Yep, it is just us this week. Shirley will be on with us in a couple of weeks, but we needed to reschedule. It was us, not her. and we are thankful that she was willing to be flexible.Mike started out with his reading and it was about learning. Learning from our past, learning how to be decent people, understanding others and just being a decent human being. It was a good conversation. We chatted about getting tased, meetings, fate, the Fourth Step, being accountable, character, the beginner's mind and opportunities. We also came across an article that talked about cleaning up after ourselves at a restaurant, and the characteristics that they discussed could have been written for recovery. It was very interesting.Once again, Shirley will join us in 2 weeks! Enjoy the episode.Visit usPodcast www.sobernotmature.comStore www.sobernotmatureshop.comHobo www.themoderndayhobo.com

Too often, this crucial step gets misunderstood or misused. We talk about how some sponsors—without meaning to—slip into the role of therapist, crossing lines that can actually hurt more than help. We unpack why this step is not about blame or shame, but rather about truth, clarity, and freedom. We also discuss the importance of working the 12 steps with someone who truly understands the spiritual foundation of the program, not just someone going through the motions. Over the last 50+ years, the 12-step world has changed—and in some ways, the original message has gotten diluted. We get honest about what's working, what isn't, and how to get back to the basics that actually lead to long-term sobriety. This episode is sponsored by SoberLink, an app/breathalyzer device designed to help you stay connected and accountable throughout your recovery journey. If you're in recovery, working with a sponsor, or even sponsoring someone yourself—this episode will challenge you to go deeper and get real about what this step is all about.

The hosts also highlight the need for sponsors to guide sponsees through the Fourth Step and encourage them to rely on a higher power for character defects removal. In this conversation, the hosts discuss the nature of fear and the importance of focusing on the truth rather than false evidence. They emphasize the need to understand the root causes of our behaviors and to address them in a thorough inventory. They also highlight the power of surrendering to a higher power and the transformation that can come from following the 12 Steps. The hosts encourage listeners to challenge their fears and to dream big, knowing that they have the support and guidance of a higher power. Today we are going to learn the fourth step in mastering basic multiplication facts using games.
In this episode, Dr. Ferghal Armstrong and Dr. Laura Petracek explore the fourth step of the twelve-step program - making a searching and fearless moral inventory. They discuss why this step is crucial for individuals with alcohol or substance use disorders, and how it can lead to a sense of relief and freedom from self-loathing. The conversation also covers the fifth step, where confession to a sponsor plays a significant role in the recovery journey. If you're looking for insights and guidance on how to navigate these steps and overcome addiction, this episode is for you.Key Points and Learning Outcomes:1. The Importance of a Moral Inventory: The fourth step involves taking an honest and fearless inventory of oneself, examining the wreckage caused by addiction in areas such as relationships, jobs, and personal well-being. By facing the consequences of their actions, individuals can gain a clearer perspective on the impact of their addiction.2. Relief and Support: Engaging in a moral inventory often brings a sense of relief as individuals unload the weight of negativity and self-loathing. Knowing that others have experienced similar challenges and mistakes through the support of sponsors and recovery groups can provide comfort and foster a sense of belonging.3. Fearlessness Through Willingness: While the idea of a moral inventory may initially evoke fear, the first step towards it is willingness. By acknowledging and embracing the need for self-reflection and growth, individuals can gradually become more fearless in their journey towards recovery.4. Resentments as Fuel for Addiction: Resentments are identified as the number one offender and a driving factor behind relapse. The constant replaying of negative thoughts and emotions can lead individuals to seek solace in addictive behaviours. Addressing and processing resentments is crucial for long-term sobriety.5. Aligning with Moral Values: Addiction often leads individuals to act against their own moral values, such as honesty, fidelity, or generosity. Through the fourth step, individuals reintroduce themselves to their moral anchors, reestablishing their values as a guidepost for recovery.Actionable Takeaways:1. Embrace the fear: Recognize that starting a moral inventory may be frightening but understand that it is a necessary and brave step towards recovery. Allow willingness to pave the way for fearlessness.2. Seek support: Engage with a sponsor or join a four-step group to create a sense of community and combat feelings of isolation. Hearing others' experiences and realizing you're not alone can foster a compassionate perspective towards oneself.3. Address resentments: Identify resentments and work on processing and releasing them. Understand that holding onto resentments only perpetuates the cycle of addiction, and forgiveness and acceptance can pave the way towards healing.4. Realign with core values: Take time to reflect on one's moral values and assess where addiction has led to their violation. Make a commitment to realign actions and choices with those core values, fostering personal growth and integrity.Quote:"Resentments are the number one offender and the number one reason that people go back out and relapse." - Dr. Laura Petracek

First Step Three, Then Step FourOf the seven steps to living a fully surrendered life to God, perhaps none is more vital than the fourth— offering ourselves, specifically our bodies, as a living sacrifice to Him. But this can only be accomplished after we have done the hard work of denying ourselves and dying to self, which was the point of the third step (Matt. 16:24). Death and denial must take place before we present our bodies (flesh) to Him as an act of worship and sacrifice. You will ultimately fail, horrendously, if you try to reverse the order. We must have died to ourselves first in order to present ourselves to Him as a living sacrifice. Otherwise, we're dealing with a two-headed monster. And it ain't pretty. Presenting ourselves as a living sacrifice means taking our body, our flesh, with all its desires and ambitions, and laying it down before God as an act of worship and submission to His Lordship. And this, as they say, is where the men are separated from the boys. It is not for the faint of heart. To be more exact on what step four entails, Romans 12:1-2 reveals what we are to do to submit to Him and what He does for us in response to our submission. What we give is all we are— and what we receive is all He is. Pretty good exchange if you ask me. We give Him rocks, and He gives us diamonds. Not too shabby. So read the passage slowly and take note of each word and promise.I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God – Romans 12:1-2.Let's look at this passage a little closer.I beseech (urge, beg) you therefore, brethren, (on what basis) by the mercies of God, that you (our responsibility) present your bodies a (what) living sacrifice, (seen by God as) holy, acceptable to God, (and why should we do this) which is your reasonable service (based on the mercies of God). And (implied, you) do not be conformed to this world, but (implied, you) be transformed by the renewing of your mind, (for what benefit) that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.The essence of the surrendered life is knowing, for certain, the perfect will of God. And this is the promise given to those who offer their bodies (flesh) to Him, unreservedly. Why is this So Important… and Seem So Extreme? Why is this so important? Because our flesh is the source of so much pride, sin, and selfishness. And therefore, our flesh has to die (see step three). Our natural instincts are to gratify our own wants and needs first, before anything else, including God. We are born self-centered creatures, seeking our own advancement and comfort above all else. But God calls us to live differently, to put others before ourselves and seek His kingdom first (Matt. 6:33). And this requires denying the flesh and crucifying it along with its passions and desires (Gal. 5:24). In a word, we must die to self so that we can live fully to God.And what do we do once we have denied and died to ourselves? We offer ourselves, our bodies (flesh), the seat of our lust and sins, to the Lord as a living sacrifice and act of surrender. But this surrender is more than just a mental acknowledgment or verbal profession. It requires action. So we demonstrate surrender by taking our body and making it a “living sacrifice”— by placing it on the altar before God to say, “I am no longer my own, but Yours to command and do with what You wish.” Or, in the words of Jesus, “Not my will, but Yours, be done” (Luke...

