Trauma surgeon Martin Takac came to Alaska to climb Denali, the highest mountain in North America. He reached the summit. The hardest part, it seemed, was behind him. Then, on the descent, the ground disappeared. A hidden snow bridge collapsed beneath Martin, dropping him deep into a crevasse on the Kahiltna Glacier. He survived the fall—but his body became wedged so tightly inside the narrowing walls of blue ice that rescuers couldn't simply pull him back out. What followed was an extraordinary 15-hour crevasse rescue involving Denali guides, National Park Service mountaineering rangers, volunteers, a helicopter pilot, and eventually a piece of equipment no one would normally expect to see on a glacier. Meanwhile, Martin was trapped almost completely motionless as the cold slowly pushed his body into profound hypothermia. In this episode of The Crux: True Survival Stories, we follow the rescue hour by hour and explore hidden crevasses, snow bridges, glacier travel, severe hypothermia, and the decisions that can separate an ordinary descent from a fight for survival. 00:00 — Podcast Cold Open00:28 — Trapped in Blue Ice01:43 — Meet Martin Takac02:46 — Finding the Edge04:32 — How Far Can You Go?06:24 — The Seven Summits07:47 — Why Denali Is Different09:44 — The Descent10:22 — A Calculated Risk11:48 — One Last Decision12:51 — What Lies Beneath the Glacier14:12 — One Careful Step16:51 — A Man Disappears18:23 — The Rope Won't Move19:33 — The Trap Inside the Crevasse19:57 — Sixty Feet Down21:35 — The Rescue Begins22:34 — The Cold Takes Over24:58 — Into the Blue26:39 — Running Out of Options29:31 — The Perfect Disguise31:47 — Time Becomes the Enemy33:17 — One Last Idea34:57 — Back Into the Light35:55 — How Is He Still Alive?39:06 — What the Glacier Left Behind References National Park Service. “Two Climbers Rescued from the Kahiltna Glacier.” June 5, 2017.https://www.nps.gov/dena/two-climbers-rescued-from-the-kahiltna-glacier.htm Anchorage Daily News. “Inside the Dramatic, 14-Hour Rescue That Freed a Climber From a Deep Crevasse on Denali.” June 6, 2017.https://www.adn.com/alaska-news/2017/06/06/the-story-behind-the-dramatic-14-hour-rescue-that-freed-a-slovakian-climber-from-a-deep-crevasse-on-denali/ Anchorage Daily News. “Denali Climber Who Survived 15 Hours in Crevasse Says He Is Grateful for a New Life.” June 20, 2017.https://www.adn.com/opinions/2017/06/20/denali-climber-who-survived-15-hours-in-crevasse-says-he-is-grateful-for-a-new-life/ CBS News / Associated Press. “High Drama: 15-Hour Rescue From North America's Tallest Mountain, Alaska's Denali.” June 7, 2017.https://www.cbsnews.com/news/15-hour-rescue-north-americas-tallest-mountain-alaskas-denali/ CBC News. “‘Not for the Claustrophobic': Climber Falls Down Narrow Crevasse on Alaskan Glacier, Rescuers Chip Him Out.” June 8, 2017.https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/north/denali-crevasse-climber-rescue-alaska-1.4149936 Mountain Trip. “June 2 West Buttress Team — Guides Perform Crevasse Rescue on Unroped, Private Climber.” June 6, 2017.https://mountaintrip.com/trip-reports/new-audio-recording-396/ Unofficial Networks. “Colorado Guides Receive National Bravery Award for Saving Climber's Life on Denali.” September 16, 2022.https://unofficialnetworks.com/2022/09/16/mountain-trip-bravery-award-denali/ WesternSlopeNow (KREX). “Colorado Guides Recognized for Saving Climber's Life.” September 2022.https://www.westernslopenow.com/news/colorado-guides-recognized-for-saving-climbers-life/ Noviny.sk (TV JOJ). “Aljaska: Slovenský Horolezec Spadol do Úzkej Trhliny v Ľade.” June 7, 2017.https://www.noviny.sk/zahranicie/229582-aljaska-slovensky-horolezec-spadol-do-uzkej-trhliny-v-lade U.S. Geological Survey. “Geology of Denali National Park and Preserve.”https://www.usgs.gov/geology-and-ecology-of-national-parks/geology-denali-national-park-and-preserve Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. The Host's Message to Brandon:I just wanted to say a big thank you for being such an awesome part of the podcast series. Each episode brought something unique, but your honesty, expertise, and stories really elevated the whole experience — pun intended. From technical breakdowns to lightning-round chaos, you brought the perfect mix of knowledge, humor, and humility. I know our listeners are walking away more informed, more inspired, and with a whole new respect for the world of guiding.Seriously, I appreciate you taking the time to share your insight and be part of this. You made it feel like more than just a podcast — more like a campfire conversation after a long climb.Hope to cross trails again soon — whether on a mic or a mountain.