*(Disclaimer: The content in this video is intended for educational and informational purposes only)*Aurora, Colorado — On May 12, 2025, about 3 p.m., Aurora Police Department received a 911 call about a suspicious person trespassing at an offsite airport parking lot in the 19900 block of East 56th Avenue. The caller reported there was a male on the property checking vehicle door handles and refusing to leave. An Aurora police patrol officer responded about 5:15 p.m. Once at the scene, staff members reported the suspect was still on the property and was becoming more aggressive with employees. The officer located the suspect, later identified as 32-year-old Rashad Terrelle Johnson, and attempted to speak with him. About one minute later, Johnson charged the officer and there was a fight. Aurora911 received additional calls from people at the parking lot reporting that an officer needed help. The officer attempted to use less lethal devices to gain control of Johnson. Those attempts were unsuccessful. The officer also gave Johnson multiple commands, but Johnson refused to follow the officer's directions, and an officer-involved shooting occurred. Additional officers responded and provided first aid to Johnson until medical responders arrived at the scene. Johnson was taken to a local hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries. Johnson died shortly after his arrival at the hospital. The officer also was taken to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries he sustained during the fight.=================================Subscribe to Shots Fired Podcast Here:➡️ YouTube: @shotsfiredpodcast50 ==============Ways to reach the Shots Fired Podcast Team:==============

The recent violence in Culiacán, Sinaloa, has erupted due to heightened tensions following the capture of significant cartel figures, including Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada and Joaquín Guzmán López, son of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán. The unrest began with attacks on military personnel, burning vehicles, and roadblocks set up by cartel members to prevent law enforcement from moving freely in the city. This violence reflects the cartels' aggressive response to any threat to their leadership, causing widespread chaos and disruption in the regionThe Sinaloa Cartel, particularly factions loyal to El Chapo's sons, commonly referred to as "Los Chapitos," have employed these violent tactics to exert control and retaliate against government actions. The resulting clashes have significantly impacted daily life in Culiacán, with local authorities advising residents to stay indoors and avoid main roads due to the ongoing instability and threat of further violence. In Segment number two:The Mexican government suspects that the "Chapitos," the faction of the Sinaloa Cartel led by the sons of Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán, were behind a plot to abduct Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada, a co-founder of the cartel. The speculation arises from an ongoing power struggle within the cartel, as the Chapitos seek to consolidate control and eliminate rivals. According to recent reports, Ovidio Guzmán, one of El Chapo's sons, is believed to have orchestrated this kidnapping attempt to gain leverage and possibly hand El Mayo over to U.S. authorities, leveraging it for his own benefit or to create chaos within the cartel leadershipThis theory has been complicated by denials from Ovidio Guzmán's lawyer, who rejects the idea that there was any intention to kidnap El Mayo. The conflicting accounts and lack of concrete evidence have made it difficult for Mexican authorities to establish a definitive narrative. Nonetheless, the suspicion highlights the ongoing tensions and shifting allegiances within the Sinaloa Cartel, driven by a mix of familial loyalty and ruthless ambitionIn segment three:Aurora, Colorado, is currently facing concerns about alleged takeovers of apartment complexes by members of the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua. Reports indicate that the gang, which originated in Venezuela and has been spreading across the U.S. border, is accused of taking control of certain apartment complexes in Aurora. Videos have surfaced showing armed men, purportedly gang members, patrolling these complexes openly with firearms. Local residents and city council members have expressed alarm, claiming the gang is engaging in criminal activities such as drug trafficking and potentially even sex trafficking within these complexesThe situation has generated controversy, with some city and state officials dismissing the claims as exaggerated or baseless. Governor Jared Polis's office referred to the concerns as "imagination," despite the visual evidence presented in various reports. The Aurora Police Department has acknowledged that members of the gang are active in the area but has described their influence as isolated incidents rather than widespread control. James Toliver Craig, the Colorado dentist at the center of a sensational poisoning case, entered a not-guilty plea on Monday, facing charges of first-degree murder and tampering with evidence. Authorities have been investigating the case since March, when Angela Craig, James' wife, died under mysterious circumstances.    