Aloha and welcome to the sobriety rocks podcast, I'm your host, Kirk Waterman. Today we talk about A Searching and Fearless Moral InventoryRumi said, “O, happy the soul that saw its own faults.” When I was drinking and using, I avoided looking at any of my faults, even though I had no problem pointing out yours. Then, after landing in recovery and seeing the fourth step for the first time, I was hesitant, afraid, and wanted no part of it. After all, I had anger, fear, pain, people, behavior, thoughts, and feelings I had to drink and use over for years. There was no way I was going to do a searching and fearless moral inventory of myself. Then, I heard people in the rooms who felt just like me. But, they were doing the work, and getting through it unscathed. So, they held my hands, and walked with me through it. Sure enough, I felt better when I was done, and the desire to drink and use left me. To top it off, that difficult, simple process, propelled me to complete the steps, heal my damaged spirit, and find a new, wonderful, clean and sober life. Wherever you are on your path, I hope you take the time to uncover, discover, and discard. If you do, I guarantee, you too will find a new, wonderful life. And maybe even some of the hidden treasures you thought you lost.Today we close with a brief guided meditation to help fill you with love and light, so please get comfortable, close your eyes, take a few deep breaths, and join me.Find Treatment Centers Find Recovery Meetings Listen to Recovery Speakers Download Recovery Literature Access Free Recovery Resources Visit RecoveryHQ.com Visit Sober Surgeries Follow us: Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, Facebook Contact Us For Help Today!

You can head to the link in the show notes. We will link this exact episode to the link in the show notes hybridministry.xyz/038. Once again, thrilled to be with you. Glad that you guys are here. And without any further ado, let's dive in and start talking about Instagram as a part of your church's six step social media framework. Nick Clason (01:56): All right, let's talk Instagram. So, um, again, if you, uh, did not watch last episode, uh, or listened to it, I would definitely recommend going back and doing it because in our order we want YouTube, TikTok, Facebook, Instagram. And the primary reason for putting Facebook ahead of Instagram was, I personally have found it easier to start with Facebook link my two accounts, Instagram and Facebook. Um, on the Facebook side you can try and start linking 'em through Instagram side, but you're eventually gonna end up over needing to do your meta business suite. And that that's just the easiest place to start is Facebook. And so if you're starting from scratch, start with Facebook, but don't abandon or neglect Instagram because Instagram is actually an incredibly used and um, popular resource among Americans. So, uh, just a couple quick Instagram hit quick hitter stats before we dive into actual strategy around it. Nick Clason (02:52): In the US there are 127.2 million Instagram users, uh, in the United States in the year 2023 alone. Uh, Snapchat, conversely is at 89.5 and TikTok is at 89.7 according to stati statistica.com. I'll link some of the stuff in the show notes. Some other interesting, um, stats and statistics is the age breakdown is that male users are at 51.8%. Female users are at 48.2%. Um, the age breakdown on Instagram, 13 to 17 year olds are 8% of the usage. Um, where 18 to 24 year olds are at 30.8% of the usage. 25 to 34 year olds are at 30.3% of the usage. 35 to 44 year olds are at 15.7% of the usage. 45 to 55 year olds, 8.4% of the usage, 55 to 64 year olds, 4.3% of the usage and then 65 plus are at 2.6% of the usage of people on Instagram. Now that being said, you can see that the data skews young, but there's a giant, a giant spike between the ages of 18 and 35. Nick Clason (04:16): Again, my guess is as a church, uh, we did this, this thing with the unstuck organization a couple years ago with the church I worked at and uh, they said it well. They're like, you obviously wanna reach all people and be all things to all people. However, you probably also want to kind of hone in on a demographic and you don't wanna pick one over the other. But once you hone in on one, what you do notice a lot of times is that the other demographics are attracted to just you having some sort of vision. And so my guess is that the demographic, the target demographic that you're attempting to reach if you're a younger church or if you're going to at least try and reach the next generation with kids and students, is that you're gonna wanna squarely reach between 18 and 34. Like that is probably your prime shot and you're probably weak on that 18 to 25, 18 to 30 pre-k um, spot. Nick Clason (05:12): And the reason I know that is cuz just about every church in America is actually kinda weak at that. However, uh, I think that that is still squarely a good demographic to be, um, targeting and and trying to to go after. All right, some other quick Instagram stats, Instagram story, daily active users are at 50, uh, 500 million plus. Uh, the number of businesses on Instagram are 200 million plus. And um, there are 0.59% of Instagram accounts with over 1 million followers. So Instagram, as you can tell, are is still incredibly, um, active. It's still incredibly popular while is very much on the rise, um, and has been challenging Some of these legacy platforms like Instagram, like Facebook, Instagram still has a place, in fact, just like anecdotally, like I prefer TikTok, but my wife, she watches short form videos, but she chooses to do so in the Instagram reels section of Instagram. Nick Clason (06:16): Which leads us to our next section. Let's talk about some of the different features, um, that you can find and can use on Instagram. All right, the first feature is the Instagram feed. Now this is probably the thing that if you are just logging into Instagram for the first time, the first thing you're gonna see is the spot where people post pictures and you scroll. Instagram made the scroll endlessly. Like that was them. They made that, uh, popular and then they made all their social media sort of adapt to that. In fact, I remember the update when Facebook went from side swiping photos to you could click on a photo and you could swipe this way. They did that in response to Instagram. I don't know if that was before or after they acquired it, but nonetheless, like Instagram has been very popular and has made a lot of important headway in the world, um, of social media. Nick Clason (07:07): And so the feed is probably your legacy platform. It's also your social graph spot where you are following the people that you want to follow. Um, and so you get on there, you'd scroll and you'd see, oh, so and so just, you know, they just went on a trip to Brazil. I'm gonna check that out. I'm gonna like it, I'm gonna comment, I'm gonna share. That's what happens on the Instagram feed. I do also think that the Instagram feed was one of the first places where the highly curated look became popularized. And I do think that some of the platforms like TikTok, like Snapchat and even like be real, have um, swung the pendulum back is because they are pushing back against some of the highly curated social media, uh, places. And so they're looking to find a place where you can actually come in, be yourself, be real, show the