- JasonEpisode Description: Ropes, Reps, and Real Talk: What It Really Takes to Be a Mountaineering GuideIn this fourth and final chapter with mountaineering guide Brandon, we're strapping in for a high-altitude conversation on certification vs. experience, ethical guiding, and what it takes to truly be “mountain ready.” Whether you're a first-timer shopping for a guide or a weekend warrior dreaming of leading climbs, Brandon shares insider wisdom on training, gear, and the real checklist that matters. We talk about why certification isn't just a badge, how the guiding industry can improve, and how to separate influencers from professionals. Then, we dive into Brandon's personal gear must-haves, what training he recommends, and the one thing he wishes more clients would do before stepping on a rope team.Bonus: A rapid-fire lightning round that'll make any alpine sufferfest look like a day at the beach. Frostbite or altitude sickness? Crevasse jump or cornice collapse? Brandon picks his poison — and yes, we find out his go-to summit snack. If you've ever asked, “Do I really need a certified guide?” — this episode is your wake-up call.

Thanks so much for listening to our podcast! We are moving through the season of Lent, and this sermon is based on Luke chapter 16:19–31, which is the parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus. It is a remarkably provocative parable about wealth and economic disparity in the first-century Roman imperial world. How might it speak to us as people of faith today, in a world where we still see tremendous differences between the "haves" and the "have nots"? Hope this sermon will be meaningful and provocative to you this week.To find out more about our church, you can head on over to www.williamsburgbaptist.com. This Lukan fable has a pretty clear message: Wealth creates an impassable crevasse between humans. Wealth is only one of the many things that can create impassable crevasses between people; so too can race and religion and immigration status, to name a few more. But I have to believe the fable is ultimately meant to inspire us to bridge crevasses before it's too late. This sermon will take you to the midnight bedroom of Ebenezer Scrooge, to the summit of Mt. Rainier (aka “mama Tahoma”), to a jail cell in Durham NC, and to an Executive Board decision of some uncharacteristically speedy Mennonites. Buckle up and come along for the ride; we need one another more than ever. And please remember: I do not answer questions. I do not answer questions. I do not answer questions. Send us a Text Message.Tom Jacobson swung into the Playwright's Spotlight in the midst of his coinciding plays The Bauhaus Project and Crevasse to discuss the correlation to both of the pieces and the subject matter of fascism and anti-Semitism in Nazi Germany. While discussing the historical influence of the Bauhaus, we explore previews and changes within coinciding pieces, writing trilogies and their process and presentation, standalones within trilogies, jumping timelines in historical works, balancing historic events and relationships, and taking creative license. We also discuss research, outlining, and when to start writing, breaking down structure, layering characters with and for the actor, table work and the role of the playwright, doubling and tripling up actors, writing complex sets with simplicity, stage magic on the play, and the benefits of academia as well as relationships and how they can help land productions. It's a wonderful conversation with a few technical hiccups that you might find entertaining, but you'll walk away with some education in history in addition to some insight in the craft of playwriting. As always... Enjoy!Tom Jacobson has penned more than 50 plays and has had more than 100 productions of his works performed around the world. His play The Twentieth-Century Way premiered at The Theatre @ Boston Court and the New York International Fringe Festival garnering five Ovation Award nominations, four Los Angeles Drama Critics' Circle nominations, one GLAAD Award nomination, a Fringe Festival Award for Outstanding Production of a Play, a PEN Center Award for Drama and then moved Off Broadway to Rattlestick Playwrights Theatre. He has been a co-literary manager of The Theatre @ Boston Court, a founding member of Playwrights Ink, and a board member of Cornerstone Theater Company and The Theatre @ Boston Court. His most recent play The Bauhaus Project opened at the Atwater Village Theatre and will be running simultaneously with his play Crevasse at the The Victory Theatre here in the Los Angeles area. Today we're heading down to the white continent of Antarctica. This vast land holds an extremely special place in my heart and this was my second trip to the continent. This time I visited by flying over from South Africa and staying at one of White Desert's beautiful camps called Echo Camp.  I took along my recording equipment and am so glad I did because I think you'll find the stories that follow quite inspirational. While my day to day was focused on mountaineering activities, what was most special about the trip was meeting the team and learning about the incredible amount of logistics that go into the camp and transporting scientists and dignitaries to and from Antarctica.  There's something about being secluded with humans from around the world, in place that waves no flag. My guests today - Neil, Stuart, James, Sean, and Dumi share how months on end in Antarctica have inspired and changed them and tell stories of some incredible things they've experienced  I hope you enjoy this special episode of Luxury Travel Insider.   Learn more at www.luxtravelinsider.com   Connect with me on Social: Instagram LinkedIn