According to the Aurora Police Department, Angela Craig, 43, passed away on March 15 after multiple hospitalizations due to severe headaches and dizziness. The narrative that unfolded in the subsequent months has brought a sense of disbelief to many familiar with the case. James Craig is accused of poisoning his wife's protein shakes with arsenic, which he allegedly ordered online.    CNN, along with other major news outlets, has been closely monitoring the developments in the case. The trial is set for April 19, 2024, and preparations are already underway with plans for a special panel for jury selection. Testimony is expected to commence the subsequent week. Efforts to reach James Craig's attorney, Andrew Ho, for comments were to no avail as of the time of this report.    But what has driven attention to this case is not just the tragic demise of Angela Craig but the details unveiled in the investigations. An arrest warrant application released in March paints a chilling picture: it alleges that James Craig exhibited planning and intent to end his wife's life. The reasons cited include searching for methods to carry out the crime discreetly, giving her poisons which aligned with her symptoms during her hospital stays, and reportedly looking forward to starting a new life with another woman.    In a disturbing revelation from the affidavit, in the weeks leading to Angela's death, James Craig is believed to have used a computer at his dental practice to research various "undetectable poisons." His internet search history includes inquiries such as "how many grams of pure arsenic will kill a human" and chilling YouTube searches like "how to make poison" and "Top 5 Undetectable Poisons That Show No Signs of Foul Play." Further complicating the case, James Craig supposedly created a new email account to order arsenic online.    As we dig deeper, it appears the couple's marital relationship was on rocky grounds. Angela's sister has been instrumental in providing crucial insights into the dynamics of the couple's relationship. She informed investigators about the volatile nature of their marriage. More alarmingly, she recalled Angela once mentioned that James had drugged her in the past, as he intended to commit suicide and did not want her to prevent his actions.    Following Angela's untimely death, her sister also brought another suspicious behavior to light. She stated that James Craig had expressed his wish against an autopsy being conducted on Angela. The affidavit quotes James as saying, "if they couldn't figure out what was wrong with her when she was alive he wouldn't let them poke her more when she was dead."    The coming months will undoubtedly bring more details to the fore as the trial commences. It remains to be seen what defense James Craig's legal team will present, and whether new evidence will emerge. The case is an unsettling reminder that sometimes, the darkest secrets are hidden behind the most unsuspecting facades. As the justice system takes its course, our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of Angela Craig, who are grappling with the tragic loss and its unfolding implications. His views on policing and his leadership of the Austin (TX), Houston (TX), and Miami (FL) police departments can be hard to categorize in traditional terms. He has been as likely to adopt uncompromising approaches toward fighting crime as to drive reforms that reflect contemporary public sentiments about needed advancements. It's Tuesday and we're breaking down all the local stories that matter. First, the Aurora Police Department released bodycam footage of the killing of 14-year-old Jor'Dell Richardson, but questions still remain as to what happened. Also, Denver School Board director Auon'tai Anderson announced that he won't be running for re-election; instead, he'll be running for House District 8, where Democratic representative Leslie Herod is term-limited. Speaking of politicians, a new Colorado law says your elected officials can block you from their personal accounts on social media if they want to — but legal or not, the ACLU still thinks it's a free speech issue. Plus, producer Paul Karolyi tells host Bree Davies about a new brunch spot in LoHi that he's excited about, which comes from Denver celeb chef (who beat Bobby Flay!), Carrie Baird.  We mentioned the GoFundMe for Jor'Dell Richardson's family, as well as a community gathering and memorial for Jor'Dell on the steps of the capitol.  