Last episode, we took a look at Diamond Dallas Page's 1999 film - now, we take a look at Goldberg's! Budget cuts threaten the Universal Soldier program...despite an array of scientific accomplishments that would make your head spin. Supercomputer SETH doesn't exactly take it well. Can former UniSol Luc Deveraux (Jean-Claude Van Damme) save the day? Will Goldberg be better used than DDP was in his film? Will the franchise's new reporter lady live up to the original? For all this, plus more broken plate glass than you can shake a stick at, let's go to the movies! 171 - We have reached an interesting turning point in our JCVD journey. This film would be the last theatrically released Van Damage joint until 2008's JCVD. So into the valley we go.... BUT despite this film not really being a JC highlight, we find some pretty interesting things to dive into, from the Soprano's, to the epic love story that is JC x Gladys, and even a semi-deep dive into heavy metal band GWAR! So, you know, there is something for everybody here.Continue the conversation over on our 'Friends of the Show' Facebook group here

This week on Sucktastic, Jean Claude Van Damme returns as Luc Devereaux to try to defeat a rogue Unisol, The U.S. government, and Bill Goldberg. Sounds like a pay-per-view in late 90's WCW. We continue JCVD January with a movie that tries to Crush 'em! It's Universal Soldier: The Return, this week on Sucktastic Cinema!

Welcome to Low-Carb Movie Plots! I'm your host KZURC, and today we are covering Universal Soldier: The Return! This is a 1999 science fiction action film produced by Jean-Claude Van Damn who also stars in the film as Luc Deveraux. The film also stars Michael Jai White, who briefly appeared in the first film as a soldier, and Bill Goldberg. This is a sequel to the much-loved Universal Soldier. The film received negative reviews and made over $10 million in the U.S., I was surprised it made it to theaters, as I saw it on DVD. At this point, Van Damn was grasping onto fame and coke money. But nonetheless, as a teenager, I enjoyed watching this. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Universal Soldier The Return is one return of a franchise that was less appreciated by many but for sure is one MUST WATCH movie, even despite it's flaws. The movie has Jean Claude van Damme and his great fighting style, we got a rising star at the time legendary Michael Jai White, Bil Goldberg who is just being silly as heck...listen about it. Bust my balls if you have to for all my judgement but if you turn off the critical look, you will enjoy this movie for sure. I know I DID! Writer Tom Lorenzo joins us to tear apart Universal Soldier: The Return, a sequel that never should have been made. After an alright first film, and two made-for-television disasters, the Universal Soldier franchise seemed to be dead in the water. So why was 45 million dollars thrown at a sequel? Must have been a pretty great script, right? Wrong. Universal Soldier: The Return is an absolute mess, and there is plenty for us to discuss when it comes to the questionable choices made at every turn, but this stinker of a movie mostly acts as the perfect diving board for conversations on the decline of the action movie genre, Jean-Claude Van Damme's career (and macho-man actors in general), and how a great B-Movie concept can be squandered on a forgettable film.Find Tom at: twitter.com/ragingbull1990Patreon: patreon.com/podcastlikeits1989Twitter: twitter.com/podcastlikeitsInstagram: instagram.com/podcastlikeitsReddit: reddit.com/r/PodcastLikeIts See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Imagine the first Universal Soldier film without any of the interesting character development and social commentary. Imagine instead all of the camp of the first film turned up to 11, That's what The Return delivers! An exciting lean action romp. This film is not without its merits though. It has some Michael Jai White, some Bill Goldberg, and most exciting of all lots of really silly nümetal. In our 188th episode we're talking spine #218 in the Criterion Collection: Jean-Pierre Melville's LE CERCLE ROUGE from 1970. First RJ talks about THE SUBSTITUTE, and Jarrett watched UNIVERSAL SOLDIER: THE RETURN, PROJECT SHADOWCHASER 3000, and a bunch of internet docs about weirdos (and continues on with CHRIS CHAN: A COMPREHENSIVE HISTORY). Universal Soldier The Return (1999) is really Universal Solider IV except this movie wants you to treat it like Universal Soldier II. Luc Deveraux is back, this time completely stripped of his Universal Soldier powers to battle the likes of Michael Jai White and Bill Goldberg. It’s a mess… and a delight.
Filmmakers On: Van Dammed! A six-part limited series podcast on the career of Jean-Claude Van Damme. Over the course of the series we will take an in depth look at Van Damme’s career (so far) from his early cameos in “Missing in Action” and “Breakin” to his transcendent run as Jean-Claude Van Johnson on Amazon. Along the way we will attempt to pin down just what it is about Van Damme that makes for such a compelling action figure. Episode 5 – The Dark Years Host J. Horton and guest Aaron Mento discuss Jean-Claude 1998 to 2008, “Knock Off”, “Legionnaire”, “Universal Soldier: The Return”, “Inferno”, “Replicant”, “Derailed”, “In Hell”, “Wake of Death”, “Second in Command”, “The Hard Corps”, “Until Death” and “The Shepard”. JCVD found himself mired in direct to video cycle, “Universal Solider: The Return” was the only movie to find a limited U.S. theatrical run, even though he started to fall off the mainstream movie going audiences’ radar, he still continued to take creative risks and not mail in any performances. We start the new year off with our review of the Sequel to the hit Universal Soldier..... So sit back as we continue our journey through the filmogrophy of Mr. Jean-Claude Van Damme. Until next time.. Keep it Geeky!!!
For two guys who do a B Movie podcast, it’s rare to come by a Jean-Claude Van Damme movie we haven’t seen. But leave it to our faithful listeners to find such a movie and a very weird one at that. Just as JCVD started losing some steam with duds like Double Team and Universal Soldier: The Return, he starred in one of his first direct to video features, Inferno (aka Desert Heat). This is not only a very weird movie that starts off with a very serious tone and ends up being a comedy of sorts, but it also has Pat Morita spew out a line I never thought I would hear him say. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/bmoviebreakdown/support
