Chris Mackowski on “A Tempest of Iron and Lead: The Battle of Spotsylvania Court House” for more info: www.chicagocwrt.org For twenty-two straight hours, in torrential downpours, up to their knees in mud and blood, Federals and Confederates slugged it out in the most intense sustained hand-to-hand combat of the war. A panoply of horror, one soldier called it. A Saturnalia of blood. Hell's Half-Acre. The slaughter pen of Spotsylvania. Most remember it simply as the Bloody Angle. Chris Mackowski, Ph.D., is the editor-in-chief and co-founder of Emerging Civil War and the series editor of the award-winning Emerging Civil War Series, published by Savas Beatie. Resurrection isn't a sentimental idea for funerals, it's a claim about reality that reshapes everything. We start in Luke 20 where Jesus answers the Sadducees and anchors our hope in a living God who keeps His promises. If God is truly the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, then death doesn't get the final word and neither should fear, cynicism, or moral drift. From there, we bring that hope down to street level with Titus 2: what older men and women should model, how younger families should be mentored, and why biblical marriage is less about comfort and more about credibility. We also sit with Jesus' warnings about religious leaders who crave status, use big words, and harm the vulnerable, then echo Psalm 89's reminder that God's throne rests on righteousness and justice. Proverbs 14 adds a practical edge: correction can heal, but refusing it leads to ruin.We also talk about patriotism and memory through a piece on Paul Revere's ride and America's 250th anniversary, asking what happens when we stop teaching Scripture and our national story. Along the way, we wrestle with hard questions about public safety, cultural cohesion, and what it means to love your neighbors while still telling the truth about the direction of your country. If you care about Luke 20, Christian worldview, biblical marriage, and faith in public life, this one is for you.Subscribe, share this with a friend, and leave a review so more people can find the show. ***THIS EPISODES IS A REBROADCAST OF EPISODE 117 WITH AN UPDATED ADDED TO THE BEGINNING!*** This week, we decided to rebroadcast our coverage of Katelin Aken's disappearance after learning that James Branton, Katelin's step-father and the last person to have seen Katelin, was arrested for multiple sex crimes. This arrest brings investigators one step closer to uncovering what happened to Katelin 10 years ago. ------- In this, the first installment in our “Not a Runaway” series we discuss the mysterious disappearance of 19 year old Katelin Akens. “Katelin Michelle Akens was last seen on December 5, 2015, in the vicinity of Oak Crest Drive in Partlow, Virginia. She was visiting family in Spotsylvania County, Virginia, and was scheduled to fly home to Arizona on December 5, 2015. However, she did not board her flight and has not been seen since. On December 7, 2015, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) recovered a piece of blue luggage from a roadside ditch, unzipped, empty, and with a missing wheel. A wallet was located inside the luggage with Arizona identification belonging to Akens.“ Right now, In the United States there are 194,673 reported missing girls and women under 21, and that only accounts for the time that has elapsed since January first, according to national statistics by the end of the year there will be twice as many. 91% of these women and girls are classified as Runaways. It's comforting to assume these women and girls just decided to go somewhere else, but ask their families how many of them actually did that, and I think you'll get a vastly lower percentage. We need to believe these families, we need to give these girls the importance they deserve, we need to find them. All of them. Anyone with information about Katelin or her disappearance should call the Spotsylvania county sheriff's office at (540) 582-7115 or Spotsylvania's Crime Solvers at (540) 582-5822 or 1 (800) 928-5822 Click to learn more James Branton Arrested For Sex Crimes 10 Years After 19 Year Old Katelin Akens Goes Missing FBI official listing for Katelin Help Find Katelin Akens Facebook Group *Affiliate Link WWBD Merch Buy your WWBD swag here! Mark Travis, Long-Term Care Supervisor, and Amy Swift, Social Services Director, talk about why Long-Term Care services are so important for families in Spotsylvania County. They say these programs help older adults and people with disabilities stay safe, supported, and as independent as possible in their own homes. The discussion also takes a closer look at why Long-Term Care matters locally and clears up some common misconceptions about who qualifies and how the services are used.
