Quinton Brock - "There For You," a 2022 single on Shadow Panther. With an ambitious goal to “change rock music forever,” Quinton Brock is clearly not shy about his pursuits. The former singer of the bluesy surf rock duo The Get Money Squad has been slowly releasing singles under his government name over the past couple of years that prove he just might do it too. With a penchant for breezy R&B-tinged indie rock that's typically played by artists of a paler complexion, Brock is on an ever-growing list of black artists reclaiming rock. Highly influenced by Sister Rosetta Tharpe, the lost godmother of rock and roll, who melded spiritual lyrics with electric guitar (shredding long before Elvis gyrated his way to becoming to the “King” of rock n' roll), Brock similarly fuses genres. Our Song of the Day, “There For You,” utilizes surf rock guitar tones with R&B production for a sunny ditty about love. “This song is so close to me,” explains Brock. “An ode to a past love. Jordan Joseph's life was forever altered by his grandfather's words of wisdom.“One of the richest places in the world is a cemetery,” Jordan recalls his grandfathersaying to him. “It is because so many ideas, songs, movies and books go unwritten,unheard or unseen. I didn't want to leave this world not having done the very thingthat's in my heart and I feel like I could change the world, to touch hearts andreinspire love at a time where we need it most. That alone changed everything forme.”Moved by his grandfather's lesson, Jordan dedicated himself to the very thing he'dbeen thinking about every day. The Michigan native decided to go all-in with hisbiggest dream, to become a singer.Although he grew up around music and had plans of being in a group, Jordan felt asthough it was his time to emerge as a solo artist. So, on April 22, 2017 (Earth Day)Jordan released the video for his cover of James Arthur's “Say You Won't Let Go.”Jordan had become enamored with Arthur's voice and gravitated to the song, whichhelped him get through a tough time in his life, which included a break-up.Jordan's next cover was of “There For You,” a Martin Garrix and Troy Sivan song. Helistened to the cut while he was working out and was thinking about the disasters inHouston and Florida, as well as the racial strife consuming America. Jordan took thisas a sign that the universe was trying to bring the world together through love, andnot have as much focus on politics and reality television.While the covers helped soothe his soul, Jordan hit his creative stride with his firstpiece of original material. For his lead single “Cruel Intentions,” Jordan had a poetrymoment where he had to stop and write about the last time he was in love. He builtthe song's lyrics from that poem, resulting in a stirring urban pop record with anR&B lean and a powerful story.“It's about your last true love no longer being in your life and dating someone else,”Jordan reveals. “Although you get over it, you miss them. For me, the record is verytrue. After the breakup I sang about, it took a very long time for me to get over it. Iwas still looking at social media late at night, still texting by accident, hoping for amoment to connect. I was still thinking about the last kiss, the last time we wereintimate. That's the record. It's about missing someone, missing the moment youhad the last time you were in love.”“Cruel Intentions” set the stage for Jordan's forthcoming EP, which he plans torelease soon.Born in Lansing, Michigan, Jordan has plenty of rich material from which to draw forhis poetry and his music. His biological father wasn't in his life as a child, and hewas in a near-fatal car accident when he was three months old. He was dead forseveral minutes, and doctors told his mother and grandmother that it was a miraclethat he was alive, that he wouldn't walk, talk, or live as a normal child. A scar on hishead is a daily reminder of the accident.But Jordan overcame the incident and fell in love with music. His stepfather was aproducer, and he and his family always had a studio in their house. Jordan lovedbeing in the studio with his stepfather and performing with his family.“I liked the idea of performing and having people watch,” Jordan explains. “As a kid,you don't think about the fear of it or being judged. There was so much freedom interms of getting in front of the family and signing and dancing all together.”As a kid, Jordan imagined himself in a group in order to insulate himself with thetype of love he didn't get from his real father. In school, he performed in musicalsand sang in both his church and high school choirs.But when his stepfather went to prison, Jordan's life fell apart. He stopped workingon music and left home. Setting up shop in Atlanta, he pursued acting and modeling.He then moved to Los Angeles to pursue a music career, but signed with a managerwho failed to deliver on his promises. This setback led Jordan to strike out on hisown as a solo artist. He thought he needed to fill the void of love and confidence hefelt by being in a group. Instead, he found that covering songs and now recording hisown material has proven to be the elixir he'd been seeking.“I always felt God's gift to me was my heart,” Jordan reveals. “It is so big and I'msupposed to keep sharing it. The November'19 edition of UP! is a dancefloor 'wet dream', if I do say so myself. The set ranges from popular commercial house to main room club anthems. Kicking it off is the new Gorgon City track "There For You" followed by the awesome Dirty Disco remix of Lizzo's "Good As Hell". Abe Drennan is a Canadian folk singer, educator and social / environmental activist based in the beautiful town of Inuvik, in the Northwest Territories, and over 100 miles into the Arctic circle. Abe released the single "Spirits Soared" earlier this summer - a song written to commemorate the lives of Daniel, 9, Harrison, 5 and Milly, 2, as well as their grandfather, Gary Neville, who were all killed in a car crash, caused by a drunk driver, on September 27 2015, in Vaughan ON. Proceeds from the release of the single go to support the work of the not-for-profit "Many Hands, Doing Good", a charity born out of the tragedy, which supports arts programmes for children who have experienced trauma and also provides a radio broadcasting scholarship in honour of grandfather Gary. Spirits Soared is included on Abe Drennan's second album "Iglu Sessions", which was recorded and produced with Jason Manns in the iconic Igloo Church in Inuvik.