As mountain athletes it's easy to get consumed by our objectives and our drive to continuously improve and get stronger can be draining. It can make us forget that one of the most meaningful parts of the mountains is the people we meet on the way, the bonds we form and the experiences shared. In this conversation we explore what drives a 25 year old who was born and raised in the flat state of Long Island New York to pursue a challenging solo ascent of Denali. Our Guest today is Alex Mitchko, an apprentice ski and alpine guide. I met Alex this past spring while climbing Denali in Alaska. During his expedition he had a 45 mph skiing accident…. and two harrowing crevasse falls. Amazingly he walked away injury free.Spending time with Alex, you could see his passion for the mountains radiating from him. But what stood out even more was his ability to connect with people. Alex brought out the best in everyone around him and is a great reminder that the people we are with are just as important as the objectives we covet. Please rate, review the show, and share this podcast with your friends. There's a phrase I find interesting. It's often used to describe a person who seems to have an unusual power in different ways. The phrase I'm thinking of is “force of nature”. When I hear “that man, or that woman, is a force of nature”, it makes me think of someone who comes in like a whirlwind, with a clear objective, and nothing is going to stand in their way. And that description makes sense, because that's how nature is sometimes. Here in Florida, we're about to go into that magical time of year called Hurricane Season. A storm comes up out in the Atlantic, and they often make their way here. And they are literally a force of nature. Thankfully, we usually have lots of warning, so we have time to prepare. But if you're in the path when a hurricane comes through, it's loud, and scary, and terrifying. It doesn't care about you. It's just doing what nature does. But sometimes nature can be just as scary, and just as deadly, in complete silence. That's what Gregg found out, when he found himself alone and wondering if he would survive. Is it better to ski? When odds of your survival are against you, all you can do it trust your mountain rescue team and hope they are like Chis Erickson and his team who's tenacious fight to save a life will blow your mind.

Joining me is W. Wallace Wagner Jr., the author of “Within Grasp” and “Crossing the Crevasse” to discuss the mysteries of the Bible, extraterrestrials, the original Goddess and God of the Old Testament, and the loss of the gnostic gospels. What is the relationship to UFOs, Jesus and Mary Magdalene? Three years ago Wallace had a UAP sighting that drastically altered his perception of reality.Wallace received his BS degree from West Virginia University, and did graduate studies at the University of Charleston and Marshall University. He has gained a unique understanding of the Bible from 40+ years of study and meditation. Wallace has a keen eye for looking at the Bible through a different lens.Having interests in crafts (a.k.a. UFOs, UAPs, etc.), the Great Pyramid, legitimate crop circles, eschatology and the Bible, Wallace's studies have led him to Egypt, Israel, and Portugal. In 2016, he had his own sighting of the white Tic-Tac variety (representative picture on front cover) in the town of Bedford, Virginia, which caused him to critically re-evaluate his conservative Christian teachings. He now realizes Jesus should be looked at more as a teacher and the Bible, as written, is not what it is purported to be! https://withingrasp.net/PLEASE HELP THE CHANNEL GROW • SUBSCRIBE, like, comment, and click the Notification Bell so you don't miss a show. Summit day on Mt. Rainier had just begun. Less than an hour out of high camp, carefully leading her team up a well-trodden boot track, Rita Hansen suddenly plunged into a crevasse. After falling more than 60 feet, she was completely buried by falling ice and snow. Amazingly, Rita was basically unharmed. But she couldn't move. In episode 55 of the Sharp End, Rita shares the details of her 2007 accident and rescue, a story she has never told publicly before. The Sharp End is presented by Mammut, with additional support from Desert Mountain Medicine and Suunto. This podcast is produced by the American Alpine Club.