For even more news from around the city, subscribe to our morning newsletter Hey Denver by texting “Denver” to 66866 Follow us on Twitter: @citycastdenver Or Instagram: @citycastdenver Chat with other listeners on Reddit: r/CityCastDenver Text or leave us a voicemail with your name and neighborhood, and you might hear it on the show: (720) 500-5418‬ Looking to advertise on City Cast Denver? Good Morning, Colorado, and welcome to the Daily Sun-Up with The Colorado Sun. It’s Tuesday February 23rd, and we’re feeling lucky to start the day with you. Join us daily for an in-depth look at one of our top stories. Today - why has the town of Silverton, Colorado seen Six town administrators come and go in just seven years? Before we begin, let’s take a look at what happened on this day in Colorado history - adapted from Derek R Everett’s book “Colorado Day by Day”: Today, we take you back to February 23rd, 1981 when Denver radio station KOA, whos signal reached dozens of states, rolled the dice. It debuted a new talk show, more combative in style than most on the state’s airwaves, hosted by Alan Berg. Berg earned the ire of radical groups like the KKK for his politics and Jewish faith. And in 1984 white supremacists murdered him outside of his townhouse in east Denver, a crime that inspired a nationwide crackdown on members of such groups.Silverton, Colorado has 460 year round residents. Nestled in the southwest corner of the state between two treacherous mountain passes, the town has had its share of tumultuous political squabbles: Six town administrators have come and gone in the past seven years. What’s happening in this high altitude town? Colorado Sun contributor Nancy Lofholm (pronounced LOFF-holme) talks with reporter Lucy Haggard to share what she found. To read more about Silverton, go to coloradosun.com. Thanks for listening. Before we go here are a few stories you should know about today: An independent review of Elijah McClain’s death found Aurora police and emergency medical officers made multiple bad decisions when they stopped the 23-year-old in 2019. A three-member panel concluded officers did not have probable cause when they pinned McClain on the ground, or a reason to inject him with ketamine. The panel’s report noted that the incident included multiple indicators of implicit bias, though the report did not conclude the stop was bias-motivated. The Aurora Police Department had 60% more officers leave in 2020 than it did in 2019. https://coloradosun.com/2021/02/22/elijah-mcclain-independent-investigation-released/ A snowmobiler killed in Grand County on February 14 has been identified as Michael “Tony” Westall. The 58-year-old was out with his teenage son on Mount Epworth when an avalanche released and buried him. The son tried to dig out Westall, who was pinned under his snowmobile, but could only uncover his head from the slushy debris. Rescuers were able to pull Westall out, but they were unable to revive him. Eleven people have died in Colorado avalanches so far this season. https://coloradosun.com/2021/02/22/snowmobiler-killed-in-avalanche-rollins-pass-caic/ K-through-12 schools must give standardized tests this year despite the coronavirus pandemic, according to the U.S. Department of Education. However, the results of the tests won’t be used against schools, and states can choose if they want to shorten tests, delay them, or hold them remotely. Monday’s announcement comes following a bill in the Colorado legislature that would have removed the state-level requirement. https://coloradosun.com/2021/02/22/schools-must-still-give-standardized-tests-this-year-biden-administration-says/ For more information on all of these stories, visit our website, www.coloradosun.com. Aug 13, 2020: Big Victory For Teachers in NJ

AM Quickie

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 13, 2020 8:39

Welcome to Majority.FM's AM QUICKIE! Brought to you by justcoffee.coop TODAY'S HEADLINES: It’s a victory for teachers unions in New Jersey as the state reconsiders its requirement for in-person classes. Can their campaign be replicated elsewhere students, teachers, and families remain at risk due to COVID-19? Meanwhile, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris make their first appearance together in Delaware. Reviews are encouraging, but mixed. And lastly, a big win for the birds! A federal judge overturned a Trump administration rule change that let oil companies off the hook for killing wildlife en masse. THESE ARE THE STORIES YOU NEED TO KNOW: Teachers unions at a single district in New Jersey forced a statewide policy reversal from the governor over safety concerns in schools. Some four hundred out of a total two thousand teachers at the Elizabeth school district opted out of teaching in-person classes, citing health fears on account of the coronavirus pandemic. Governor Phil Murphy had originally mandated that all New Jersey schools offer in-person learning. But after the strong showing by teachers in Elizabeth, Murphy changed his tune. On Monday, the district voted to begin the school year with all-online