Today Derek looks at two very important words concerning the human condition: is it spiritual or soulish? Man cannot be both at the same time. There is a divine order in each area of personality. As this order is attained, that person will become wholly sanctified, being preserved complete and blameless when Jesus comes.

Our bodies were bought with a tremendous price to become dwelling places of the Holy Spirit. God wants to live in and through us—in and through you. Today Derek looks at God's purposes for our bodies and to see how He wants us to cooperate with Him in His plans.

God made man of spirit, soul, and body. Today Derek looks at these three parts to define what they are and how they work together. Apart from God, man's soulish nature tries to run things. The divine connection of man's spirit to God's Spirit is necessary for man to become what he was made to be.

Today, we are beginning a new series on our third core value: "We Pursue Wholeness with Authenticity". One of the ways we frequently fall short in life is we don't have the right measurement of success. We measure success by what we are comfortable with or by what we can conceive of. But as followers of Jesus, our measurement of success is nothing short of the Kingdom of God. Today Derek talks about the measurement of wholeness we pursue is the Kingdom of God.

Derek challenges us today with the words of Jesus: “If anyone would come after Me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow Me.” Today Derek presents the practical ways in which we can do this. Are you willing?

Today Derek looks at Abraham and his example as a father. God knew that Abraham would command his children to keep the ways of the Lord. This principle carries on through Deuteronomy, Psalms, and Proverbs. The requirement and responsibility for the family rest primarily on the father. The benefit is that the whole family will be blessed.

Today Derek looks into Proverbs where wisdom calls out to be heard, also revealing the consequences of rejecting knowledge and the fear of the Lord. There is no room for compromise with evil; we must cultivate this fear to gain the Lord’s provision of long life as well as quality of life.

Today Derek begins looking at what the fear of the Lord is, using a picture from the natural that illustrates the spiritual realm. He then explains how this fear is worked out: by having no other gods before the Lord, giving God total preeminence, and an absolutely unique place in our lives.

Today Derek looks at how Jesus resolutely set His face to go to Jerusalem where He knew His crucifixion awaited. He knew this was His Father’s will and that suffering and death were to be the way. But through it all, redemption for mankind would be accomplished. Jesus knew what He had to do, and did not turn from it.

Today Derek speaks on the supernatural power the church received when the Holy Spirit was poured out. A whole new way of praying and preaching began. Praying that shook buildings and got results. Preaching that was done in power and conviction. The normal Christian life was a supernatural life!

We've said frequently that we, as a church, want to join what God is doing. It's a core value that we hold. One of the foundational pieces of being able to join what God is doing involves hearing God communicate with us. If we want to keep in step with the Spirit of God and join God in all times and spaces, we need to cultivate a posture to hear God speak to us. Today Derek talks about how we can orient ourselves to be receptive when God speaks.

Today Derek looks at our attitude toward finances. God knows what a person’s motives are concerning abundance, and He knows how to deal with our motives. We are encouraged to examine ourselves so that our motives are pure and our trust and security come exclusively from the Lord and not in riches.

Today we are continuing our series for Lent called "Have Mercy on Us". We all love good stories of kindness, where someone does something for someone in need. When God calls us to repentance, one of the things He calls us to be is people who love mercy. We are called to be people who not only do kindness but love to do merciful acts for people. We all have plenty of reasons we could give for why we don't do that, but God invites us to experience His mercy so that we might be people who could love to extend mercy everywhere. Today Derek talks about what it means to love mercy.

Today Derek moves this study into the area of faith, the essential condition for receiving anything from God. The demonstration of our faith pleases God, and as we exercise faith in seeking Him, He will reward it. In the area of finances, we show our faith by following His Word and sowing first so that we may reap; but it must be done in faith.

Today Derek looks at why curses come upon people: If we do not listen to God’s voice and do what He says. We can prevent these curses by listening and obeying. Using a number of verses in Deuteronomy 28, Derek brings out some of the results of curses.

Today Derek addresses what Scripture has to say about wealth and abundance. Throughout the Word, wealth and abundance are described to be from God and they are essentially good. In today’s world, wealth and abundance are abused, but that doesn’t make them bad in themselves. God has given us the ability to produce wealth, thus confirming His covenant with us.

Today Derek begins by giving practical guidance in how to appropriate God’s promises. This is not done by following a set formula, but by seeking the Holy Spirit to find from Him what to do in each situation we face. Derek gives steps to follow in obtaining the goal.

