Mental health and anxiety are realities many people are carrying—but what if some of what's overwhelming us isn't just what's happening around us… but what's growing within us? In this message, Pastor Stephen Mizell explores the Parable of the Sower with a focus on the thorny soil—revealing how worry, distraction, and the constant pursuit of more can quietly choke out the peace God is trying to grow in our lives. This message offers both biblical truth and practical steps to help you begin clearing space for God's Word to take root. You don't need to fix everything today. You just need to start by pulling one weed. In This Episode: • Why anxiety isn't just a mental struggle—but a spiritual competitor • How worry and distraction "choke out" what matters most • The hidden cost of always being overwhelmed and overstimulated • Practical ways to set boundaries and reduce stress • What it looks like to cultivate a healthy, receptive heart • Why asking for help is a step toward healing—not away from faith Scripture Referenced: Mark 4:1–20 Judges 2:2–3 Next Steps: If this message spoke to you, consider sharing it with someone who may need encouragement today. In a landmark verdict on Tuesday, Ronald Washington, 59, and Karl Jordan Jr., 40, were found guilty by a Brooklyn federal jury for the murder of the renowned hip-hop icon, Jason Mizell, famously known as Jam Master Jay. The conviction brings closure to a long-unsolved case that has lingered for over 20 years, shedding light on the tragic demise of the Run-DMC DJ. The jury's decision marks the culmination of a four-week trial, during which witnesses recounted the chilling events of Mizell's death inside his Queens music studio on October 30, 2002. Prosecutors portrayed the crime as a heinous act driven by greed and vengeance, stemming from a drug deal gone sour in Baltimore months prior. Throughout the proceedings, Assistant US Attorney Miranda Gonzalez emphasized the premeditated nature of the murder, characterizing it as an ambush and execution motivated by the defendants' desire for retribution. Testimonies revealed the harrowing moments leading up to Mizell's fatal shooting, with witnesses identifying Jordan as the assailant. Uriel "Tony" Rincon, a witness present during the attack, provided crucial testimony, pinpointing Jordan as the shooter. Rincon described the scene, recounting how he witnessed Mizell's tragic fall and Jordan's subsequent actions. Additionally, Lydia High, a close friend of Mizell, tearfully recounted the events of that fateful night, underscoring the profound loss suffered by those who knew and loved the hip-hop luminary. Prosecutors asserted that Mizell's involvement in drug dealings, despite his public stance against drugs, played a pivotal role in his demise. Ralph Mullgrav, a convicted drug dealer, testified about Mizell's participation in cocaine transactions, shedding light on the circumstances surrounding the fatal altercation. Mizell's family maintained his innocence, emphasizing his benevolent nature and philanthropic endeavors. Despite allegations of drug involvement, witnesses attested to Mizell's generosity, highlighting his willingness to support friends and acquaintances in times of need. With the conviction of Washington and Jordan, justice has finally been served for Jam Master Jay, bringing closure to a chapter of uncertainty and grief that has haunted the hip-hop community for over two decades. “It's no mystery why it took years to indict and arrest the defendants,” Breon Peace, the top federal prosecutor in Brooklyn, told reporters after Tuesday's verdict. He said key witnesses “were terrified that they would be retaliated against if they cooperated with law enforcement.” Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? On Friday, September 17, 1971, 10-year-old Pamela Kay Wills returns from Boyd Elementary School to her home in northern Jackson, Mississippi. That afternoon, Pamela and her friend, 11-year-old Patricia Ann Mizell, spend time together at Pamela's house. The two girls tell Pamela's father that they are going to walk the two-block journey to a nearby department store. Hours later, the Jackson Police Department is notified that Pamela and Patricia are missing. The ensuing investigation reveals little new information. It's unclear if that's due to a particularly careful child abductor or a lack of effort on behalf of the Jackson Police Department. On February 14th of 1975, two farmers discover the skeletal remains of Pamela and Patricia. They are located in a leafy ravine west of Vicksburg, Mississippi. In episode 280, Jac and Alexis unveil how two young girls vanished off the face of the Earth with zero explanation, few leads, and no evidence leading to their killer.
