Ohio doctor David Sabgir realized that asking his patients to get out and exercise wasn't working. So, he strapped on his running shoes and hit the pavement with them. The program, called Walk With A Doc, has spread to more than 500 communities around the globe in the 20 years since. Dr. Sabgir explains the difference walking has made for his patients — and his own practice.

TMA's new podcast called TMA Health Beat will focus on public health issues and outreach programs organized by TMA. In the first episode, Marinel Munda, MD, a pediatrician from Tyler, Texas, talks about Walk with a Doc – a free program organized by physicians to encourage their patients to exercise. Dr. Munda explains why walking is important for a healthy lifestyle and how the program helps her give back to her community.
Movement is important for a person's health and well-being. The good news is: many activities that promote movement come with enormous benefits that extend beyond physical health. Today's discussion features the founders of two organizations that aim to promote physical activity — and build community while doing it. Walk with a Doc began in 2005 after Dr. David Sabgir, a cardiologist in Columbus, Ohio, invited his patients to go for a walk with him in a local park. The program has since spread to more than 500 locations. Semilla Cultural, founded by Isha M. Renta López, is a non-profit organization in the Washington, D.C., area that promotes the development and cultivation of a community that embraces Puerto Rican culture and arts, including by teaching and performing the Puerto Rican musical genre of Bomba. Sabgir and López spoke with Health Disparities podcast hosts Dr. Hadiya Green and Christin Zollicoffer. This conversation was recorded in person at the 2023 Movement Is Life annual Health Equity Summit.

After attending the lifestyle medicine conference a week or so ago, I was reminded of what my values and my purpose in life and career are. I had the opportunity to rest and connect with like-minded people and it was just what I needed. I also discovered a group called Walk With A Doc and I've decided to open a chapter in my hometown. It's a great way to volunteer in a way that's aligned with my passion and to talk through these concepts of helping people in alignment with personal values, I've invited Kirsten Beske to the show today. Kirsten is a mindset and transformation expert, a Harvard graduate, an experienced psychotherapist, and a mindset coach. So I'm going to talk all about what is required for transformation and connecting with our higher purpose with Kirsten. Kirsten talks about accepting limitations and being kind to ourselves through change and struggle because we will find peace on the other side of it. When we understand our values and we know what we want our impact on the world to be, we can keep moving forward with that in mind and know we're doing the right thing. Kirsten points out that some things are out of our control so when we come up for air, it's important to check in and make sure we're okay. We talk about the value of making space, the importance of journaling (I love journaling), and the definition of positive psychology and how it's applied in our lives. This conversation was enlightening and really hit on many points I've been pondering in my own life. Kirsten's knowledge and advice are exactly what I needed and I hope you feel the same when you listen to our conversation.About Kirsten Beske:Kirsten Beske, J.D., M.A., ICF Certified Business & Life Redesign Coach and Change Expert.Kirsten is a Life Redesign Coach who guides mid-career professionals into their next chapter of life and work for more joy, energy, impact and a sense of fulfillment. Her zone of genius is guiding people to inventory their accumulated knowledge, skills, expertise, strengths and wisdom and to use them as a compass to map out the next amazing chapter of life and work. In her first chapter, Kirsten was a litigation attorney for 14 years and a law firm partner. Then each of her children had near-death health challenges as infants, right as the 9/11 attacks occurred. Reconciling these events led her to reevaluate her values, priorities and sense of purpose in life. She decided to leave her law practice, got a Master's Degree in Clinical Psychology, and ran her private psychotherapy practice for over a decade. Kirsten has always been fascinated with the question of how people thrive. Now, as a Life Redesign Coach, she loves sharing evidence-based science on how everyone can live their best lives at each unique phase of life. She also is a Certified Applied Positive Psychology practitioner and an ICF Certified Life Coach, so she can be trusted to safely guide clients into their next chapter of life and work. __Resources discussed in this episode:Martin Seligman and Positive Psychology__Learn more about Kirsten Beske:Website: KirstenBeske.comInstagramFacebookLinkedInLearn more about Dr. Michelle Tubman and Wayza Health:Website: www.wayzahealth.comFollow me on Facebook and Instagram

