Welcome to the ongoing mini-series The Orthogonal Bet. Hosted by Samuel Arbesman, a Complexity Scientist, Author, and Scientist in Residence at Lux Capital. In this episode, he speaks with Hilary Mason, co-founder and CEO of Hidden Door, a startup creating a platform for interactive storytelling experiences within works of fiction. Hilary has also worked in machine learning and data science, having built a machine learning R&D company called Fast Forward Labs, which she sold to Cloudera. She was the chief scientist at Bitly and even a computer science professor. Samuel wanted to talk to Hilary not only because of her varied experiences but also because she has thought deeply about how to use AI productively—and far from naively—in games and other applications. She believes that artificial intelligence, including the current crop of generative AI, should be incorporated thoughtfully into software, rather than used without careful examination of its strengths and weaknesses. Additionally, Samuel, who often considers non-traditional research organizations, was eager to get Hilary's thoughts on this space, given her experience building such an organization. ona:v is a Polish-born DJ, producer and promoter with an ear for textural techno and dark electro. A scientist by day and a DJ by night, the Edinburgh-based artist is an integral figure in her locale, both as a standalone name and through event curation. Having built an extensive track collection for several years, ona:v debuted on Edinburgh's club circuit in 2019, with bookings across the UK making up her diary since. On home turf, ona:v plays regular gigs in Scotland's biggest venues, having supported Ben Klock, Isabel Soto, Clouds, Paige, EKATA and many others. Outside of Scotland, she closed for Clouds and Randomer at The Cause, played at London's Risen Festival and in Berlin's Mensch-Meier and About Blank. 2022 saw her Polish debut, and in 2021/22 she streamed from Berlin's HÖR Radio. More recently, for two years in a row, she headlined the basement stage curated by Sisu at Hidden Door — a prolific visual art and music festival in Edinburgh, and performed at Scotland's biggest festival – Terminal V. In 2020, ona:v founded EPiKA, and started promoting EPiKA's bi-monthly party called CiRCLE in Edinburgh. Here, she creates a nurturing environment for beginner female and non-binary DJs playing more underground flavours of electronics, with focus on techno. She also garners a radio residency on London's Threads Radio and is an internal member and a resident DJ with the Sisu crew. Damien Cifelli is a multidisciplinary artist from Edinburgh, now based in London. His work explores a fictitious land named Tarogramma. Referencing the scale and compositions of history paintings and historical sculpture, he has built a detailed culture with its own aesthetic, way of living, and understanding of the world; one that is at once alien, and eerily similar to our own. The paintings are a visual representation of this alternative society - documentary images of a new world. Recent solo exhibitions include ‘Hidden Door 2022' in Edinburgh, ‘Tarogramma' Hackney Downs Studios, London in 2022, ‘Damien Cifelli x Wolf and Badger' Netil House, London in 2022 and ‘Tarogramma Archive' at Dundas St Gallery and Italian Cultural Institute, Edinburgh, 2019. Selected awards include Saatchi Art ‘Rising Star' 2022 and Dazed x Gap New Generation 2020. The mall was brand new, and had 1.4 million square feet with 160 stores… it also startled the Am track NE corridor train line and Woonis Nantuckit River. This cost $500 MILLION and was designed as a mega shopping destination to help stimulate the cities economy. -During the time of construction, a local artist and city resident, MICHAEL TOWNSEND, noticed something unusual about the construction of this building every time he would be out jogging past to the point where it stood out to him. Right by the river there were 2 large walls that almost touched but didn't… as a result, there was a gap in the middle which lead to a large vacant spot. The space was too oddly shaped to be a store, and far too angular to be part of a parking garage.. It looked like some sort of design accident. It was something that Michael noticed, but didn't really look much further into…until 4 years later..
