On May 25th, the legendary Indianapolis jazz trombonist Phil Ranelin will turn 86 years old. For the next three weeks on Echoes of Indiana, we'll celebrate the anniversary of Ranelin's birthday by exploring his work in music. Listen to a recent interview Ranelin recorded with WFYI's Kyle Long, along with classic recordings from his discography. Phil Ranelin was born in Indianapolis in 1939. He grew up on the city's east side in the Martindale Brightwood neighborhood and attended Arsenal Tech High School, where jazz icon Freddie Hubbard was also a student. Nearly two decades later they would record three albums together. During the 1960s, Ranelin was active on the local jazz scene, performing with Indianapolis jazz greats like Wes Montgomery, Pookie Johnson, David Young, and Freddie Hubbard. Around 1968, Ranelin left Indianapolis for Detroit, becoming deeply involved in the city's dynamic music scene. While in Detroit he worked as a session musician and touring performer for Motown Records, appearing with artists including Stevie Wonder and The Temptations. But it was his work with Tribe jazz collective that elevated his legacy in music. Ranelin co-founded Tribe in the early 1970s with saxophonist Wendell Harrison. Tribe started as a musical ensemble, but soon expanded into a record label, magazine and artist collective. Their work was explicitly political, advocating for Black empowerment and self-determination. Ranelin's tenure with Tribe Records produced a number of seminal albums including “The Time Is Now” and “Vibes from the Tribe.” These recordings blended traditional jazz with funk, and avant-garde techniques, helping to redefine the boundaries of the genre. Ranelin spent much of the last 40 years, living in Los Angeles, California. But he recently returned to his hometown Indianapolis after suffering a severe stroke in 2021. On this week's episode, hear music from Ranelin's most recent releases, including "The Found Tapes: Live in Los Angeles,” and “Tribe 2000.”

William Odell HughesA fabulous chat with the legendary Detroit singer-songwriter William Odell Hughes. This star began his music career at nine years of age in the late 60s. As he watched and learned from The Temptations and some of the greats to come out of Motown, the nine-year-old William witnessed some of the best times in music. Smokey Robinson, Anita Baker, Denise Williams were amongst these original legendary artists as William described “it was great to see them doing their thing!” William talks and compares the world of making music today, the pros and cons, and remains excited to be active in today's music industry.William grew up in Detroit and met Pamela Wise, a jazz pianist married to Wendell Harrison, who owned his own record label. A meet destined to happen between Pamela and William, as they shared the same bus route each day! This encounter was responsible for kick-starting William's career for the next forty years!William's album ‘Cruisin' is full of soulful tunes, great jazzy vides and his EP ‘Soul Survivor' sitting in the 70s roots of music. William's music is impacting today's market and cementing the need for this niche. These timeless classics will never go out of fashion!William is now writing in multiple genres, covering dance, pop, Rap, European dance, love songs, uptempo, and ballads. His mission is to "cover a lot of ground" and be versatile. His music is being pushed into sync licensing. We have a lot to come from this legendary musician!Tune in for a wonderful chat!https://lightintheattic.net/products/cruisin-lita-exclusivehttps://open.spotify.com/artist/3D9QvRzpVnNIg9Nwxgsylc?si=R3-bSCDhTeKy74GqiPpetgSupport the show