unfiltered version of yourself. Nick Clason (08:00): And so the whole perfectly edited, perfectly airbrushed photos and curated. I think that that is starting to wane, especially with the newer and younger generation. And so while Instagram and its feed definitely has a position in this six step social media framework, I do think that it is probably one that has grown the most tired and people have grown the most weary of over the years. Let's talk about Instagram's stories. If you log into your Instagram app on your phone across the top, they're little circle icons of different accounts. Uh, and if you like navigate onto an account and there's like a little yellow, not yellow purple or like pink the Instagram gradient, uh, ring around it that indicates that they have a story. Well, when you log into your app immediately right across the top, if there are icons up there, almost inevitably that means that those people have used their stories. Nick Clason (08:53): So that was made popular by the social media Snapchat. It was an idea that you could post something that would last for 24 hours. And so a lot of video, a lot more unfiltered, a lot less curated, a lot more behind the scenes, a lot more just real life. And Instagram stories was an amazing platform and one that um, I think a lot of churches took advantage of and honestly can still take advantage of, like I think for example, really great strategies to just hand that over to someone on your staff once a week and have them do a day in the life. A takeover, a takeover Tuesday. Um, we do it at like on Wednesdays cuz that's our ministry night at our church. And so, um, someone is in charge of taking over the Instagram account either, you know, on a Wednesday all day during the day, uh, to lead into, you know, Wednesday night coming up for, for students or whatever. Nick Clason (09:44): So I think Instagram stories have grown in popularity. Uh, statistic I have here says that 86%, approximately 86% of Instagram users access their stories on a daily basis. So it's still a very popular feature and still one that's very much widely being used by Instagram users today. Let's talk about Instagram reels. The reason most of us are here, especially in 2022 with short form video content, Instagram also stole another feature. Just like they stole stories from Snapchat. They stole reels in that idea from the popular app. TikTok Instagram introduced reels into their platform in August of 2020. Um, it's the same basic premise of what you get on TikTok. Scroll endlessly use trending sounds, do silly dances. One thing that's interesting to note is about a year ago or six months ago or so, Instagram recently converted every single video on their platform from whatever it was over to a reel. Nick Clason (10:43): So for example, I don't know if you remember, there was this platform called I G T V Instagram tv. They're trying to kind of go after YouTube and the long form video pieces, however they went for vertical where YouTube was still focusing on horizontal. Every one of my and i I went in on I G T V when it was new. I used it a lot personally. I used it a lot in my ministry. They've converted all of those I gtv videos over to Rio so they don't sit under an I G T V tab anymore or over an I G T V app, which was its own thing. Which not sure why Instagram felt the need to add a whole nother app that you could still access through their normal app. Nonetheless, I digress. But now you can still find old legacy I G T V videos sitting under your Instagram reels tab. Nick Clason (11:28): That's where all of those have been converted and now that's where they sit. So, uh, Instagram reels, uh, has become very popularized and um, Instagram has gone in to say that we are, we are about reels now. This is our thing. They have recently come out with a little algorithm shift in saying that they do want to push, um, photos, again, not just reels. And so, uh, we'll dive into the Instagram algorithm change in a future episode, but for now, still know that in 2023 I think your strategy should be short form video content. And that does definitely and very much include Instagram real. Let's talk best and worst content strategies for Instagram. Here are three dues on Instagram. Do number one, do post pictures of people in your church congregation. A couple years ago, Brady Sheer went out and did this study. Uh, it was just an anecdotal study, but he took a, uh, cell phone and then you hired a, a photographer and they took pictures in the same day. Nick Clason (12:34): And, uh, the people could not really tell the difference between the cell phone photos and the actual like professionally graded photos. The point in the premise of that is that in your pocket you have the power of an incredibly strong camera that you can use to take photos of people in your church congregation. So take on a Sunday morning, on a Wednesday night, whenever your primary meeting time is, take those photos, post them and use them on the feed. That can almost be your entire content strategy for on the feed. Now there is a probably decent chance that you already have some sort of rhythm with a photographer, whether it be volunteers or whatever, who are regularly taking photos for you. Keep that going. I still think that pictures of people with smiling faces posted on your social media is still a relevant, meaningful, and purposeful content strategy in 2023. Nick Clason (13:28): Content strategy number two is repost your reels. So what I mean by that is, like we said, Instagram is all in on short form video content here in 2023. When you go to post a reel, you have an option to either add it to the feed or take or hide it from your profile grid most often, cuz I, you've heard me say in past episodes perhaps that I post three uh, TikTok slash reels a day. So I don't post all three of those to the feed, but I do choose one that I want to post to the feed. So for example, we will often have fun, silly, goofy content, um, but one of them is gonna be serious. And I often choose to post that one to the feed so that more of our church people are seeing it. So use the Instagram post to feed option as a way to supplement your Instagram strategy, especially on your Instagram feed. Nick Clason (14:20): Also use some funny content. We talked about this in the YouTube trends report, but essentially 63% of Gen Z followed a meme account in the last year. And, um, gen Z and and people on social media are looking for brands and people to repurpose and use funny meme based silly kind of content like that. So use that stuff. Use memes on in short form video, use static memes. Um, we do a meme Monday and I think that there's a market for that even if you're not youth ministry. So don't be afraid to be funny. Don't be afraid to lean in and try and create a laugh moment. Here's some things to avoid on Instagram. Avoid announcements and graphics. Okay? Those just simply don't perform very well and people do not get on social media to be announced at or have been told what's coming up next. Nick Clason (15:14): If all you're doing on your social media is announcing things and reminding people about events, change your strategy. There is a way to incorporate announcements but still use the medium of the day. So, for example, you can do trending meme sounds, dances, things like that, that are reals, that are tos. However you can do those that are funny about like the upcoming