learning for twenty-eight thousand students, blaming COVID-19 and the subsequent teacher shortage. Then, late on Tuesday, in a joint statement with principals and administrators, the teachers union called for online learning statewide. The statement called for swift and decisive action from the governor. The union said that while remote education cannot replace in-person instruction, QUOTE we believe that a carefully planned, well-resourced remote education plan is better than the dangerous, uncertain in- person alternative currently available to us ENDQUOTE. Yesterday, Murphy, an ally of the teachers union, finally dropped the in-person learning requiorement. The union wasn’t alone in its campaign. The mayor of Newark, a former high school principal, had advised parents to keep their kids home from school on account of the risk. And while opinions remain divided among parents, students, and teachers, one parent told CBS News why she thought holding classes online for now was the right choice. She said, QUOTE do we really want to risk our children going back to school, getting sick and getting all the other kids sick, and then we are all back lock down all over again? ENDQUOTE. Well, when you put it like that, no, I guess we don’t really want that. Biden, Harris appear together Joe Biden and Kamala Harris made their first joint appearance as a presidential ticket yesterday in Wilmington, Delaware. Calling Harris an honorary Biden, the former vice president said QUOTE we both believe we can define America in one word: possibilities. Possibilities. Let me say it again: possibilities ENDQUOTE. Harris attacked Donald Trump’s leadership failures and said it’s all on the line for America in this election. She said, QUOTE the case against Donald Trump and Mike Pence is open and shut... Electing Joe Biden is just the start of the work that’s ahead of us ENDQUOTE. After their speeches, CNN reported, the two Democratic candidates held an online fundraiser for small-dollar donors. According to the Wall Street Journal, Wall Street breathed a sigh of relief when Biden chose Harris to be his number two. In Harris’s home state of California, reaction was a mixture of excitement and doubts, given the familiarity voters have there with Harris’s record as a US Senator as well as a prosecutor. Melina Abdullah, co-founder of Black Lives Matter Los Angeles, told the LA Times that she would’ve preferred a more progressive candidate as Biden’s vice presidential pick. However, she said, BLM leaders did have several positive interactions with Harris shortly after the group was founded. Separately, the New York Times reported that Donald Trump’s son-in-law and key adviser Jared Kushner met with the rapper Kanye West last weekend. West is running his own Quixotic campaign for president and will appear on the ballot in at least a few states. According to the Times, West did not deny that he was running as a spoiler. Judge restores conservation rule A federal judge in New York overturned rule changes by the Trump administration that allowed corporations and individuals to kill vast numbers of birds. Trump changed the environmental rule in order to benefit oil companies, which had paid most of the fines under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918. The law covered a wide range of birds including eagles, red knots, Canada geese and vultures, according to the Washington Post. Trump changed the way it was interpreted two years ago, and required US Fish and Wildlife Service police to enforce the act only if they could prove violators intended to harm birds. In other words, if companies killed birds accidentally as part of their operations, they got a pass. That suited companies like BP just fine. The 2010 Deepwater Horizon spill killed an estimated one million birds. Under Trump’s interpretation of the law, they wouldn’t have been liable for that particular crime against nature. But US District Judge Valerie Caproni restored the plain meaning of the law in her ruling yesterday. Eight state attorneys general had joined the National Audubon Society and other conservation groups in challenging the Trump rule. Judge Caproni wrote QUOTE it is not only a sin to kill a mockingbird, it is also a crime. That has been the letter of the law for the past century. But if the Department of the Interior ha[d] its way, many mockingbirds and other migratory birds that delight people and support ecosystems throughout the country w[ould] be killed without legal consequence ENDQUOTE. In a joint statement, more than a thousand species of birds tweeted their thanks. AND NOW FOR SOME QUICKER QUICKIES: Bloomberg News reported that Trump has said privately he plans to replace Defense Secretary Mark Esper, a former Raytheon lobbyist, after the November election. For his part, Esper claims he plans to leave the administration regardless of the election’s outcome. Trump was reportedly mad that Esper didn’t get on board with