We will be paying Tribute to FDNY FF Andrew Fredericks who died on 9-11-01. Andrew A. Fredericks‚ 40‚ was a firefighter in Squad 18 and a 21-year FDNY veteran. For those who never had the pleasure of meeting or hearing of Andy's work, know this: Andy was a nationally recognized gifted instructor and author who made a tremendous impact in the fire service. Andy was co-author of the FDNY's Engine Company Operations Manual. He was a New York State-certified fire instructor‚ an instructor for the New York State Association of Fire Chiefs‚ an adjunct lecturer at John Jay College of Criminal Justice‚ and taught at fire service training meetings across the country. The father of two had bachelor's degrees in political science‚ and public safety and fire science‚ and a master's degree in fire protection management. Most importantly, Andy was a kind and humorous man, a friend to many, and a devoted husband and father. Andy left us with a wealth of knowledge. He touched many across the country through his articles, hands-on training, lectures, and videos. His no-nonsense, back-to-basics approach to combating today's complicated and dangerous fires brought with it a strong following. The firefighters who were blessed to witness his instruction have an obligation to carry on his work. In the security industry, the ideal posture is to be proactive. To do this, requires a relationship with people, processes, tools, and the core values of the client. And ideally, the client is now able to identify risk, analyze and assess that risk, and then mitigate the risk down to an acceptable level.  If this is true, how do you assess the methodology and the core values of a vendor before they take on this central and significant task? Be sure to tune into our next segment of "NEVER FORGET” with special guests, 43 year FDNY veteran Deputy Chief Jay Jonas and Capt. Burke's brother Mike Burke. We will be paying Tribute to FDNY Captain William "Billy" Burke Jr. who died on 9-11-01. William “Billy” Burke Jr. grew up on Plainview, Long Island. His father was William F. Burke Sr and a Deputy Chief assigned to the 6th Division in the Bronx. During his tenure as a Deputy Chief in the 6th Division, the Bronx experienced unprecedented levels of fire duty. Throughout his career, many Bronx Firefighters would approach Billy Burke Jr. to tell him how much they admired and respected his Dad. They told him that his Dad always took care of his men. This is a lesson that Billy Burke Jr. would learn and practice. Capt. Burke was appointed to the FDNY on January 9, 1982 and was assigned to Engine 24. In September 1986, he transferred to Ladder 11 on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. He was promoted to LT in 1991 and assigned to 34 Engine. He was promoted to Captain in 1997 and assigned to Engine 21 in June of 2001. Captain William F. Burke Jr. was beloved wherever he worked. He was a positive force in affecting the demeanor of those around him. On September 11th, he led his Firefighters into the North Tower, and he told them to evacuate when he realized that the situation in the North Tower was untenable. Yet, Capt. Burke stayed behind and helped those that couldn't help themselves. A lesson he may have learned from his Dad, take care of your men.  RUN We did the Ice Cream 5K at Al Lopez Park plus mileage to get to 10 total for this week’s long run.  It was the same place that our cameraman went to do the Tampa Beer Run last week and the site of our first episode.  But we went back because I could not go last week and because that park is incredible in terms of its course and shade to get some high mileage in that we were assigned this week.  We got 5 in before the race started and then we were off on the 5K to get an unexpected medal and free ice cream!  We saw a lot of families that participated in the 5K and kids races.  There were two ice cream trucks for us to choose from when we got our free cup of ice cream, and the cherry ice cream from Sunny’s Nitro Ice Cream was awesome after our first 8 miles in the park.  Then we finished our last two miles and we were off to refuel! Send us a voice recording, write us an email, or call and leave us a message and we’ll share your feedback in our next episode.  EAT The night before the 5k, we went to one of our favorites, the Columbia Restaurant.  Their 1905 salad, Cuban sandwich, and Spanish Bean Soup as well as the Crab Croquettes are all incredible items from their menu that we reviewed on our first episode and quick bites.   (Can you tell we are celebrating the 2nd anniversary of our podcast over several weeks, even though it doesn’t officially happen until June 17th).   Our official feature for this episode is Big Ray’s Fish Camp.  It is famous online for the grouper sandwich.  Everyone says it is the best one around.   We want to go back to have that, but we were craving Fish Dip and our cameraman’s sister said that we had to have the shrimp corn dog.  Plus, a favorite of his mom’s was Grouper cheeks, and they have a buffalo version we had to order.  We had local beer in cans and bottles.  Their prices are reasonable for the delicious seafood they offer.  They have some indoor seating, but most of their seating area is a big porch on  the side of the restaurant.  It has to be so nice lit up at night.  We will return! DRINK  81Bay Brewing is in a huge warehouse-like space that had a great bar, a huge projector with video games setup on the side, as well as a Farmer’s Market going on when we arrived.  They also have an event room and awesome artwork all over the brewery from local artists selling it. Their sinks outside their bathrooms have kegs setup as their sinks for washing your hands!  Their brewery is visible from the bar, and at the bar there are friendly bartenders who helped us setup our flights.  Across from the bar is an entire wall that looks like an under-the-sea scene projected onto it behind the stage where they have live music on some nights.   I had these unique flavors while we were there but they had lots of tasty brews on tap: Here Plums the Sun 5% Market Spiked Punch 5.6% Coffee Porter featuring Lucky Goat Coffee 6% Guzumba Sweet Stout 8.5% Dana had these: Thomas Hefferson Hefeweizen 6.1% Tangled Up in Brew Lychee and White Peach Blonde Ale 5% Real Slo Irish Red 5.5% Randy Marshmallow Peanut Butter Marshmallow Stout 8.5% We would come back.  Plus a dollar of every pint purchased goes to help a local organization called W.H.A.Y.S. On this day, 17 years ago, in the year 2001, following the Morning Terrorist attacks on the Pentagon, New York City's World Trade Center & In the air over Pennsylvania. The Country as we knew it changed forever. The Disneyland Resort closes without incident. Marking it the 2nd time in History the park closes and locks its gates due to National Tragedy. The first being the assassination of John F. Kennedy. At the Disneyland resort, food & beverage stations remained opened at no charge for guests who were on property and at AMC Theaters, they were showing Disney films for free for all stranded resort guests.
