What would it be like to grow up in a household guided by the principles of Ayn Rand's Objectivist philosophy? We talk to Things Not Seen radio host Dr. David Dault, of Loyola University Chicago, about being expoed to the ideology of Ayn Rand at a young age. If you've ever wanted to know about Rand's “Objectivist” idea but were too afraid to ask, we'll take you there. Along the way, Brian mispronounces Ayn's name, David shares several fascinating and vulnerable personal stories, and we review the dystopian novella Anthem, ending with the hard question: Are these principles of radical self-interest compatible with Christianity?David Dault: https://www.luc.edu/ips/about/faculty/daviddaultphd.shtml Things Not Seen Radio: https://www.thingsnotseenradio.com/ Ayn Rand on the pronunciation of her first name: https://www.csmonitor.com/Business/2011/1015/Six-things-you-probably-didn-t-know-about-Ayn-Rand/The-name-s-not-Ann The Ayn Rand Institute: https://aynrand.org/ Max Stirner: https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/max-stirner/ Ayn Rand's Anthem: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anthem_(novella) “Paul Ryan and Ayn Rand” (Washington Post): https://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/the-fix/post/what-ayn-rand-says-about-paul-ryan/2012/08/13/fd40d574-e56d-11e1-8741-940e3f6dbf48_blog.html Matthew Sitman, Know Your Enemy: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/know-your-enemy/id1462703434 Jordan Peterson on Ayn Rand: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k9aHYj93xJY
When I hear people talk about boundaries and cutting back on work hours and all of that beautiful sounding work/life balance stuff, I assume the person preaching this has already reached a certain point of success. I think to myself, “Well, of course you can cut back on your work hours now. You already have -insert whatever- going for you, so it's safe to slow down." But what if the very reason for launching your small business in the first place was in service of building an un-hurried lifestyle? I've said many, many times that we must choose our lives first and build our businesses around them, second, but I didn't figure that out until I messed up the order with my first business. On this episode of the Maker's Playbook, Lisa & David Dault share how they are ruthlessly eliminating hurry from their freshly full-time pottery business right from the very beginning.BIG ANNOUNCEMENT:We're hosting our FREE Live Webinar on the 4 Most Common Instagram Photography Mistakes (and how to avoid them) once more this year and just in time for all of that holiday shop update prep! This week I talk with my good friend and brilliant mind, Dr. David Dault. His work is excellent and his own show, Things Not Seen, is a great listen. This is also the season finale! Check it out!
Michelle and guest host, Meggie Lee Calvin, discuss A Man Called Ove: A Novel by Fredrik Backman. Their conversation covers death, grief, joy, and more. From the back cover: "Meet Ove. He’s a curmudgeon—the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. People call him “the bitter neighbor from hell.” But must Ove be bitter just because he doesn’t walk around with a smile plastered to his face all the time? Behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness. So when one November morning a chatty young couple with two chatty young daughters move in next door and accidentally flatten Ove’s mailbox, it is the lead-in to a comical and heartwarming tale of unkempt cats, unexpected friendship, and the ancient art of backing up a U-Haul. All of which will change one cranky old man and a local residents’ association to their very foundations. Fredrik Backman’s novel about the angry old man next door is a thoughtful exploration of the profound impact one life has on countless others. “If there was an award for ‘Most Charming Book of the Year,’ this first novel by a Swedish blogger-turned-overnight-sensation would win hands down” (Booklist, starred review)." About Meggie: "Meggie Lee Calvin (Meg) is an Amazon Bestselling Author, Wife, Mom, Speaker, Podcaster, and Coach who helps her fellow Spiritually-Attuned Go-Getters find confidence and certainty in who they were meant to be. After serving as a Minister to Children and Families at a mainline protestant church for over a decade, she now serves as Director of Engagement for the Institute for Discipleship. Her days include such fun as recruiting participants and instructors for BeADisciple.com, producing and co-hosting the Listening Chair Podcast, coaching content creators in the creation and marketing of their content, and writing and speaking over grit and grace to her fellow spiritually-attuned go-getters and recovering holy-rollers. Her second book, I Am My Own Sanctuary, reads like Seth Myers and the Benedictine nun, Joan Chittister conceived a book-baby. This, “Full-steam comedic rant”, as Dr. David Dault of the NPR Show, Things Not Seen called it, was written for other “recovering holy-rollers” and encourages them to own the power of the Divine within to take back the power from others in their lives. Meg has been featured on NPR, and has served as a workshop presenter at both state-wide and national conferences."