event. So for example, last summer or spring as we were leading into summer camp, there was a, a trending sound that I found that is something like, it smells like a public restroom in here. And I just created a thing with like a green screen background, like a cabin type vibe, right? And I said, P o v, which stands for point of view pov middle school boys cabin at camp. And then I posted it, right? That's a, that's a camp adjacent announcement. Nick Clason (16:03): It's different than just a graphic for hey Santa for summer camp, right? But, uh, it still gets to point across. So don't just post graphics and announcements. Also with whatever you do, avoid stock footage. You may now have photos of people send someone this week to take photos of people in your church and boom, you'll have photos of people. Please while you are getting things up and running on your website or your Instagram, avoid photos of people because it's disingenuine. It's not who your church is. It's not true representation of the people in your church. It is a paid version of the people in your church. So do not use stock footage, especially on the Instagram feed. What do we do about stories? I would still use stories. Um, and I used to be all in on a story strategy and try and posting something every single day. Nick Clason (16:50): Uh, you still can be, but with as many reels as I post now I can supplement kind of some of that content. We'll get that to that in a minute. Um, bond stories I would recommend using the just the Instagram stories editor. You can use things like the question sticker. You can use things like the poll sticker. The link sticker, which is an amazing resource to have. The emoji slider tool. Like how much do you like this? All the way up, all the way down countdowns. You can do takeovers, like I said. Uh, you can spam your stories during big events. Spam is just a turmoil, like you just overwhelm it and you have so many little dots across the top. Um, you can give it over to a friend, a volunteer, a student to, to post to, to make it feel like you are in the moment of the event. Nick Clason (17:34): You can also kind of create a little bit of FOMO with that. So I definitely recommend still using and utilizing your Instagram stories feature. It's a place where you can post content that doesn't have to go on your feet and kind of like live there forever. Finally, Instagram reels. You know that my preferred strategy personally is to post three Instagram reels a day. And when I say Instagram reels often I post it in TikTok first, then I copy the link, then I go to a browser that says download, um, download TikTok video without watermark, paste the link in there, download it, and then I go post it over to Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube shorts. Yes, there's a lot of manual work and very recently, and we're gonna do a review on this here soon, I've come across a, um, posting tool for you. And so right now I'm trying a third party service and I don't like it very much. Nick Clason (18:29): And I'll tell you why in a minute. In a future episode, I'm gonna also try posting some stuff through the native apps, um, of TikTok of the Meta Business suite, uh, to see if that does anything for me. However, I'm just gonna be honest with you, I like posting in live time. Yeah, sometimes it's annoying cuz it, you know, I'm reminded I have to do it and it pops up at a very inconvenient time, but I still like that idea and I can edit things right on my phone that way. Otherwise I have to do all of my editing, a hundred percent of my editing in like, uh, computer software and, and save it to a hard drive somewhere to access it later. And, and that's sometimes a little bit inconvenient, but you should be leaning into Instagram real content. You can use it to supplement what goes on your feet. Nick Clason (19:13): You can use it to supplement what goes in your stories and I would definitely recommend, um, going all in on it. So just a quick reminder and recap. What I do and what I use on my personal Instagram at our church is we do a me Monday, which are photos on the feed. We do a Tuesday message recap from the previous Wednesday. Remember, we're a student ministry. That's a reel. I also post that to my feed Wednesday night. I do a either a carousel post of 10 photos of students or a highlight video, um, of that night and post that to the feed. If I don't post a video to the feed, it's cuz I posted photos, but I'm still posting the reel. Uh, Thursday we do a recap video of the message from the night before. And then on Friday I like to do, um, a photo dump of the Wednesday. Nick Clason (20:00): So that's, if I, if I don't do it on Wednesday, I'll save it for Friday and do a photo dump there on Friday. Then I'll inter intermix, uh, different, uh, story stuff, like mostly just real, uh, stuff, things, honestly, I go to reels, things that don't perform super well, and I repost 'em to my story so that people still see them. Uh, and then I'll do a takeover once a week. And that's primarily our Instagram strategy for now. So most of it's kind of built out and happening over in Instagram reels, a few things on feed to make sure that we're still showing up and stories, but the most, most of it's all kind of happening reels. And you, you look here, like we do, uh, a photo dump and a meme post. And that's basically it for like static photo posts. Hey, well once again, thanks for sticking around to the end of the episode. Nick Clason (20:46): Hey, to all of you on YouTube, hello to all of you listening and your earbuds on a run. So glad that you joined us. We are done with social media. We have one final, uh, area. We're gonna focus on website and, uh, text messaging and email and how do those all work together with social media. And then we're gonna put it all together. So join us in the next episode. So we have done, uh, YouTube, we have done TikTok, we've done Facebook, we've done Instagram. We will do those other platforms, website, social media, uh, website, texting and email. And then finally, part six, we're gonna put it all together and say, Hey, here is your church content, social media strategy for 2023. So glad you joined us. Hey, if you have not grabbed your e-book, how to create a TikTok from start to finish. As you heard in this episode, it, Instagram is still very much in on reels. Nick Clason (21:37): So if you need to create some reels, uh, you can do that and learn how to do that through the TikTok editor and by posting a TikTok and do it all on TikTok, download it. Boom, go over post it on a reel. So there you go. There's your ebook. Go check that out at our website, link in the description below. Subscribe wherever you're listening, subscribe maybe wherever you're watching. So good that you joined us, we would love it if you could drop a five star rating or review just to help us get the word out. We want more people to become aware of the incredible message of Jesus, how important it is to be leaning into the hybrid hybridization of your church. I'll just add some friends over last night from our, from the church I work at, they're all a little bit younger and every single one of 'em was like, yeah, we want more hybrid. We're all trying to think and lean into that direction. So, uh, it is the wave of the future, so don't shy away from it. Try to lean into it. Try something new this week and don't forget, and as always, stay.

