Steve Kilbey from the Church called Clairsy & Lisa for a chat, the band have just announced a show at the Astor Theatre in November. He also told Clairsy & Lisa how Under The Milky Way made it onto the Donnie Darko soundtrack without his knowledge.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In this episode Alex Stolz sits down with Pierre-Alexandre (Alex) Labelle, co-founder of Under the Milky Way, the global digital distribution company helping studios, filmmakers and rights holders bring their films to VOD platforms worldwide. Alex shares his journey in the film industry, from the early days of digital distribution to working with major platforms like Apple, Google, and Amazon. He dives into the industry's evolving landscape, discussing the rise of SVOD, the ongoing relevance of transactional VOD, and the growing impact of AVOD and FAST channels (although cautioning that this may be less than has been claimed!). The conversation also explores Claudia, Under the Milky Way's latest initiative, designed to streamline the distribution process for independent filmmakers through automation and strategic insights. Alex emphasizes the importance of data in shaping film distribution strategies and how AI could revolutionize industry decision-making. Closing with a fascinating analogy comparing the predicting the future to a game of Tetris, Alex leaves listeners with thought-provoking insights on how filmmakers and distributors can adapt to a constantly shifting digital environment.
“Lived Through That” is the companion podcast to my book where I look at influential musicians of the 80s and 90s and where they are today. On this podcast, we'll delve deeper into a single pivotal moment in the lives of some of the artists I feature in that book, as well as other artists I love and admire. The stories they tell are open, honest, and inspiring. This week, I am excited to bring you Steve Kilbey, vocalist and founding member of the Australian band The Church. He also wrote their iconic hit, “Under The Milky Way.” His career is long and storied and we talk about a few of his pivotal moments – TEAC audio machines, heroin addiction, agism, and finding excellence in your work. You can find what Steve's up to on his web site here or on The Church's web site here. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
For our 150th episode (and thanks to all of our loyal listeners in the UK, the Netherlands, the US and around the world for helping us get this far) we are pleased to welcome a singer/songwriter who we grew up watching on MTV with his band The Church - Steve Kilbey. For more than 40 years Steve's led Australian psychedelic rock band The Church and has returned to the US to promote their latest record, The Hypnogogue, which Steve admits could be their 25th or 36th record - it's hard to add them all up. The Church rose to prominence in the US in 1988 thanks to MTV's 120 Minutes and college radio as their album Starfish received exposure thanks to the hit Under The Milky Way. But the band had already seen success in their home country with songs like The Unguarded Moment and Tantalized and we discuss the difficulty Steve has in curating a setlist which is satisfactory to him, the band and their fans. Steve pulls no punches talking about the business, his "too cool" attitude when doing TV interviews back in the day, his reluctance to release live albums and regales us with stories including one when two fans broke into the dressing room to demand he play one more song. Steve is an incredible songwriter and a very genuine person and you'll hear the joy The Wolf & Action Jackson had spending a little time talking with him. Adrian Belew - Young Lions In this episode, we review a solo album by a guy whose solo work should be more well-known. He's worked with an assortment of major artists but he's become a major artist in his own right. Our tracks of the way are The Church's "Under The Milky Way", Thunderclap Newman's "Look Around" and Lee's song "Spicy Tamarind." Cheers, everybody!
En el caso de The Church su gran éxito Under The Milky Way (1988). On today’s podcast episode I’ll be speaking to Steve Kilbey, best known as the vocalist, bassist, and primary songwriter for veteran Australian alternative psych group The Church. With The Church, Kilbey has generated a whopping 25 studio albums since their formation, beginning with 1981’s Of Skins and Heart. The band are most notable in pop culture for their hit single Under The Milky Way off their 1988 album Starfish, but as diehard fans will tell you, that’s just a drop in the ocean to their immersive, impressive and expansive body of work, including their masterful 2017 album Man, Woman, Life, Death, Infinity. But Kilbey has also had a lengthy solo career, releasing 14 eclectic and stirring albums., including Earthling, The Idyllist and Sydney Rococo. And now he’s back with Eleven Women, one of his strongest solo efforts to date. In today’s interview Kilbey discusses the origins and creative process behind the new album, the challenges of being a musician during the Coronavirus pandemic, future solo work, his upcoming album with The Church, and a stirring account of a childhood experience with extraterrestrials. So check out the interview and stick around afterwards when I’ll be playing Woman #9, a song off the new album. Click here to listen to the interview via Apple Podcasts and click here to listen via Spotify, or listen via the RadioPublic embed or other podcast platforms at the bottom of this post. You can purchase Eleven Women via Kilbey's Instagram page at http://instagram.com/stvklby, and you can keep abreast of all his creative endeavors via his website thetimebeing.com. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/slis/support
Steve Kilbey is the founding member and lead singer/bassist of, The Church. Steve, along with Peter Koppes and Nick Ward, formed The Church in the late 70's. The Church scored a Top 40 Hit in 1988 with, Under The Milky Way. Steve has written somewhere in the neighborhood of 2,000 songs and has released 14 solo albums. Steve, overcame heroin addiction in 2000. Always open and candid, Steve doesn't disappoint in this episode! Listen to Steve, as he shares stories about The Church, Marty Wilson Piper, what a typical day for him is like in Australia, as well as his thoughts on The Cure, INXS and a host of other bands. Steve also talks about the upcoming release of a new Church record, future tour and so much more! As a Steve Kilbey fan, I've listened to a ton of interviews with Steve, but this might be the most open, I have ever heard him. Never one to "sugar coat" and always speak his mind, this conversation is no exception. Expect several F-Bombs to be dropped. Enjoy!
Frané Lessac (@franelessac) shares UNDER THE SOUTHERN CROSS and UNDER THE MILKY WAY. Frané has made many beautiful books, but it was Traci Sorell’s debut picture book, WE ARE GRATEFUL: OTSALIHELIGA, in 2018 that really made me sit up and pay attention. Today Frané brings two picture books about the stars, both sharing a U.S. publication date. Frané tours the northern skies over our United States in UNDER THE MILKY WAY, highlighting different activities and occurrences that happen beneath the stars. In UNDER THE SOUTHERN CROSS she turns to the southern skies and a series of stars that point to True South. There are tiny turtles scrambling down the beach, shooting stars, clouds of bats, Nations coming together, and even a staircase of gold, and they are all visible beneath our skies. It’s enough to make anyone want to get out a night and experience all that’s going on in the world. You can access even more information about this book and its author by visiting www.matthewcwinner.com/podcast. Thank you to this week's sponsor: Libro.fm And to the generous support from our Patrons.
This week we chat about the "one hit wonder" & discuss whether the moniker should even exist. Although sometimes fitting, this tag can be downright offensive to artists who've moved well beyond a single song. Fun fact: The Wonders only had one hit
Australian rock legends the Church have been an active part of the alternative scene for over 35 years. Their biggest global success may have been when "Under The Milky Way" reached #24 on the US pop charts in 1988, but they've never gone away and even released their 25th album, also one of their best, Man Woman Life Death Infinity last year.
