Thanks for your patience as we get your a fresh new episode next week - in our defense - Mike, MacKenzie and Todd were all out at events last week! We're bringing this one back because it's just too good — and still so relevant. As we roll out Guest Match Pro, we're reminded of all the "bad advice" that still floats around in the podcasting world. In this episode, we tackled the Top 10 Worst Pieces of Podcast Advice and explained why you should steer clear. Whether you're booking guests, looking to grow your audience, or just want to avoid common pitfalls, this rerun is packed with clarity and no-nonsense guidance. Give it another listen — and share it with a podcaster friend! Today's Hosts: Mike Dell and MacKenzie Bennett #10: “All You Need is Passion, Equipment Doesn't Matter” Why it's bad: Yes, passion is crucial, but listeners can tell if you're recording with a low-quality microphone or in a noisy room. Bad audio is a quick way to lose listeners. Better advice: Invest in at least decent equipment and learn basic soundproofing techniques to keep your passion sounding professional. #9: “More Episodes = More Success” Why it's bad: Releasing multiple episodes every week won't matter if the content isn't good. Quality over quantity is the key to success. Better advice: Stick to a manageable release schedule that allows you to create quality content consistently. #8: “Don't Bother with Editing, Raw is Real” Why it's bad: While authenticity is important, long pauses, filler words, or awkward moments aren't entertaining. Editing helps tighten the flow and keep listeners engaged. Better advice: Edit for clarity and flow, even if you want to keep it conversational. #7: “You Don't Need Show Notes or a Website” Why it's bad: Show notes and a website improve searchability, provide additional resources, and make your podcast more professional. Ignoring them means missing out on growth. Better advice: Always include detailed show notes and have a basic website to direct listeners for more information. #6: “If You Build It, They Will Come” Why it's bad: Simply launching a podcast doesn't mean people will magically find it. Marketing, promotion, and networking are essential to grow your audience. Better advice: Have a solid marketing plan, including social media, collaborations, and consistent outreach to grow your listener base. #5: “Monetize Right Away!” Why it's bad: Jumping into monetization without a solid listener base can turn off potential fans. Ads on day one can feel forced and inauthentic. Better advice: Focus on growing your audience before considering monetization strategies, and make sure the ads fit your content and audience. #4: “Just Copy What's Popular” Why it's bad: Trying to mimic the format, style, or content of other successful podcasts rarely works. Listeners want originality and authenticity, not a poor imitation of their favorite shows. Better advice: Find your unique voice and perspective; that's what will draw in listeners. #3: “Focus on Going Viral” Why it's bad: Chasing virality often leads to gimmicky content that doesn't retain a loyal audience. A single viral moment doesn't guarantee long-term success. Better advice: Focus on creating consistent, high-quality content that builds a loyal following over time, rather than aiming for a viral hit. #2: “Make Your Podcast for Everyone” Why it's bad: Trying to appeal to everyone often means your content is too broad and doesn't resonate with a specific audience. A niche is key to growing a dedicated following. Better advice: Focus on a clear niche or target audience. Being specific will help attract the right listeners. #1: “Don't Bother with Marketing—Just Focus on the Content” Why it's bad: While content is king, marketing is essential to getting that content in front of listeners. Without marketing, even the best podcast can go unnoticed. Better advice: Always include marketing as part of your podcasting strategy.

I know I should do it for health reasons but I'm ready to stop it all together (except walking) for better appetite control, is that a thing?Q: What would you say is the bottom line what's the minimum amount of protein when in a steep calorie deficit? Q: What's something you'd tell someone who wants to start a podcast?Q: How important is changing lifts in cycles? How long do you think you could do the exact same workouts without change and still see progression? Q: Been in maintenance for a few months and was feeling good w/ nutrition and training. But I've been really hungry for the past two weeks. I honored my hunger and fulness cues while continuing to eat like before but gained 5lbs in the last 3 weeks. I still feel hungry though, what would you suggest I do? Q: Favourite grocery store?Q: WHY IS FAT LOSS SO HARD?!?!?!!Q: How important is eating protein after a workout, and if I'm not eating it and that means not reaching my protein goal of the day, would you ever force yourself to eat at any point just to reach your protein goal? Q: How do I change my body from being 'skinny fat' when I do have fat to lose but not necessarily weight, if that makes sense. They explain why certain advice could be harmful to your podcast, as well as share the good advice that they have come across too! KEY TAKEAWAYS You don't need a lot of equipment to get started but you do need some to get audio quality. Never record straight into your phone mic, it will sound awful and people won't listen. There's no need to edit out every ‘uhm' and ‘ahh', filler words are a natural part of conversation, you want your podcast to sound authentic and not over-processed. You can use existing content as a starting point but you don't have to create blog content to use before starting a podcast! A monotone or ‘neutral' voice will turn people off a podcast. Too much planning can be detrimental. It's best to create the content first and then create the narrative. Think about your ideal listener and focus the content you create around them. Building an audience is the most important element of a podcast, you need to work on this first before anything else. Don't do anything that takes away from your podcast content being the best it can be. If you take too much focus away from your core podcast content to do trends, it will be to the detriment of your podcast. If you are only doing something for monetary gain, your audience will see through it. If you need to instantly monetise from the beginning, then focus on sponsorship. Use giveaways to incentivise people to follow and review within a time window you want, to help you rank. BEST MOMENTS "You can get a podcast live within an hour but no one will listen to it” “Finding guests who have been on camera before helps” “Be fluid, dynamic, ups and downs with your tone” “Do the content, build the narrative after” “It doesn't matter if you're in a competitive market if you already have the audience” “If we just do the best podcast episode, the rest just figures itself out” “Give away something that is related to your business” VALUABLE RESOURCES Website EPISODES TO CHECK OUT NEXT Podcast Production - The Cost of the Wrong Choice How to Launch a Number 1 Podcast - Part 1 ABOUT THE HOSTS Kane Baron & Ashley Morris run the UK's first and largest Podcast Agency, Progressive Media. Fear not, as Kristin is here to address some common questions and shed light on the path to podcasting success.   