Napoleon Hill was an American author in the area of the new thought movement who was one of the earliest producers of the modern genre of personal-success literature. He is widely considered to be one of the great writers on success. His most famous work, Think and Grow Rich (1937), is one of the best-selling books of all time (at the time of Hill's death in 1970, Think and Grow Rich had sold 20 million copies). Hill's works examined the power of personal beliefs, and the role they play in personal success. He became an advisor to President Franklin D. Roosevelt from 1933 to 1936. "What the mind of man can conceive and believe, it can achieve" is one of Hill's hallmark expressions. How achievement actually occurs, and a formula for it that puts success in reach of the average person, were the focal points of Hill's books (Goodreads).

A couple of great topics from the meeting last night, parenting and why the fourth step seems so scary. Parenting has been the most challenging thing I've ever done and one of the biggest sources of shame, guilt, and regret. Mainly around the fear of screwing my kid up and around falling short or losing my temper. Ultimately, everything works out better than I can imagine but boys is scary. As far as the force step, there's often a big fear involved. The idea of sharing all of my secrets with someone else can be terrifying for people. However, in my experience, it's more about getting honest with myself and building community in connection with people. The first step doesn't have to be scary but it takes work. If you know someone if it from here in this podcast, be sure to share it with them. We would also love a written review on Apple podcast or Spotify. REPAIRING THE DAMAGEWe attempt to sweep away the debris which has accumulated out of our effort to live on self-will and run the show ourselves. If we haven't the will to do this, we ask until it comes. Remember it was agreed at the beginning we would go to any lengths for victory over alcohol.— ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS, p. 76Making a list of people I had harmed was not a particularly difficult thing to do. They had showed up in my Fourth Step inventory: people towards whom I had resentments, real or imagined, and whom I had hurt by acts of retaliation. For my recovery to be thorough, I believed it was not important for those who had legitimately harmed me to make amends to me. What is important in my relationship with God is that I stand before Him, knowing I have done what I can to repair the damage I have done.Need the Daily Reflection Book?Visit our web siteRead about Recovery on our BlogVisit our Facebook GroupFollow us on TwitterSupport the Podcast:- On Patreon: https://patreon.com/dailyreflection- On PayPal: https://paypal.me/dailyreflectionIf you're struggling with alcohol or addiction, or wondering how to stop drinking it's helpful to know that there's a solution that has worked for millions of people. July 15 Relations with others“We made a list of all persons we had harmed and became willing to make amends to them all.”Step Eight––––=––––All human beings struggle with self-centeredness. The chronic self-centeredness that lies at the very core of addiction makes that struggle doubly difficult for people like us. Many of us have lived as if we believed we were the last people on earth, utterly blind to the effect our behavior has had on those around us.The Eighth Step is the process our program has given us to honestly examine our past relationships. We take a look at the writing we did on our Fourth Step to identify the effects our actions had on the people in our lives. When we recognize harm done to some of those people, we become willing to take responsibility for our actions by making amends to them. The variety of people we encounter in our day and the quality of our relations with them determines, to a great extent, the quality of our very lives. Love, humor, excitement, caring—the things that make life worth living derive much of their meaning from being shared with others. Understanding this, we want to discover the true nature of our relationships with other people and mend whatever breaks we may find in those relations. We want to work the Eighth Step.––––=––––Just for today: I want to fully enjoy the companionship of my fellows. I will examine my relationships with the people in my life. Where I find I've harmed others, I will seek the willingness to make amends to them.

Welcome to this Right On Time Minisode. For this episode, where we are talking about some practices I am implementing right now around gratitude, and expanding my money mindset. Because, about a month ago, I recognized that I had some scarcity stuff coming up. We're experiencing growth in the business. Things are going well. We're reinvesting in the business, and I identified, still, some scarcity, some lacks, some reactions, when I was like, ooh, are we going to do that? Ah, ah, ah, I'm not sure. So I picked up a book... Actually, first up, I implemented an approach, where I am writing down my goals for the year, every single day for 30 days, to see what comes up, to step into that, to remind my subconscious, and to reprogram my thoughts around the goals that I'm working towards in case there's any scarcity around that. And there is, I can confirm. But I'm getting better. It's getting a little bit more comfortable, and I'm seeing the way forward a little bit more clearly every day. The second thing I am doing every day is I am writing down 10 things I am grateful for and why. This comes from a practice recommended in the book, "The Magic" by Rhonda Byrne. Actually, my hairstylist recommended it. She had it on her station, at her space, when I was getting my hair cut, and we just had a lovely conversation, and I mentioned something she's like, "Actually, I'm reading about it right now. Check this out." So I immediately picked up the book. I'm really enjoying the gratitude practices that Rhonda recommends in the book. So I've been writing down, every day, for the last week, 10 things I am grateful for. And not just what I'm grateful for, but also the why. Why am I grateful for it? I am grateful for great weather because it perks up my energy, I feel better all around, and I can be outside, right? One simple example. It's simple, the weather, great weather. Nothing big is happening there, but you can capture everything on these gratitude lists. The second thing I am doing every day is I am recognizing, I have this in a place where I can see it and read it frequently, that the gift of health is keeping me alive. And interestingly, I had a little bit of a reaction to this one, like, yes, yes, it's true. The gift of health is keeping me alive, but I have chronic migraines that I'm dealing with. I've got a headache almost every day, not quite every day, and they're going down, they're going down, but it prompts nausea. It prompts all sorts of things for me. So reading this, I'm like, all right, I'm gonna read it because I am indeed grateful for the gift of health that is keeping me alive. And, I will take a little bit more of that. So we're gonna keep it going. The