The Real Housewives of DC's Cat Ommanney steps Behind The Rope. With all this nostalgia running rapid in the BravoVerse these days, we figured it a great time to share this chat with the Real Housewives of DC OG - there was only one season after all - Cat Ommanney. Cat shares stories that sound like they are straight out of Bethenny's Reality Reckoning, it makes us wonder if she has called B or her team of super powered attorneys. Cat gets reminiscent about what it was like to film the one season wonder, shares her feelings on her cast-mates Mary Amons, Linda Erkiletian, Stacie Scott Turner and last, but certainly not least, Michaele Salahi (now Schon)  and fills us in on the status of those relationships today. On a more serious note, Cat discusses the issues of racism and politics that were ever present during the RHODC season. Of course, we address how the show was impacted by the worldwide, viral country security breach of the Salahi's “crashing” The White House Dinner. We discuss the implications of having production temporarily shut down, the involvement of the FBI, the federal investigation not only into the Salahis but Bravo as well, and why the show was not “green lit” for a much needed second season. Oh hey there Michaele and Tareq. In typical Cat fashion, nothing is held back and we wouldn't expect anything less.  @catommanney @behindvelvetrope @davidyontef BONUS & AD FREE EPISODES Available at - www.patreon.com/behindthevelvetrope BROUGHT TO YOU BY: AQUATRU - aquatrue.com (20% Off Plus a 30 Day Money Back Guarantee. Dan talks with Lara Salahi, a professor of journalism at Endicott College, where she teaches a range of courses, from feature writing to digital journalism. She has also been a digital producer for NBC Universal, and a field producer for ABC News.  Salahi has also done some consulting and writing on science and health projects. She was executive producer on a podcast called Track the Vax, which ran during the height of the pandemic. And she collaborated with Pardis Sabeti, a systems biologist and Harvard professor who researches infectious diseases like Ebola and Lassa virus. They wrote a book together in 2018 that is still relevant: It's called "Outbreak Culture: The Ebola Crisis and the Next Epidemic." They updated the paperback with a new preface and epilogue in 2021 to reflect on the Covid19 outbreak, and the lessons learned from past epidemics.  In Quick Takes, there's so much going on that Dan discusses three developments. One involves the future ownership of the Portland Press Herald in Maine as well as its sister papers. The other is about a dramatic, unexpected development in hyperlocal news in New Jersey. The third involves some very good news for a daily paper in central Pennsylvania. Dan and his Northeastern University colleague, Meg Heckman, pay tribute to a legendary journalist — Mike Pride, the retired editor of the Concord Monitor in New Hampshire and the former administrator of the Pulitzer Prize. Mike died on April 24 in Florida of a blood disorder. He was 76, and left his imprint on journalism in many ways. Meg worked at the Concord Monitor for more than 10 years. Ellen was out of pocket for this podcast episode but did the sound editing and post-production. She'll return next week.

With all this Scandoval talk, we cannot help but reminisce about the early days of Vanderpump Rules. Reminiscing about the early days of VPR makes us reminisce about the early days of Bravo which makes us reminisce about many of the early gone, but not forgotten, Bravo shows. One of those shows is Real Housewives of DC. Today we share this gem from our back catalogue with one of the five RHODC cast members, Mary Amons. Mary chats about her time on the show, cast mates and the difficulties of casting a show with wives in the political sector. Of course, the conversation turns to the infamous Salahi White House crash and the implications, not only for them, but the entire Real Housewives of DC cast, franchise and Bravo as a network from this one event. Did you know RHODC production was shut down for several weeks while Congress and The White House launched a thorough investigation into this breach of US security. If you're ready for a deep dive into one of the most misunderstood gut health conditions on the planet, you're going to love my conversation about small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, AKA SIBO, with registered dietitian Ayten Salahi. I discovered Ayten's work a while back on Instagram, and let me tell you, it's rare to discover a practitioner I am so aligned