Peter Goldstein is on a mission to figure out how we can ignite curiosity in our friends and loved ones about the benefits of consuming a plant-based diet. In this episode, we talk about the mastermind group that he has created to find solutions as to how we can effectively spread the message about the plant-based lifestyle. His main initiatives are focused on supporting the Grassroots Ambassadors. These are the people who are already on board and have already started sharing the message. Also, he has created a scoreboard where you can chime in to share about how you have benefited from the plant-based lifestyle. Make sure to visit wedidit.health and chime in. Peter Goldstein is a former CEO of technology and software systems and a lifelong advocate of personal power and conscious business practices. Over the past ten years, he's been tracking a mounting body of evidence that demonstrates that we can save as much as 75% of healthcare costs in the U.S. and eliminate the associated human pain and suffering by simply changing food based lifestyle. This is a savings of nearly $3 TRILLION / year or over 10% of our GDP and untold amounts of pain and suffering. As a new grandfather, the other startling statistic that inspires his work is the one that, for the first time in history, projects shorter life spans for children born today than those of their parents! Peter is dedicated to changing that calculation during his own tenure on the planet. Dr. Maria Colon-Gonzalez obtained her medical degree at the University of Puerto Rico Science Medical Campus. She then joined Penn State to complete her residency in Family & Community Medicine. While at Penn State, she traveled abroad to gain experience in Global Medicine. This sparked a passion in Dr. Colon and she decided to complete a fellowship at Brown University in Faculty Development for Global Health. Dr. Colon then moved to South Texas joining the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine. She is now working for a new company called GoMD where their goal is to improve care and access to the Hispanic/Latinx population. Very early in her career, Dr. Colon noticed the missing link in traditional medicine: that is patient empowerment for self-care. As an “ex-diabetic” Dr. Colon knows the power of lifestyle as a prescription to reverse disease. After finishing her “formal” training she became certified by the American Board of Lifestyle Medicine and completed additional training in plant-based nutrition and trauma-informed yoga. She provides comprehensive and holistic care for Hispanic patients on the US-Mexico border. You can learn more about Dr. Colon by visiting her LinkedIn profile. Dr. Scott Harrington returns to our podcast show for a second time. Finding the right Primary Care doctor can be difficult, no matter who you are. But when you’re a vegan, it can be even harder. That’s why Dr. Harrington created Vegan Primary Care. A telehealth practice licensed to help you in most US States, providing care from a vegan doctor’s perspective. As board-certified physicians, they provide many of the same services as any primary care doctor you see in-person – writing prescriptions, ordering imaging or lab tests and making referrals. But rather than rely only on the Western model of medicine, which manages chronic conditions with pills, they believe in plant-based care that seeks to achieve optimum health through a whole-foods plant-based diet, enjoyable exercise, and maintaining quality relationships. Dr. Harrington’s focus on individual treatment is evident in everything he does. He values the doctor-patient relationship and gets to know you personally. Initial appointments are 1 hour with 30-minute follow-ups so you never feel rushed. Why do you need a vegan doctor? Your current doctor may not know where you get your protein. They may not know the connection between nutrition and cardiovascular disease. Dr. Harrington is here to be your advocate. He mentions an app that you can use to track your daily meals. I looked it up and found one called Ate Food Diary + Habit Journal. Have you ever used a food diary/log? Or are you still battling certain health conditions despite making a change to a whole food plant-based diet? Head on over to our Instagram @plantbaseddfwpodcast and send me a message. Let me know how you are doing and if you have been able to reverse certain conditions. https://www.veganprimarycare.com/ Related episode: Dr. Harrington's first time on our show: https://soundcloud.com/plantbaseddfw/dr-harrington-interview _______________________________________________________________ Visit Our Podcast Website: www.plantbaseddfwpodcast.com/ ➤YouTube channel: bit.ly/plantbaseddfw ➤Tell us what you think of our show: bit.ly/pbdfwlistener ➤Subscribe to