deploying active-duty military to put down Black Lives Matter protests around the country. So there’s at least one functioning brain cell between them. More than six thousand people have reportedly been arrested in Belarus after three nights of protests against alleged vote-rigging in Sunday’s presidential election. The main opposition candidate fled to Lithuania following threats to her children. The election commission declared a landslide victory for incumbent President Alexander Lukashenko. In Minsk yesterday, hundreds of women formed a human chain to protest against police brutality and mass arrests, the Guardian reported. The women wore white and held flowers. The Colorado attorney general has opened a so-called pattern and practice investigation into the Aurora Police Department. The investigation centers on the death of Elijah McClain, a young Black man who died in Aurora police custody last year. The AG’s announcement came the same day that McClain’s family filed a federal lawsuit against the department. Police Chief Vanessa Wilson pledged QUOTE full cooperation ENDQUOTE, but the Aurora Police Association has declined comment. The chief executive of Uber says the company will shut down service in California if a judge does not overturn an unfavorable ruling. On Monday, a judge granted an injunction against the company that forbids it from classifying its drivers as independent contractors when they are in fact employees. But yesterday Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi told MSNBC that the company would rather shut down temporarily than comply with the law. Sounds like a personal problem! The action was organized by the Party for Socialism and Liberation and the Frontline Party for Revolutionary Action, organizers who have been in the fight for justice for Elijah McClain since he was attacked and then died in August of 2019, and who led the organized takeover of Interstate Highway 225 by three thousand people the Saturday before. July 6, 2020: Trump Grasps for Nationalism

Welcome to Majority.FM's AM QUICKIE! Brought to you by justcoffee.coop TODAY'S HEADLINES: Trump leaned into nationalism and the culture wars in events across Fourth of July weekend, although he appeared to flounder in front of lackluster crowds and a strange, sad party at the White House. Meanwhile, the ongoing protests in Seattle suffered yet another tragedy on Saturday, when a driver plowed through protesters on a closed section of Interstate 5, killing one person and seriously injuring another. And lastly, two of the nation’s largest utility companies announced that they would be canceling the construction of the Atlantic Coast Pipeline, a destructive natural gas line that would have hacked its way through the Appalachian trail. It’s a huge win for environmentalists, who have been suing the project into oblivion for years. THESE ARE THE STORIES YOU NEED TO KNOW: Trump Grasps for Nationalism We’ll start today with a quick wrap-up of Donald Trump’s weird, sad weekend, which kicked off on Friday night with a jingoistic rally in front of Mount Rushmore aimed almost entirely at stoking racial and cultural resentment among his white base before election day. In other words, business as usual. But let’s pull a quick snippet from the Rushmore Rally to illustrate just where he’s coming from. During the rally, he said quote “this left-wing cultural revolution is designed to overthrow the American Revolution,” endquote. He then continued, saying that the left’s goal was to quote “end America.” endquote. The rest of the speech leaned into similar themes: the end of western civilization, calling on the American people to stop their history being taken away from them, all that kind of stuff. You can see how that directly ties into the bigoted arguments like “heritage not hate” that racists use to try to justify monuments to the confederacy. Trump followed the Rushmore speech with a strange party on the White House grounds, complete with fireworks, a military flyover, and a Navy band singing songs from the Lion King. Pretty surreal stuff, in other words. It’s worth putting all this stuff in context: Trump is absolutely floundering right now. His poll numbers compared to Biden are circling the drain, per a new Monmouth poll that came out last Thursday Even his most stable age groups, like the 50-64 demographic, are starting to slip away -- He’s down 5 points in that group. He’s clearly hoping that by ralling the fires of white nationalism he can scare people into re-electing him. And in the mean time, he seems to be distracting himself pretty well with golf -- visiting one of his courses for the 273rd time on Friday. Protester Killed By Car in Seattle Seattle’s protest movement suffered another violent tragedy this weekend, after a protester was killed and one other seriously wounded after a driver plowed through a demonstration on Interstate 5. The murdered protester was identified as 24-year-old Summer