It's Opening Day for LAFC in 2023, and with that comes rings, banners, an incredible tifo, and, like the previous 5 seasons, 3 points! Here on Episode 234, listen to Filly and Scarf break down the win over Portland. Better yet, for the first time, head on over to YouTube, and you can now WATCH the Defenders do their thing! Before the match, all the pomp and circumstance that comes with winning your first MLS Cup was definitely present. All three pieces of hardware were there, with a matching banner for each. Maxime Crepeau and Gareth Bale brought out the Cup while all the players received their rings. Olly, Will Ferrell, and Aaron Donald were all at newly christened BMO Stadium. It was like the first day of school and graduation day all rolled into one! LAFC roared out to a 3-0 lead behind goals from Carlos Vela, Mahala Opoku, and… GIORGIO CHIELLINI?!? Yes, the man who scored his first professional goal before Erik Duenas or Tony Leone was even born opens his LAFC ledger with our first goal of 2023! Scarf nearly died. Also on this episode, watch as the boys figure out which way to look as they try to look as natural as they can on video. We've got news about Chicho Arango, Mohamed Traore, and Adrien Perez as we look back at the first match in club history. With 4 more matches in 15 days, there's definitely going to be a lot of content coming in a short amount of time, so enjoy 234 while you can!

This episode of Across The Margin: The Podcast presents an interview with Woodstock, New York via North Carolina singer-songwriter Kenny Roby. Roby is the former lead singer of 6 String Drag, which he formed with bassist Rob Keller in the early 1990s, a band which quickly became one of the more notable bands of the Americana movement. The band's style ranged from old style country with a hint of soul and gospel to rock. While 6 String Drag broke up in the late 1990s, Roby continues to make records and play live shows with the Mercy Filter, which includes Scott McCall of $2 Pistols. Roby has released seven solo albums, his latest album — the focus of the episode — is self-titled and written and recorded in Woodstock, NY. Throughout Kenny Roby, the gifted storyteller embraces the spirits of songwriters who once inhabited the very same hills like Fred Neil, Van Morrison, Tim Hardin, Karen Dalton, Bobby Charles, Levon Helm and, of course, Bob Dylan. Over the album's dozen tracks, Roby — supported by a cast including Daniel Littleton (guitars), Jeff Hill (bass), Tony Leone (drums) and superb guest vocals from Amy Helm and the legendary John Sebastian on harmonica — takes us on a sprawling walk through the neighborhood of his mind. In this episode host Michael Shields and Kenny Roby discuss Kenny Roby's genesis and the themes present in the album. They talk about the outstanding players on the album such as Amy Helm and John Sebastian while exploring how living in Woodstock, New York led to who contributed to the album's enthralling sound. They discuss Roby's friendship and working relationship with Neal Casal and the gifts that deep acquaintanceship still award Roby, and so much more. LAFC is finally back at the Cathedral of the Black and Gold, 24 days since our last match at home, ready to take on Real Salt Lake for the second time in 14 days. It would be yet another win for us over Salt Lake, but this one felt much more like the LAFC of old, and you can hear all about it here on Episode 155 of Defenders of the Banc!LAFC celebrated Pride Night in wonderful fashion, with LAFC coming out on the front foot in a hurry. 3 saves and a near miss in the first 5 minutes would be a harbinger of things to come, as a beautiful give and go from Diego Rossi to Jose Cifuentes and back to Rossi for the opener in the 10th minute! LAFC could have been up by at least two or three, but we will take the early lead, 1-0, every single time. In typical LAFC fashion, however, they give up the equalizer not long after. RSL beats the Black and Gold on the counter, with perfect passing (and a little luck) from Damir Kreilach to Everton Luiz to Aaron Herrera, and just like that, we are level. Scarf almost got the own goal that he predicted, Carlos banged one off the post, and Cifu somehow misses a wide open net after Kim Moon-Hwan's moment of sheer brilliance, and LAFC enters the half tied at one. David Ochoa was special, but LAFC needed to find the winner. In the second half, RSL would get their first, and only, real opportunity of the half in the opening minute. It came from Kreilach, of course, but Romero, with a little help from Farfan and Murillo, was up for the task. Several near misses and another nice save from Ochoa brings us to the 58th minute, where the birthday boy, Raheem Edwards earns LAFC a present of their own, a PK off a handball from a blistering shot inside the box. However, it still wasn't meant to be (yet!), as Ochoa dove to his left to stop a relatively innocuous attempt by Carlos Vela. Still level. Several subs for both sides, including the return of Chiqui Palacios in the 75th minute, take us to the 78th minute. It's world-class finding world-class, as Kim Moon-Hwan finds Carlos Vela with an absolute pinpoint cross from at least 30 yards away. Despite Ochoa cutting off seemingly every angle, the captain shoots a laser beam over the top of Ochoa's head and into the back of the net! Just like that, LAFC is in line for 3 points and their first three-match win streak since 2019. LAFC, despite David Ochoa's best efforts, wins 2-1 in a match that could have just as easily been 6-1 or 7-1. It was a complete effort for LAFC. Also on this episode, we chat Gold Cup results for both the US and El Tri as we welcome back Brian Rodriguez into the 18. D9U releases a shoe, Tigers collab on a beer, Filly tees up Scarf perfectly as he works the GLA into the pod not once but twice (!), Dio is still without a club, and Tony Leone nets his first professional goal. It's Scarf who rants on this episode after Filly runs down the upcoming schedule. Truly, everything is possible here on Defenders of the Banc! You'll be hearing a lot of us over the course of the next few weeks, with three more matches in 10 days. And it will also be right here on Defenders of the Banc where you can hear recaps, breakdowns, and banter the night after every episode of Season 2 of Ted Lasso, starting July 23 on Apple TV! Lots of fun and lots more to come, but until then, enjoy Episode 155!