our newsletter: bit.ly/PBDFWnewsletter ➤We are on Audible/write a review: bit.ly/plantbaseddfwaudible ➤You can support us: www.buymeacoffee.com/plantbaseddfw About Plant-Based DFW Podcast: Our podcast is recorded in Dallas, Texas, and features guests from all over the world. In honor of Earth Day, I wanted to rebroadcast a conversation Dr. Riz and I had with a local environmentalist. Earth Day is an annual event on April 22 to demonstrate support for environmental protection. It is also a day to honor Earth and the concept of peace. This is a good day to reflect on the environmental impact of our daily choices. Environmental impact is defined by a change to the environment due to our actions. In the past environmentalist have encouraged us to recycle, to reduce single-use plastics such as water bottles, straws, and grocery bags. Today we know that animal agriculture is the greatest offender to climate change creating dead zones such as the one located in the Gulf of Mexico. Once we learned that the greatest offender to climate change is related to animal agriculture, Dr. Riz and I decided that we wanted to also contribute to this conversation. In this episode, we will discuss: the increased pollution of our streams, rivers, and coastal ocean *The decline in the availability of freshwater *The deforestation of the rain forest *Increases in greenhouse gas emissions *The decline in living marine resources I will have a video for this podcast in about a day. Dr. Kristen Gialo completed medical school training at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She went on to complete residency training in Psychiatry at University of Maryland Medical Center and Sheppard Pratt Hospital. She was Executive Chief Resident during residency and then worked at Sheppard Pratt Hospital specializing in working with patients with psychotic disorders, bipolar disorders, depressive disorders, anxiety disorders and developmental delays. She was a faculty member for the University of Maryland Medical Center Residency program and taught residents and medical students. She often worked with patients that not only had chronic mental illness but also chronic medical illnesses that plagued their everyday lives and served as an obstacle to their goals and happiness. There comes a point as a physician when you recognize that medications alone are not the answer and that health is so much more than just pills. Eighty percent of chronic medical illnesses in the United States are a result of lifestyle concerns such as diet, exercise, stress, lack of social connection, difficulty sleeping and substance use. As a result of this continued observation Dr. Gialo went on to become a Certified Lifestyle Medicine Physician with the American Board of Lifestyle Medicine. She is a RYT-200 certified yoga instructor as well as a Yoga Sculpt certified instructor. She incorporates her knowledge of yoga and mindfulness into her therapeutic practice. With her combined training in Psychiatry and Lifestyle Medicine, she is uniquely equipped to help individuals suffering from not only mental health concerns but also chronic medical illnesses. Catharine Arnston is an expert in algae nutrition, a wellness thought leader, an experienced entrepreneur, and sought after speaker. She has an MBA, BA Hons and is a Board Certified Health Coach, Catharine's journey into the fascinating world of algae began in 2008 when her younger sister was diagnosed with breast cancer and advised by her oncologist that an alkaline diet would improve her healing. Catharine left her 25-year corporate career to help her sister identify which foods were alkaline and this led her to algae - the most alkaline, chlorophyll-rich, high-protein, nutrient-dense food in the world. When Catharine learned that algae's vast healing properties were documented in tens of thousands of scientific studies but that none of these studies or benefits were known outside of Asia, she knew she needed to do something. And so ENERGYbits® was born. Catharine has spent the last ten years researching algae, writing papers, giving presentations, lecturing at conferences, and speaking on 150+ podcasts to explain the benefits of algae. To do this, she read thousands of scientific papers that detailed, validated, and confirmed algae's nutritional, health, longevity, and global benefits. Remarkably none of these findings are known by consumers. It is Catharine's vision and passion to change this and while she is not a Ph.D., her scientific fluency allows her to explain algae with such simplicity and clarity, it quickly becomes obvious why algae is something we all urgently need. Catharine's passion for algae is contagious, inspiring and thought-provoking. Her efforts have led to algae being better understood by