On this episode we tackle the Rolling Stones 1968 LP Beggars Banquet. 1968 was a tumultuous year for much of the world and a transitional time  for  the Rolling Stones. Their founder and original leader, Brian Jones,  was  increasingly absent due to his drug use, and their long-time  manager/producer Andrew Loog Oldham had grown disinterested in the band  due to his own drug and alcohol use, leaving them to produce their next   album on their own. The result, 1967's Their Satanic Majesties Request,  was widely considered a misstep for the band and the Stones were looking   for a fresh start. They found it with producer Jimmy Miller, who helped the Stones get back to their roots, and found ways to inspire the band to create what most believe to be the first album of their classic period, showcasing acoustic blues and hard-hitting social commentary. While not without its controversies, Beggars Banquet does contain some of the most compelling music this classic band has ever made. Visit us at www.tappingvinyl.com.

It's an epic throwdown for the ages as It Happened One Year wanders into one of the great debates in music history! Sarah & Joe don't exactly see eye-to-eye on these bands' particular outputs in 1967, but with The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and The Rolling Stones' Their Satanic Majesties Request on the turntables, a heady, trippy time was bound to be had by all! After an introduction by friend of the show and Visitors to Nova Scotia star Shannon Hosey, the conversation ducks and weaves through favorite songs and albums from the bands, what The Who was up to in the Summer of Love, how the first text messages the hosts ever sent each other relate to this match-up, why The Doors have remained popular at all, who was the real king of Seattle grunge, and tries to answer the question - who best conquered this year of psychedelic music?

The Christmas effort that year from the group, this album has divided opinion since release, and with a messy history of the issue of it's mono mix, which is the way one should be listening to this rather unique offering from the group? Thankfully we only have the mono and stereo mix to look at once again, so in that case - on with the show!   Happy Listening,   Frederick   Patreon   Email   Instagram   Back to Mono

The phrase “so-and-so band needs no introduction” is incredibly overused, but if there's a single band for whom the phrase holds true... it's the Beatles. However, if there are two bands that it holds true for, it's the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. Many associate the Stones with “good old-fashioned rock and roll,” but that isn't really true. Sure, the band has been locked into its trademark style for several decades now, but in the '60s, they were far more creative than they were often given credit for. And they never ventured further afield than they did on 1967's Their Satanic Majesties Request, a bizarre, stoned, trippy, psychedelic album, filled top to bottom with strange sounds, experimental song structures, and tons and tons of just-plain-weirdness. Fans and critics hated it and the band quickly moved on, never attempting anything in this style ever again and generally pretending that the album doesn't exist. Is the album really that bad, though? Phil sure doesn't think so, and he's here to make the case to Rich, John, and Dan that it's a detour in the Stones discography well worth taking.Cohosts: Phil Maddox, Rich Bunnell, John McFerrin, Dan WatkinsComplete show notes: https://discordpod.com/listen/074-the-rolling-stones-their-satanic-majesties-request-1967Support the podcast! https://www.patreon.com/discordpod

It is their sixth British and eighth American studio album, and their first to be released in identical versions in both countries. The album's title is a play on the "Her Britannic Majesty requests and requires..." text that appears inside a British passport. And it was Merry Clayton who sang "Gimme Shelter" with Mick (not Mary in case it sounded more like Mary). The Rolling Stones (not The Beatles) had Nicky Hopkins playing piano. Also, the Stones did kinda try to become Pink Floyd, however briefly, on Their Satanic Majesties Request (really a poor man's Sgt. Pepper's). Pearl Jam had a problem with CD-era over-length with their albums at times but have gotten better with that in recent years (some words were missing there in the podcast).