with so it's exciting for me to introduce you to her wonderful work! She dives deep into topics around irritable bowel syndrome, SIBO and diet with a lens on inclusive, positive and joyful - and yes, effective - nutrition strategies for getting your digestive function back on track. We're tackling SIBO today, which is the subject of a lot of misinformation online, particularly around the role that nutrition plays in caring for it. SIBO is a debilitating gut condition that is notoriously difficult to treat…which sets it up as prime internet fodder for wellness discourse. We get super specific about what SIBO is - and isn't - on this episode, as well as tackling diagnosis, treatment, and the very surprising role of nutrition in SIBO care. If you've got SIBO - or know someone who does - this episode may lead to a lot of surprising insights! About Ayten Salahi RD: Ayten Salahi, MS, RDN is a GI- and plant-focused registered dietitian, culinary nutritionist, and intersectional food policy advocate. She completed her masters degree at the Tufts Friedman School of Nutrition Science and her Dietetic Internship at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). There, she completed a concentration in medical nutrition for gastroenterology and received the Louise Hatch Award for outstanding professional promise and standards of practice. On this episode we chat about: How Ayten's background in neuroscience got her interested in the gut brain connection What is SIBO, actually? What are the symptoms? What are methanogens and how do they impact motility? Why SIBO is so difficult to diagnose and treat All the underlying causes of SIBO (you'll be shocked) The truth about how nutrition affects SIBO Should you go low FODMAP? Why pharmaceuticals are an important part of SIBO care Why physical movement is important Why you can still eat food you love while you help your gut feel better The major red flag when evaluating SIBO information Support the Pod! With an understanding of the path of disease and insight into political psychology, they show how secrecy, competition, and poor coordination plague nearly every major public health crisis and reveal how much more could be done to safeguard the well-being of caregivers, patients, and vulnerable communities. A work of fearless integrity and unassailable authority, Outbreak Culture: The Ebola Crisis and the Next Epidemic (Harvard UP, 2021) seeks to ensure that we make some urgently needed changes before the next pandemic. Lynda Erkiletian from The Real Housewives Of DC steps Behind The Rope. The Real Housewives of DC! As Andy Cohen once said directly to Lynda, “once a wife, always a wife.” We agree. We do agree. Originally, Linda explains, RHODC was pitched to her as a different type of non housewives show. Hmm, we have heard that before. Lynda explains how she was originally cast, when she found out it was in fact a Real Housewives show, and the reservations she had about joining the juggernaut franchise. She discusses the inevitable presence of politics in any show based in DC and the effect that had, not only on the season of RHODC that aired, but what a different show it would be if aired in the current political climate of today. Lynda also talks about the challenges both logistically and confidentially about casting and shooting in the political sector. Lynda expresses the disappointment in being the first of the housewives franchises to be cancelled. Of course, we discuss her cast mates Mary Amons, Cat Ommanney, Stacie Scott Turner and last, but certainly not least Michaele Salahi (now Schon), what filming with each was like, which relationships changed for the better and worse as a result of the show, and where each of those relationships stands today. We focus on what is was like to be part of a franchise that was “hijacked” by one cast maneuver for an event that made national headlines, was a breach of national security, almost shut down the whole production, involved the FBI, and, is most likely the reason why the show was cancelled. Michaele and Tareq Salahi. We go there. Lynda also gives us her thoughts and ideas on what the franchise would have been like if there had been a second season green lit without the Salahis. On the show, today is academy award-winning documentary and film director, and producer, Kevin Macdonald. He is one of few directors who dance the line of film and documentary seamlessly. He directed documentaries like Whitney (2018), crowdsourced documentary - Life in a Day (2011), Marley (2012), among others. He is famously known for his 2006 