educators, consumers, doctors, and wellness practitioners. Even the United Nations and NASA endorse algae as the most nutrient-dense food in the world and the answer to world hunger. Catharine's extensive knowledge and playful personality is both entertaining and educating and her speaking style leaves audiences informed, uplifted, and hopeful. Meet Alan Twigg, a 55 year old English man who lives in Tenerife in the Canary Islands. He lives with his beautiful German wife. They have two children in Germany and two in the UK. He speaks English, German and Spanish. He also dances Tango and organizes Tango events on the island. He practices yoga and meditation daily as well. And in this episode, we will be talking about all of that and more including his book titled, and suddenly everything changed. We will talk about the inspiration behind that book and how Alan became plant based himself. Alan was also inspired to write his book because of his own father's heart disease. The objective of the story is to reveal the hidden unhealthy truths about the typical Western diet, about animal agriculture, the impacts of dietary choices on the environment, and ultimately to encourage and motivate everyday people to consider veganism. On his journey, the character Peter meets intriguing characters. Each of these have their own individual story that they share and all are based on people that Alan knew or heard about. We will also learn about Alan's online course titled Plant Based Heroes. We will learn about his yoga, his Tango, how he enjoys meditation. And we will finally talk about the differences that we see in Spain, the UK and Germany when it comes to plant based eating. I hope you enjoyed this episode. This is one of those stories that someone needs to hear. Erica Taft spent most of her life battling a variety of health conditions. She has battled with systemic inflammation, lupus, celiac disease, PCOS, Hashimotos, IBS issues, etc. This is an incredible story. During her health journey she tried a variety of elimination diets to relieve her symptoms but nothing really seemed to work. Eventually she learned about plant based physicians such as Dr. Brooke Goldner, Dr. Michael Greger, and Dr. Dean Ornish. Today Erica has found that a fully plant based raw diet has helped to calm her body. Erica is a godly woman who’s faith has guided this entire journey. She is currently working on a book to share her story with a broader audience. Erica is a holistic nutritionist and you can learn more about her by visiting her Facebook page called Overcome Autoimmune. I apologize in advance for the eco in my voice. For years, Dr. Suzannah Bozzone was prescribing medicine which she herself would not have taken. She grew frustrated by the seemingly incurable state of our most prevalent, deadly and costly chronic diseases. Then she found Lifestyle Medicine, which is not only strongly evidence-based, but resonated with her desire to treat herself, her family and her patients more in accordance with nature’s guidance and, most importantly, addressing diseases from their root causes, rather than covering up symptoms. Best of all, this method empowers patients, rather than dictating dependence on our pharmaceutically-driven medical system. Dr. Bozzone completed training as a yoga teacher in 2009. In 2017, she became a diplomate of the American Board of Lifestyle Medicine. In this episode, Dr. Bozzone shares with us her path towards discovering lifestyle medicine. We learn about her community-based programs which are focused on diet, exercise, sleep, emotional health and stress management to achieve optimal health. She is the co-founder of True Health Journey. The next Plant Based Nutrition Kickstart 101 begins as this episode is being released, March 3. This is a virtual 8 sessions series. Dr. Bozzone tells us about the kickstart program and what it entails. It includes the foundations of balanced plant based nutrition, recipes, the science and comparison to other common diet beliefs, the how to, and plenty of fun discussion with herself and her business partner certified health coach and registered nurse Christine Smith. Finally, Dr. Bozzone will give us a couple of tips for starting a healthier lifestyle. Walk with a Doc was started in 2005 by Dr. David Sabgir, a cardiologist in Columbus, Ohio. Frustrated with his inability to affect behavior change in the clinical setting, Dr. Sabgir invited his patients to go for a walk with him at a local park on a spring Saturday morning. To his surprise, over 100 people showed up, energized and ready to move. Since that first event in 2005, Walk with a Doc has grown as a grassroots effort with a model based on sustainability and simplicity. A doctor gives a brief presentation on a health topic and