other thing that I am doing every night, as a part of the recommendations in this book, to expand our capacity for abundance, and to increase our gratitude. And there, of course, all sorts of benefits for our health, for our life that comes with a gratitude practice, is at the end of each day, I'm holding a rock, and I am saying the thing I am most grateful for from the day. The thing that I'm most grateful for from the day, and just saying, thank you, thank you, thank you for whatever that thing may be. And lastly, the thing that I am doing is, I wrote on a $100 bill, I wrote on and $100 bill, on this sticker. I didn't actually write on the $100 bill, that I am thankful for all of the money I have been given in my life. Not just that I'm receiving right now, but all the money I have ever received. I am thankful for that. And in the book, Rhonda prompts you to think through all the things that you are grateful for, or that you've ever received, right? That you are grateful for, like the shoes that I didn't have to buy when I was a kid, the house that I had over my head when I was a kid, the Mercury Grand Marquis, a very big car that my parents gave me to drive to school and back when I was a kid. So what are all of those things that you've ever received that have money, that led to you having something, and being taken care of? And it could be vacations, it could be necessities, it could be anything across the board, but all of the money I've been given in my life, I am thankful for. And I'm looking at that several times a day, 'cause this is just near me, by me, as I sit and work, and while we talk. And Rhonda actually recommended you put this on a $1 bill. That felt pretty comfortable. I didn't have a $1 bill. I happened to only have a 100 in my wallet. I sometimes keep a $100 bill in my wallet. And, so I put it on the hundred, and that made me feel a certain way. Am I really news? Like, am really gonna leave this out. Should I use this for something? Do I need to use this for something? So, all sorts of questions came up that I just tucked aside, and I'm going with it. So, that is next to me. I wanted to share this with you today in this minisode, in case you have identified that you are coming up against some blocks, some scarcity, some limits, even if they are just in our head, right? Around the abundance that is coming to you and the growth that you are experiencing, or will be experiencing in your business. Even just writing down my goals every day, which is where this journey started 15 days ago, has been expansive. I'm settling into that. And now I'm layering in these gratitude practices, and I'm finding all sorts of stuff is bubbling up. So you've got to let me know if you try this, what comes up for you as well? Let me know, because business, growing a business, and growing in our life is strategic, and it is tactical, and there are specific things that we do to grow our businesses. And, there are all sorts of other stuff that is coming with us as we grow the businesses that we picked up along the way in our life, that we picked up as kids, that we picked up in college, we picked up all of these ideas of what is and what should be. But part of what will happen as we are growing businesses, is we're gonna have to unpack some of that. We're gonna have to identify what doesn't serve us or support us in our growth and on our journey anymore, and we're gonna have to put some new practices in place. So, these are a few new practices to test out. Check out "The Magic" if you are curious about the rest of the gratitude practices. I'm only a week or so in, and there are 30 days of gratitude practices that build in the book, "The Magic". So, let me know if any of this resonates for you, or if you grab the book and you decide to go on this journey as well, because, my friend, we are in this together, and I'm so excited for everything you are creating. You are Right On Time! Keegan learned early on that resentment has no place in his sober world today so long as he focuses on others.THE "NUMBER ONE OFFENDER"Resentment is the "number one" offender. It destroys more alcoholics than anything else. From it stem all forms of spiritual disease, for we have been not only mentally and physically ill, we have been spiritually sick.ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS, p. 64As I look at myself practicing the Fourth Step, it is easy to gloss over the wrong that I have done, because I can easily see it as a question of "getting even" for a wrong done to me. If I continue to relive my old hurt, it is a resentment and resentment bars the sunlight from my soul. If I continue o relive hurts and hates, I will hurt and hate myself. After years in the dark of resentments, I have bund the sunlight. I must let go of resentments; I cannot afford them.Need the Daily Reflection Book?Visit our web siteRead about Recovery on our BlogVisit our Facebook GroupFollow us on TwitterSupport the Podcast:- On Patreon: https://patreon.com/dailyreflection- On PayPal: https://paypal.me/dailyreflectionIf you're struggling with alcohol or addiction, or wondering how to stop drinking it's helpful to know that there's a solution that has worked for millions of people. Jewls was an alcoholic and an addict who blamed everyone else including her husband for her problems. It wasn't until she entered the program of recovery that she gained the ability to drop the word blame and acknowledge her part in the unhappiness in her life. Today, her relationship with her husband is the best it has every been thanks to Alcoholics Anonymous and her connection to God.A WORD TO DROP: "BLAME"To see how erratic emotions victimized us often took a long time. We could perceive them quickly in others, but only slowly in ourselves First of all, we had to admit that we had many of these defects, even though such disclosures were painful and humiliating. Where other people were concerned, we had to drop the word "blame" from our speech and thoughtTWELVE STEPS AND TWELVE TRADITIONS, p. 47When I did my Fourth Step, following the Big Book guidelines, I noticed that my grudge list was filled with my prejudices and my blaming others for my not being able to succeed and to live up to my potential. I also discovered I felt different because I was black. As I continued to work on the Step, I learned that I always had drunk to rid myself of those feelings. It was only when I sobered up and worked on my inventory, that I could no longer blame anyone.Need the Daily Reflection Book?Visit our web siteRead about Recovery on our BlogVisit our Facebook GroupFollow us on TwitterSupport the Podcast:- On Patreon: https://patreon.com/dailyreflection- On PayPal: https://paypal.me/dailyreflection
One of the most important gifts we received as the result of working step four has been the ability to get free from resentments more quickly and easily than ever before in our life. And along with that freedom from resentment we experience a level of peace, calm and improved relationships which we never would have dreamed possible. It has taken time and practice but it has really changed the whole way we operate in the world with others.