In today's episode, Kristin tackles questions from fellow new and seasoned podcasters.  I'm on anchor which was bought out by Spotify- is that fine to start with? What is podcast management? How does it work? How many downloads should I have to start monetizing my podcast? Is it absolutely necessary to have a podcast microphone?     A common question arises from those who've chosen Anchor, recently acquired by Spotify, as their podcasting platform. Kristin's advice? It's an excellent starting point! However, the real magic lies in having an RSS feed. Curious about when to start making money and how many downloads suffice? Kristin advocates starting early, irrespective of your audience size. It's not just about the numbers; positioning yourself as an expert and promoting your own content yields more success. Do you need an expensive mic? Not necessarily. Quality audio matters, but you don't need to break the bank to purchase a mic. When it comes to podcasting, maintaining momentum is critical to ensuring your audience remains engaged and your content stays relevant but also so that, as a podcaster, you remain aligned with your brand. Kristin sits down with Danielle in an episode packed with valuable insight on keeping the momentum going, especially when it feels tough. Danielle's expertise in coaching leaders has helped her develop a metaphor for maintaining momentum in your business and as a podcaster.    In today's episode, Kristin and Danielle: Start the conversation with a powerful metaphor – treating momentum like a semi-truck. She explained that three critical factors contribute to keeping your podcast on the road: speed, weight, and direction. Discuss aligning your content with your brand and ensuring it resonates with your audience. Stressed the need for a strategic plan. Having a clear direction and consistently executing it are essential to maintaining momentum. Encourage podcasters to check in with their bodies. Where are you now, and how did you get there? Is there a pattern of deviating from your intended direction? What cues indicate the right path?   Sustaining momentum in your podcast requires a holistic approach. It's not just about producing content but doing so with intention and consistency. Danielle's insights on speed, weight, and direction, coupled with the brain science behind focus and execution, provide a comprehensive guide for podcasters looking to thrive. So, check in with yourself, align your material with your brand, and embrace the accountability needed for the long haul. After all, it takes time to build something great. Many podcasters are enthusiastic about monetizing their content and increasing their audience. However, what frequently occurs is that they embark on this journey without a well-defined strategy, doing the right actions but in an incorrect sequence, often resulting in financial setbacks. In today's episode, Kristin had the privilege of interviewing Jay, an experienced brand-building strategist, who shared invaluable tips on crafting an effective paid media strategy.   In today's episode Kristin and Jay dive into: The importance of understanding the metrics, ad spend, and return on investment (ROI) is critical. Before diving into paid media strategies, it's essential to have a clear understanding of your offer's unique value and what you can expect in return for your investment.  Utilizing real-life scenarios and data-driven analysis can help you make informed decisions when it comes to ad spend. Success in paid media is strongly tied to building trust and a genuine connection with your target audience. Jay recommends taking a systematic approach to developing the "know, like, and trust" factor. How not everyone starts with a vast listener base, but Jay offers encouraging advice for those who are just starting out. The first step is simple: keep going, regardless of your initial progress. Building a brand takes time, and success often depends on discipline and perseverance. Creating a successful paid media strategy is not just about pouring money into advertising. It's about understanding your audience, knowing your numbers, and executing your strategy in the right order. Jay's insights provide a clear roadmap for podcasters and brand builders looking to monetize their content effectively. Remember, the key is not just to spend money but to spend it wisely, with a focus on delivering value and building trust with your audience.   Quotes from Today's Episode: “The right thing in the right order is really where we want to go”-Jay “Who are they? Welcome to a crossover episode of a different sort. But first: How are you doing? No, really? I ask because May is Mental Health Awareness Month. So many of us, myself included, struggle to articulate how “off” we feel right now, a cruel joke given that the good folks and orgs behind this month's observance urge us to check in with our emotional, psychological, and social well-being.  I'll go first (yikes!): The only way I can describe my current state of mind is fragile. Can you relate? If you're an entrepreneur, an educator, a corporate employee, a HUMAN, I bet you can. You're okay. I acknowledge and honor your struggle. This episode isn't about mental health per se. It's about creating a secure and attentive environment for guests to feel supported, understood, and willing to engage in vulnerable conversations. The high schoolers behind Power Your Story, my student mentee podcast, beautifully illustrate my point. Their cohort-led interview with Peer Support Specialist and Mental Health Advocate Ashley Scott showcases subtle practices anyone can incorporate to become a better listener and, thus, better podcast host. Co-hosts Elvis, Emerie, Jules, and Alejandro facilitate a space where Ashley feels supported to speak more candidly about her mental health. That safety is mutual: Ashley's comfort leads the students to go off-script, to ask more meaningful follow-up questions, and to add personal observations that make for a more engaging conversation. You can talk about podcasting for marketing, sales, audience growth, or business all day, but this genuine exchange is why I love podcasting; this is where your audience will find value. The last few episodes of Podcast Envy have focused on hosting and content strategies guaranteed to make your show a repeat listen. By creating a safe, intimate container where you and your guests can discuss important topics, you're signaling to the audience that they, too, are seen and heard. I appreciate that not everyone's format is conducive to exploring tough conversations. Still, anyone can follow the Power Your Story lead, regardless of your show's POVs, by remaining present and reflecting back to each guest.