then leads participants on a walk at their own pace. Walk with a Doc now extends all around the globe with over 500 chapters worldwide, including Walk with a Future Doc chapters led by medical students! In honor of Heart Health Month, Walk With A Doc partnered with Fresh Avocados – Love One Today® to show our hearts some love! Along with the app Racery, Walk with A Doc created a virtual adventure along the Grand Canyon encouraging people to form teams and to promote movement such as walking, swimming, housework, etc. You may have heard us talk about this exciting adventure will is currently going on and will conclude on February 26. We were excited to have Dr. Sabgir on the show since Dr. Riz leads one of the Dallas chapters. We will resume our walks within a couple of months and will make sure to share more information once we are ready. In the meantime, we formed about 5 teams to encourage friends from all over the country to be active in their environment. If you were in the Grand Canyon Adventure, please send us an email and tell us about your experience. What sort of work outs did you do? In this episode, we sit down with Dr. Sabgir to hear his story of how he founded Walk With A Doc. We will talk about the health benefits of walking regularly. Since Dr. Sabgir is a cardiologist we asked questions that some of you submitted on topics such as stents, statins, HDL, LDL, and finally Dr. Sabgir also offers us his acronym with additional tips to keep our hearts healthy. Randy Titony is from Oklahoma City and is the director of marketing for the Scott Sabolich Prosthetics company. We met in a few years ago, when Dr. Riz’s office went over to tour their Dallas facility. Later we would learn that Randy had been featured in the documentary Eating You Alive. You may remember that we previously had other guests from the film, Sheanne and Dan Moskaluk. Dr. Jimmy Conway actually came to Dallas to share his story with our group a couple of years ago. Randy played a huge role in our starting the Plant Based DFW organization here in Dallas. In this episode, we get to know Randy a little more. He will share his story with us, we will learn about the workshops he and the Conways have offered in Oklahoma City and we will discuss Eating You Alive. http://jimmyconwaymd.com/ Related videos/podcast: Dr. Jimmy Conway visits Dallas: https://youtu.be/66qFImFH710 Sheanne & Dan Moskaluk: https://www.plantbaseddfwpodcast.com/79-eating-you-alive-with-sheanne-and-dan-moskaluk/ Visit Our Podcast Website: https://www.plantbaseddfwpodcast.com/ ➤iTunes: http://bit.ly/PBDFWiTunes ➤SoundCloud: http://bit.ly/PBDFWSoundCloud ➤iHeart Radio: http://bit.ly/PBDFWiHeartradio About Plant-Based DFW Podcast: Our podcast is recorded in Dallas, Texas and features guests from all over the world. In our work, we often hear of people with GI issues ranging from gluten intolerance to Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis and IBD issues. People tend to ask us about the right types of foods to consume in order to restore gut health and/or to prevent further aggravations. Therefore we decided to invite an expert to help answer some of these questions. In this episode, we sit down with Dr. Mendez to talk about: *The gut microbiome *Her IBD Protocol *Probiotics *Fermented foods *How lifestyle impacts gut health Dr. Vanessa Méndez is a double board certified gastroenterologist and internist. She specializes in digestive disorders, which include liver disease, inflammatory bowel disease, and nutrition based-disorders, such as obesity and constipation. Her approach to patients and their diseases is holistic and comprehensive; her goal is not just to treat the symptoms, but to get to the root cause of an ailment and provide lasting relief. She provides an evidence-based approach to her practice and focuses on lifestyle changes first to promote wellness. Dr. Méndez attended Harvard University, where she obtained a B.A. in Latin American Studies, with a minor in pre-medicine. From there, she began her medical training at the ACGME accredited Universidad Central del Caribe in Puerto Rico, completed her Residency in Internal Medicine at University of Miami/ Jackson Memorial Hospital, and her Fellowship in Gastroenterology at Tulane Medical Center in New Orleans. She has also trained in Epidemiology through Florida International University, and in Plant-Based Nutrition through Cornell University. She was awarded a visiting fellowship at the Mayo Clinic through the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation where she received special training in inflammatory bowel diseases. She has also helped lead multiple fund-raising walks to raise awareness for Crohn's and Colitis in the Miami area. I just finished organizing my entire home and I