In a world filled with unseen environmental toxins, it's crucial to understand the common types and sources of these harmful substances that permeate our daily lives. Wendie Trubow, a functional medicine practitioner, sheds light on the pervasive nature of environmental toxins and the importance of evaluating individual risks of exposure. This podcast explores common types and sources of environmental toxins and discusses approaches to assess and mitigate these risks. Types and Sources of Environmental Toxins Wendie Trubow highlights various types and sources of environmental toxins that individuals may encounter in their day-to-day activities. These include: Mold and Water Damage: Trubow emphasizes that one out of every two buildings in North America has experienced water damage, leading to mold growth. Mold exposure can result in a range of health issues, from respiratory problems to skin rashes and gut disturbances. Chemicals in Everyday Products: Common items such as perfumes, construction materials, new cars, furniture, and nail polish emit harmful chemicals. Trubow's personal experience reveals that seemingly harmless products can contribute to a toxic load in the body. Gasoline Fumes and Flame Retardants: Gasoline fumes and flame retardants found in various products, including beds, pose health risks. Trubow emphasizes the importance of testing environments for these toxins. Everyday Habits: Routine activities like wearing shoes indoors, using scented candles or plugins, and dry cleaning clothes introduce additional toxins into our living spaces. Air and Water Quality: Gas stoves, untreated water, and pollution can impact air and water quality, contributing to the overall toxic burden. We rely on the Earth for all of its resources, and without it we die. Therefore, we have no choice but to consume foods that are heavily sprayed with pesticides, insecticides, rodenticides, and herbicides. We sleep on mattresses that are sprayed with harsh chemicals such as flame retardants, that literally require you to off-gas them before using them. We consume fish that has dangerous levels of heavy metals, and last but not least, we hardly do anything to help our bodies get rid of these harsh toxins. In today's episode, Evan is joined by Dr. Wendie Trubow. Recent research reveals that the ingredients in the foods we eat, pollution in the air we breathe, and toxins in the goods we use on a daily basis are changing our bodies in harmful or bizarre ways, and in real time. Leo Trasande, an expert in children's environmental health at NYU, says, “These are chemicals that literally make us sicker, fatter, and poor." Of the over 40,000 in consumer use, less than 1% has been tested for safety, according to the EPA. Our guest, Dr. Wendie Trubow, is a graduate of Tufts University School of Medicine, a board-certified OBGYN, and President of the National Celiac Association. She is a certified functional medicine physician passionate about helping women optimize their health. Key Takeaways: 1. The role toxins play in regard to inflammation, and ultimately the development of many diseases and chronic conditions. Why after trying just about every diet and exercise trend, many people still can't lose weight, especially after a certain age. The role sleep plays when it comes to the body being able to detox properly. How we can lower our risk of being exposed to toxic ingredients in our beauty and cleaning products. The types of ingredients we should try to avoid. Why most people with celiac disease are undiagnosed or misdiagnosed. The healthy food choices that are worth the expense, and where is it okay to save a few bucks. You can learn more about Dr. Wendie at https://fivejourneys.com/. It's because most collagen is missing a critical ingredient. And without this “missing link,” collagen WILL NOT WORK. With this "missing link" you can turn loose, saggy skin –– into tight, glowing, younger-looking skin! So what is that missing link I am talking about? VITAMIN C. Of course, you may know Vitamin C as a powerful immune-boosting nutrient... But did you know Vitamin C is a critical nutrient for anti-aging? You see, Vitamin C it's the "glue" that holds collagen together in your body. And if you're low in Vitamin C, well all of that collagen you're taking is pointless. And here's the thing, not all Vitamin C supplements are created equal… If you're taking Vitamin C in capsule or tablet form, you are missing out on key nutrients as they will simply pass through your body without being absorbed (you can thank your stomach acid for that). However, our friends over at Purality Health have a patented formula that utilizes something called ‘MICELLE LIPOSOMAL' technology which delivers the nutrients into your bloodstream – proven to be 800% more efficient! So, if your skin is looking older than you... And the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, age spots, sagging skin, and otherwise “old-looking” skin frustrates you… Give Purality Health's Micelle Liposomal Vitamin C a try! It's backed by a 180-day money-back guarantee. And today, we have a 30% OFF coupon for you! Just visit puralityhealth.com and use the coupon DRJ to access 30% OFF your purchase today! If you're looking for a way to boost focus, memory, and mental clarity, a powerful blend of medicinal mushrooms might be exactly what you're looking for. Certain mushrooms contain unique polysaccharides called beta-glucans. And a 2012 review on products containing beta-glucans found they can help to naturally increase energy, reduce confusion, boost mood, improve recall and memory, and increase vigor.” My go-to mushroom blend is Paleovalley NeuroEffect. It contains a potent blend of 8 whole mushrooms, without any grains or fillers like most products, and happily touts a beta-glucan level of at least 26%. PLUS, they've included organic coffee fruit extract that gives you the brain-boosting effects of coffee – without the jitters or crash you get with caffeine. Go to paleovallely.com/jockers and grab your NeuroEffect today for 15% off. Are you aware of the environmental toxins that are around you in your everyday environment? [6:32] What is the Cause of Celiac Disease, and Can It Be Reversed? · You're more likely to react physically to wheat from the United States. · Wheat in the U.S. has been specifically bred to grow faster and resistant to drought and weather conditions like wind and rain. · This feature caused the wheat to be more allergenic to most people. · A European breed of wheat, however, even though it still has the particles of gluten, won't give you as many reactions as someone usually would. · Anything that comes into your bloodstream gets an immune response due to its foreign nature. Your body sometimes gets it wrong, and because of the confusion, it mounts an immune response against itself. [16:09] Should You Get a Microbiome Test? Is it worth it? · Dr Trubow loves food sensitivity testing. The one she uses the most is Alletess because they have a lot of testing, great accuracy, testing modality, ease of use, and, most importantly, a good price point. · She likes to do it about every two years with her patients. This is because its easier to compare than when you do it frequently. · She had her food sensitivity testing done during the early COVID era, and she thought they made a mistake with her results because it was too good to be true. · Compared to her test 15 years ago, which stated that she was sensitive to more than 50% of food, it was night and day. · She believes food sensitivity testing is a good guidepost for where you want to proceed. [29:05] How Do Toxins Work? Here's the truth about toxins! · You can't just say what you were or weren't exposed to throughout your day. Toxins do not work that way. · Other than that, it's very difficult to identify what toxins you were exposed to in the first place because they are everywhere. · You cannot escape toxins; therefore, you should just make sure that your detoxification pathways are working properly, so your body can get rid of them efficiently. [41:44] Is Alcohol in Moderation Healthy For You? · There is a study that states that it is a common theme for centenarians to have alcohol present in their diet. · Dr Trubow compares it to having a glass of poison. It might taste good or not, depending on the person but at the end of the day, it will impair some internal organs, and you'll realize that it's not a very good investment if you want to live longer. · Wendie says it's better to drink something like a dry farm wine because it doesn't contain pesticides. She also advises diluting it with another drink and sipping it slowly. · Moderation is to a week, not to a day. AND MUCH MORE!
