Friends of the Rosary, Every August, we honor the two martyrs of Auschwitz: St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross and St. Maximilian Kolbe. We need to pray hard that we and our world don't return to the inhumanity of violence and war. The social acceptance of euthanasia and abortion puts us on the wrong track. Today, August 9, we celebrate the memorial of St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross (1891-1942), Virgin and martyr, also known as St. Edith Stein. Born into a prominent Jewish family in Breslau (now Wroclaw, Poland), she became a brilliant philosopher, a PhD, a teacher and lecturer at major universities in Germany, and a prolific writer. Captivated by the autobiography and the writings of Teresa of Avila, she converted to Catholicism and entered the Discalced Carmelites in 1933 in Echt, Netherlands. She was arrested by the Nazis when they occupied this country, along with all Catholics of Jewish extraction. Teresa Benedicta and her sister Rosa, also a Catholic, were transported on a cattle train to the death camp of Auschwitz. She died in a gas chamber in Auschwitz on August 9, 1942.Pope John Paul II beatified her in 1987 and canonized in 1998. Ave Maria!Jesus, I Trust In You!St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, Pray for Us! Come, Holy Spirit, come! To Jesus through Mary! + Mikel Amigot | RosaryNetwork.com, New York • August 9, 2024, Today's Rosary on YouTube | Daily broadcast at 7:30 pm ET

Friends of the Rosary: Today, the Universal Church celebrates the Memorial of St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross (1891-1942), also known as St. Edith Stein. She was born of Jewish parents in 1891 in Breslau (now Wroclaw, Poland), becoming an influential and brilliant philosopher following her extensive studies at major German universities. Edith Stein was captivated by reading the autobiography of Teresa of Avila. She would imitate Teresa by becoming a Discalced Carmelite, taking the name Teresa Benedicta of the Cross. After her conversion to Catholicism, she became a major force in German intellectual life. She was arrested by the Nazi regime in 1942 when she was living in a Carmelite monastery in Echt, Netherlands. Wednesday of the Eighteenth Week in Ordinary Time Memorial of St Teresa Benedicta of the Cross Matthew 15:21-28 Jesus left Gennesaret and withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon. Then out came a Canaanite woman from that district and started shouting, ‘Sir, Son of David, take pity on me. My daughter is tormented by a devil.' But he answered her not a word. And his disciples went and pleaded with him. ‘Give her what she wants,' they said ‘because she is shouting after us.' He said in reply, ‘I was sent only to the lost sheep of the House of Israel.' But the woman had come up and was kneeling at his feet. ‘Lord,' she said ‘help me.' He replied, ‘It is not fair to take the children's food and throw it to the house-dogs.' She retorted, ‘Ah yes, sir; but even house-dogs can eat the scraps that fall from their master's table.' Then Jesus answered her, ‘Woman, you have great faith. Let your wish be granted.' And from that moment her daughter was well again.

He is disentangling her from the activity of her faculties. Probably she would have been able to acquire much through this, her own activity, but never as completely, perfectly, and securely as she does now since God takes her by the hand. He is leading her in the darkness… by ways that she herself, in the happiest of wanderings while using her own eyes and feet, would never have succeeded in finding. If we accept that in faith, and if we accept the whole Christ in faith-filled surrender, which means, however, that we choose and walk the path of the imitation of Christ, then he will lead us “through his Passion and cross to the glory of his Resurrection.” This is exactly what is experienced in contemplation: passing through the expiatory flames to the bliss of the union of love. Then the rest of the day can take its course, under the same effort and strain, perhaps, but in peace. And when night looks back and you see how fragmentary everything has been, and how much you planned that has gone undone, and all the reasons you have to be embarrassed and ashamed: just take everything exactly as it is, put it in God's hands and leave it to Him – really rest – and start the next day as a new life. Edith Stein was a German Jewess who descended to the intellectual heights of atheism, was converted to Roman Catholicism and as a Discalced Carmelite nun ascended to Mount Carmel to the crystal peaks of mysticism. Her life on earth ended in the gas chambers of a Nazi concentration camp – which she entered unresisting as an oblation for her race. Spiritually a giant, in body she was small and frail and insignificant: at first meeting she often disappointed those who had known her only by her fame as a major contemporary philosopher. She will also be known as a very great Discalced Carmelite, but most of all, perhaps, she will be known as a Saint for converts. Listen to this audiobook for free. Read by Monica Nash. Friends of the Rosary: We pray today's Rosary from Roncesvalles, Navarre, the main entry point of the Way of St. James in Spain. In the month of August we celebrate two martyrs of Auschwitz, St. Maximilian Kolbe and St. Teresa Benedicta. Today is the Memorial Day of St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, also known as St. Edith Stein. Born into a prominent Jewish family in Breslau (now Wroclaw, Poland), she was a brilliant philosopher, university teacher, and major force in German intellectual life. Edith Stein was captivated by reading the autobiography of Teresa of Avila. Later she'd imitate Teresa by becoming a Carmelite Discalced. In 1942, she was arrested by the Nazi regime, along with all Catholics of Jewish extraction and transported by cattle train to the death camp of Auschwitz. Teresa Benedicta and her sister Rosa, also a Catholic, died in a gas chamber in Auschwitz on August 9, 1942. Pope John Paul II beatified Teresa Benedicta in 1987 and canonized her in 1998. Ave Maria! So he called a little child to him and set the child in front of them. Then he said, ‘I tell you solemnly, unless you change and become like little children you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. And so, the one who makes himself as little as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. ‘Anyone who welcomes a little child like this in my name welcomes me. ‘See that you never despise any of these little ones, for I tell you that their angels in heaven are continually in the presence of my Father in heaven. ‘Tell me. Suppose a man has a hundred sheep and one of them strays; will he not leave the ninety-nine on the hillside and go in search of the stray? I tell you solemnly, if he finds it, it gives him more joy than do the ninety-nine that did not stray at all. Similarly, it is never the will of your Father in heaven that one of these little ones should be lost.'