How Do We End All Of This Madness? A nossa resposta? Escutando o Boia, a loucura não acaba, mas fica bem mais divertida. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/boia/message
I am so lucky that I get to interview great musicians like Wendell Harrison. Wendell Harrison has a new album called, "Get Up Off Your Knees". We chatted for over an hour and it was so much fun. Wendell worked with Sun Ra, Esther Phillips, Art Pepper, and Grant Green...among others. Wendell is a Detroit Native and found his life and purpose in that city. This is the long form version, I totally recommend that Wendell documents his stories since he has lived a full life. Phil Ranelin grew up in Indianapolis and developed a deep musical friendship with Freddie Hubbard. After a brief stint in New York he moved to Detroit and began playing with Sam Sanders, Marcus Belgrave among others. In 1973 he and Wendell Harrison created "The Tribe Label" which was one of several independent jazz labels along with Strata East and Black Jazz. He cut two albums on this label all the while continuing his mission of raising black consciousness and education. In 1976 he received the key to the city with Donald Byrd. Phil is a great spirit and a beautiful person. He continues to raise awareness most recently heading up the "Eric Dolphy Roots Project" in Panama. Perseverance baby......
We are excited to have the great saxophonist and woodwind player, Wendell Harrison, to kick things off in season 3 of the MDetroit Podcast. From talking about coming up and playing with some of the greatest names in jazz like Barry Harris, Eddie Harris, and Marcus Belgrave to speaking about Wendell's just released record, Get Up off your Knees, this episode was incredible experience and we urge you to check it out! If you enjoyed the podcast, please let us know by giving us a like on our various social media or comment and tell us your thoughts! Finally, as we said mentioned in the intro, let us know who would you like to hear on the MDetroit Podcast and what would you ask them? Thank you all!
In this prologue episode, A Message from the Tribe, we first hear from Marcus Moore and Wendell Harrison, who talk about the Jazz scene in Detroit, and we’ll then hear from Phil Ranelin, who backs up Wendell’s depictions of Detroit’s jazz scene at the time. They also talk about how a program guide for the collective’s concerts became a magazine, and why he thinks Tribe ultimately didn’t break through much outside of Detroit in the ‘70s. And we end with some final thoughts from Wendell and Marcus, as Wendell discusses what it was like to hustle Tribe records live, and the label’s lasting legacy.
On this episode, An Evening With the Tribe, we’ll cover the first two albums in your box, Phil Ranelin and Wendell Harrison’s A Message from the Tribe and Wendell’s own An Evening With the Devil.

For this episode of Renaissance Soul, we go back in time with legendary jazz clarinet player and saxophonist and co-founder of Detroit’s Tribe collective, Wendell Harrison. Back in the end of 2019, the London-based Strut Records released Hometown: Detroit Sessions 1990 - 2014, the first compilation bringing together the modern era recordings of Tribe, Detroit’s acclaimed independent jazz collective. Tribe began as a musical ensemble in 1971 co-founded by saxophonist Wendell Harrison and trombonist Phil Ranelin that soon expanded into a broad amalgam including a live collective and independent record label. Ignored by the mainstream, many African American jazz artists in Detroit and across the US began creating their own small imprints and Tribe emerged alongside other cultural entities to express self determination goals in the city. Recorded at Harrison’s home in Detroit since 1970, he was not short of stories when it came to the Tribe legacy. After talking about the roots of Tribe, we dived into the modern era represented in the compilation learning how the music of Tribe continued stay relevant throughout the changing of generations and technological advances, along with the timeless social and cultural representation of this legendary collective. Renaissance Soul was originally a Detroit hip hop website started in 2001 by your host Kelly "K-Fresh" Frazier that first centered around the discography of legendary producer Jay Dee aka J. Dilla before it branched out to all Detroit hip-hop and music. In many cases, Renaissance Soul was the first place you heard many Detroit music artists that you love today. With it's revival as a podcast, each episode will focus on specific topics (an album, an era, a legacy, etc) from Detroit music of all genres from the past and present from a historical perspective. To start things off, a few of K-Fresh's friends from Detroit give their thoughts about the importance of Renaissance Soul. The Renaissance Soul Podcast starts November 7th with The Big Shoes Episode featuring Detroit hip hop artist Big Tone, followed by The Sponge "Rotting Pinata" 25th Anniversary Episode with Vinnie Dombroski, The Modern Tribe Records Era Episode with Wendell Harrison, and The Sincerely, Detroit Episode with Apollo Brown. When you think of artists like Grover Washington Jr. or Gerald Albright you can close your eyes and become inspired by the amazing sound of smooth jazz. This sound is exactly what inspired Charles Prophet Jr. to pick up the saxophone at the young age of 11. Studying under Detroit jazz masters such as Wendell Harrison and George Benson, he developed a foundation for jazz bebop language. As a student at Wayne State, he majored in jazz studies under the direction of Ernie Rodgers and Russ Miller. His latest project is called, Love & Sax.