Kathy admits she was a relentless people-pleaser. As she entered recovery, and learned to build self-esteem, she began to place a higher value on her own needs. Slowly, but surely, with the help of the program, and the fellowship, Kathy has built her own character and has become a more authentic version of herself. CHARACTER BUILDINGDemands made upon other people for too much attention, protection, and love can only invite domination or revulsion. . . .TWELVE STEPS AND TWELVE TRADITIONS, p. 44When I uncovered my need for approval in the Fourth Step, I didn't think it should rank as a character defect. I wanted to think of it more as an asset (that is, the desire to please people). It was quickly pointed out to me that this "need" can be very crippling. Today I still enjoy getting the approval of others, but I am not willing to pay the price I used to pay to get it. I will not bend myself into a pretzel to get others to like me. If I get your approval, that's fine; but if I don't, I will survive without it. I am responsible for speaking what I perceive to be the truth, not what I think others may want to hear. Similarly, my false pride always kept me overly concerned about my reputation. Since being enlightened in the A.A. program, my aim is to improve my character.Need the Daily Reflection Book?Visit our web siteRead about Recovery on our BlogVisit our Facebook GroupFollow us on TwitterSupport the Podcast:- On Patreon: https://patreon.com/dailyreflection- On PayPal: https://paypal.me/dailyreflection

content: Sep 4, 2017 · podcast: Dec 29, 2020 Audio (MP3): 20170904 - Relapse and Reservations Video (MP4): 20170904 - Relapse and Reservations After I’d been sober for a number of years I relapsed. It wasn’t something that I thought was gonna happen. And also, it didn’t “just happen” either. So with that being said I feel qualified, I feel confident, I feel like I’m able to talk about relapse overall. I have experience with it. I didn’t have any deep, dark, dank secrets. I didn’t hold anything back when writing my Fourth Step and I didn’t hold anything back when sharing my Fifth Step. I made all of the amends on my Eighth Step list. I was more spiritual than I’d ever been my whole life. So why did I relapse? Because I quit going to meetings. I quit hanging out with people in recovery and hung out instead with “normal” people. that drank like normal people do. We had a lot in common those “normal” ones, similar interests and so on. We could bond over things I couldn’t with people in the meetings. And really we alcoholics aren’t that much different from them. I’ve known plenty of “normal” people who had resentments, who’d been plagued with fear their whole life, who felt lost and couldn’t find their way. Anyways with my relapse, somehow I had convinced myself that I was okay, that me drinking was okay. Plain and simple: I’d lost touch with where I’d came from. And I write this because I hear people talk who say that the reason alcoholics relapse is because they have reservations. And I think it’s bullshit to say that everyone who’s relapsed didn’t work the steps to their full ability.[1] I’ve heard that in meetings. And further I’ve known people who have relapsed or were in the midst of a relapse who were and still are more spiritual, more kind, more compassionate and caring then those 20+ year sober guys who think they know it all. And obviously something is lacking in their program if they’re up there pounding their fists at the soapbox about a relapse they never had. Yes, some people do relapse because there’s a secret that they don’t want to tell or they never found the humility or willingness to make a certain amend or whatever. But that’s not fucking everybody. Okay, obviously I have some emotion behind this but just to be clear, just because you’ve never relapsed that doesn’t mean that you can come along and tell me that I didn’t do something right the first time. Or that you can make some broad assumption, or borderline accusation against everyone who has relapsed. Be careful with airs of intolerance or ones of arrogance. They’ll get you in trouble. Further, you’re the authority on your recovery, not mine. And further still, my relapse doesn’t discount my previous recovery. It doesn’t wipe the sobriety slate clean or take away the decade plus I was sober. It only makes my recovery now that much better. And lastly while I’m picking bones… Who cares if I would have been sober for over 25 years if I hadn’t relapsed. I’m not keeping score. Why are you? #alcoholism #twelvesteps #diariespodcast #diariesvideo Okay, I concede to the fact that I fell down on Step 12 before I relapsed. Step 10 and 11, too. But not working steps 1-9 to the best of my ability didn’t have anything to do with my relapse. ↑ jimi hindrance experience · Sep 4, 2017 at 9:11 pm Because he has enlightenment as his aim, a bodhisattva-mahāsattva is so called. content: Nov 24, 2017 · podcast: Dec 18, 2020 Audio (MP3): 20171124 - Each and every time I started writing People always say that the 12 steps are in order for a reason. I guess I never really paid that much attention to that statement until after I was in recovery for a year or so. Looking back on my experience with Step 4 I know there's no way in hell that I would've been able to write a searching and fearless moral inventory if I didn't have a concept of God that I believed in. I just wouldn't have. Writing them was hard (I’ve done two) and I felt all kinds of feelings with the second one. Anger, shame, guilt, regret. Horror. Felt all the things that drinking kept me from feeling. I had burning resentments and sexual traumas. Had broken friendships and ruined relationships. And more. I needed to pray for the strength to make it through, pray to that God concept each and every time I started writing.[1] All those feelings I’d kept hidden under blankets and in boxes in the basement came up and out. Like boiling bubbles in a stock pot. I was finally feeling what I should’ve been feeling all along when I was drinking. Being in touch with that hideousness forced me to lean on, rely on that Higher Power. Reaffirm my decision to turn my will and life over to the care of God. Remember that a better way of life lay on the other side. And I was willing to feel and deal with all my monsters if that meant that I didn't have to drink again. If that meant that I didn't have to be the person that I'd become. Be the person that I hated. That I was. I was willing to work the Fourth Step if it meant that I could be somebody new. Be a sober me. Back in the Second Step it talks about being restored to sanity. Writing the Fourth Step is part of how and when that restoration happens. It’s part of how my life became manageable again. This step also gives us the freedom to make our inventory however necessary, with the guidance of a sponsor of course. It doesn't even say that we "wrote" it but only that we "made" it. I pay close attention to the wording of the steps as they are the program, they're how we get and stay sober. As an aside I got into a minor debate once with someone regarding if everyone should actually "write" their inventory. We need our sponsor's input on how we make it and that doesn't always mean that we write it. Why not? If a person is blind or if a person can't read or write, then they need to do what works best for them to make their inventory. The most important thing is that we make it. Don't complicate or procrastinate. I was also relived to find out that we don't need to make a complete inventory but only a "searching and fearless" one. I wrote the best one I could at the time and the Tenth Step allows me to self-analyze and follow up on issues later as needed. And after I put the pen down (because I wrote mine), I realized that doing my Fourth Step hadn't kill me. It was horrible for sure but I made it through with only a deflated ego. And that was one of the best things that needed to happen to this alcoholic. I also finally got some real relief. The kind of relief that drinking never gave me. Relief at the spiritual level. All of my secrets were no longer secrets, they were out in the open. At least on paper. After carrying around emotional trauma for so long it felt good when I was done. So I made an inventory the best I could, took a look at the things that were holding me back, that were standing in the way of me being the best me that I could. And I thank God for the help I was given. Without God, I wouldn’t have been able to write those words. #alcoholism #twelvesteps #diariespodcast And not "needed to" because those were the rules. But "needed to" because I needed help. ↑ Add a comment! Got 30 seconds? Take the super duper, quick and easy podcast survey! Please. 😊 Love the show? Make a donation! Humility is a puzzling concept. We know a lot about humiliation, but humility is a new idea. It sounds suspiciously like groveling, bowing, and scraping. But that’s not what humility is at all. True humility is, simply, acceptance of who we are. By the time we reach a step that uses the word “humbly,” we have already started to put this principle into practice. The Fourth Step gives us an opportunity to examine who we really are, and the Fifth Step helps us accept that knowledge. The practice of humility involves accepting our true nature, honestly being ourselves. We don’t have to grovel or abase ourselves, nor must we try to appear smarter, wealthier, or happier than we really are. Humility simply means we drop all pretense and live as honestly as we can. ––––=–––– Just for today: I will allow knowledge of my true nature to guide my actions. Today, I will face the world as myself.

