Having worked in radio and television for 40 years, Ed's now written a memoir called ‘Confessions: A Life Re-Examined'. He tells us about looking back on his life, a process which he has referred to as a ‘reawokening', re-assessing it in the light of today's prevailing culture. When he was sacked suddenly from Today, it was assumed it was because he was too posh, and now he puts the record straight. He is a delightful story and regales us with tales from his time as a student at Cambridge, becoming a newscaster and the perils of broadcasting live. He also describes having to reappraise his time at Ampleforth after the sex scandals emerged. Finally, he talks movingly and candidly about living with cancer and how his life has been made richer and happier by his faith.

This week we dive into Tether, a stablecoin playing an important role in disrupting the legacy financial system, recently announced to be launching on Polkadot. Joe Petrowski, (Technical Integrations Lead, Web3 Foundation) speaks with Paolo Ardoino, CTO of Bitfinex and Tether. They discuss stablecoin trends, regulation and compliance with central banks, CBDCs (Central Bank Digital Currencies), the likelihood of central banks running on public blockchains such as Polkadot and Ethereum, achieving blockchain interoperability through common goods, and the upcoming launch of Tether on Polkadot. Highlights: 00:39 - Intro to Ardoino and Tether 06:38 - The issue of crypto arbitrage 08:57 - Stability by matching a dollar to the pace of Bitcoin 11:01 - Boom and innovation in the stablecoin sector 12:20 - The risks of decentralized stablecoins 13:30 - Achieving purchasing power stability 14:49 - The scope for non-US stablecoins 16:15 - Tether Gold, the precious-metal-backed stablecoin 20:34 - Individual assets vs. a managed basket of currencies 22:48 - Regulation and scrutiny from central banks 27:35 - Blockchain for central banks 28:40 - Tether’s criteria to deploy on a blockchain 30:15 - Common goods for blockchain interoperability 35:07 - Resilience through multiple blockchain support 36:49 - Tether to launch on Polkadot and Kusama Links: Paolo Ardoino on Twitter (https://twitter.com/paoloardoino) Tether on Twitter (https://twitter.com/Tether_to) Grenache (https://github.com/bitfinexcom/grenache) Ampleforth website (https://www.ampleforth.org/) Ardoino’s reading list: Eric S. Raymond, The Cathedral and the Bazaar Key Quotes: “I believe that you can not really understand as a CTO, all the nuances and complexities of your platform, if you stop coding” “the reason why our team decided to create Tether was to solve one problem I’m sure you are familiar with, that is crypto Arbitrage” “Why don’t we create a dollar that moves at the same pace as Bitcoin” “I would stay pure and not allow centralized stablecoins…. Crypto backed stablecoins are a very good value add to the sector, but I would prefer or would have preferred to not have decentralized stablecoins and centralized stablecoins.” “If you are using technology and the banking network, you have to respect the same standards, there is no other way around. That is why Tether has the function to freeze funds in order to cooperate with law enforcement. We do it quite openly, and we communicate when we do. Also, we did that to help many projects. There was an exchange hacked six months ago and we helped them to freeze thirty million dollars worth of Tether. There were many DEFI projects that were hacked and we worked with law enforcement to freeze those funds. That is what is happening in the banking world if someone steals funds from your bank account, the bank has the right to freeze your funds if you have stolen funds. We had to replicate the same functionalities in our centralized stablecoins. That is something that the decentralized coins don’t have and don’t need because they don’t use the banking system, we do, and we have to respect that.” “The idea that central banks will issue directly on Ethereum or Omni or Polkadot is quite realistic.” “You give more freedom to your users, you will gain traction.” “Supporting multiple blockchains makes the entire infrastructure resilient.” Special Guest: Paolo Ardoino.

