Debunking the Lourdes Miracles and Other Articles By Joseph McCabe Read by Oberon Michaels Lourdes is a town in south-western France which in 1858 became the site of one of the most famous Marian apparitions. The recipient of the vision, Bernadette Soubirous, was directed to start digging in a cave, and a spring was uncovered. The waters of the spring gained the reputation of possessing healing properties, and subsequently Lourdes has become one of the most popular Catholic pilgrimage sites in the world. In the opening essay of this collection, celebrated skeptic and scholar Joseph McCabe turns his acerbic investigative eye on these events and challenges the validity of many of the healings. This collection also includes three other short essays on other religio-political issues and an article about McCabe by J.V. Nash.

Bernadette Soubirous' feast day is April 16, the anniversary of her death in 1879. The Virgin Mary gave her name to a 14-year old girl near Lourdes, stating: "I am the Immaculate Conception." Lourdes is a town in southwestern France, in the foothills of the Pyrenees Mountains. It’s known for the Sanctuary of Notre-Dame de Lourdes, a major Catholic pilgrimage site. Each year, millions visit the Grotto of Massabielle (Grotto of the Apparitions) where, the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared 18 times (between 11 February and 16 July in 1858) to Saint Bernadette Soubirous (1844-79). In the grotto or cave, pilgrims can drink or bathe in water flowing from a believed to be, miraculous spring. The annual Feast Day of Our Lady of Lourdes was established in 1890 for February 11 by Pope Leo XIII. Ee276. Celebrated annually on April 16 as a solemn feast day, the anniversary of Bernadette Soubirous' death in 1879. The Immaculate Conception’s observance began with a Papal encyclical by Pope Pius IX, when he formally defined the dogma of the Immaculate Conception in 1854. The Immaculate Conception is the dogma that the Virgin Mary was conceived without original sin. This doctrine states that Mary was preserved from the "stain of sin" from the first moment of her conception through a unique grace from God, granted in anticipation of her role as the mother of Jesus. Full Text of Readings Thursday of the Second Week of Easter Lectionary: 270 The Saint of the day is Saint Bernadette Soubirous Saint Bernadette Soubirous' Story Bernadette Soubirous was born in 1844, the first child of an extremely poor miller in the town of Lourdes in southern France. The family was living in the basement of a dilapidated building when on February 11, 1858, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to Bernadette in a cave above the banks of the Gave River near Lourdes. Bernadette, 14 years old, was known as a virtuous girl though a dull student who had not even made her first Holy Communion. In poor health, she had suffered from asthma from an early age. There were 18 appearances in all, the final one occurring on the feast of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, July 16. Although Bernadette's initial reports provoked skepticism, her daily visions of “the Lady” brought great crowds of the curious. The Lady, Bernadette explained, had instructed her to have a chapel built on the spot of the visions. There, the people were to come to wash in and drink of the water of the spring that had welled up from the very spot where Bernadette had been instructed to dig. According to Saint Bernadette Soubirous, the Lady of her visions was a girl of 16 or 17 who wore a white robe with a blue sash. Yellow roses covered her feet, a large rosary was on her right arm. In the vision on March 25 she told Bernadette, “I am the Immaculate Conception.” It was only when the words were explained to her that Bernadette came to realize who the Lady was. Few visions have ever undergone the scrutiny that these appearances of the Immaculate Virgin were subject to. Lourdes became one of the most popular Marian shrines in the world, attracting millions of visitors. Miracles were reported at the shrine and in the waters of the spring. After thorough investigation, Church authorities confirmed the authenticity of the apparitions in 1862. During her life, Saint Bernadette Soubirous suffered much. She was hounded by the public as well as by civic officials until at last she was protected in a convent of nuns. Five years later, she petitioned to enter the Sisters of Notre Dame of Nevers. After a period of illness she was able to make the journey from Lourdes and enter the novitiate. But within four months of her arrival she was given the last rites of the Church and allowed to profess her vows. She recovered enough to become infirmarian and then sacristan, but chronic health problems persisted. She died on April 16, 1879, at the age of 35. Bernadette Soubirous was canonized in 1933. Reflection Millions of people have come to the spring Bernadette uncovered for healing of body and spirit, but she found no relief from ill health there. Saint Bernadette Soubirous moved through life, guided only by blind faith in things she did not understand—as we all must do from time to time.Saint of the Day, Copyright Franciscan Media

Glaubst Du an Wunder? Juli an weiteren siebzehn Tagen.
A meditation preached by Fr. Eric Nicolai at Kintore College in Toronto, on February 11, 2026, the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes. The Lord speaks today about the kind of openness to God's love we must have in the events of our life. He promises real resilience for us if we see his hand in our life.Mark 7:14-23: At that time: Jesus called the people to him again and said to them, ‘Hear me, all of you, and understand: There is nothing outside a person that by going into him can defile him, but the things that come out of a person are what defile him.'What truly wounds us spiritually is not what happens to us, but what we consent to interiorly. We might easily blame external circumstances: our environment, other people, temptations, past wounds. Our growth is not about managing behaviour, but educating the heart: learning to recognize interior movements and choosing which ones to welcome, which ones to reject. It was present in the heart of Bernadette Soubirous, born in January 9, 1844, in the foothills of the Pyrenees in southern France, in Lourdes. Here is the story.