Joining us today is Board Certified Cardiologist and Founder of Walk With a Doc, Dr. David Sabgir! Dr. David is the epitome of walking the walk in the health industry. About 20 years ago, after feeling frustrated with how little he felt he could do for the activity and exercise of patients, Dr. David invited all of his patients to a walk in the park with him and his family on the weekend. Thus, a movement was born where Doctors and future Doctors can meet up with patients and communities in large groups at local parks and walk, talk, and answer questions on the weekends. WWAD now has over 552 Chapters in 47 countries, 46 states, and holds over 8,200 events per year. We walk through Dr. David's story on starting WWAD, and why he chose walking as the perfect modality for our mental, emotional, and physical health. This episode will challenge your all or nothing mentality on movement and exercise, it's for the person that feel like walking is not "worth it," or you don't see how you could fit it into your life because of time, weather, or accessibility to nature. We talk about the benefits of outdoor and activity based movements like WWAD on the health of a community, and how it works to bridge gaps and mend barriers in a community, diving into some of his favorite success stories. This episode will be sure to encourage you and help you rethink the way you do movement, community, and the outdoors. Learn more about this movement at www.walkwithadoc.org. https://walkwithadoc.org/ (Walk with a Doc) was started in 2005 by Dr. David Sabgir, a cardiologist in Columbus, Ohio. Frustrated with his inability to affect behavior change in the clinical setting, Dr. Sabgir invited his patients to go for a walk with him in a local park on a spring Saturday morning. To his surprise, over 100 people showed up, energized and ready to move. Since that first event in 2005, Walk with a Doc has grown as a grassroots effort with a model based on sustainability and simplicity. The reach of Walk with a Doc now extends all around the globe with over 500 chapters worldwide, including Walk with a Future Doc chapters led by medical students! We had a great conversation with Dr. Sabgir about the walk, and his amazement of the growth worldwide. He also offers up some very specific positive physical and mental changes that can happen to all of us when we start walking. We would love to hear from you. If you may remember, last year we had our wonderful friend, Orelle Jackson, https://www.limitlessgrowthstrategies.com/ (President of Limitless Growth Strategies), come in and talk to us about crises, how to deal with crises. And in our conversations, she mentioned an organization called Walk with a Doc. She then conned Carol into a fundraiser that they were having, which was actually a virtual walk through Kilimanjaro. It was great fun because Carol not only could walk, she could rake leaves to get her miles in. Then just recently, they finished a walk in the Grand Canyon. Orelle and Carol were a team, so it's much easier to do it as two as opposed to one. So we connected with the founder, CEO, director of the walk (and an all around great guy), Dr. David Sabga. We wanted to get more information on the backstory of the walk. He talks about how this walk began, and offers some great advice on how to start getting in your daily steps. Even if the first day is just putting on your walking shoes! This episode will be in your podcast player June 21, 2021. We would love to hear from you. Email us at hello@lookingforwardourway.com. To his surprise, over 100 people showed up, energized and ready to move. A doctor gives a brief presentation on a health topic and then leads participants on a walk at their own pace. Walk with a Doc now extends all around the globe with over 500 chapters worldwide, including Walk with a Future Doc chapters led by medical students! In honor of Heart Health Month, Walk With A Doc partnered with Fresh Avocados – Love One Today® to show our hearts some love! Along with the app Racery, Walk with A Doc created a virtual adventure along the Grand Canyon encouraging people to form teams and to promote movement such as walking, swimming, housework, etc. You may have heard us talk about this exciting adventure will is currently going on and will conclude on February 26. We were excited to have Dr. Sabgir on the show since Dr. Riz leads one of the Dallas chapters. We will resume our walks within a couple of months and will make sure to share more information once we are ready. In the meantime, we formed about 5 teams to encourage friends from all over the country to be active in their environment. If you were in the Grand Canyon Adventure, please send us an email and tell us about your experience. What sort of work outs did you do? In this episode, we sit down with Dr. Sabgir to hear his story of how he founded Walk With A Doc. We will talk about the health benefits of walking regularly. Since Dr. Sabgir is a cardiologist we asked questions that some of you submitted on topics such as stents, statins, HDL, LDL, and finally Dr. Sabgir also offers us his acronym with additional tips to keep our hearts healthy. Dave is an inspiration to me and many around the world. Early in his medical career, he recognized a barrier between patients and doctors that affected his ability to provide the best care. He then turned that into Walk With A Doc, a movement in which there are 376 chapters around the world including 11 in India and in parts of Africa. The premise is simple. Walk with a Doc puts doctors in parks across the country and around the world with the goal of disrupting the current medical system as we know it. Join the community. Talk with doctors, friends and neighbors. Breakdown walls and build conversations. And get some exercise while you are doing so. It’s no surprise U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy used Walk with a Doc as the example for preventative health when addressing audiences. Make sure to check it out www.walkwithadoc.org.
Walk with a Doc has grown as a grassroots effort, with a model based on sustainability and simplicity. A doctor gives a brief presentation on a health topic and then leads participants on a walk at their own pace. Healthy snacks, coffee and blood pressure checks are also a standard part of a Walk with a Doc event. https://www.facebook.com/walkwithadoccoloradosprings/