Ampleforth (AMPL) is a monetary innovation and primitive building-block for the decentralized finance ecosystem. Like Bitcoin, it is uncollateralized. Unlike Bitcoin, the Ample eschews a fixed supply schedule and instead automatically adjusts supply in response to price-exchange rate. The Ampleforth protocol receives exchange-rate information from trusted oracles, and propagates that to holders of its units (Amples) by proportionally increasing or decreasing the number of tokens each individual holds. The unique incentives, movement pattern, and monetary qualities of AMPL, make it ideally suited to: 1) add value to baskets of digital assets, reducing aggregate volatility, 2) be useful as a building block in broader decentralized finance (DeFi) applications, much as physical commodities were building blocks in the historical financial system. We unstack:► Influential economic thinkers► Failed currency pegs► Monetary trilemma: adaptive supply, durable value, stable peg► The base money problem v. the fiat problem► How AMPL stacks up to Ampleforth's initial goals► Rebasing tokens v. coupon-based tokens► Comparing single token v. multi-token model► Is the goal of AMPL stability?► AMPL's stable contracts utility► Evolution of debt in the crypto market+ more!LINKSAmpleforth: A New Synthetic CommodityCentral Banks — A Bad Influence on Decentralized FinanceAlgorithmic stablecoins aren't really stable, but can the concept redeem itself?Synthetic Commodity Money (2013)Risk and Return of Cryptocurrency (2018)Stability, Elasticity, and Reflexivity: A Deep Dive into Algorithmic StablecoinsThe Letter and Spirit of Composability FOLLOW AMBER GROUPTwitter: https://twitter.com/ambergroup_ioEmail: contact@ambergroup.ioWebsite: https://www.ambergroup.io/DISCLOSUREThe Crypto Unstacked Podcast is meant for informational purposes only and should not be considered as financial or investment advice. We first had Ampleforth on the show in late 2019, when AMPL was below a $1 million market cap. In the summer of 2020, AMPL's market cap spiked up to over $665 million, and has since settled between $150-$200 million. Looking strictly at the numbers, the adoption and demand for AMPL is very obvious. What isn't so obvious, and what we spend our time discussing, is WHY Ampleforth has made such a lasting impact on the crypto market. We ask the co-founder's what surprised them most after unleashing their project into the wild. We analyze the pros and cons of DeFi, we discuss the concept of diversification in the crypto markets, we take a look at the upcoming releases that Ampleforth has planned, and we clarify the novel “rebasing” mechanism that Ampleforth pioneered. Academy of Ideas
After toppling statues, is it time to rewrite the curriculum?

Recording of a debate via Zoom on Monday 6 July 2020. Support the Academy of Ideas's programme of free debates by making a donation here: academyofideas.org.uk/donate   The brutal killing of George Floyd provoked a furious reaction across the world. In England statues of slave owners toppled and Premiership footballers took the knee. Amid this rise in concern for racial social justice, calls to de-colonise the curriculum now attract huge support. A petition to battle racism by adding more BAME writers to the GCSE reading list has already reached half-a-million signatures and is supported by headteachers. A cross-party group of more than 30 MPs has demanded the national curriculum be re-evaluated. Private schools including Fettes, Ampleforth, Winchester and St Paul`s Girls look set to de-colonise syllabuses after Black Lives Matter protests. So, should we change the curriculum?   Most advocates of curriculum change say they don`‘t want to abolish the canon but simply add to it in order to include a wider range of perspectives. They want to reconfigure subject reading lists, currently `full of dead white men`, in favour of more ethnically-diverse figures. Others campaign to rewrite the history curriculum to make it compulsory to study the destructive aspects of empire and imperialism which, it is claimed, laid the foundations of racism. Campaigners suggest that these negative aspects of British history are wilfully ignored, but others claim they are already covered in lessons. Regardless of the facts of the matter, the status quo is seen as not taking racism seriously.   Should we welcome the de-colonisation of the curriculum as a way of correcting white Anglocentric bias and institutional racism? Or, however well-intentioned, will it encourage tokenistic box-ticking lessons? Might more diversity in the curriculum allow our BAME students to better see their identities affirmed or is this superficial gesture politics? The answers to these questions may depend on how we see schools. Are they microcosms of society and community, where diversity and identity are explicitly celebrated? Or are knowledge transfer and the curriculum a specific domain which should be immune from the external preoccupations of the world of politics and pressure groups?   What should be the aim of a good education: to affirm a young person’s identity or take them beyond it?   SPEAKERS   Tarjinder Gillprimary school teacher based in Leicester, with experience of teaching in disadvantaged areas. She regularly comments on the curriculum. Tarjinder is unconvinced by campaigns to de-colonise the curriculum.   Dr Alka Sehgal Cuthberteducator, researcher, writer and co-author of What Should Schools Teach? She thinks we need a better curriculum, rather than a de-colonised one.   Gemma Reesa passionate supporter of Black Lives Matter who hopes to study politics and social anthropology at Manchester University in September. She thinks the curriculum needs to change and welcomes the increased attention to it provoked by the death of George Floyd.   Andre Ediagbonya-Davieslives and goes to school in Tottenham and hopes to study history at Cambridge in September. He is particularly critical of “amnesia and bias in the history curriculum that too often brushes over, or ignores, the destructive aspects of British imperialism and its racist legacy”.

