‘Skinny jabs': how uninformed consent has delivered a false promise - ANH Audible Article by ANH International
America is a deeply spiritual nation. Over 70% of us say that we feel spiritual in some way. But – at the same time – we're getting less religious. So for people who are spiritual-but-not-religious – what's replacing organized religion? What do they believe – and where does that show up in their day-to-day lives? In our new series called Losing My Religion, It's Been a Minute is going to find out. This week, we're getting into wellness. It's a global industry worth 6 trillion dollars that's starting to encompass all kinds of things – including spirituality: from the spirituality of wellness practices like yoga and reiki, to treating wellness itself like a religion. Brittany is joined by Alyssa Bereznak, wellness editor for the LA Times, and Rina Raphael, author of the book The Gospel of Wellness: Gyms, Gurus, Goop, and the False Promise of Self-Care, to get into what people get out of a wellness-based spiritualism.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy
Earlier this month, Lithuania's unprecedented withdrawal from the Convention on Cluster Munitions (CCM) took effect. Meanwhile, several states are openly questioning their continued adherence to other humanitarian treaties, including the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention (APMBC). These developments take place amid heightened international tensions and mounting security concerns, both in Europe and globally. They come at a time when respect for fundamental humanitarian norms is shockingly insufficient, as the immense devastation in ongoing conflicts demonstrates. In this post, ICRC Chief Legal Officer Cordula Droege and ICRC Legal Adviser Maya Brehm caution that recent challenges to the APMBC mirror broader threats to the life-saving protections of international humanitarian law (IHL). They argue that justifications for using anti-personnel mines (APM) tend to be divorced from battlefield realities and overlook the appalling impacts of these treacherous weapons. The authors also show how efforts to circumvent or abandon the APMBC challenge fundamental precepts of IHL and undermine the international rule of law. The post concludes with a call to reinforce humanitarian norms as essential safeguards for upholding humanity in war.

How did Chile's economic experiment reshape global economic thinking, and what can it teach us about the future of neoliberalism and populism in Latin America and beyond?Sebastián Edwards is a professor of international economics at UCLA and writes about Latin American history, economics, and politics. His books include Left Behind: Latin America and the False Promise of Populism, American Default: The Untold Story of FDR, the Supreme Court, and the Battle over Gold, and most recently The Chile Project: The Story of the Chicago Boys and the Downfall of Neoliberalism.Sebastián and Greg chat about the remarkable economic transformation in Chile over the last seven decades, the roots of neoliberalism and its global implications, the contemporary challenges facing Argentina, and what lessons can be gleaned from historical economic events like the U.S.'s default during the FDR era. *unSILOed Podcast is produced by University FM.*Show Links:Recommended Resources:Augusto PinochetMilton FriedmanPaul SamuelsonTed SchultzRobert MundellArnold HarbergerJorge AlessandriJosé PiñeraGuest Profile:Faculty Profile at UCLAProfessional WebsiteHis Work:The Chile Project: The Story of the Chicago Boys and the Downfall of NeoliberalismAmerican Default: The Untold Story of FDR, the Supreme Court, and the Battle over GoldLeft Behind: Latin America and the False Promise of PopulismEpisode Quotes:Why could the U.S. justify a default while Argentina couldn't?48:11: I think that the notion of excusable default is important. If there is an act of God, and the Great Depression was thought to be, in part at least, an act of God, that was one element. The other one is that I think the Supreme Court rulings were very detailed and pedagogical, and they explained that aspect of the justifiable default in a clear way. And the third one is that the devaluation was very large, from $20.67 to $35. So, the problem with Latin America is that most devaluation crises are very timid. On Chile's horizontal inequality56:01: Chile is one of the most unequal countries in terms of income, but also it's very segregated. [56:37] So, there is this horizontal inequality that I think is also important, and as the country developed and people got out of poverty, being treated in a disrespectful way by whiter citizens—there's also a racial component, but in Chile, it's not acknowledged all the time—but being treated without respect is not acceptable anymore. People get resentful, right? So, I think that all of that added to this quite unstable cocktail. How inequality and slow growth created Chile's deadly cocktail04:11: When you combine inequality with slower growth, then you have a really deadly cocktail. And that happened after 2014, and it made the criticism higher. And the third point is that there were some implicit promises that the supporters of the model made that did not happen. And that's mostly related to pensions—the fully privately run (not anymore, but originally) pension system based on individual savings accounts. The idea was that if things worked the way people thought they were going to work, workers would get a rate of replacement of about 70 to 80 percent of their income. It turns out they get about 25 percent instead of 70 or 75 percent, and people feel betrayed.