even decluttered my kitchen. Last year I cooked regularly and even wrote down in my calendar the meals that I was cooking daily. This year I organized all my staple legumes, grains and other ingredients in a more efficient way so that I can continue to cook my favorites. This leads me to today’s guest. Stephanie Dreyer is a plant-based lifestyle expert, a mom of three, the author of two children’s books, an influencer and has been featured on @vegnews @worldofvegan. She is also the creator of the @batchcookingclub . Stephanie is on a mission to get more families to eat healthier and to get them back into the kitchen. She wants every child in the world to have access to an abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables daily and to enjoy eating them! In this episode, we dive deeper into the importance of batch cooking and the effective system that Stephanie developed. We are not talking about cooking one large meal for the week that you will portion off. We are not talking about cooking all your meals in one day. She has a unique approach that allows you to prep for the week while only spending 2-3 hours on a Saturday. One of the reasons many people give up on any one diet is because of the lack proper prepping and planning. _______________________ Recommended videos: *Stephanie Dreyer on going vegan: https://youtu.be/aFUkal9WgYA *Watch their YouTube trailer: https://youtu.be/JaDpVUAtQzM *Grow Your Own Food: https://bit.ly/growwithdrriz ___________________________________________________________ Visit Our Podcast Website: www.plantbaseddfwpodcast.com/ About Plant-Based DFW Podcast: Our podcast is recorded in Dallas, Texas and features guests from all over the world. Early last year I had a conversation with Dr. Palmer Mackie about his 5-week Integrative Pain School program that he had developed and improved over the course of 19 years. As you will hear, he is board certified in lifestyle medicine and incorporates those modalities to help his patients move away from opioids towards a program that offers lasting and drug free results. Dr. Mackie added another component to his program called Ikigai. This is the Japanese world for having a sense of purpose. Dan Buettner’s work on The Blue Zones also found that having a sense of purpose was a common characteristic found in the longest lived people of these regions. I reached out to Dr. Mackie recently to see how he was doing. He is now working at Oak Street Health where he will be launching a Pain Program for their 4 health centers. As you listen to his conversation, I would like you to see if finding a sense of purpose and incorporating more movement into your life will help make 2021 more manageable. It seems like we will have more of the same virtual experience this year. When we speak of pain we are not just referring to physical pain. We take into consideration depression and mental health. I would love to hear your thoughts. Meet Lora Greenberg who is a plant based physician assistant with over 23 years of experience and resides just outside of Dallas, TX. She is also the CEO of Feeling Fabulous which is a coaching program designed to offer support for individuals looking to adopt a plant-based lifestyle. She is also board certified in lifestyle medicine which makes this conversation even more interesting for me. We will talk about what life has been like for her as she continues to quarantine herself while working as a hospitalist in order to keep her patients safe. Meet Marina Yanay-Triner, a wellness coach and founder of Soul in the Raw. I interviewed her in January of this year as I wanted her to share with our listeners tips on moving towards a healthier plant-based lifestyle for 2020. At that time she was working one on one with clients and teaching them how to be successful in their meal planning. We are only a couple of weeks away from the new year and I felt this information is just as valuable today. We will learn about Marina’s journey towards becoming plant-based, how trauma affected her diet and self-image and about her life in Israel. In this episode, we also talk about finding your why..meaning why do you want to eat a healthier diet? Why do you want to become plant-based? By discovering your reasons for eating healthier foods you are more likely to stick with this lifestyle and be successful. Marina will give us tips on meal planning, doing groceries, gadgets to have in the kitchen and staying healthy while traveling. Next week, Marina returns as my last guest of the year. She will talk about life after our first conversation. How she grew during this pandemic and the new life purpose discovered during this time. If you are an empath you will want to listen to episode on Monday, December 21. I hope you enjoy this conversation.