Ampleforth is a cryptocurrency attempting to become an essential building block to an alternative financial ecosystem. The protocol’s native token, AMPL, is a non collateralized cryptocurrency, like Bitcoin, but with a twist: It is supply elastic. This means the token and protocol will automatically increase or decrease the quantity of tokens held in user wallets based on 24 hour weighted volume price. AMPL operates as an ERC-20 token on top of the Ethereum blockchain. Some claim that the Ampleforth protocol’s implementation of “countercyclical” economic policy makes it a good complimentary collateral because they posit that this mechanism ought to give AMPL a low correlation to the likes of BTC and ETH. Others are not so sure: Does it really make a difference whether you have an inelastic supply without a target price, or an elastic supply with a target price of one? Is AMPL really not correlated to other types of collateral, and should this be so, does it even matter? There has been a lot of chatter about Ampleforth in recent months. Is it legit, or is it a scam, 'HEX with Stanford credentials', as one pundit commented? We spoke with the co-founder Evan Kuo, who attempts to explain how it all works and straighten out misconceptions surrounding the protocol.Topics covered in this episode:Evan’s backgroundWhat is Ampleforth and its missionWhat is Ampleforth’s value proposition and the rules based system it usesHow the rebasing worksSlow traders vs fast tradersWhere profits from fast traders come fromUsing Ampleforth as base moneyToken distributionThe integration hurdles with AMPLDoes the community truly understand the protocol?Episode links:Ampleforth websiteAMPL TalkAMPL Token DistributionAmpleforth White PaperAmpleforth TwitterEvan Kuo TwitterState of the Network, August 4th, 2020This episode is hosted by Friederike Ernst & Sunny Aggarwal. In this article [1] I want to discuss the dynamics of Ampleforth [2,3], which is a crypto currency with its twist. Instead of issuing a fixed number of units, Ampleforth monetary supply expands and contracts dynamically to keep one Ampleforth valued at around 1 USD. The expansion and contraction is executed in a pro-rata manner, meaning that they do not impact the percentage of overall supply an investor holds. On first sight this looks like a stable coin, but on second sight it is clear that this is not quite the case -- it is a regular crypto coin whose price dynamics has been moved to play out in the volume space. What I mean with this is that when Ampleforth market cap goes up / down 10% then investors will feel the impact of that -- not by a change in price, but by the fact that they suddenly hold more / less currency units.

In this week’s interview, I spoke with Brandon Iles, the CTO of Ampleforth. Brandon is a former Google and Uber software engineer, and built his first crypto app together with Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong. Today, he’s trying to rebuild the way money works. For its huge ambitions, Ampleforth is a relatively little-known project. It wants to create an entirely new category of monetary assets — one that doesn’t have Bitcoin’s gold-like fixed supply, it doesn’t have Ether’s oil-like utility, it’s not fiat-backed like USDC, and it’s not collateralized like Dai. So what is it? It’s a token — AMPL— whose value comes from having a price which moves in a predetermined band, thanks to a smart contract which automatically contracts or expands its supply. The end result is a token that trades at close to $1, the 2019 US dollar, to be precise, but Ampleforth doesn’t like to be called a stablecoin —you're about to find out why. We also talked about the project’s recent liquidity mining program called Geyser, where traders can earn AMPL by supplying liquidity on Uniswap, and how for Brandon, the dizzying activity around these schemes is proof of DeFi’s success. Brandon also discussed the project’s roadmap, from being used as a way to diversify collateral in lending platforms like Maker and Compound, to denominating debt obligations, to very far out into the future, replacing central bank issued currencies.