The financial industry pushes a conventional narrative that retiring at 65 is the ultimate goal, perpetuating a 20th-century model of wealth building that fails to serve modern realities. After working with hundreds of clients, we've learned there's a fundamental problem with traditional retirement planning - it's built on unpredictable assumptions about taxes, inflation, and market performance. In today's episode, we dive deep into why the standard retirement planning model is broken and why we need to rethink our entire approach to building wealth. We explore how the current system encourages us to defer use of our capital while saving in accounts we can't access for decades. Through real examples and historical context, we discuss why focusing on generational wealth transfer may be a better approach than traditional retirement planning. We challenge the basic assumptions of retirement planning, examining why the concept of retirement itself needs to be reimagined, and how Biblical principles of wealth creation and legacy can guide us toward a more sustainable future. Our conversation reveals why creating value throughout life might be better than planning for inactivity. The False Promise of Retirement Age: The concept of retiring at 65 is a modern construct with no historical or Biblical basis. Social Security has created artificial incentives around retirement timing, while Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) force retirees to spend down their wealth rather than preserve it. The Unpredictable Future Problem: Traditional financial planning requires making multiple assumptions about an unpredictable future. Tax rates, inflation, market performance, and lifespan are all variables that can dramatically impact planning. The standard model assumes you'll spend less in retirement, which is not an assumption that can be responsibly made. The Inflation Reality Challenge: In 1988, $20,000 bought a nice car and $90,000 bought a decent house. Today those numbers have multiplied several times over. Future costs are likely to increase exponentially, not linearly, making traditional planning models obsolete. Biblical Wealth Building: Focus should be on building sustainable wealth that can be passed down, following the biblical principle of leaving an inheritance to children's children. Creating value throughout life, rather than planning for inactivity, aligns with biblical commands of dominion and multiplication. ▶️ Chapters 00:00 Introduction & Current Events 02:00 The Problem with Traditional Financial Planning 05:00 Questioning Retirement Age Assumptions 15:00 The Reality of Asset Price Inflation 25:00 Biblical Perspective on Wealth & Legacy 35:00 Tax Implications & RMDs 40:00 Historical Context of Inflation 45:00 Closing Got Questions? In this episode, Brandon Lee, and Carson Heady are joined by Andy Paul, a renowned sales strategist and the author of Sell Without Selling Out. With decades of experience across tech and startup sales, Andy shares actionable insights on why the sales industry needs to move away from outdated approaches and focus on buyer-centric practices. The False Promise of Sales Tools:Andy discusses the misplaced focus on sales tools that prioritize quantity over meaningful engagement. He highlights how this approach has led to declining win rates across industries, where many companies accept mediocrity instead of striving for consistent success.Shifting the Sales Narrative:Successful selling isn't about pitching, pushing, or persuading—it's about helping buyers make decisions that address their needs and challenges.Andy urges sellers to move beyond “discovery calls” and instead help buyers define their goals, identify opportunities, and envision results. The Four Pillars of Buyer Progress:Sellers should focus on ensuring every interaction helps the buyer move forward. Andy outlines four questions to keep sellers on track:What does the buyer need from us now?How will we provide this help? How does this assistance address their concerns? What steps will they take next as a result?Fostering a Culture of Success:Andy criticizes the normalization of low win rates in many sales cultures, calling it a “culture of losing.”He stresses the importance of instilling confidence in sellers to aim higher, make smarter choices, and focus on winning more often than losing.Building Authentic Connections Online:Andy emphasizes the importance of sellers and leaders building trust through genuine, personalized content.Buyers want to engage with professionals who demonstrate expertise and provide insights before a sales meeting even begins.Andy Paul's thought-provoking perspective on modern sales challenges the status quo, encouraging sellers to focus on their customers' success rather than simply pushing products. By fostering genuine relationships and focusing on progress-driven interactions, sales teams can elevate their effectiveness and create meaningful outcomes for buyers. As we stare down a Babylonian and Canaanite-like ritual sacrifice of children and red heifers, the Abrahamic Death Cult of Judaism, Islam, and even [Cannibalistic] Evangelical Christianity are anticipating a "return" or a conjuring of a Daemon, a Jinn, but they are convincing the Christians that this EVIL will actually be their Messiah. As illogical as all this is and as dangerous as it is, the real issue is what happens next. The Bible written by mystery school adepts, wizards and liars, known as the Old Testament or Tanakh isn't the only book at play. To mind control world Christianity they (world leader puppets of the World Bank) are going to deliver the Armageddon that John had described. Now is the time to learn from the positive examples of true human nature these descendents of Khazars, Turks, Mongols, and Phoenicians don't want us to know about. Truth is the Path to deprogramming, and to a noble awakening.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/ba-al-busters-broadcast--5100262/support.