Implementation is the critical step that trips most people up—and holds them back. This is literally where the rubber meets the road. Each day you wake up, commit to being the human being you have been called to be. When you make a conscious effort to be active, you will get the results you want in your life. All of your actions and thoughts should be done to avoid problems and reach your goals. Be diligent in everything you do, and you will reap the rewards! However, we are all human and you will slip up. You will forget to be consistent and you will revert back to old behaviors. So, when this happens, take corrective action immediately. Have you defined what success means to you? If not, you need to. Ask yourself, what kind of lifestyle do I want to live? How much money will it take to live that lifestyle? What kind of legacy do I want to leave behind? This is all foundational to Success, and this is also the 4th part of the fundamental elements to build the foundation of success. Here are my mindset actions: I have defined what success means to mean, and I work towards it every day. I know that it is my duty, obligation, and responsibility to become successful. Success gives me freedom, and options. I know that having money is not what makes me successful, money is a tool that helps me achieve the success that I want. I redefine success, as soon as I reach it. When I reach a goal, I set new, and higher ones. I never settle for mediocre. I know that I could do more, therefore I do more. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/patienceandhustledaily/support

Tonya Sheridan Gives Her Insight Into the Law of Allowing the Necessary Fourth Step to Utilizing the Universal Law of Attraction Putting the Universal Law of Attraction into play requires completing the following four steps: ask for what you want believe it is already yours let go allow The fourth step, the Law of Allowing, is often the most difficult. But in order to fully manifest what you want, it is necessary. So, What Does the Law of Allowing Require? The Law of Allowing requires that you put yourself into a state of openness and non-resistance to everything and everyone. This is a two-fold process that begins with allowing good energy to flow through you, around you, and in you. Although this is our natural creative state, far too many of us have allowed negative, habitual thought patterns to form. Think about it. How much of your precious time do you spend mulling over and expressing disapproving thoughts about yourself, your job or your life? How much energy do you waste entertaining and conveying negative judgements or opinions, getting mad at others for being who they are, or obsessively taking in every nuance of the latest tragedy? It might seem harmless, after all you are just thinking and talking, you are not actually DOING anything. But the fact is, remaining in a place of judgement, fear, anxiety, or anger, keeps you in aligned with lower vibrational frequencies. Remember, the Universal Law of Attraction states that "like attracts like." So if your vibration remains low, you will attract to you experiences and people that cause you to continue to stay in a low vibration and block things from you that will raise your vibration. How do you know if you are aligned with lower vibrational frequencies or higher ones? The best way to begin this discovery process is to pay attention to what is going on in your body and how you feel emotionally. When you are aligned with lower energy frequencies you will have tightness somewhere in your body. It could be your stomach, neck or shoulders. You might have a headache or backache. You will feel sad, hopeless, fearful, anxious, separate, maybe even hateful the majority of the time. When you think of others you feel judgment, jealousy, and annoyance. When you are aligned with higher energy frequencies you will feel a lightness in your body and mind. You will feel a sense of flow and unity with everything. Emotionally, you will feel love and warmth, hope, excitement and passion the majority of the time. When you think about others you do so from a viewpoint of empathy and compassion. Once you have the hang of paying attention to what is going on in your body and how you feel emotionally, begin to experiment with different thoughts. See which ones make you feel emotionally and physically good. Which ones make your shoulders drop or your stomach unclench. Which thoughts yield feelings of joy, contentment and peace. Also start to notice which circumstance and people trigger negative thoughts. How do you feel after watching the evening news? What kind of thoughts are going on in your mind after participating in an office gossip session? Try replacing the evening news with a silly sit-com and choose to skip the gossip session by going for a 15 minute walk instead. See if you feel safer, happier and more accepting. However, once you have discover the benefits of not watching the news, for example, it will be tempting for you to want to “convert” your family and friends. Sharing what you’ve discovered is fine, but be careful not take on the low energy of self-righteousness or judgment. Which Brings Up the Second Part in the Two-fold Process of the Law of Allowing The second part is that you allow everyone to be as they are. Judging, tolerating, and attempting to change others is the opposite of allowing. The Law of Allowing requires that you are not feeling negative emotions in relation to what others are doing. If someone is doing something that annoys you or making decisions that you know are not in his or her best interest, it is appropriate for you to communicate your point of view in an emotionally neutral way, but then you must let it go. Do not push back, try to change them, tolerate what they are doing or try and figure out why they do what they do. When you are in a place of allowing, you are no longer presuming that you know what is right and wrong for someone else. You allow them to continue on their individual path and see their lessons through. If you cannot maintain a neutral vibration towards someone else, take steps to remove yourself from his or her presence. And then from this separate place, spend time raising your vibration by thinking about this person from a place of compassion and empathy. The Universal Law of Attraction is Simple in Concept but Complex in it Application. There are many subtleties and nuisances to applying the Universal Law of Attraction. Some consider it an art form because it requires in depth study and tireless practice to master. This blog is in no way intended to be a stand-alone piece.
