In 1985, everyone who knew Joe Simpson believed he was dead. At just 25 years old, Joe and his climbing partner, Simon Yates, became the first people to scale the west face of Siula Grande in the Peruvian Andes. Tragically, on the way down, Joe fell and broke his leg. As Simon tried to help him descend, Joe fell again—this time into a massive crevasse. It seemed certain he was lost forever and Simon returned to base camp, grieving the loss of his friend. But then, three days later, Joe crawled back into camp. He had survived. Despite frostbite, exhaustion, infection, and permanent damage to his leg, Joe was alive. His story is almost too incredible to believe. We've all heard stories like this—accounts of survival or hope that seem impossible. But perhaps the most unbelievable story of all is the resurrection of Jesus.Jesus was crucified by professional Roman executioners, buried in a tomb, and three days later he rose from the dead. As unbelievable as that may sound, even more astonishing is the claim that his resurrection has the power to transform lives—even today, 2,000 years later.

Today on the podcast, McKay chats about making tough choices, the Endowment Effect, and why great risks can have great rewards. Opening up the episode with a story about two men's dangerous descent down the face of Peru's Siula Grande, McKay details the hardest decision of one of their lives and what it's like to work under pressure. From picking flavors at the ice cream shop to a marriage proposal, choices follow us everywhere, even when we think we don't have any. Feeling helpless or trapped? There is always a way out, but it isn't always easy. That's why this episode is all about forgetting failure, forsaking the status quo, and paying attention to the mood. The most important thing to remember, though, is that nothing changes unless you do. Taking risks can be scary, but you also just might find that your best life may lie on the other side. If McKay's learned anything in his life, it's that he's never regretted making a bold choice, whether it went his way or not. So take a note from the Christiansen book, and listen to what he has to say about decision making and why it's okay to make the daring one. The Finer Details of This Episode:Mount Huascaran and Yungay's powerful earthquakeSimpson and Yates' dangerous descentMaking tough choicesWhy life is your greatest instructorStatus Quo BiasFocusing on failureRisk and rewardsHow mood affects decision makingQuotes:“They enjoyed the thrill of their success only for a few minutes before the dread of the descent covered their thinking. Why? Because 80 percent of the deaths and accidents on climbs like this happen on the descent.”“If he cut the rope, he knew he would be sending his friend below him to a certain death. But if he didn't cut the rope he would fall along with Joe and likely die as well. There was no good choice. How do you choose?”“Some of us don't like to make a choice, because the consequences are hard to live with, and impact us and others.”“We make bad judgments, lack experience, misread, misinterpret, and mistake the wrong thing for the right thing. And life is tough. Life teaches us there are consequences for bad choices. And, as a result, we may shy away from those choices.”“What is often true is: you can't change the cards you are dealt with, but you can change how you play them.”“When faced with a choice that involves an element of risk, the vast majority of people will choose what they have: the status quo.”“I get feeling helpless or trapped. I have felt this way before, but there is something liberating and energizing about choosing.”“And it may be time to make the bolder choice, to purposefully act against mood and the status quo in your life. If you don't feel like it, that very mood and feeling may be telling you to choose it anyway. Your best life may be found on the other side of today's difficult choice.”Links:https://www.mckaychristensen.org/

5 Most Amazing Wilderness & Ocean Survival Stories Mother Nature is unforgiving and life on this planet is a fragile thing. Here one minute and gone the next in the blink of an eye. Despite this however, from time to time people can show a resilience when facing dire circumstances that is nothing short of extrodianry. These are the 5 most amazing wilderness & Ocean survival stories. 5. Yossi Ghinsberg It started as a promising adventure. Yossi Ghinsberg's dream was to hike into uncharted areas of the Amazon rainforest, the thought of discovering places that may never had been seen by man, was something he thought would be spectactular. In 1981 at the age of 21 - After serving in the Israeli Navy, he heading out to South America to make his dream become a reality. Along the way, he met some new friends, Marcus Stamm from Switzerland; Kevin Gale, an American photographer; and Karl Ruprechter, an Austrian who claimed to be a geologist in search of an indigenous tribe and that he knew how to get them into the jungle. Despite hardly knowing each other, the four set out on foot for the remote heart of the Amazon jungle. 4. Debbie Kiley It was October 1982; Debbie Kiley was a 26-year old sailor who went out to sail with four other friends on a routine trip from Maine to Florida. From the onset, Debbie noticed there was something wrong. The skipper was lazy, two men on the boat kept bickering and the boat, a 58-foot sailing yacht called the Trashman wasn't properly maintained. They made a stopover in Annapolis, Maryland and It was here on their next leg when they were caught in a fierce storm. The boat was tossed in strong 60-knot winds and huge 40-50 feet swells. They barely had time to let the coast guard know they were having trouble let alone inflate a life raft when the yacht sank in open waters. For the next five days, the five survivors clung onto a dinghy and one by one, they succumbed to their deaths. 3. Joe Simpson & Simon Yates For Joe Simpson and Simon Yates, the mountains were home. The two young friends were in Peru in 1985, climbing the remote Siula Grande. Simpson was 25 years old and Yates was 21 at that time. The two reached the summit two days after leaving base camp. But they say getting up is always easier then coming down. The next day while decending, Simpson slipped and fell. The impact was so severe he immediately knew he broke his leg and by then he thought he was as good as dead. 2. Jan Baalsrud Part of the Norwegian resistance, Jan Baalsrud was trained by the British in Special Operations, to assist in helping free his country. On March 24, 1943, Jan, with 10 other comrades, sailed aboard a 75-foot fishing vessel named the Brattholm on a mission to destroy a German air control tower. The group was given the name of a storeowner to contact but what they didn't know was that their real contact had died and the replacement was someone whose sympathies were with the Germans. 1. Jose Salvador Alvarenga Jose Alvarenga was a fisherman last seen sailing with another fisherman named Ezequiel Cordoba on November 18, 2012. Jose had meant to go with his usual partner, out off the coast of Mexico, but he cancelled at the last minute. Jose radioed for help just before all electronics stopped functioning - soon after that their engine died as well. Sue Lawley's castaway this week is the mountaineer Joe Simpson. He was born in Kuala Lumpur in 1960 where his father was stationed with the British Army. Over the next few years the family lived in Gibraltar, Ireland and Germany, although Joe returned to England for schooling at Ampleforth and showed an early adventurous spirit and love of sport. But it was only after reading the classic account of attempted ascents on the Eiger - 'The White Spider' - by Heinrich Harrer that he developed an interest in his future passion. After a brief spell working at a saw mill and then at a quarry he studied English Literature at Edinburgh University. There he began climbing in earnest often attempting dangerous routes beyond his experience before tackling a previously unconquered route up Siula Grande - a peak in the Peruvian Andes. This climb was to make his name. He and his partner Simon Yates made the first successful ascent of the mountain's west face only to run into difficulties after Joe shattered his leg on their descent. After running out of resources and with no prospect of rescue Simon painstakingly lowered Joe towards shelter before being forced to cut the rope on his friend. Joe had inadvertently slid over an overhanging rock and was slowly pulling the two off the mountain. He landed in a crevasse and after being left for dead amazingly managed to crawl miles back to safety. Simon Yates was widely attacked for his actions in the climbing community leading Joe to write a defence of the rescue with his book 'Touching the Void', which has also been made into an award-winning film.