drama film, The Last King of Scotland, starring Oscar winning best actor, Forest Whitaker. Kevin has made a huge name for himself and his work over his 27 years in the industry - dabbling in commercials, films and documentaries. As a boy, his granddad, Emeric Pressburger who was a legendary filmmaker in the 1940s  lit his passion for filmmaking. When his grandfather passed, Kevin wrote a biography in 1994 about his grandad’s life journey, titled, ‘ The Life and Death of a Screenwriter’, which he later made into a documentary ‘The Making of an Englishman’ (1995). This was the start to him becoming a documentary maker. In 1999 he directed the Box office hit and Oscar-winning documentary, One Day in September, which is about the 1972 Munich Olympic Games massacre, featuring a lengthy interview with Jamal Al-Gashey, the last known survivor of the Munich terrorists. This project catapulted his career big time. He then made the adventure-docudrama, Touching the Void, another critically acclaimed film that won Best British Film at the 2003 BAFTA. The true story of two climbers and their perilous journey up the west face of Siula Grande in the Peruvian Andes in 1985.Kevin’s directorial debut on a film was the Oscar® winning, The Last King of Scotland. It is an adaptation of Giles Foden's 1998 novel by the same title. This historical drama which also carries a political thriller genre received riveting reviews and performed exceptionally - both commercially and critically.  Forest Whitaker's performance stole the show and earned him an Oscar for Best Actor. This $6million budget film grossed $48.4million at the Box Office and has an 87% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The story details the brutal reign of Ugandan dictator Idi Amin as seen through the eyes of his personal physician. James McAvoy stars as the doctor who slowly realizes that he is trapped in an inescapable nightmare, and Forest Whitaker assumes the role of the notorious despot. In commemoration of Youtube’s fifth anniversary, Macdonald was hired to direct and produce the very unique film, the Life in a Day (2011) documentary. It was crowdsourced from 80,000 Youtubers and regular people all over the world sharing their life in one day. The film serves as a time capsule to show future generations what it was like to be alive on July 24, 2010. The completed film debuted at Sundance in early 2011In February of this year, Kevin's latest film, The Mauritanian was released in the US. He explains in this interview that it was a very difficult subject matter to tackle. The entire movie was shot in two locations. Both in South Africa and in Mauritania. The Mauritanian is a suspense legal-drama based on the 2015 memoir Guantánamo Diary by Mohamedou Ould Salahi, a true story of Salahi's experience of being held for fourteen years without charge in the Guantanamo Bay detention camp. The film stars Jodie Foster, Tahar Rahim, Shailene Woodley, and Benedict Cumberbatch. You going to really enjoy this conversation. When Mohamedou Salahi arrived at the Guantánamo Bay detention camp, in August of 2002, he was hopeful. He knew why he had been detained: he had crossed paths with Al Qaeda operatives, and his cousin had once called him from Osama bin Laden’s phone. But Salahi was no terrorist—he held no extremist views—and had no information of any plots. He trusted the American system of justice and thought the authorities would realize their mistake before long.  He was wrong.  Salahi spent fifteen years at Guantánamo, where he was subjected to some of the worst excesses of America’s war on terror; Donald Rumsfeld personally signed off on the orders for his torture. And, under torture, Salahi confessed to everything—even though he had done nothing. “If they would have wanted him to confess to being on the grassy knoll for the J.F.K. assassination, I’m sure we could have got him to confess to that, too,” Mark Fallon, who led an investigation unit at Guantánamo, said. Ben Taub reported Mohamedou Salahi’s story for The New Yorker and tried to understand what had gone wrong in the fight against Al Qaeda. Salahi met Ben in Mauritania, because, when the U.S. released him, it was under the condition that Mauritania would withhold his passport. He would like to go abroad—he needs medical treatment, and he hopes to live in a democracy. But, for an innocent victim of Guantánamo, being released isn’t the same as being free.    This episode originally aired August 2, 2019. Ben Taub’s reporting on Mohamedou Salahi won the Pulitzer Prize for feature writing in 2020.