Bonus Episode: Mister Rogers - Things Not Seen Episode with David Dault and Shea Tuttle Fred Rogers fiercely believed that all people deserve love. This conviction wasn't simply sentimental: it came directly from his Christian faith. God, he insisted, loves us just the way we are. In the book, Exactly as You Are, Shea Tuttle looks at Fred Rogers's life, the people and places that made him who he was, and his work through Mister Rogers' Neighborhood. She pays particular attention to his faith—because Fred Rogers was a deeply spiritual person, ordained by his church with a one-of-a-kind charge: to minister to children and families through television. Tuttle explores this kind, influential, and sometimes surprising man: the neighborhood he came from, the neighborhood he built, and the kind of neighbor he, by his example, calls all of us to be. Wendy Mohler-Seib's office, had the kind folks at Fresh Ideas put together some snacks for us, and had our FIRST audience for our THIRD live show! T'was a blast! What does Mr. Rogers have to say about the job you chose? Can any good come from singing hungover in a church choir? What can we learn from the things grief takes from us? All of these and more are explored with our guest, Dr. David Dault. Dr. David Dault is the host and executive producer of the award-winning radio program Things Not Seen: Conversations about Culture and Faith. The show is distributed nationwide through PRX, the Public Radio Exchange. Along with Fr. Dan Horan, he co-hosts The Francis Effect, a podcast that explores contemporary political issues through a lens of Catholic faith. He is a graduate of Columbia Theological Seminary and received his Ph.D. in theological studies from Vanderbilt University. Dr. Dault currently holds teaching appointments at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary and Loyola University Chicago, and serves as a visiting scholar for theology and media at the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago. His book, The Accessorized Bible: Scripture as Commodity and Ubiquity, is forthcoming from Yale University Press, and Dr. Dault is the authorized biographer of Old Testament scholar Walter Brueggemann. He lives with his family in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago. Connect with him at thingsnotseenradio.com/ and follow him @NotSeenRadio The Listening Chair is an outlet of the Institute for Discipleship (IFD).
Welcome To The Neighborhood: A Mister Rogers Tribute PodcastEpisode Eight: The Self-Control of Fred RogersIn 1968 Fred Rogers wrote a song that asks some important questions: "What do you do with the mad that you feel When you feel so mad you could bite? When the whole wide world seems oh, so wrong... And nothing you do seems very right? What do you do? Do you punch a bag? Do you pound some clay or some dough? Do you round up friends for a game of tag? Or see how fast you go?It's great to be able to stop When you've planned a thing that's wrong, And be able to do something else instead And think this song:I can stop when I want to Can stop when I wish I can stop, stop, stop any time. And what a good feeling to feel like this And know that the feeling is really mine. Know that there's something deep inside That helps us become what we can. For a girl can be someday a woman And a boy can be someday a man."-Fred Rogers Like to read? Welcome To The Neighborhood: A Mister Rogers Tribute PodcastEpisode Seven: The Gentleness of Fred Rogers"Most of us, I believe, admire strength. It's something we tend to respect in others, desire for ourselves, and wish for our children. Sometimes, though, I wonder if we confuse strength and other words--like aggression and even violence. Real strength is neither male nor female; but is, quite simply, one of the finest characteristics that any human being can possess."-Fred RogersFrom The World According to Mister Rogers Like to read? There was a time when tattoos were taboo, and you thought long and hard before getting one. Today 20 percent of American adults are inked. Tattoos just don’t carry the stigma they once did—unless it’s a particular kind of tattoo, in a particular place on the body. Fortunately, as our penchant for getting tattoos has grown, so has our ability to get rid of them. In the 1960s researchers started experimenting with lasers to remove tattoos, and since then the technology has dramatically improved. Now we can erase our past, whether it’s a sailor’s bad decision from overseas or a gang identifier that prevents its owner from getting a job—and could even get him killed. Sociologist and CHF research fellow Joseph Klett traces the modern history of tattoo removal through the stories of his father—a retired sailor—and ex-gang members in California.