Battlefield District Supervisor Chris Yakabouski discussed the county's proposed budget and the financial challenges facing the board. He encouraged residents to attend the March 26 public hearing at Courtland High School or to share their thoughts during Board of Supervisors meetings, noting that public input often influences final decisions. The conversation also touched on the role of data centers. Yakabouski says community engagement is critical as the county makes important funding choices.

David Waldman returns today, because there wasn't enough yesterday! Greg Dworkin returned also, but discovered that there wasn't enough today either, so he stuck around for most of the show! There is so much delicious data to share, most of which pollsters wished that they had a couple of days ago or at least had the foresight to analyze correctly. In hindsight, however, we can see that a bunch of Democrats voted, and not a lot of QAnon MAGAs had their panties bunched this go-round. Instead of conspiracies, voters were motivated by reality. Fewer jobs and bigger bills are being felt everywhere, especially with the MAGA who have noticed that America is not so great again. Not just the economy either. Every statewide office contested went blue. The whole nation has re-woke-ened. From sea to shining sea, assholes are looking for new jobs this week. Running for Democratic office is becoming so fun, everybody's doing it! Every little Podunk and Spotsylvania goes Dem as voters get out and vote. The fate of the free world rests in Zohran Mamdani's hands. That is according to everyone to the right of him, Democrat or Republican, and to the left of him and above and below him, who will now need to move their backbiting-sweet talking over to the Hizzoner's office lobby. Donald K. Trump is going full dotard because of all this. That seems like a fun thing, but it could be a bad thing. Meh, it couldn't get worse… could it? Perhaps someone should give him an award today. Nancy Pelosi is retiring from making history in Washington DC, might make a little more on the other coast.

In 1864, the American Civil War reached a critical juncture with Ulysses S. Grant’s Overland Campaign, including the brutal battles of the Wilderness and Spotsylvania, which claimed over 60,000 casualties, surpassing Gettysburg as the Americas’ deadliest clash. Abraham Lincoln faced a contentious re-election against George B. McClellan, while Confederate General Jubal Early’s troops came within five miles of the White House. Abolitionists pushed for emancipation, and desperate Confederate plots, like the attempt to burn New York City’s hotels, marked the war’s final months, culminating in Lincoln’s assassination by John Wilkes Booth in April 1865. Today’s guest is Scott Ellsworth, author of “Midnight on the Potomac: The Last Year of the Civil War, the Lincoln Assassination, and the Rebirth of America.” We explore how the staggering losses of 1864 shaped Lincoln’s strategy of attrition amid political uncertainty. These include lesser-known moments, like the Washington Arsenal explosion that killed 21 workers and Early’s near-invasion of Washington, D.C., which could have altered the war’s course. We also examines the November 1864 Confederate plot to destabilize New York and the conspiracy behind Lincoln’s assassination, including the unresolved question of Confederate government involvement. Reflecting on the war’s toll—over 620,000 dead and four million African-Americans freed but facing new struggles—Ellsworth illuminates how these events reshaped America’s identity.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Leashes of Valor, a Spotsylvania nonprofit that provides service dogs to post-9/11 veterans, will host its annual fundraising gala, “Tail as Old as Time,” on October 11 at Fawn Lake Country Club. Tickets and sponsorship opportunities are currently available. Founded by veterans, Leashes of Valor is headquartered in Spotsylvania and focuses on addressing the mental health crisis among military veterans, many of whom face PTSD and other service-related conditions after multiple deployments. “Every dog we place changes a life — not just for the veteran, but for their family,” said Jason Haag, founder of Leashes of Valor and a Marine Corps veteran. “Our program provides more than a service dog. It provides hope.” The organization places fully trained service dogs with veterans at no cost. These dogs are trained to help with a range of conditions, including anxiety, night terrors, and hypervigilance. The nonprofit also provides ongoing support after placement to ensure long-term success. Chris Bowers says community support is needed. “This gala is a chance to celebrate our mission and raise the funds we need to reach more veterans,” Bowers said. According to Haag, frequent deployments have placed an increasing burden on military families, contributing to higher rates of suicide, substance abuse, and homelessness among veterans. “We're working to change that trajectory, one dog at a time,” he said. leashesofvalor.org