You can help me cover licensing, hosting, streaming, editing, and royalty fees by visiting this PayPal link right here.Dante the pilgrim and (shockingly!) Virgil have made it to the first terrace of Purgatory proper, although they (and we?) are still not sure exactly what's going on. All we know is that the terrace has gorgeous carvings in the white marble.Join me, Mark Scarbrough, as we look at the first of these carvings that will help us understand the penance ahead--and more importantly, help us understand Dante's theory of art, developed over the central cantos of PURGATORIO.Here are the segments for this episode of WALKING WITH DANTE:[01:18] My English translation of the passage: PURGATORIO, Canto X, lines 28 - 45. If you'd like to read along or drop a comment to continue the conversation, please go to my website, markscarbrough.com.[03:18] Who was Polykleitos? What does Dante know of him? And how does this artist relate to "nature," the "child" of God.[06:13] The first image in the marble is revealed through periphrasis, despite its inherent realism.[11:24] "Ave" is an inversion of "Eva"--or Eve, from the garden of Eden. The fall in Genesis and the consequence of death lie at the bottom of this passage.[14:42] Dante appears to favor very realistic art.[15:50] The art here is rather spare--or at least sparely described.[17:03] Dante appears to favor didactic (or moral) art.[17:46] Dante's theory of art is that creativity builds off what's come before.[22:30] To put "historical" matter in an imaginative space is to compromise the historicity of the matter.[25:57] The unknowable is embellished by art, a most human gesture.[28:38] Rereading the passage: PURGATORIO, Canto X, lines 28 - 45.

Coco Krumme traces the fascinating history of optimization from its roots in America's founding principles, to its dominance as the driving principle of our modern world. Optimized models underlie everything and are deeply embedded in the technologies and assumptions that have come to comprise not only our material reality, but what we make of it. How did a mathematical concept take on such outsized cultural shape? Krumme's work in scientific computation made her aware of optimization's overreach, where she observed that streamlined systems are less resilient and more at risk of failure. They limit our options and narrow our perspectives. Optimal Illusions exposes the sizable bargains we have made in the name of optimization and asks us to consider what comes next.

Ralph is joined by M.V. Ramana, professor at the “School of Public Policy and Global Affairs, University of British Columbia,” to lay out the false promise of small nuclear reactors, which still carry the risk of accidents, still produce waste, still produce plutonium for the weapons industry and are still economically noncompetitive with wind and solar. Plus, in an interview recorded before the tragic wildfires in Maui we welcome back citizen activist and organizer, Paul Deslauriers, to break down how his progressive group was able to take over the governance of Maui County and how with a little “Common Sense” you can do the same.M.V. Ramana is the Simons Chair in Disarmament, Global and Human Security and a professor at the School of Public Policy and Global Affairs, University of British Columbia. Professor Ramana is the author of The Power of Promise: Examining Nuclear Energy in India, and is a member of the International Panel on Fissile Materials, the International Nuclear Risk Assessment Group, and the team that produces the annual World Nuclear Industry Status Report. It seems inconceivable to me that anybody who has any sense of history would think about nuclear power— either the fission version or the hypothetical future nuclear fusion version— as an environmentally sustainable source of electricity.Professor MV RamanaWhat we are lacking in climate change today—simply because we've been so late in trying to act on it—is the urgency. The IPCC puts out report after report saying how high emissions are, how rapidly it has to be decreased if we have even a fighting chance of meeting a 1.5℃ target. And by putting off this kind of action, those calls are becoming more and more desperate. And I think that desperation is probably what's driving some of these groups to say, “Well, you know, let's make friends with everybody, and so on, and so forth.” But the challenge there is that every dollar we spend on nuclear power is a dollar that's not spent on renewables, on energy efficiency, on other ways of trying to deal with [the climate crisis.]Professor MV RamanaAs I've said on prior programs— nuclear power today is unneeded, unsafe, uninsurable, uncompetitive, irresponsible, very secretive, and not willing to suffer the verdicts of the marketplace.Ralph NaderPaul Deslauriers is a grassroots organizer, who has consulted over two hundred organizations involving mergers, restructuring, work process flows, teamwork, management coaching, and asset management. The work involved diverse groups such as the Alaskan Inuit, Icelandic communities. In 2002 Mr. Deslauriers became a full-time activist, coordinating nearly three hundred grassroots groups focused on government system change. He has written a number of guidebooks on organizing including Seven Steps to Reclaim Democracy: An Empowering Guide For Systemic Change, Reclaim Paradise: RESET for the Common Good, and Common Sense: How we are Reclaiming Democracy and Resetting for the Common Good. When you have a core team that is really dedicated in trying to bring about systemic change, and you have the foundation that you need, then you can really develop and grow this without a lot of divisiveness.Paul DeslauriersWhen you have volunteers, you have to have the right motivation, the right structure, the right training so that you can work cohesively and collaboratively together. And that's so crucial for anyone who wants to start a similar group.Paul Deslauriers Get full access to Ralph Nader Radio Hour at www.ralphnaderradiohour.com/subscribe
