Fresh from the highs of our 150th episode, Ryan and Brady sit down to discuss Enterprise's version of Devil in the Dark, which heavily features a snot monster. Real talk? Why is this episode called "Vox Sola"? In Latin, that means "lone voice," which I guess sort of makes sense because it's absorbing all of them into its being, but there are still plenty of voices trying to keep that from happening. Feels like a first draft!

Fresh off last week's desperate attempts, we've got another bit of stunt-casting and then a really...interesting alien design. First up, the writers were really afraid we missed their subtle metaphor when they invite Archer's old buddy Al to play an evil jailer in "Detained". After that, there was a much easier solution to "Vox Sola" but then the episode would've been 15 minutes long. Also this week: sloppy endings, water polo, and Data! [Timestamps: Detained: 00:48; Vox Sola: 34:27; Data: 1:03:10] [I'll take this android over Apple ANY day: https://www.tumblr.com/sshbpodcast/735349348912742400/character-spotlight-data?source=share]

A fibrous, web-like alien creature (more like the mood slime from Ghostbusters 2) comes aboard the ship and several of the crew becomes entangled in it including Archer and Trip, and it seems Hoshi is the only one who can try to communicate with the creature. Once again, it comes down to Hoshi to save the day. Do you think she's got the right stuff? contact us - podcastnx01@gmail.com

“Vox Sola” 20th-anniversary reflections. After Archer and his crew completely blow a first contact by eating in public, an unusual alien life-form is left behind aboard the Enterprise and sets up home in the cargo bay. When it begins wrapping crewmembers in its silky white web, Reed and Hoshi begin racing in different directions for a solution and movie night gets completely spoiled. In this episode of Warp Five, hosts C Bryan Jones and Matthew Rushing continue our 20th-anniversary retrospective that takes you through all of Star Trek: Enterprise, one episode at a time. In this installment, we explore “Vox Sola” and how the story approaches the importance of communication, the nuance of language, and cross-cultural misunderstanding from many angles. We also discuss the attempt to bring a truly alien alien to the franchise whose stated goal is to seek out new life and new civilizations. "Now hear this. Now hear this. On this week's episode of Kirking Off -Archer, Hoshi and the rest of the Enterprise crew grapple with a first contact blunder with the Kreetassans which leads to some interesting character dynamics between T'Pol and Hoshi as well as a monstrous stowaway that's taken over one of the cargo bays with it's viscous and gewy presence. Reed and Phlox have differing opinions on how to handle this invasive creature, but time is running out as multiple crew members including Archer and Trip have been ensnared by the monster's tendrils. Is T'Pol being a little too tough on Hoshi? Will Archer's love of water polo send Dean and Nathan into the deep-end for far too long? And how will the Enterprise crew contain and evict their unwanted passenger? I present to you, Vox Sola, from Star Trek: Enterprise." Joelle Bekhazi Interview.     Captain Archer sometimes feels like the most blue collar Captain, drinking beer and watching sports. In the episode "Vox Sola," we learn about his love for water polo, which is a sport that doesn't seem to be highlighted in the spotlight as often as other sports.  Joelle Bekhazi was named to the junior national team at age 16, going on to compete at the 2005 and 2007 World Junior Championships. After moving up to the senior ranks, she helped Canada win silver at the 2007 and 2011 Pan American Games. Bekhazi was part of two major medal-winning teams in 2009 as Canada captured a first-ever silver in the FINA Water Polo World League followed by silver at the FINA World Championships. Among her individual accomplishments are being named to the All-Star Team at the 2010 FINA World Cup and earning MVP honours at the 2013 UANA World Championship Qualification Tournament. Bekhazi played collegiately at the University of Southern California. In her first year in 2009, the Trojans lost in the NCAA final but a year later they brought home the victory, making Bekhazi the first Canadian to ever be a part of an NCAA champion water polo team.  In this episode of Warp Five, hosts Brandi Jackola, Brandon-Shea Mutala, and Patrick Devlin speak with Joelle Bekhazi who is a member of the Women's Canadian National Water Polo team. We discuss the training involved, where she has traveled, and the most challenging game that she played. Chapters Intro (00:00:00)  Welcome, Boomers! (00:01:56)  Welcome, Joelle! Warp Five: A Star Trek Enterprise Podcast

