, it’s simply a case of a little of what you fancy. Moderation being the key, which is, I admit, sometimes harder than others. Crumble seems to be one of Rhiannon’s favourite dishes which I can completely get on board with. A great crumble is hard to beat, and I like her mum’s addition of the oats in the topping. I do this too and it’s delicious. It was also a relief to know that Rhiannon snacks. As someone who seems to spend her life perpetually grazing I was very happy to hear that such is Rhiannon’s love of snacking, that she keeps a spoon in her handbag just in case she needs to eat a yoghurt. This sounds like a very sensible use of a handbag and may even entice me back to using a bag rather than just my pockets which is a habit I seem to have gotten into lately for reasons I can’t really explain. Her mum sounds like a fantastic cook and her childhood was filled with spaghetti bolognaise, crumbles, shepherds pies and even the occasional stir fry. All very normal and delicious sounding. I like the sound of her favourite sandwich being the pear, gorgonzola and roasted peppers – that sounds lovely or she also talked of sardines on toast which is a simple but delicious sounding choice. I don’t think sardines get enough air time, they are really good for you, and taste great! I’m going to have to look up what a Taiwanese porridge consists of as it sounds like it would be right up my street and I might even experiment with the scrambled tofu which sounds interesting! Anyone who serves two puddings at a dinner party sounds like someone I would get on with. And I only hope it’s not an either or situation and one might be allowed to have both. Desert Island Dish Sunday roast with all the trimmings. Cauliflower cheese, stuffing, cranberry sauce, gravy, red cabbage, roast potatoes…etc etc Luxury item: water bottle (and a hair brush) Don't forget to subscribe and leave a review as it really does help to give the show a little boost. Show Notes Les Miserables Ramin Karimloo Alfie Boe Episode Transcript Welcome to TFP – The Theatrefolk Podcast – the place to be for Drama teachers, Drama students, and theatre educators everywhere. Woohoo! I had to get excited there! I'm Lindsay Price, resident playwright for Theatrefolk. Hello! I hope you're well. Thanks for listening! This is Episode 156. You can find any links to this episode in the show notes which are at theatrefolk.com/episode156. Today, today is a Lindsay and Craig talk – Lindsay and Craig, Lindsay and Craig. That's Lindsay Price – me – and Craig Mason – co-owner of Theatrefolk and my co-cohort – co-cohort? Is that a word? Cohort! Cohort in crime. We had a unique theatrical experience a while back. We saw the same show twice, a couple of days after each other. We saw Les Miz with two different actors in the lead role – two different Jean Valjeans. One on his closing night and one on his opening night. So, what were the similarities? What were the differences? Did we like one more than the other? Is there room for actor interpretation in a long-running show like Les Miz? So many questions! I bet we have answers! I hope we have answers! We better have something, you know – otherwise, it'd be a pretty short podcast. So, let's find out. LINDSAY: All right, let me set the scene. This is Lindsay. Hello everybody. I am also here with Craig Mason. CRAIG: Hello everybody. LINDSAY: Hello everybody. It is quarter to 11 p.m. on a Tuesday night and we are in New York City. We have just come back to the hotel after seeing Les Miz – Les Misérables – for the second time in two days. Now, there is a very specific reason why we have seen them twice and I'm going to turn this over to Craig. Craig, why did we decide to come to New York specifically to see Les Miz basically two times in a row? We saw it Sunday afternoon and then we saw it Tuesday night. CRAIG: A few months ago, I was looking at the theatre area in Reddit and there was a mention that Alfie Boe was coming in to play Jean Valjean in Les Miz. One of the comments on it was Ramin Karimloo was the existing Jean Valjean and he was leaving the show and Alfie Boe was coming in and one of the comments on the post was, “Wouldn't it be amazing to be able to go see closing night for Ramin Karimloo and then come back two days later to see Alfie Boe do it?” LINDSAY: And you said, “Hey, Lindsay!” CRAIG: This little lightbulb went over my head and I thought, “Wow! That would be kind of cool to see!” And so, we checked our calendar. The trip is very tight against some other plans we have but we were able to squeeze it all in and here we are. LINDSAY: Yeah, and we were like, “Well, you know, we won't be able to do this because the tickets will be extraordinary.” No, the tickets were pretty much normal. Okay, is the time going to fit? Yeah, the time fits. And here we are! Craig, what was the first time you were exposed to Alfie Boe? CRAIG: Well, I first knew of Alfie Boe from watching the 25th anniversary production of Les Misérables which was showing on PBS. I was actually never really a fan of the show but, when it was around, I was in theatre school and I was in that phase where anything that had more than five lights in it was like a mega-musical and was not cool because we were doing these shows with chairs and flashlights and that was cool.

