A growing list of companies are demanding workers come back to the office for a few days a week. But for some workers, being back in the office reminds them of pre-pandemic times, when they say they regularly suffered slights small and large because of their race, ethnicity, gender or sexual orientation. Some would rather stay remote, and are seeking out jobs that afford them that opportunity. Jennifer Wameling is a transgender woman and details her journey from working in an office and being misgendered and dead named – called by her old name instead of her new, actual one – to feeling happier in a fully remote job. Then Dr. Tiffany Jana, a diversity, equity and inclusion expert and adviser, tells us what companies can do to address the prevalence of microaggressions in the workplace and why remote work may not actually slow one's career growth. Your workplace is a giant learning laboratory, where we can study human behavior and changes over time. And that's exactly what this week's guest, Dr. Tiffany Jana, Doc Jana, has been doing over the last 25 years.Doc Jana does JEDI work with organizations, though not the kind you might be thinking of. JEDI is justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion and according to Doc Jana, most people didn't know what this work even was a handful of years ago.Today, it seems like everyone is talking about diversity work, and they should. But too many leaders and organizations are confused about what it should look like. Performative diversity hiring isn't fair for anyone, and leaders who don't recognize their own biases (which we all have) are part of the problem. What's the solution? Doing the work. And this is just part of my conversation with Doc Jana. We can't keep “checking the boxes;” we need to be clear about who we're serving and how we can best do that by creating benchmarks that make sense, then following through with them. There's always something to learn when it comes to diversity and the evolution of business. And this episode is no exception.About Dr. Tiffany Jana:Dr. Tiffany Jana (they/them/hers) is the founder and CEO of TMI's Portfolio companies, now celebrating 19 years championing justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (JEDI). The Power & Privilege Dynamics of MicroaggressionsIn this episode, herdacious host Lorelei chats with Alejandra Mielke about the role power and privilege play in the ability to micro-aggress against others. Microaggressions are everyday verbal, behavioral, or environmental snubs that demean, diminish, or harm members of marginalized groups through belittlement. “Your English is great,” or, “As a woman, I know what you go through as a racial minority,” might not appear harmful, but Alejandra enlightens us as to why such comments incur feelings of invalidation. As a DEI coach who works with underrepresented minorities to overcome workplace biases, Alejandra teaches us that microaggressions are born out of inherent power and privilege differences, which often creates a suppressive atmosphere for marginalized individuals. However, Alejandra assures us that derogatory comments and behaviors can be avoided when those in power become self-aware, and those on the receiving end respond suitably to their own needs. From accepting feedback to acknowledging that experiences are not one-and-the-same, Alejandra underscores that microaggressions can be halted through better awareness. As Alejandra best explains, power is infinite; and empowered people empower people!Host: Lorelei GonzalezCo-host: Alejandra Mielke, PhD Dr. Alejandra Rodríguez Mielke is a Leadership Coach & Consultant with more than 20 years' experience in the field of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Today's special guest, Dr. Tiffany Jana are diversity, equity and inclusion thought leaders. Her new book, written with co-author Dr. Michael Baran Subtle Acts of Exclusion: How to Understand, Identify and Stop Microaggressions, reframes the concept of microaggressions in order to gain some traction on a problem that hasn't seen much progress in decades. Microaggressions are ways that people unintentionally exclude and alienate others. Even though they may be unintentional, they inflict harm. They can take a cumulative toll when, for example, coworkers repeatedly mispronounce someone's name, or when people cross the street when someone who looks or dresses differently approaches. Research shows that insensitivities such as these wear on victims' physical and emotional well-being. It can be awkward, if not perilous, for subjects of microaggressions (also referred to as subtle acts of exclusion) to set the record straight. Pointing out the offense to a coworker, an acquaintance, or a stranger can raise hackles. Yet, when the subject or an observer speaks up, it can be effective. Ignoring inaccurate assumptions or pretending they didn't happen renders the subject invisible and silently condones the act. Speaking up also helps initiators recognize that we all mess up sometimes, and the only real problem would be not trying to improve our behavior after receiving feedback. Dr. Tiffany Jana is the CEO of TMI Portfolio, a collection of companies working to advance inclusive workplaces. TMI Consulting, a TMI Portfolio company, is a 2018 Best for the World B Corporation. Jana is also the coauthor of Overcoming Bias and the second edition of the B Corp Handbook.
