From her breakout role as Charlotte in The Inbetweeners and gracing the covers of lads' mags, Emily Atack always knew she'd be famous but the level of attention that came with it wasn't quite what she'd bargained for, especially when that attention has gotten nasty.Emily and I have been friends for some time but this is the first time I've seen her since becoming a mum so it was fantastic having the chance to chat to her about her career and how having a child has changed her world view. We chatted about her experience with the press and the toxic language we use around weight and women in the public eye. We also discussed her advocacy around the changing the laws of sexual consent and how she envisions a future where her son grows up in a world that respects and values women.A conversation with Emily will always be filled with laughter, but she also articulates so well the experience of being a woman in the public eye. Our conversation left me feeling just how much more men need to introspect—and ultimately step up.If you enjoyed this episode, please click follow - we have so many great guests like this one, you won't want to miss out!You can also follow us on Instagram and Tiktok @greatcompanypodcast or email us at greatcompany@jampotproductions.co.ukIf you'd like to see Emily in her new show, Rivals, head to Disney+--THE CREDITSExec Producer: Jemima RathboneAssistant Producer: Gurlina HeerVideo: Jake JiSocial Media: Laura CoughlanGreat Company is an original podcast from JamPot Hosted on Acast. Unpacking the Controversial Sexual Consent Campaign - HJ Talks About Abuse Episode Discussion

HJ Talks about abuse

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 15, 2024 9:03 Transcription Available

In this week's episode of HJ Talks About Abuse, hosts Kathleen Hallisey and Hannah Hodgson delve into the nuances of a controversial campaign addressing sexual consent. Aptly titled "I'm Asking For It," the campaign, fronted by Emily Atack and orchestrated by CPB London and Right to Equality, aims to push for an overhaul of legal regulations surrounding sexual offences and promote the affirmative consent model. The hosts critically analyse this campaign and its potential implications for survivors, the legal system, and societal perceptions surrounding consent. The hosts outline the campaign's aim of challenging the status quo in the realm of sexual consent - moving from ambiguities and the concept of "implied consent," to a more explicit, affirmative model where unequivocal consent is required. As they dissect the campaign, they highlight its timing and relevance, released near International Women's Day, reflecting the ongoing struggle for women's safety, rights, and acknowledgment of sexual abuse. They further probe into the paradigm shift that the new proposed consent model would bring about, not only legally, but also in the dynamics of sexual interactions. This includes the prospect of every sexual activity needing explicit consent, a change that would render previous "grey areas" obsolete, thus empowering survivors and reducing instances of victim-blaming. By bringing to the table issues of cyber flashing and cyber sexual harassment, Emily Atack's involvement and the public response, they dissect different facets of this contentious campaign. Kathleen and Hannah underscore the urgent need for a more assertive and clear legislation on consent, in response to the challenges faced by survivors and the uncertainties present in the current law. The episode ends on a hopeful note, reinforcing HJ Talks About Abuse's commitment to discourse on survivor empowerment and consent, and promising to keep listeners updated on developments related to the campaign.