Season 4 is almost upon us, and, with the preseason about to begin, Filly and the Scarf are here to catch you up on all the Black and Gold news from the past few weeks! The biggest news of the last 11 months or so MUST be the potential return of at least some supporters to the Cathedral of the Black and Gold, Banc of California Stadium, starting on April 1. As long as numbers continue to progress in a positive direction, we can expect at least some of us to be there for our boys!LAFC announced a rather abbreviated preseason schedule, featuring an intrasquad scrimmage and two games against the Revolution. It's the first Scheduling with the Scarf segment of 2021!LAFC also finalized two incredibly important partnerships, one with the Las Vegas Lights of the USL and another with Real So Cal and their youth squads. The pipeline has now been extended through Southern California and even into the Nevada desert! LAFC brought in Steve Cherundolo to head the USL club, bringing a USMNT and Bundesliga legend's pedigree to the pipeline. From youth opportunities, to the Academy, to USL, and on to the parent club, the Black and Gold system is stronger than ever. We couldn't be happier for our Athletic Training staff, Sean and Luis, as they were named Staff of the Year according to PSATS. Our first captain in club history, Laurent Ciman, retired to join Thierry Henry's staff on Club de Foot just in time to be deserted by the leader of the Foot Clan, becoming the second former LAFC member to join the coaching ranks this offseason. (Benny!) On the player news front, Uruguay hopes Diego Rossi and the recently loaned Brian Rodriguez can give their national team a lift. It hasn't exactly been smooth sailing for Rayito in Spain, either. it's a pair of U-23 national team call-ups for Tomas Romero (El Salvador) and Marco Farfan (USA). Hopefully, they'll still be on the final rosters for their respective countries when they are announced March 8. Our history-making trio of teens, Erik Duenas, Tony Leone, and Christian Torres, were all called in to join El Tri's U-17 camp, marking another first in their wonderful careers. Finally, our eMLS stud, RemiMartinn, makes one more push for the eMLS Cup in the Last Chance Qualifier, beginning March 16. We are back and couldn't be happier. Our fans are getting healthier, our club is practicing again, and we are together in World Famous Filimonster Studios for another episode! Let's get back to the Banc!

5 matches in 19 days. But for some reason, it has seemed like an eternity. LAFC, mired in their worst stretch of play in their young history, travel to Sandy, Utah. Rio Tinto Stadium has been a welcome sight for LAFC, as the Black and Gold have taken all three prior matches by an aggregate of 10-1. However, much like this season as a whole… heck, much like 2020 as a whole, today’s result would be very, very different. Bob shook some things up against RSL, giving four players their first career starts for LAFC: Danny Musovski, Andy Najar, Bryce Duke, and Mohamed Traore. The latter two, just teenagers, 19 and 18 years old, respectively. You could argue that the 18 (23, actually, with the COVID rules) was more familiar to LAFC supporters than the starting squad: Eddie Segura, Latif Blessing, Tristan Blackmon, Bradley Wright-Phillips, and Diego Palacios. We catch a glimpse of the future as well, perhaps, with Erik Duenas and Tony Leone making their first-ever MLS active rosters. The ball just isn’t bouncing LAFC’s way during the past handful of matches, and nowhere else was that more evident than in two plays during this match, one to begin the first half, and the other to begin the second. Identical plays, balls pinballing around the box, with completely different outcomes. In the first half, the ball barely eludes Danny Musovski and RSL is able to clear. In the second half, the ball finds Justin Meram, and RSL has a backbreaker. A rough one for Jordan Harvey, to be sure, conceding a penalty to Albert Rusnak, and the rout was on. LAFC fall, 3-0, and limp home to take on Portland in just 4 days. Also on this episode, Filly and the Scarf show some love to a new sponsor and a new kit. This Day In LAFC History taps into a history-clinching match that LAFC didn’t even play in, a member of Black and Gold past changes addresses. Find out the difference between a fan and a supporter, and you won’t believe who Scarf thinks was the player of the match against Real. Here come the haters! But don’t worry, the boys will give you more reasons to “at” them in just 4 days, on Episode 117.