Monday of the Nineteenth Week in Ordinary Time Memorial of St Teresa Benedicta of the Cross Matthew 17:22-27 One day when they were together in Galilee, Jesus said to his disciples, ‘The Son of Man is going to be handed over into the power of men; they will put him to death, and on the third day he will be raised to life again.' And a great sadness came over them. When they reached Capernaum, the collectors of the half-shekel came to Peter and said, ‘Does your master not pay the half-shekel?' ‘Oh yes' he replied, and went into the house. But before he could speak, Jesus said, ‘Simon, what is your opinion? From whom do the kings of the earth take toll or tribute? From their sons or from foreigners?' And when he replied, ‘From foreigners', Jesus said, ‘Well then, the sons are exempt. However, so as not to offend these people, go to the lake and cast a hook; take the first fish that bites, open its mouth and there you will find a shekel; take it and give it to them for me and for you.'

Matthe 25:1-13 Jesus told his disciples this parable: "The Kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish and five were wise. The foolish ones, when taking their lamps, brought no oil with them, but the wise brought flasks of oil with their lamps. Since the bridegroom was long delayed, they all became drowsy and fell asleep. At midnight, there was a cry, 'Behold, the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!' Then all those virgins got up and trimmed their lamps. The foolish ones said to the wise, 'Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.' But the wise ones replied, 'No, for there may not be enough for us and you. Go instead to the merchants and buy some for yourselves.' While they went off to buy it, the bridegroom came and those who were ready went into the wedding feast with him. Then the door was locked. Afterwards the other virgins came and said, 'Lord, Lord, open the door for us!' But he said in reply, 'Amen, I say to you, I do not know you.' Therefore, stay awake, for you know neither the day nor the hour."

Words Have Power In this episode we talk about how words have incredible power to either bless or curse, to build up or tear down. We talk about how social media can be a place of connection, but also a place where we quickly forget to treat people with dignity. The truth that our words have power to restore, heal, be prophetic is something that can challenge us to be more discerning about how we speak and take the lead by being people who bless others. Sister Miriam’s one thing - A gift of a handmade journal made by Magdelena. Thank you so much!   Michelle’s one thing - The Steubenville Encounter Conference in Dallas   Heather’s one thing - The podcast “Every Knee Shall Bow” on the Ascension website    Discussion questions:     What struck you from the podcast? When have you witnessed the desire to be right as more important than caring for and respecting another person? Is this something you have struggled with? What would it look like if we all started intentionally offering life giving words to those around us instead of criticism, negative humor, and harshness? How might God be calling you to speak goodness and blessing to someone in your life?   Journal Questions: What type of patterns have you gotten into with not using your words to bring life? Is the Holy Spirit asking you to go back and ask forgiveness from someone who you have hurt with your words? Take time to reflect on how you speak to others, your tone and your words. How do you think other people feel when you speak to them?   Quote to Ponder: “Do not accept anything as truth that lacks love and do not accept anything as love that lacks truth.  One without the other is a destructive lie” - St Teresa Benedicta of the Cross   Scripture for Lectio Divina - Proverbs 16:24 “Pleasant words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the body.”