Taylor. Another protester, 32-year-old Diaz Love, is in serious condition. The driver was identified as Dawit Kelete, 27. The authorities don’t have any guess as to motive at the moment, but regardless, it’s another tragic loss that’s part of a frightening trend of protesters being killed while participating in the broader social movement against police brutality. In Louisville, for instance, on protester at a vigil for Breonna Taylor was shot and killed in late June. Throughout the protests, multiple people have been killed by police; in the same city, cops shot a local barbecue owner while enforcing a curfew in the early nights of the protests. Seattle has also suffered more than its share, as shootings plagued the autonomous zone set up by protesters in the city center. Seattle police announced that they would no longer let protesters march on Interstate 5 as a response to the deaths. Conservative media, unsurprisingly, has focused almost entirely on vandalism, like burning Wendy’s, and overlooked the fact that Americans are literally dying for the cause on the streets. Environmentals Smack Down Pipeline To close out our main stories today, we’ve got a huge environmental victory to share. A few months back we talked about the Atlantic Coast Pipeline, a major natural gas line that was poised to slash through the Appalachian trail and numerous communities along the way. On Sunday, Duke Energy and Dominion Energy, the two power companies trying to build the pipeline, announced that they were canceling the project, saying that it was taking too long and costing too much to build. These delays and price spikes are the direct result of lawsuits filed by environmental activists and dedicated protesting against the pipeline. The energy companies themselves admitted that the lawsuits had driven the pipeline’s expected costs from around four and a half billion dollars when it was announced in 2015, to a whopping 8 billion dollars. The environmental lawyers did not mince words: they’re definitely rubbing this one in. Gillian Giannetti, a lawyer with the Natural Resources Defense Council said QUOTE “As they abandon this dirty pipe dream, Dominion and Duke should now pivot to investing more in energy efficiency, wind and solar — that’s how to provide jobs and a better future for all.” The victory was so crushing that Dominion Energy is getting out of the industry altogether, selling its gas transmission and storage assets to a firm linked to Berkshire Hathaway. So the rich are probably still getting richer, but today, it’s environmentalists that get the win. AND NOW FOR SOME QUICKER QUICKIES: The Aurora Police Department fired three officers who took mocking chokehold selfies outside of a memorial for Elijah McClain, a 23-year-old slain by police. Interim Chief Vanessa Wilson called their actions quote “a crime against humanity and decency.” Donald Trump’s favored Senate Candidate to take on Democrat Doug Jones in Alabama used to be a hedge fund manager -- and it turns out he wasn’t very good at it. A New York Times report on Sunday found that Tommy Tuberville was sued by his investors for fraud, and his business partner was sentenced to ten years in prison for various shady financial crimes. Sounds like Trump’s kind of guy! Iran acknowledged a destructive fire at one of its major nuclear fuel plants, which it says will set its nuclear program back months. Iran and some unnamed intelligence officials say that Israel planted a bomb in the facility. It certainly wouldn’t be the first time Israel or the U.S. for that matter had attacked the Iranian nuclear program. While the rest of the country was celebrating July 4th, the U.S. military was once again on the move: Two aircraft carriers are on their way to the South China Sea in a significant show of force, ostensibly to stage a rival boat party to China’s planned military exercises in the region. Because sure, we might as well throw more armed tension on top of a global pandemic. Why not! That’s all for the AM Quickie today. Sam’s on vacation this week, but keep tuning in to the Quickie -- we’ll keep you posted on what’s going on in the world every morning. This weekend we are celebrating the birth of our nation. Happy 4th! The Declaration of Independence, signed July 4, 1776, is a brilliant and powerful document. But just like 244 years ago, many marginalized populations in our nation do not enjoy the protections and provisions outlined in our founding documents. In 2020 I am particularly concerned about how life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are withheld from many unborn, disabled, and African Americans. On this episode we’ll look at the Supreme Court’s abortion-related ruling from last week, the premature death of Michael Hickson, a quadriplegic who with Covid was was starved to death in an Austin hospital, and the senseless death of Elijah McClain, an innocent African American young man, at the hands of the Aurora Police Department.