Each year, millions visit the Grotto of Massabielle (Grotto of the Apparitions) where, the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared 18 times (between 11 February and 16 July in 1858) to Saint Bernadette Soubirous. In the grotto or cave, pilgrims can drink or bathe in water flowing from a believed to be, miraculous spring. The annual Feast Day of Our Lady of Lourdes was established in 1890 for February 11 by Pope Leo XIII. Full Text of Readings Wednesday of the Fifth Week in Ordinary Time Lectionary: 331 The Saint of the day is Our Lady of Lourdes The Story of Our Lady of Lourdes On December 8, 1854, Pope Pius IX proclaimed the dogma of the Immaculate Conception in the apostolic constitution Ineffabilis Deus. A little more than three years later, on February 11, 1858, a young lady appeared to Bernadette Soubirous. This began a series of visions. During the apparition on March 25, the lady identified herself with the words: “I am the Immaculate Conception.” Bernadette was a sickly child of poor parents. Their practice of the Catholic faith was scarcely more than lukewarm. Bernadette could pray the Our Father, the Hail Mary and the Creed. She also knew the prayer of the Miraculous Medal: “O Mary conceived without sin.” During interrogations Bernadette gave an account of what she saw. It was “something white in the shape of a girl.” She used the word aquero, a dialect term meaning “this thing.” It was “a pretty young girl with a rosary over her arm.” Her white robe was encircled by a blue girdle. She wore a white veil. There was a yellow rose on each foot. A rosary was in her hand. Bernadette was also impressed by the fact that the lady did not use the informal form of address (tu), but the polite form (vous). The humble virgin appeared to a humble girl and treated her with dignity. Through that humble girl, Mary revitalized and continues to revitalize the faith of millions of people. People began to flock to Lourdes from other parts of France and from all over the world. In 1862 Church authorities confirmed the authenticity of the apparitions and authorized the cult of Our Lady of Lourdes for the diocese. The Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes became worldwide in 1907. Reflection Lourdes has become a place of pilgrimage and healing, but even more of faith. Church authorities have recognized over 60 miraculous cures, although there have probably been many more. To people of faith this is not surprising. It is a continuation of Jesus' healing miracles—now performed at the intercession of his mother. Some would say that the greater miracles are hidden. Many who visit Lourdes return home with renewed faith and a readiness to serve God in their needy brothers and sisters. There still may be people who doubt the apparitions of Lourdes. Perhaps the best that can be said to them are the words that introduce the film The Song of Bernadette: “For those who believe in God, no explanation is necessary. For those who do not believe, no explanation is possible.”Saint of the Day, Copyright Franciscan Media