Ethan is joined by Evan Kuo from Ampleforth, for a exploration into the potential of DeFi - Decentralized Finance. Today's decentralized assets, such as Bitcoin and ETH, can be seen as the primitive building blocks for tomorrow's DeFi use-cases. These include lending, debt, and synthetic equities, however, we quickly come to a realization of their inherent limitations. Evan breaks down how their limitations are due to their high correlation to each other and why they bring about the need for extreme overcollateralization and the risk of autoliquidation. This brings up a big problem in crypto that not many are addressing. The diversification of these primitive building blocks will be required for DeFi to reach its potential. Hypercorrelation is a huge problem, one that threatens the very viability of cryptocurrency.  Further topics covered in this episode: The AMPL is a decentralized commodity-money like Bitcoin, but with near perfect supply-elasticity like fiat. Its protocol automatically increases or decreases the quantity of tokens each user holds in response to 24 hr volume weighted price by adjusting a global scalar variable (similar to a gravitational constant or coefficient of expansion). Because traders of this coin realize gains and losses in quantity as well as price, the protocol introduces a fundamentally new set of incentives--requiring profit-maximizing users to trade in a different manner.  Ultimately, unique behavior in response to these incentives creates a new different movement pattern, resulting in lower correlation with bitcoin and floating price assets today.

Evan joins us to discuss Ampleforth and the Ample; the Ample is a commodity-money, like Bitcoin or gold, but with near-perfect supply elasticity, like fiat. It is the first sound money with elastic supply. Evan discusses their opinion that scarce commodity-monies like gold and silver are naturally fair and independent. They are immune to runaway inflation, but cannot efficiently respond to changes in demand—making them vulnerable to economic shocks and runaway deflation. To address this shortcoming, the project's founders designed a synthetic commodity-money that propagates price-information into supply, much like how thermal expansion propagates nearby kinetic energy into a material’s volume in the natural world.

Tim Hayward looks at the tradition of monastic food production, with stories from Sicily, New York as well as from closer to home.Ever since the 6th century rule of St Benedict said that monastic orders should be self- sufficient, monks and nuns have taken to the land and to the kitchens to produce food and drink for sale. Tim introduces us to some specific examples of how that tradition is thriving today. Giorgio Locatelli and food historian Mary Taylor Simeti explain how an array of recipes for sublime biscuits and pastries made by Sicilian nuns have survived for centuries, due in no small way to a woman called Maria Grammatico who went to live in a convent where Nuns would live out their final days. She would collect their recipes and she went on to become one of the most famous makers of Sicilian pastries. Giorgio Locatelli lovingly recreates some of those sumptuous treats in his Locanda restaurant today. We visit the New Skete Nuns in New York who have featured in the New York Times and Vanity Fair with their famous cheesecakes. Tim talks to food historian Annie Gray who reminds him of the overall impact of the monastic orders on food production but who also cautions us not to get too carried away with the idea of continuity. We hear from the writer, Madeline Scherb, who went on her own pilgrimage around the world to cook and pray with some monks and nuns; recalling the chanting of the Hail Mary on a caramel production line. She explains how St Benedict himself was not able to persuade his own monks to abstain completely from alcohol, and so the tradition of producing liquors of all sorts is one of the longest surviving strands of monastic production. In the UK, that includes the famous Ampleforth abbey ciders and beers. And there's Buckfast tonic wine from Devon; a drink that has attracted controversy in some areas. Join Tim Hayward as he raises a glass to a tradition of monastic food production that appears to be alive and kicking.Producer: Sarah Langan.