Á Beggars Banquet fer sveitin til baka í blúsað rokkið sem sveitin var alltaf þekktust fyrir, en plöturnar tvær á undan, Between the Buttons og Their Satanic Majesties Request einkenndust af sækadelíusku rokki og tilraunum. Þetta er síðasta plata Rolling Stones þar sem Brian Jones er með alla leið. Hann er með í tveimur lögum á plötunni á eftir, Let it bleed, en Beggars Banquet er líka síðasta platan sem kom út meðan hann lifði. Jagger og Richards eiga öll lög plötunnar nema eitt og Brian Jones spilar næstum engan gítar á plötunni, en hann spilar á sítar, munnhörpu, Mellotron og tambúrínu t.d. Beggars Banquet er fyrsta plata Rolling Stones sem upptökustjórinn Jimmy Miller gerði með þeim, en hann átti eftir að gera margar plötur með sveitinni. Platan náði fimmta sæti Bandaríska vinsældalistans og því þriðja í Bretlandi. Hún þykir með bestu plötum Stones og er á ýmsum listum yfir bestu plötur sögunnar. Á Beggars Banquet fer sveitin til baka í blúsað rokkið sem sveitin var alltaf þekktust fyrir, en plöturnar tvær á undan, Between the Buttons og Their Satanic Majesties Request einkenndust af sækadelíusku rokki og tilraunum. Og blúsrokkið krydda þeir á Beggars Banquet með áhrifum héðan og þaðan, með suður amerísku töktum, conga trommum frá Afríku og Asískum hljóðfærum eins og sítar og tabla. Þetta er síðasta plata Rolling Stones þar sem Brian Jones er með alla leið. Hann er með í tveimur lögum á plötunni á eftir, Let it bleed, en Beggars Banquet er líka síðasta platan sem kom út meðan hann lifði. Jagger og Richards eiga öll lög plötunnar nema eitt og Brian Jones spilar næstum engan gítar á plötunni, en hann spilar á sítar, munnhörpu, Mellotron og tambúrínu t.d. Beggars Banquet er fyrsta plata Rolling Stones sem upptökustjórinn Jimmy Miller gerði með þeim, en hann átti eftir að gera margar plötur með sveitinni. Platan náði fimmta sæti Bandaríska vinsældalistans og því þriðja í Bretlandi. Hún þykir með bestu plötum Stones og er á ýmsum listum yfir bestu plötur sögunnar. Þekktustu lög plötunnar eru Sympathy for the Devil og Street Fighting Man. Við heyrum nokkur lög af Beggars Banquet í þættinum. In this episode, I talk about my podcast being available on the Stitcher app, so you can have the show on the go. Please give a thumbs up to increase my ranking and visibility. Thanks for doing that.  It's another 45 year anniversary. This time it's "Beggar's Banquet". One time I was driving in Seattle in my old red pickup and a song came on the radio. I'd heard the Stones all my life, but just the singles. The Chevy started steering itself until I ended up at a CD store. The song was "You Can't Always Get What You Want", and I'd never listened to it closely. It made a big impression on me and started me on a journey.  I used to like a lot of thrash bands, then grunge. I like melodic music, but the Stones were off my radar. The journey was expensive, because I had to buy thirty albums. Same with Bowie. I was buying a CD almost every day and got obsessed with them and Bowie. "Beggar's Banquet" was probably the second album of theirs I got. It is very acoustic. The record cover is simple, white with script writing and said "RSVP". It was like a formal invitation to a nice dinner. The real album cover they wanted to use was refused by the record company but they re-released it with that in 2003 or so. It's a horrible bathroom like in "Trainspotting" and they use graffiti to great effect. It's a sepia toned picture with dirty porcelain. It looks like the Rolling Stones name is written in lipstick. It also says, "God rolls his own". There's an ankh and a peace sign and someone has taco thighs. There's a weird not to Bob Dylan. Inside joke, probably. Kilroy was here, and so was a naked woman. The back cover has the crediting of the musicians and the song titles, randomly written. Somewhere it says, "Where is Spanish Tony?" who was their drug dealer.  It was a transitional album, because the previous album was the strange answer to "Sgt. Pepper's" called "Their Satanic Majesties Request". They were messed up on drugs bigtime. "Beggar's" was a return to their roots, acoustic blues. "Sympathy for the Devil" is the first song, but doesn't fit with the rest, since "Sympathy" is an electric rocker.  Brian Jones had puffy eyes and a bowl haircut. He was always on drugs and fighting women. He couldn't play much because he was so messed up, but he would show up at the studio and want to play. Mick and Keith were pushing him out. Brian would derail their productivity in the studio because he didn't know the songs. So they kicked him out, which is real hard to do, trust me. Brian Jones drowned in his swimming pool about a month later.  About that time, Keef was making friends with Gram Parsons, who died tragically like many others around the Stones. He influenced Keef's country sound. Gram was from Georgia, Bakersfield, and Nashville. He showed Keef how to tune his guitar to an open tuning, which I don't want to explain. It became Keith's signature, and it's the reason I never learned how to play Stones songs because I didn't want to retune all the time. Crazy, since I have a Stones tattoo.  Mick was getting more comfortable as a singer and he sounds like a Chicago blues man. He doesn't get the credit he deserves.  The Stones had a mobile studio built in '68. Mick lived in a country house called "Stargroves". They were tired of being in the studio and wanted to record at their houses, so they made a mobile control unit. That studio recorded dozens of seminal albums by Lou Reed, Marley, Mac, Badco, Zep, etc., etc. They recorded Zep at Headley Grange and Stargroves. They drove the studio around on a flatbed. On the "Physical Graffiti" album, there's a song called "Black Country Woman" and Eddie Kramer was the engineer. A plane flew over and Robert Plant told him to leave it on the recording. The Stones were from the street, working class, and they never forgot that. At the height of their fame, Keef had rotten teef. I hope you liked this episode! My website is www.PaperbackRocker.com.