What happens when religious institutions claim exclusive rights to salvation? The spiritual and historical consequences are far more dangerous than many realize. The American Soul Podcast tackles the troubling phenomenon of denominational gatekeeping, examining a recent statement by a Cardinal claiming, "Only the Catholic Church possesses the fullness of the means of salvation." This bold assertion contradicts the very foundation of Christian belief—that Jesus Christ alone is the path to salvation, with no denomination or institution standing as intermediary.Scripture never mentions specific denominations as pathways to God. Rather, it consistently points to Jesus as the singular hope for humanity. When we read in Matthew 9 how Jesus ate with tax collectors and sinners, declaring "I did not come to call the righteous but sinners," we see his rejection of religious gatekeeping in favor of direct spiritual relationship. The historical consequences of institutional religious power serve as sobering warnings. Drawing from the Book of Martyrs, we examine how religious persecution flourished whenever an institution claimed infallibility and exclusive spiritual authority. This pattern repeats throughout history, whether in religious contexts or political ideologies that demand absolute loyalty. As Americans, we should remember both our spiritual and national foundations. The Great Awakening preacher George Whitefield's words still ring true today: "The door of mercy is not yet shut. There does remain yet a sacrifice for sin, for all that will accept of the Lord Jesus Christ."What's keeping you from turning to Jesus Christ directly? As this episode concludes: there's nothing standing between you and Christ except yourself. No denomination, no human institution can claim to be the exclusive path to salvation when Scripture clearly teaches otherwise.Support the showThe American Soul Podcasthttps://www.buzzsprout.com/1791934/subscribe

Have you seen the new Volvo ad? It is unabashedly pro-life and pro-family and a refreshing change by corporate America to appeal to the “normies,” the men and women who turned the 2024 election for Donald Trump. To win the culture war, this is a step in the right direction. It reinforces the reality that two-parent families with children are not only not “weird,” but are good and desirable. When thirty-two year old Shirley McAvoy didn't show up for her youngest daughter's birthday everyone knew something was wrong. After being unable to reach her, Shirley's estranged husband, Brian, reported her missing to the Pittsfield Police Department in Maine.Initially, investigators found nothing to indicate a crime had been committed and did little other than issue a statewide bolo for Shirley and her car. Thirty-four days later, a massive puddle of blood was discovered in Shirley's home.Friends and neighbors told a strange tale about a man who called himself "Jerry." Jerry moved into Shirley's home just days before her disappearance and gave many different, contrasting stories about his background. He was missing, too.Detectives soon learned that Jerry had been involved in an accident in Shirley's car in Boston the day after she was last seen alive. One month later, the mother of two was found dead in a rural area of Virginia. For detectives, solving the disturbing case appears to hinge entirely on identifying this so-called Jerry.Composite Image of suspect "Jerry"Trace Evidence LinkTree & Social MediaMusic Courtesy of: "Lost Time" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/#truecrime #truecrimepodcast #realcrimes #disappearance #disappeared #missing #unsolved #unsolvedmysteries #evidence #investigation #missingperson #traceevidence #homicide #detective #coldcase #creepy #truecrimestory #truecrimestories #maine #mainetruecrime #maineunsolved #pittsfield #McAvoy #Delcourt #homicide #spotsylvania #shirleymcavoySourcesBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/trace-evidence--3207798/support.
If you asked his coworkers, his family, or his wife, they would have told you that Richard Evonitz was a stand-up guy; a Navy veteran, a hard worker, and a devoted husband who was known by friends and neighbors to lend a hand when something needed to be fixed. Only a few young women knew the truth about him, but sadly found out after it was already too late. That is, until his last victim used her cunning survival skills to stop him from ever committing his heinous acts of depravity against anyone else. These are the crimes of Richard Evonitz, also known as the Spotsylvania Killer, and the stories of Sofia Silva, Kristin Link, Kati Link, and Kara Robinson. Learn more about your ad choices. During the Civil War, densely-packed battle lines made it likely that field generals might be killed in battle. During the Battle of Spotsylvania, Union General John Sedgwick stood away from the front and proudly proclaimed to his fellow officers “They couldn't hit an elephant at this distance.” The next moment, he was shot and killed by a Confederate sharpshooter. Killing the leader always results in confusion for those who follow. In Zechariah 13:7-9, it is not the enemy who kills the leader, but God himself. But what could God seek to gain from putting His own leader to death? Our passage explains how our sovereign God uses even great tragedy to save His people.
