It was a full house in St Bernadette's school hall last night as the Naenae community turned out in force to show its support for Resene workers calling for a living wage. Krystal Gibbens reports.
Very sad news this afternoon that Bob Jones has passed away. It's not altogether a surprise – he was getting on in age, and he had been feeling unwell and slowing down for at least a couple of years. But still, it is the passing of a great, colourful, larger than life character. I can't remember when I first met Bob, but I've known him for close to twenty years. He was actually the first person I saw at my wedding on my wedding day... because he was leaving. I was late —which frankly is a bride's prerogative— but he was so cross at how late I was that he stormed out of the wedding, bumped into me outside, fortunately turned around and went back in. And then afterwards, he gave me a rundown of the things he enjoyed and didn't enjoy about the wedding, inducing: could've kept the champagne and canapes going for longer and could've skipped the dinner. He gave some pretty unusual life advice. When I was pregnant with my son, we had dinner with Bob one night and he spent a long time telling me that my son would wear me out because boys are energetic, and that if I had a girl next I would probably think there was something wrong with her, and might want to take her to the doctor but there would be nothing wrong with her – boys are just more energetic than girls. He was right of course. Not everyone loves Bob. I know that. He was a polarising character, but he had something that many of us could learn from, and that was a wicked sense of humour. He laughed a lot. He played pranks. He enjoyed mocking things he didn't like. He was incredibly wealthy, but not pretentious – e grew up in a state house in Naenae after all. And he was very clever. Read anything he's written – you'll wish you could write like him. I count myself lucky to have known Bob Jones. He's one of those characters we seemed to have had a lot of in the 70s and 80s but don't seem to make nowadays. As someone else said today: New Zealand is duller without him. We are honored to serve as the emcees for this year's Michigan Parkinson's Foundation Heroes Walk, happening on Saturday October 14 at Frederick Meijer Gardens.Parkinson's is a terrible disease that affects over 1.5 million Americans, and over 35,000 people here in Michigan. Although it is usually diagnosed in people over 60, it can occur in people as young as 20, If you are diagnosed before the age of 50, you are considered early on-set Parkinsons. No one ever wants to be a part of the Parkie club, but if you are diagnosed, the Parkinsons Foundation can provide invaluable resources to help you not just process your diagnosis, but also find a way forward, with support and help. Two teams on Saturday hit very close to home for us at Behind the Mitten. Team SPARK is headed by Amy's beloved cousin Chas Schaner, who has been battling this insidious disease for a number of years now, always with a spark of a smile and a joke to keep things light, even when it seems very dark.Nae Nae's Shakes Rattles and Rollers! is led by the uncontainable Renee Orr, an absolute dynamo and Amy's very best friend since they were just kids, and who was diagnosed at the incredibly young, and absolutely heartbreaking age of 49. Renee has found an incredible network of support, resources, information, and love from the Parkinsons Foundation over the last couple of years, a life-loong during this difficult time. Renee is this year's special Hero honoree, and when you hear her story you'll know why.We hope that you'll consider donating to one of these special teams, or to the Michigan Parkinson Foundation to help them continue to do the good work that they do.Donate here. The Michigan Parkinson Foundation (MPF) is dedicated to people living with Parkinson's Disease (PD). Happy New Year. It's nice to be back after a long summer break during a summer that was both brilliant and awful. When it was beautiful it was very beautiful and when it was horrible it was appalling. The East Coast mutilated not just by the elements but by the slash washed down from the hills. This is not the first time this has happened by any stretch and it has to stop. The industry is well aware of the risk. Like any industry you need to be able to clean up after you. And now the new year welcomes a new Prime Minister. Firstly, the resignation of Jacinda Ardern saw the most incredible outbreak of Jacinda Derangement Syndrome I've ever seen. Fans and acolytes from the left were left wailing and despairing. Truly bereft. Grown men crying. Meanwhile champagne corks were popping in the Koru Lounge, rural pubs filled up and the right wingers felt that all their troubles were over. All of which was a wild over exaggeration of Jacinda Ardern and her acheivements and abilities. For the past 5 years I've been saying that Ms Ardern was not as wonderful as her fans believed but nor as dangerous as her enemies said. But she was becoming a liability to her party. 5 years of mud throwing was sticking. The middle ground of voters were starting to believe the claims that she was a dictator and a control freak. That she was a narcissist ruling an idealogically driven cabal of communists committed to ruining everything about the country right up to changing the name unilaterally. So with a quick sidestep Cindy was replaced by Chippy. And that's an important point. An older generation used Cindy to infantilise her which was part of their misogyny. Hipkins used to hate Chippy but is now at home with it so that's an offensive weapon neutralised. Hipkins is a good call. He's a scrapper. He's got a thicker skin. He's not addicted to always being right. He's prepared to accept and admit he's made a mistake. He's a worker and he seems normal. Like the New Zealanders who vote. Like the New Zealanders who are doing it hard, and they're the people he mentions every time he's near a microphone. I see today on Twirtter that Matthew Hooten said: ‘In 3 days the Labour party rebranded themselves from Grey Lynn to Glendene and Wadestown to Naenae.' And that's a good line. Meanwhile, take note that Chris Hipkins was on ZB this morning unlike the previous Prime Minister. He's prepared to stand his ground. Whether this is enough for Labour to regain the Treasury benches is a matter we'll have to wait and see. But I think they have more chance under Hipkins than Ardern. Hopefully it will be a wakeup call for National, who seemed to be sleep walking to the election. Christopher Luxon makes much of his party having real world experience but he seems to forget how new his troops are, and that Hipkins and Robertson do have real world experience that his Ministers don't. They've been running the shop for the past 5 years and should not be underestimated. It's making for a great election. I'm looking forward to the Hipkins-Luxon debates and the Robertson-Willis debates. And then we'll see who really has the chops to lead a country.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Tommy Murray died suddenly last week in a Naenae gym. He was 54, a father and grandfather who wore a mataora - a full facial moko. His Northland whanau forcibly took his body for burial at his marae. His widow Sara says he was estranged from his family and he wanted to be cremated to be with her. She says her daughters were beaten as they tried to stop his coffin being taken from their home. Hilda Halkyard-Harawira is Tommy Murray's cousin and says the needs of tikanga meant the whānau could not allow him to be cremated. She spoke to RNZ Maori news director Māni Dunlop.
A woman is vowing to fight to get her husband back after his body was forcibly taken from their home in Wellington over the weekend by his whānau, to be taken back to his marae. 54-year-old Tommy Murray died suddenly at a boxing gym last week in Lower Hutt. His wife Sara, who he married in 2008, took him home to their house in Naenae to lie before his cremation, saying that is what he wanted. Māni Dunlop has been covering the story and joins Lisa Owen with the details.
A Wellington woman is vowing to fight after her husband's body was forcibly taken from their home by his whānau, to be buried at his Northland marae. Tommy Murray, who was 54, had a heart problem and died suddenly last week. His wife, Sara Murray, opened the doors of their Naenae home so whānau could join her and her teenage daughters to grieve with his body. Her spokesperson told RNZ's Maori news Director Mani Dunlop that things turned ugly on Sunday night when the Northland whānau lifted Tommy Murray's lidless coffin and took him from the house - twice almost dropping him out. Former MP Shane Jones, from Te Tai Tokerau, spoke to Susie Ferguson about Māori tikanga.

Sara Murray tried to talk to the whānau but they didn't listen because she is Pākehā - though she understands tikanga Māori.