053: Mark MarshallGood morning! This is Play It Like It’s Music. I’m Trevor, thanks for listening. On Wednesday, August 26th of 2020 Music is not content! It’s connection.A quick note: last week’s episode may not have reached you since there was a big traffic burst here on Substack and the whole thing got gummed up for a day, which happened to be the same day I was sending you my regular Wednesday edition. In case you did not get the email, you can still look at the post and listen to the episode, it’s right up on the site where it should be. And the podcast is also in your player’s feed like normal. I put together a great chat with Daniel Wright, and it’s really worth hearing.[photo by Abby Ahmad]I’m in California here with the rolling brownouts and the heat storm, it’s been in the low 100’s here for a week straight. Hard at work on multiple projects as usual, but I think I’m settling into a good groove here. It’s a trip to hold myself to account with everything I start, but I’m getting better at completing the things I start. And it’s partly because I’m really liking some of the stuff I come up with. There’s this thing I’ve been alluding to here and there called the Lazy Cello Suite, which isn’t an entirely original work but I think it’s safe to call it a remix. I basically took the chord changes of the Bach G Major cello suite and made my own notes, played in the way I like to play. It’s lazy-sounding in a good way, a way that doesn’t make you work too hard as a listener. I’m going to make a recording of it soon on my porch and put that out on Bandcamp.I’m also working on some production prototypes for an album which is moving forward. I’m working with last week’s guest, Daniel Wright. It’s still in a very early stage but the energetic read is good on the thing, so stay tuned for more on both of those projects as they develop.Today I’m happy to share my conversation with Mark Marshall. He’s a great guitarist, and very much a connoisseur of guitar tone. In fact, he has an entire website dedicated to the Anatomy of Guitar Tone, which you can find at anatomyofguitartone.com. But he’s much more than a mere gearhead. I’ve worked with him as a producer and in bands, I’ve also admired his work on stage for many years. He’s got that certain presence, one of total focus where you can just tell he’s taking exquisite care with his sounds, and we the listeners benefit tremendously. He’s not just a local cat. He’s logged tens of thousands of miles on the road with the likes of Amy Helm and Sister Sparrow. He collaborates with his wife Abby Ahmad in a great rock/blues band called Fife & Drom, and he’s got his own power guitar trio with Adam Minkoff and Tony Leone called Future Relics. We hear about what it was like growing up in rural Pennsylvania near Scranton / Wilkes-Barre. Mark had to take a long journey through darkness into the light, navigating issues with an overbearing collaborator who also happened to be his father. The man had to move mountains to get to where he is today, and just before the Pandemic hit he was hitting the gas on his composition work, so we’ll get a taste of that as well.Once again, if you like the show and you think it deserves a wider audience, do us a solid and share the link with a friend:Or better yet: listen to the Playlist we just started with all the guests and pass that around too. The Sound Podcast with Ira Haberman

Kenny Roby is a singer-songwriter who has had an accomplished 20 year career that includes his former band 6 String Drag. They were a southern alt-country outfit who were part of that scene that included Whiskeytown, The Drive by Truckers, Drivin’ & Cryin’ amongst others in the mid 90s. Since the dissolution of 6 String Drag, Kenny has been on his own, making records, and trading songs with Neal Casal. In fact, Resevoir was to be produced by the late Neal Casal who passed a month before the production was to begin.  Dave Schools of Widespread Panic fame, but a great record producer in his own right, who knew of Kenny’s work through Neal, stepped in to produce the record with Jesse Aycock, John Lee Shannon, Jeff Hill and Tony Leone providing the backing band. The record is exquisite and deals with themes that were very personal to Kenny including his own mental health and substance abuse struggles, the break up of his marriage and ultimately getting through those challenges in hopes a better life.  We caught up with Kenny Roby to talk about the album, and our conversation started when I asked him about how tragic Neal Casal’s passing was for him personally.  First Song: 00:56: Old Love  Interview Begins: 04:38 Extro Song: 31:34 - I'm Gonna Love Again See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

CHRIS ROBINSON BROTHERHOOD was formed by the iconic frontman of rock and roll powerhouse band The Black Crowes in 2011 and is now in the midst of one of their most prolific periods to date. Overspilling with stunning musicianship and infectious energy, the band intertwines country, blues and psychedelia, even channeling freewheeling 60s' folk. Their stellar new album, Barefoot In The Head, marks the CRBs third studio release in just two years, and it finds them pushing boundaries and breaking new ground with more joy and wonder than ever before. The album showcases the continued growth of Robinsons songwriting partnership with his bandmates (guitarist Neal Casal, drummer Tony Leone, keyboardist Adam MacDougall, and bassist Jeff Hill) and revels in the kind of adventurousness that can only come from five artists tuned into the same sonic wavelength. ACOUSTIC EIDOLON is what happens when you cross a guitar with 2 necks and a cello with attitude. This duo featuring Joe Scott on double neck guitjo and Hannah Alkire on cello are from Colorado and have graced stages throughout the US, Europe, Australia and Canada. With eleven CDs and a DVD to their credit, these masterful artists continue to captivate audiences throughout the world with their signature “new acoustic sound and boundless possibilities in blending Celtic, Folk, World & Latin music influences. They have released 2 new CDs since their last WoodSongs appearance including the latest, 'A Tree Finds Its Voice,' which features the new cello and guitar made from the same piece of wood. WoodSongs Kid: Jakarah Ritter is sixteen-year-old powerhouse vocalist from Lexington, Kentucky.
