This blogcast explores “Learning Lessons of Prayer and Penance from Our Lady of Lourdes” written by Dana Edwards Szigeti and read by Fatima Monterrubio Cruess. In this blog post, Dana shares some of her insights she learned by attending a virtual pilgrimage to Our Lady of Lourdes, France and how our Lady calls us to prayer and penance. Prayer is transformative and plays a huge part in helping get us through our earthly sufferings. Choosing love helps make sacrifice endurable. St. Bernadette taught us that suffering passes, but having suffered remains eternally. The physical and emotional sacrifices of this world are temporary compared to the glory of everlasting life in heaven with God. St. Bernadette famously said, “One who loves does not notice their trials, or perhaps more accurately, is able to love them. Love without measure.” At first, this not noticing of trials seems idealistic. But then I realized that our trials are made more bearable because of our love for another. I think of how mothers go through physical pain and exhaustion for their newborn babies, or how a father stays up at night with a sick child. I think of how husbands and wives sacrifice individual wants for the needs of each other. I think of how a friend puts their own struggles aside to help another friend going through a deep, rough patch. We can look to Mary and Jesus as examples of how to love while enduring sacrifice. “She spoke to me as one person to another,” said St. Bernadette of Mary. This conversational nature of Mary and St. Bernadette's relationship shows us that we can easily speak to her and ask for her prayerful intercession as our mother. At Mary's appearances to St. Bernadette, she revealed herself to be the Immaculate Conception. By allowing God to forgive us of our sins and conduct his work inside us, we are becoming more “immaculate” witnesses to God in the world. Mary emphasized the need for penance and prayer, not just for ourselves, but for the healing of all. One of the finest translations of St. Bernadette's writings (her diary, etc) has been done by Patricia McEachern. The book is called "A Holy Life: The Writings of St. Bernadette of Lourdes". Hey, friends! You may have noticed that I have booklets available on how to sing the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Sadly, I haven't polished these up for publication. They are still rather inconsistent and at times messy, but they are helpful for pointing you in the right direction. Preparing them for publishing feels like an epic quest beyond my present abilities. While this is a noble goal, maybe a similar yet smaller task might help towards the ultimate end. Maybe I can make a booklet for a smaller Little Office first! The Little Office of the Immaculate Conception shares some similarities and differences. Like the Divine Office, it is arranged by hours and employs similar versicles and collects. On the whole it has a rather different feel, being based around a hymn instead of the Psalms. If you can pick a hymn tune then the hours are pretty much ready to sing. That is, until you get to the last part.Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. The last hour of the day is Completorium or Compline. While the large part of the hour follows the same pattern as the other hours, it ends with a new section called The Commendation or Commendatio. This consists of a hymn followed by the response, Deo gratias, then an Antiphon, Versicle and Response closing with a Collect or Prayer. The first version I recorded only had the hymn of the Commendation, so it was only recently that I began to puzzle over the Antiphon. The other parts can be sung easily with common tunes. Antiphons are little snippets each with their own melody. There are hundreds of them in the Liber Usualis and the Antiphonale Monasticum, but not this particular one.Haec est virga in qua nec nodus originalis, nec cortex actualis culpae fuit. This is the rod wherein was neither the knot of original sin, nor the bark of actual sin. Some research revealed that this particular antiphon can be found in Vespers for the medieval Franciscan feast of the Immaculate Conception, long before the universal feast was established after Our Lady gave her title to St Bernadette at Lourdes. The two manuscripts containing the antiphon date from the 17th and 18th centuries.A beautifully photographed manuscript clearly gave all the antiphons for this feast. The neumes are intelligible even after hundreds of years. I transcribed this piece into “modern” square notes and added it to Gregobase. And here is how it sounds:Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a reader-supported publication. In this episode of the Marian Hour, Fr. Campbell discusses the Marian apparition in Lourdes, France, where the Blessed Mother appeared to a simple young girl of 14, St. Bernadette, 18 times. Fr. Campbell also talks about miracles that occurred instantaneously when ailing people bathed themselves in the spring that Our Lady told St. Bernadette to dig.
Every year, millions of pilgrims from around the world visit the foothills of the French Pyrenees to walk in the footsteps of Saint Bernadette at Lourdes. It's one of the world's busiest Catholic pilgrimage sites with around five million pilgrims visiting each year. It's estimated that over 200 million people have visited the Marian shrine and sanctuary since 1860. Why do they come? It's a common misconception that most pilgrims visit Lourdes to experience a miracle. However, many are searching for strength and guidance in times of difficulty or distress. For many sick pilgrims, Lourdes offers the opportunity to bathe in the healing waters of the spring and to find peace with their prognosis rather than to seek a miraculous cure. They also come to walk in the footsteps of a poor 14 year old girl, named Bernadette Soubirous, to whom the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared in a series of 18 apparitions at a Grotto on the banks of the river Gave between February and July 1858. Hers is a remarkable story that led from suffering and surrender to sainthood. We can take solace and draw closer to the Lord and His Blessed Mother through Bernadette's story. In this audiobook, produced in partnership with the Catholic Truth Society, we listen to the message of St Bernadette - a message that is as clear today as it was in the 19th century. +++ This book, written by Vernon Johnson, was published by the Catholic Truth Society (CTS). The text was revised and updated by Donal Foley in 2008. You can listen to this audiobook version for free. Read by Pierpaolo Finaldi. Duration: 1 hour 18 minutes
The Catholic Herald Podcast: Merely Catholic with Gavin Ashenden
The Rt Rev. Mark Davies, the Bishop of Shrewsbury, talks to Dr Gavin Ashenden about the visit of the relics of St Bernadette of Lourdes to England, Scotland and Wales that runs from Friday September 2nd to Tuesday November 1st. In this 16th episode of the Merely Catholic podcast series for the Catholic Herald, Bishop Davies explains precisely what is understood by a relic. He also observes that down the ages saints have always been great evangelisers who have revealed the raw power of Gospel and the authentic face of the Church. The visit of the relics of St Bernadette, suggests Bishop Davies, could be a key moment for the new evangelisation at time when Christian morality and the sanctity of human life in Britain is relentlessly under attack.