Moving Matters
Episode 28: Moving Matters with Ed Davis of Davis & Mac

Moving Matters

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 26, 2021 58:25

In this episode, Ed Davis, Director of Davis & Mac discusses how he became involved in the industry after helping an old friend who ran a successful hourly rated man and van business but was snowed under with work. It was suggested to Ed that he get a van to take on the excess work, so after pitching the idea to Dan Mac (who Ed had previously worked with in a recording studio) and the industry having such a low cost of entry, Davis & Mac was born in 2013. We discover that Davis & Mac are a London based removals and storage company, running 5 luton vans, and they mainly provide house pack and moves, storage and interior installations, all local as the guys are not keen on overnights. We discuss Ed's lightbulb moment when he was involved in moving a crated chandelier for an interior designer from a storage facility to a super mansion in Virginia Water and discovering just how broad the pricing structure is within the industry. We discover Ed's story behind the multi coloured fleet of lutons, and it's a long and very interesting one. Ed looked and began to analyse the branding and marketing of the industry and discovered that although it is a majorly masculine industry, Ed also noticed that his best and highest paying customers tended to be women. Ed also discovered that an angle that had not been done properly at that time was social media, but before tackling that Ed tells how their very grand crest came about. Back to Instagram and Ed tells how he continued to post photos of his fleet, and after 4 years of building a following Ed received a message from Binky Felstead (from reality TV show Made in Chelsea) who had been recommended Davis & Mac by some of her followers (of which she had 1.4 million at the time!). Having secured the removal for Binky, Ed and his crew arrived three weeks later in two newly wrapped vans in pastel colours, one in green and the other in pink, which Binky loved and posted about on her Instagram account. We discuss that following on from Binky's move Ed and his team have moved several high-profile celebrities as a result of social media and recommendation, even ending up in the national press when they were booked to move Emily Atack (who has 1.7 million followers on Instagram). We discover that Ed's challenges have been learning to be a boss, managing people (including hiring friends), controlling his emotions, and learning the industry. We discuss that the one thing Ed would change from his past is to know his numbers, as although a gung-ho attitude led to a 3-year contract with a Self Storage Centre, it ended up costing them towards the end due to increased running costs as they began to expand the company. We discover Ed's highpoints, and it is not only the branding and marketing of Davis & Mac but also meeting others from within the industry. We discuss that the change Ed would like to make to the industry is late finishes, which is not the industry's fault but the house buying process. We also discuss the current driver and porter shortage. We discover that the advice Ed would give to himself just starting out in the industry is knowing your numbers, be warned about pushing yourself to go into the higher end of the market, and due to past mistakes (which Ed has learned from), Ed states that he's probably been through the most expensive university course just running the company! We discuss that in the next 5 years Ed would like to grow the business further and is on the lookout for their own warehouse (as all storage is currently with Cadogan Tate) with a big yard space, which would allow Ed to double the fleet size, but he has no desire for lorries yet. Industry wise Ed believes cloud software will be key, Ed would like Elon Musk to automate the retrieval of containers from storage, but the big change Ed foresees is autonomous driving. We discover that outside of work Ed likes to travel, although his last trip was to Sri Lanka in January 2020 just before lockdown and since then he has done nothing but work. Ed also enjoys a bit of DJ'ing too. We discuss that during the pandemic Davis & Mac did an awful lot to help their local community, assisting Age UK Kensington & Chelsea to deliver food to the vulnerable in the area, with up to 1,000 deliveries a week! And as always we end Moving Matters with two funny moving stories, both regarding divorce jobs! Enjoy! I too find myself getting stuck somewhere between being an overdeveloped teenager and not quite being a fully functioning adult woman. I have no idea how to back-up my iCloud, I can't drive and I'm pretty bad at stopping men with exciting beards and unbuttoned vintage shirts from taking a big old walk all over me. In fact, not a girl, not yet a woman . . . it sums up my twenties perfectly." Emily Atack was flung to fame at just 17, as the girl-next-door character in The Inbetweeners. Almost ten years later, she won over the nation on I'm a Celebrity Get Me out of Here with her cracking impersonations, epic bravery in the Bushtucker trials and general positivity. Now, in her first book, Emily digs deep and reveals the hilarious highs and the heart-breaking lows that rocked the years between. With astonishing courage and her trade-mark humour, she shares stories about her family, first dates (and bad dates), first loves, moments where she's hit rock bottom and how she finally came to realise that it was all going to be okay. Are We There Yet? is a warm, honest, FUNNY book for women of any age who have ever felt they needed to look a certain way or felt uncomfortable in their own skin. It's about life, love, everything grubby and glamorous in between, and ultimately realising that you're good enough. (Also she bought a laptop specifically to write this book so you better believe it's getting down and dirty :D)

Hi Guys Here's my update for this week: I've had clients flying in for their seven day programmes from Germany, Sweden and the states this week. It's always great to work with men from all sorts of ages and all sorts backgrounds .

Did you spot me on TV? I was on TV this week with the lovely Emily Atack on the W channel for her series #Adulting. In the episode we discussed what it's like to date in your thirties? Did you spot me in the news? Off the back of this feature that aired this Wednesday I was then mentioned in the mail online You can read it here: https://dailym.ai/2ZbmMsd Your questions this week:

 - How does meeting women in the day compare to meeting women in the evening? - How to communicate you’re looking for a relationship - What is the best book to improve your conversation skills with women? - Why would a partner want to go on a break or need to take some time out? - Would you say drinking and taking drugs has a negative effect on meeting women? - As the football season is fast approaching do you think it’s a good idea to take a girl to a game as a first date? - Is it better to go out with the mindset of being social or to seek out dates? - Is there such thing as too much dating? - Is it possible to have a relationship whilst still trying to get good at meeting other women? - How do I get more social? - What’s my opinion on having a girlfriend vs going out and meeting many girls? - What’s my advise as a first timer going to Killing Kittens? - How do you build tension with someone in isolation? Baby Spice Emma Bunton may not have released much music but she was busy having babies, designing childrens clothing, nappy and products as well as hosting popular reality programmes in the UK and US. All whilst maintaining a steady radio presenting career on Heart FM.   It’s an exciting start to this era for Baby – because she has a baby. Her first, Beau, born in 2007.   2009 – Emma starts her stint on Heart FM. She covers a couple of shifts and is rewarded with her on Saturday drive time slot. She pre-records because Baby has better places to be than a stuffy studio on a Saturday evening.   2010 – She joins the judging panel of Dancing On Ice. She did 2 series. It was a little controversial at the time. People wondered, with no ice skating background, what she could possibly provide as a judge. But she was praised for locking horns with chief judge Jason Gardiner and not being afraid to make unpopular comments. She said it helped her shed her Baby Spice tag…. Because she became Sassy Spice. Here are some of her best put downs: She sure has. On the third show she told GMTV's Dr Hilary Jones: "I literally couldn't breathe through the whole dance and when you lifted her I felt physically sick, I was so nervous for you both. "I just didn't enjoy it and I'm glad you were smiling because I wasn't." The next week she said of Emily Atack's performance: "I just thought it looked messy, unsteady. I felt like you were being dragged around. You are improving but very little." Then, in show seven, she told Sharron Davies: "It's a little bit like déjà vu for me, with a different outfit each week." 2011 – Baby Tate. To celebrate she launched her own baby range with reputable fashion retailer, Argos. Much bigger than the capsule Geri knocked out with Next….. this was a 99 piece collection. Her eldest Beau was modelling the collection – following in his Mamas footsteps, because one of her first jobs was a child model in the argos catalogue. I bet she was a proper cherubic little model. All blonde ringlets and chubby cheeks. 2011 – She really commits to Heart FM. Covers maternity leave for Harriet Scott on Breakfast, hosting alongside her old sparring partner – Jamie Theakston. Breakfast is a big shift. It’s a high profile position, a lot of responsibility and hardwork. Its all early mornings and beaming smiles. But Baby does a good job; she ends up taking over the spot permanently and doing it for 5 years. Until 2018. 2012 – She did the previously mentioned Mel C duet, I know him so well….. Which I think is just lovely of them to work together. The video is beautiful, if a little boring, of them just hugging. Interview quotes they described the song as “having the spirit of spice”. 2013  was a big year for Emma Bunton – not only did she win Foxy Bingo Celebrity Mother of the Year award she had a new tv show. “Your face sounds familiar” – it’s a bit Stars in their eyes. 6 celebrities portray famous singers, chosen at random, to win £10,000 for their chosen charity. They’re trained by Yvie Burnett – who is the second best vocal coach in the world. After Carrie from Fame Academy. Its all very Saturday night cringe – filing the spots between X Factor and Ant&Dec. 2014 - Jade Jones appears on “Big Reunion”. Baby named as ‘Lead Singer’ of the group. Link for the image: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0S4opaSrTHI 2017 – She appeared on the judging panel of new American reality show, BoyBand, which sought to find the new big BoyBand. She appeared alongside Nick Carter, Timbaland. Hosted by Rita Ora.             Best bit was towards the end they did a judges medley, with the contestants. Emma completes a flawless rendition of Say You’ll Be There. Of course she does. If only Rita were so lucky. She tries to join Timbaland for “Way I Are” and it is car crash.             They create the band “In Real Life”….. who have released 6 singles since in the past 18 months. One charting. It’s a start.  2018 – She becomes the host of American version of Great British Bake Off. Guardian had a great tagline: Contesants will have to dust it, make it, proof it, bake it – show her how good they are   We find her back recording, Studio Spice. More than a decade after her previous effort. Signed a deal with BMG records – who tend to focus on publishing rights and legacy artists. She is a songwriter with a legacy…. What a home.   Does mean her time is short. She has to say goodbye to Heart Breakfast. 5 year stint, successfully so. Award winning stint. Including “Radio presenter of the year” and “digital radio programme” at the TRIC awards. But they do give her a Sunday night slot (bet that is a pre-record). She knows how to keep a foot in the door (must be easy to work with if they keep you on that long).   Which makes room for her to finally get married! After 8 years of being engaged.