Full Text of ReadingsWednesday of Holy Week Lectionary: 259The Saint of the day is Saint Bernadette SoubirousSaint Bernadette Soubirous' Story Bernadette Soubirous was born in 1844, the first child of an extremely poor miller in the town of Lourdes in southern France. According to Bernadette, the Lady of her visions was a girl of 16 or 17 who wore a white robe with a blue sash. During her life, Bernadette suffered much. Bernadette moved through life, guided only by blind faith in things she did not understand—as we all must do from time to time. Learn more about Saint Bernadette! Episode 212 it is - we're cruising into 1858 but wait! The sounds of gunfire! Yes, it's that old South African tune, war, set to the music of the guns. Our society is steeped in action, movement, confrontation. This is not a place for the insipid, the weak, the fearful. Whatever our belief system or our personal politics, what cannot be disputed is that the country and our ways are those of the warrior. This is an uncomfortable truth for metropolitans who are more used to single latte's than sling shots. Globally, 1858 is full of momentous events and incidents. It was the year in which Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace present their papers on evolution by natural selection in London. In India, a peace treaty ends the Indian Rebellion and later in the year the British parliament passes the Government of India Act. This transfers the territories of the British East India Company and their administration to the Direct Rule of the British Crown. The great stink in London led parliament to a bill to create modern sewerage system after the dreadful odours wafting about the British capital during the summer. Another young girl dreams up appiritions in the mode of Nongqawuse who dreamed up the cattle Killings - this time its Bernadette Soubirous who claims she saw several appritions appeared before her in the southern French town of Lourdes. Without going into too many gory details, around Ash Wednesday a woman appeared before her inside a grotto and after three appearances over time, began to talk. By October, the government had shut down the grotto there were so many people pitching up to take part in what was called a miracle. A miracle only she could see. Strange how these stories in this period repeated themselves. Back in Africa, David Livingstones six-year long second Zambezi expedition arrived on the Indian Ocean coast. Which is an important moment because inland, the tension between the Boers of the Free State and King Moshoeshoe of Basutoland had been exacerbated. A drought was reported in the region in 1858 which exacerbated everything. The Volksraad met in February 1858. They were faced with a request for help to deal with Posholi signed by a field-cornet and sixty five other burghers in the disputed area.Later in February 1858 Smithfield Landdrost Jacobus Sauer sent more news from the badlands - Posholi was, in his words, parading through Smithfield district with warriors and when accosted, said he was on a hunting expedition. When the Commando eventually gathered, there were one thousand armed and mounted Boers. Which was exactly ten percent the size of the Basotho force of ten thousand, all mounted with at least five hundred firearms. Back at the Thaba Bosiu ranch, Moshoeshoe was a sea of calm. It was now war and the king along with the territorial chiefs and councillors, put their plans into motion. They'd faced this kind of attack before, the British had raided them in 1852 if you recall. That had ended in disaster for the empire, so Moshoeshoe was not rattled by the latest assault on his independence.
Our Lady of Lourdes Hello St. Mary Magdalene, First, I want to share with you all a wonderful opportunity to engage in fellowship. On Sunday February 23rd from 1-3:30 pm our Family Faith Formation staff and volunteers are hosting a "Children's Outdoor Fun Day." We'll have food trucks, drink carts, face painting and many other activities for everyone! See you there. Second, our annual Charity and Development Appeal (CDA) has begun. This is our diocese's annual appeal to support charitable works throughout our diocese including (but not limited to) supporting the education and formation of our seminarians, future priests for the Diocese of Phoenix. Thank you all for your generosity to the CDA. You can learn more about the CDA here: https://dphx.org/cda/ Lastly, we celebrated earlier in February two pretty cool saint days, at least for me, Our Lady of Lourdes and St. Bernadette Soubirous- the visionary of Lourdes. This was the Marian apparition that sparked in me a deeper desire and love of Mary and Marian devotions. I share more about it in the video, no spoilers here! God bless, Fr. Full Text of ReadingsTuesday of the Fifth Week in Ordinary Time Lectionary: 330The Saint of the day is Our Lady of LourdesThe Story of Our Lady of Lourdes On December 8, 1854, Pope Pius IX proclaimed the dogma of the Immaculate Conception in the apostolic constitution Ineffabilis Deus. For those who do not believe, no explanation is possible.” Our Lady of Lourdes is the Patron Saint of: Relief from physical ills Enjoy this meditation on Lourdes! Full Text of ReadingsMonday of the Twenty-eighth Week in Ordinary Time Lectionary: 467The Saint of the day is Blessed Carlo AcutisBlessed Carlo Acutis’ Story Born in London and raised in Milan, Carlo's wealthy parents were not particularly religious. Upon receiving his first communion at age seven, Carlo became a frequent communicant, making a point of praying before the tabernacle before or after every Mass. In addition to Francis of Assisi, Carlo took several of the younger saints as his models, including Bernadette Soubirous, Jacinta and Francisco Marto, and Dominic Savio. At school Carlo tried to comfort friends whose parents were undergoing divorce, as well as stepping in to defend disabled students from bullies. After school hours he volunteered his time with the city’s homeless and destitute. Considered a computer geek by some, Carlo spent four years creating a website dedicated to cataloguing every reported Eucharistic miracle around the world. He also enjoyed films, comics, soccer, and playing popular video games. Diagnosed with leukemia, Carlo offered his sufferings to God for the intentions of the sitting pope—Benedict XVI—and the entire Church. His longtime desire to visit as many sites of Eucharistic miracles as possible was cut short by his illness. Carlo died in 2006 and was beatified in 2020. As he had wished, Carlo was buried in Assisi at St. Mary Major's “Chapel of the Stripping”, where Francis had returned his clothes to his father and began a more radical following of the Gospel. Among the thousands present for Carlo's beatification at Assisi's Basilica of St. Francis were many of his childhood friends. Presiding at the beatification service, Cardinal Agostino Vallini praised Carlo as an example of how young people can use technology to spread the Gospel “to reach as many people as possible and help them know the beauty of friendship with the Lord.” His liturgical feast is celebrated on October 12. Reflection Carlo Acutis did not strive to become famous but rather to cooperate as generously as possible with God's grace. That journey brought him many experiences, but they were all united by a burning desire to serve God and others as generously as possible. Saint of the Day, Copyright Franciscan Media

Full Text of ReadingsTuesday of the Third Week of Easter Lectionary: 274The Saint of the day is Saint Bernadette SoubirousSaint Bernadette Soubirous' Story Bernadette Soubirous was born in 1844, the first child of an extremely poor miller in the town of Lourdes in southern France. According to Bernadette, the Lady of her visions was a girl of 16 or 17 who wore a white robe with a blue sash. During her life, Bernadette suffered much. Bernadette moved through life, guided only by blind faith in things she did not understand—as we all must do from time to time. Learn more about Saint Bernadette!