Friendship and fellowship is important for people's general health and well-being. All of the Star Trek series have shown some sort of interaction between the members of its crew on screen in varying ways. The Next Generation had poker, Deep Space Nine had Vic's lounge, Voyager had Sandrine's and the resort program, and Enterprise had movie night. Since the invention of home video releases of films, many fans of movies have participated in an event know as "Movie Night!" People gather together in a group, watch a movie, and then discuss the film in a casual conversation. Sometimes they even go out for a slice of pie while they discuss.    Chapters Intro (00:00:00)  Welcome, Boomers! Essential Enterprise Season One.    In every season of every Star Trek show, there are some episodes that stand out more than others — but which ones are essential to their respective shows as a whole? We begin a new four-part series where we look at each episode of each season and determine if they are essential to the overall narrative of the show. In this episode of Warp Five, host Brandon-Shea Mutala is joined by Richard Marquez of Earl Grey and Brandi Jackola of Live From the Edge to analyze the first season of Enterprise and select the absolutely essential episodes that they feel you must watch.   Last time we finished up Season 1 of Enterprise, so this week we’re going to take a quick look back at the series so far; hand out awards for “best of” and announce the winner of the Enterprise Trivia Cup. Joe took home the gold with a sizable lead. Though Jason promises his victory will be short lived as we get into the later seasons of Enterprise. Enterprise has a lot of ups and downs and our opinions on the show are incredibly varied. Joe and Josh are of the mind that this first season was the best first season of any Star Trek that came before it, while Jason feels it is easily one of the weakest of the Star Trek franchise. That's not to say there weren't highlights that we all shared an affinity for. Broken Bow is at least up there when it comes to quality of pilot episodes, rivaled perhaps by The Next Generation's "Encounter at Farpoint", though Voyager's Caretaker came up as well. And we all agreed that the season finale, Shockwave Part One, was one the better episodes of Enterprise, certainly for season one. A few host favorites came up, Unexpected, Shuttlepod One, Rogue Planet, Andorian Incident, Cold Front, and Vox Sola. Season one of Enterprise had a few low points. Travis Mayweather never really took off as a character and seems to be eternally relegated to being the Scrappy-Doo of the bridge. And Archer's character development was minimal. While he no longer seems to hold such unbridled animosity towards Vulcans or T'Pol, overall he seems more a blank canvas than a three dimensional person. Before diving into categories, Joe made everyone some pretty cool NX-01 caps to celebrate the completion of Season One! We are all very cool. Anyway, onto the Awards! This is one of those rare Star Trek episodes that actually presents us with a non-traditional alien. A feat that knocked this episode into Chris' list of favorites. Enterprise Season One: Two Guys Walk Into a Bar. You’ve probably heard a joke that starts with the line, “Two guys walk into a bar…” But when they visited Risa, Tucker and Reed actually lived this joke! The end of Enterprise's first season finally gave the crew a chance to get some shore leave, but they had to navigate more than a few bumps along the way. These unexpected detours included investigating a shipwreck, getting thrown into an internment camp, and finding themselves in the thick of the Temporal Cold War! In this episode of Warp Five, hosts Floyd Dorsey and Jeffrey Harlan are joined by Tommy Kraft to discuss not only the conclusion to Enterprise Season One, but also for a final update before his Enterprise-era movie, Star Trek Horizon, premieres. The group also discusses the themes in the final seven episodes of the first season as they applaud finally seeing an “alien” alien, explain how Phlox stole an episode, and more. Plus, Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country makes a guest appearance that nearly takes over this episode of Warp Five! Vox Sola. Star Trek has presented us with more aliens that we can count. But most of these have been humanoid. Even the exceptions—Tholians, Excalbians, even Species 8472—are still easy for us to imagine being real… somewhere out there. In the first-season Enterprise episode “Vox Sola,” the writers and creative team attempted to give us, as Brannon Braga put it, “a wildly alien alien.” The title of this episode is Latin for “lone voice,” and is one of just seven episodes with Latin names—and possibly the best. In this episode of The Ready Room we're joined by Phillip Gilfus, Tommy Kraft, and Suzanne Abbott to discuss just how unique this story is within Star Trek, how difficult it is to present truly alien life, the production challenges of turning plastic wrap into a villain, as well as the technology sneak peeks and ethically building blocks of this early mission of the NX-01. In our news segment we reflect on the 20th anniversary of the TNG finale, "All Good Things…", some unique ships coming to The Official Starships Collection—including the 22nd-century Romulan Bird-of-Prey and the Krenim timeship from Voyager's "Year of Hell," and the big plans that are afoot over at Star Trek: Phase II.