We are rehearsing for the upcoming show with James Burton….his son isn’t well by all accounts but hopefully he’ll be O.K. by July….the song this week isn’t one of mine (sadly) but it’s part of the live concert I did with James a few years back…it’s one of Ricky Nelson’s classics….listening to it brought back a lot of memories. I watched the VE Day Concert last weekend and was blown away….I thought it was sensational…the orchestra were top of the range as were most of the artists…the sound man should be knighted…it was brilliant and very moving….I felt the rendition of “You’ll never walk alone” at the end by Alfie Boe and Katherine Jenkins was a bit misplaced….the song was written in 1945 when the war was over…but maybe Alfie is promoting his latest CD?...apart from this I thought the show was outstanding. Then we have the mindless morons who always appear from under the nearest stone with the slightest excuse to have a stupid demonstration over the election result…part of which was to daub graffiti on the memorial to the women who played their part in the war….spraying “Tory Scum” along with an expletive on the memorial…THESE are the dopes who the heroes were fighting for…makes me sick….it achieves absolutely nothing ….and sadly we have to wait another million years for them to evolve. Art has been on the news this week with a Picasso fetching 120 million quid…very nice…considering a sixth former could do better….apparently these things are purchased as an investment…in 10 years it will be worth twice that….but it doesn’t work with cheap paintings…you have to be a billionaire to double your money…so that’s O.K. then……..then we have the wonderful Turner Prize…we’ve had the unmade bed…now we have the street in Liverpool which up until recently was derelict and run down….causing the council to sell off the houses for ONE POUND….but they have grown a few hedges and grass and it’s up for the famous Turner Prize…am I missing something here?. ....and speaking of billionaires I have been watching the Cannes Film Festival with all the stars including Cheryl Cole…who proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that you can get anywhere with absolutely no talent. Lastly….we must all feel sorry for Kevin Pieterson who can’t get into the England cricket team…despite scoring a record 350 in one innings for his county….but the selectors don’t like him…boo hoo he’s not my friend…for Heaven’s sake cricket is by far the most boring sport under the sun and that’s when you are WINNING !!....these guys get very well paid and why I’ll never know….yawn yawn. Oh and congratulations to Ant and Dec for getting another BAFTA award….one day we will be able to turn the TV on and they wont be there looking back at us…but not at the moment.

Show Notes babynames.com thesaurus.com Google translate Subscribe to The Theatrefolk Podcast On iTunes. On Stitcher. Episode Transcript Welcome to TFP, The Theatrefolk Podcast. I am Lindsay Price, resident playwright for Theatrefolk. Hello! I hope you're well. Thanks for listening. Today, we're talking names and taking no prisoners or something like that. But first, let's do some THEATREFOLK NEWS. Okay, it's the second week, there's no news. It's December! But, what I will say is that you should stay tuned for next week's podcast where Craig and I curl up by the YouTube fire and talk about Les Miz. I have had a long, long history with this musical. I wore out the tape – yes, that's how old I am – the tape that I had when I was seventeen. And Craig is kind of new convert. There was a great big concert, a huge concert where Alfie Boe is playing Jean Valjean and one of the Jonas brothers was Marius, and he's been playing that quite a bit on his iPod. So, and of course, unless you've been under a rock – or you don't care about Les Miz which is, of course, quite possible – you know that THE MOVIE (in all caps) is coming out on Christmas Day and there has been a lot of talk about THE MOVIE and who is starring in THE MOVIE and I still can't quite wrap my head around Anne Hathaway as Fantine – it's not doing it for me. But, you know, who knows? Could be, could be great. In any case, Craig and I are going to talk next week about THE MUSICAL. So, join us for that. Lastly, where, oh, where can you find this podcast? We post new episodes every Wednesday at theatrefolk.com and on our Facebook page and Twitter. You can find us on the Stitcher app AND you can subscribe to TFP on iTunes. All you have to do is search on the word “Theatrefolk.” Episode Twenty-One: We're Playing The Name Game I, I have a confession to make. I, Lindsay Price, am very obsessed about the names of the characters in my play. I am very obsessed. I am obsessed to the extreme. Naming is a big part of the writing process for me. It is a huge part, especially at the beginning when I'm just starting to write, when I'm just starting to form this shapeless amoeba into something with a beginning, middle, and end. One of the first things I do which makes me feel like I'm on the right path as I start writing a play and I start thinking about who the people are in this play is giving them names. Giving a character a name is like, in a very artsy fartsy kind of way, but it's kind of like bringing them to life. It makes them seem like a human being, you know. Names are pretty important to us, you know. Whether we like our names, or we hate our names, or our names mean something, or we go by a nickname, or a name can just say so much about a character and about us. And when I'm writing, I want to be able to see and hear that character, and if they're nameless, it just doesn't quite work for me – this is my little problem to bear and I just find it's that much harder to move forward with my writing when my characters are just swimming around in a nameless void, or worse, if they end up with the wrong name. And sometimes, I'll counter this. I'll go in the complete opposite direction. I just wrote a play last year called Chicken Road in which, very purposefully, the characters were numbers so then none of them had names and it was very interesting to me how that worked in the writing process. I had to really, really work to visualize these characters and make them individuals even though I was purposefully not making them individuals in the final text if that makes sense. And sometimes, when I'm writing, it's really clear when I've given a character a wrong name, you know. It comes to light that, as I'm writing it, it's not a good fit. It's not a good match.