In a brand-new cinematic take on the brutal reality of Guantánamo Bay, The Mauritanian tells the true story of Mouhamedou Ould Salahi, who was imprisoned in the detention camp without charge for 14 years. Salahi was finally released in 2016 when the US Government finally accepted his confession had been obtained through torture. While hundreds of voices from Guantánamo remain silenced, Salahi's story gives us precious insight into the injustices and the phycological toll prisoners endured. With the looming twentieth anniversary of the opening of Guantánamo, the new Biden administration recently declared their intention to close the detention camp by the end of their term. The Real Housewives of DC’s Cat Ommanney steps Behind The Rope. Checking in from her current home in Majorca, Spain, Cat is here to tell it all. With The Real Housewives of DC having been re-aired during a Marathon on Bravo earlier this year, Cat gets reminiscent about what it was like to film the one season wonder and how she felt after the show aired. She explains how life changed after the show came out and what is it like to still be recognized today all these years later. Cat shares her feelings on her cast-mates Mary Amons, Linda Erkiletian, Stacie Scott Turner and last, but certainly not least, Michaele Salahi (now Schon) and fills us in on the status of those relationships today. Finally, we discuss the epic RHODC reunion, how Andy Cohen handled himself under the eyes of federal scrutiny and how it was one of “the longest days” of Cat’s life. In typical Cat fashion, nothing is held back and we wouldn’t expect anything less. @catommanney@behindvelvetrope@davidyontefBonus Episodes Available On Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/behindthevelvetropeMerch Available at - https://www.teepublic.com/stores/behind-the-velvet-rope?ref_id=13198 See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

In January, The New Yorker’s Ben Taub travelled to Mauritania to meet with Mohamedou Salahi. An electrical engineer who had lived in Germany, Salahi was detained at Guantánamo Bay for fifteen years and tortured, despite the fact that he was not a terrorist.  But one of the key pieces of evidence was that Salahi’s cousin, known as Abu Hafs al-Mauritani, was a high-ranking member of Al Qaeda—a member of the group’s governing Shura Council and a spiritual adviser to Osama bin Laden, who had drafted bin Laden’s infamous fatwa against the United States. While Salahi endured torture at Guantánamo, Abu Hafs was never captured or detained by the United States. When Ben Taub met Abu Hafs at a wedding of Mauritanian élites, he wondered how this man had gone free while his cousin had suffered so much. Abu Hafs agreed to an interview, but it quickly took a turn that Ben didn’t expect.

They say never meet your heroes. Thank goodness Emmy Award Winning Jim O'Heir isn't AJ's hero!  (Full disclosure, this blurb is being written in the third person by AJ so it's kind of surreal. Also, no need to take any of this seriously.)  Actually, AJ considers Jim, who played Jerry Gergich on Parks and Rec, a good friend who he feels honored to joke around with. If only Jim would relax that darn restraining order on him! But really though, Jim is a prince of a man. Which is a coincidence because he has a Prince Albert! He forced AJ to look at it during the interview. Because Jim doesn't wear pants during interviews. Look it up. Jim is promoting an exciting new movie, Middle Man! It's out in theaters June 9th 2017! We're thrilled to have Canadian funny man Scott Thompson stop by for a chat this week. You know him best as a part of the comedy troupe The Kids In the Hall and together with Kevin McDonald, Scott is currently on tour with a brand new two-man, stand-up/sketch version of their unique brand of humor called, Two Kids, One Hall. They're stopping by the Arlington, Virginia Cinema & Draft House August 19 & 20, and have dates scheduled all over the country through the fall. Scott tells us why Canadians have exported so many funny people, why he's obsessed with fruit, who he finds funny (including frequent Swish guest Margaret Cho!), and how he shares a name with American comedian Carrot Top! He also tells us about his a passion project, his Danny Husk graphic novel (including a bi-sexual king and human/non-human sex, of course). The show is really excited to be bringing you guys new music almost every single week...and this one is no different. geO Louis is a young hottie singer/songwriter/performer out of the NYC and we not only chat with him for a few minutes about his sound but we have two of his poppy dance tracks, Work and Over & Over. (And...um...you need to scroll all the way to the bottom of this page to see a picture we found of geO we kinda dig.) And with special in-studio guest host Eboné Bell--one of our favorite lesbians, she of B.O.I. Marketing & the Capital Queer Prom--the kids team up and play Jason's version of "Password." Eboné's girlfriend Angel helps with the words and let's just say that comedy ensues. This game is certainly going to make it into rotation; it's a hoot. ALSO ON THIS EPISODE... Scott thinks a listener needs to establish a Wikipedia page for the Swish Edition; We think the Bert & Ernie marriage petition is not helping our cause; We discuss podcaster/comedian Adam Corolla's recent anti-gay (or was it comedy?) rant; The Salahi's of White House crasher fame get dissed by Bravo yet again; Singer Adam Levine has solidified his place as a new gay hero; HBO's True Blood has been renewed for a fifth season; We're late with this, but apparently Black Spark revealed his real name; It's our very last show before Camp 2011; and, Dale has a BRAND NEW nickname! Episode 147 is called, "The Password."