Today Derek looks at two more principles; the first being that all God’s promises are now available to us through Christ. Jesus is the channel and it is only through Him that we receive anything from God. The fourth principle is that the promises of God are expressions of His will, so when we pray according to a promise, we have faith to believe that He will answer that prayer.

What does abundance really mean? Today Derek delves into the explanation of abundance, revealing that it means we have all our own needs met and something left over to give others. Jesus could feed a multitude with a few loaves and fish. He also paid taxes by supplying the coins from the mouth of a fish. That was abundance.

Today Derek lays out practical steps in dealing with your tongue. Be honest with God and call your problem by its rightful name: it is sin. Confess it and receive forgiveness and cleansing. From then on refuse sin, say “No” to it, and yield your tongue to God.

Today Derek looks at three specific diseases that affect our tongues we need to be wary of. Excessive talking is common but leads to transgression. Idle or careless words often come out, but we will be held accountable for what we have said. The third disease is gossip or slander— we are not to be the source of it nor the recipient. Don’t let poison in to your body.

We will look at what Proverbs has to say about this, and how it is so closely connected with the fear of the Lord. Today Derek discusses financial security and the role it plays in our lives. Does money have you or do you control it? Financial security doesn’t come through investments in worldly things, but in investing in the work of the kingdom of God. How much are you in for?

Today Derek relates how he was delivered from a spirit of depression as he applied principles from the Word. He exposes all forms of discouragement to be lies from Satan, not from God. The Holy Spirit is the Encourager. He may rebuke us; He may convict us, but He never discourages us.

Today Derek poses the question: How can we get in to the secret place of security, when Scripture declares that it is hidden? There is only one way into it and that is through the cross of Jesus. We are crucified with Christ and our life is now hidden in Him.

Today Derek contrasts those who at the time of their death are united to Christ and those who are not. To the one, there is hope and encouragement, for we will see them again. To the other, there is only despair. Addressing the listener, Derek encourages everyone to commit themselves to Christ.

Today Derek looks at how it was the grace of God that caused the Corinthian church to generously give to the poor in Jerusalem. The welfare of others was paramount as an outworking of grace. Many other truths are brought out from Scripture about giving. What a wheel of turning! As we give it is given back to us, and as it is given to us we can give again.

Did you know grace teaches you things? Today Derek looks at Paul’s letter to Titus, who was a young pastor. It instructs him to teach various groups and how to instruct them. Then Paul brings out that it is grace that does the teaching and how it will speak to your circumstances, giving wisdom and guidance. Be prepared to listen.

Today Derek finishes the week showing how grace leaves no room for boasting—except in what the Lord has done. Abraham had no reason for boasting; his righteousness was accounted to him on the basis of his faith. Our father of faith had nothing in himself and neither do we. All are dependent on God to extend His grace to us, taking the lowest and lifting us to the highest.

How do we learn to rely on God’s grace in our daily living? Today Derek offers three steps to help you walk out your reliance upon grace; affirm that Christ lives in you, put no confidence in your flesh, and rely on Christ’s all-sufficiency. Keep your eyes on the One who is faithful.

It is imperative to understand that we are saved—made righteous—through faith in Christ and not by works. Today Derek explains that if salvation were by works we would have to keep the whole law, all the time. But we are not able—only Christ could do that. We must achieve righteousness by grace, trusting in His death and resurrection on our behalf.

In this series right here at this Christmas season, Derek looks at the gift of grace that has been extended to all mankind. What is it? Today Derek will provide a complete definition of the word, also adding that in Scripture grace means beauty, favor, or pleasure and, in essence, it is the way God looks at us.

We conclude our series, “Seven Pictures of God’s People” by presenting a capsule description of the essential feature of each picture and what is required of God’s redeemed people to fulfill these responsibilities. Today Derek will sum up these seven pictures and draw out the main practical lessons we can learn from them.

Today Derek explains how we are a body of people called to get things done in a time-and-space world. We, His people, are the instrument God uses to work out His redemptive purposes in the world. Don’t miss this talk!

Derek Hill, a Santa Monica native, comes from an automotive family that has left their marks around the world. He is the son of Phil Hill, America’s first World Champion in Formula 1. Derek pursued a career in motorsports for over 10 years, taking class wins in the Daytona 24 Hours, Sebring 12 Hours, and many other driving for the factory BMW M3 Team.
